THE ANATOMY OF A Layout
“REAL” TEXTURE >
EASTER
DIGITAL LAYOUT
Amie Wheeler, Spokane, Washington
SUPPLIES: Just Jaimee digital kit, Designed by Soco digital template, Adobe Photoshop.
The “illusion” of a real substrate – in this case wood planks – can be quite alluring as a background texture. It provides a good contrast between the photographs and pieces of paper ephemera.
Note: A digital layout opens the door to other tools and materials. Things that may not be as accessible or practical can now be possible. Think wood, brick, concrete, metal...
Fun Fact:
Decorating Easter eggs is a tradition that dates back to at least the 13th century. In Germany, there's an Easter tradition called the "egg dance," where people place eggs on the floor and dance around them, trying not to break any.
Perfecting your Projects with Pastes
One of the most engaging things about paper crafting is the breadth of tools at our disposal. You can create memory heirlooms using only foundational supplies like pictures, paper, adhesive, and a journaling pen. But you can also incorporate an endless array of tools, mediums, and techniques to add visual interest and layers of meaning to your projects. This gallery showcases crackle paste—a medium that you can use on its own or with stencils to create a weathered, textured finish on paper. It gives an instant aging effect and pairs nicely with heritage or rustic photos. Notice the examples of how crackle paste subtly adds character and depth! Linda Smith’s ‘Fun in the Sun’ layout showcases crackle paste with a twist—it echoes the texture of surf and sand in a beautiful, beachy location.

Here in Canada, after a cold and snowfilled few months, it feels so right to welcome spring with a fun, easy, and interactive card project designed to encourage someone special.
Interactive cards can sometimes feel daunting, but this one is refreshingly simple to assemble. Better yet, it’s the perfect excuse to put some of your favorite Dare 2B Artzy stamps to work. Because let’s face it—that’s where the joy comes from, right? Stamping is all about creating unique backgrounds and standout focal points for your paper projects.
For this card, the tiny solid floral stamp worked its magic to craft a charming background, while the playful bicycle design stole the spotlight as the focal point. The Dare 2B Artzy stamp set I used also comes with a matching steel die, making fussy cutting a breeze— no fuss, just speed and precision!
To add an extra layer of interest and dimension, I incorporated some beautiful washi tape from Serenity Fair. Washi tape is such a versatile crafting tool, and this project showcases yet another fun way to use it.
But why stop at cards? This spring, challenge yourself to expand your ideas into a scrapbook layout. Anything you can create as a card can be translated into a larger format for embellishing a cherished photo. Personally, I can’t wait to adapt this project into a layout featuring some of my favorite cycling photos of my daughters, who are avid cyclists. In my ‘stamping mind’s eye’, I can already picture how stunning it will look.
So gather your supplies, embrace the season, and let your creativity bloom. Happy spring, my friends—enjoy every moment of it!
Viva la Colour! Viva la Colour!
~ Inspired by Vibrant Mexican Hues ~ The colour palette, inspired by Mexico, brought so much joyful creativity! Super-saturated, sassy and playful, these primary colours with an edge laid a foundation of fun and positivity for this feature. Bold patterns and bright hues feature prominently in this gallery, celebrating friendships, special moments, and joie de vivre.
Can you hear the mariachi bands playing in your mind’s eye? Can you see the swirling dancers’ skirts bursting with colour and energy? These projects are all imbued with festival-in-the-sunshine vibes and we know you are going to love every single one!

How to Photograph Your Layouts
You’ve spent hours of creative energy and, let’s face it, a decent amount of money creating beautiful layouts that you hope will be treasured for generations to come! But what if you have more than one family member you wish to share them with? Or what if tragedy strikes and your scrapbooks are lost in a flood or fire? Because each layout is a work of art created with heart, I strongly encourage everyone to also create digital versions of each.
Photographing your treasured layouts will give you more opportunities to share them with family and friends, plus it will ease your mind should the originals ever get lost or damaged.
Spring
Spring heralds a return to colour as Earth sheds her sparkling white shroud and invites greener pursuits. Impatient gardeners armed with seed catalogues and dreams of a bountiful harvest emerge into the warming sunshine to turn and ready the soil. Farms and forests explode with new life, fulfilling that timeless promise of renewal and regeneration. Everyone is excited to cheer this new season, new growth, and new memories in the making! Whether your spring is snowy, muddy, verdant, or rainy, this seasonal gallery of all things spring will delight and inspire you!
Although nothing is quite like seeing, holding, and touching original layouts, good quality photos will provide a version that can be enjoyed online or in a printed photo book to share with many others. It also provides a sense of comfort knowing that there is a backup version of our creations and memories (Figure 1)

Here are my DIY tips to capturing good photos of your layouts!
1. Use natural lighting. Good lighting is critical! Set up by natural, indirect light from an outside window (Figure 2).
2. Use a white backdrop. Place your layout on a larger piece of white paper and add another white paper to reflect light back on the layout (Figure 3). If you have a white wall or wish to prop up the white paper, simply attach the layout using tape (Figure 4).
3. Adjust camera settings. For SLRs, use F/5.6 aperture and shutter speed around 1/125th, then adjust the ISO until the exposure looks good for your light. If you don’t own an SLR, using a cell phone should also work great!
4. Shift your angle. Position your camera to be shooting perfectly parallel with the layout, not angled or skewed (Figure 5a and 5b). Get in close but leave an inch or two of white around the layout.
5. Check the focus. Exposure, white balance, cropping, and other factors can all be adjusted later (especially with RAW files), but “there is no cure for blur!”
Once you have your DIY set up, you can simply rinse and repeat with as many of your layouts as you desire! And don’t forget to send Creative Scrapbooker some of your favourites to be considered for publication!

Stamp the Unity Stamp onto a piece of kraft cardstock using pigment ink. Emboss with black embossing powder. The embossed lines create a barrier, making it easy to stay within the lines while watercolouring.
Place the panel under a piece of clean, thin paper. Use a dry iron over the entire surface to remove the raised embossed edges. This prepares the surface for adding more layers.
Position a stencil over the panel and, using a foam applicator, pounce white pigment ink onto the design.
1. Paint the background using Lindy’s Gang Magical Shakers pigment powders. Allow it to dry completely.
2.
3.
Heat set the panel to secure the ink or air dry.
5.
4. Stamp the Unity Stamp floral image across the entire background using copper-coloured pigment ink. This step creates the stunning holographic effect.

Stamp the IndigoBlu butterfly over the painted background. Use OLFA Crafts scissors to fussy cut the butterfly, creating a colourful embellishment.

DISTRESS
1.
Stamp the large leaf image using Ranger Archival Jet Black ink. Stamp directly onto your card, tag, or layout, and then stamp the same image onto a separate piece of scrap paper.
3.
Using a freshly damp Q-tip, lift colour from the Distress Watercolor Pencil in Fossilized Amber. Layer this yellow shade over the blue leaves to create a vibrant green tone. The combination of yellow, blue, and green adds depth and dimension to the leaves.
2.
Use the Distress Watercolor Pencil in Prize Ribbon to begin blending. If you don’t have a small paintbrush, a damp Q-tip works well. Lightly wet the Q-tip and pick up colour from the tip of the watercolour pencil. Apply a base layer of blue to each leaf.
4.
Carefully cut out the stamped and coloured leaf from the scrap paper, trimming closely around the image. Add Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L 3D Foam Squares to the back of the cut-out leaf to create a dimensional effect. Layer the popped-up leaf over the corresponding stamped image on your project for added texture and interest.

Punch a picket fence border from the dark-brown striped Noteworthy Days paper using the Picket Fence Border Maker Cartridge and Original Border Maker System. Trim the border to 1.75” x 12” using the 12-inch Trimmer.
Punch a watering-can border from the light green lattice Noteworthy Days paper using the Watering Cans Border Maker Cartridge and Original Border Maker System. Trim the border to 1.5” x 12” using the 12-inch Trimmer.
Adhere the individual watering cans to the light green lattice border, alternating colours for a multicoloured effect. Layer and adhere the brown picket fence border and the multicoloured watering-cans border onto a 12” x 2” strip of green gingham Noteworthy Days paper.
Cut a 12” x 1” strip of light blue polka-dot Noteworthy Days paper using the 12-inch Trimmer. Adhere the strip behind the openings of the brown picket fence border with a Repositionable Tape Runner.
Punch watering-can borders from the medium-blue distressed and dark-green distressed Noteworthy Days papers, and Canary Cardstock. Use Micro-Tip Scissors to cut out individual watering cans.
Adhere the assembled border along the bottom edge of the base page. Centre an 11” x 9.5” piece of blue polka-dot Noteworthy Days paper above the border. Arrange the framed photos as shown, add journaling to a circular tag with the Brown Dual-Tip Pen, and adhere it near the top-right embellishment cluster. Finish by adding stickers, floral embellishments, and the ‘Spring’ title in the centre.

Waterfall Junk Journal with Pull Tab
This project combines fun flips, folds, tuckets, and pockets to hold journaling spots, ephemera, quotes, die cuts, and tags. Using a side-pull waterfall mechanism, this versatile design can be added to a junk journal, used as-is, or incorporated as an interactive element.
By Dooreen Rousseau
CREATE THE MECHANISM
1. Cut a strip of 110-lb. cardstock to measure 3" x 11". Score along the long side at 5", 5.5", 6", 6.5", 7", and 7.5". Crease well to align edges evenly.
2. Trim 0.5" off each side of the 5" section to create the pull tab. Cover the pull tab with two strips of patterned paper, each 2" x 12", front and back, trimming to size.
CREATE THE BASE
3. Ink all score lines and the pull tab edges.
4. Attach the pieces to the mechanism before securing it to the base.
1. Use a file folder as the base, cutting it to 6" x 8". Retain the tab portion.
2. Cover both sides with patterned paper and ink the edges.
3. Adhere the mechanism to the base as shown. ONLY apply adhesive to the overhang portion of the strip created in step 4.
4. Once adhered, play with the tab. Gently pull to see how the waterfall will work.
CREATE THE JOURNAL PIECES
Piece #1: Tri-Fold
1. Cut patterned paper to 7" x 12". Score at 5.25" and 9.75".
Piece #2: CD Sleeve
2. Fold the 2.25" section to the back to create a side pocket, notching and inking the edges.
3. Cut a neutral paper slightly larger than the sleeve, trace and cut out the circle, then ink and glue the paper onto the front.
4. Glue a 4.75" x 4.75" square to the inside back.
5. Create a 4" x 6" tag, round the corners, and attach a tab. Insert into the sleeve window.
6. Decorate the back with a collage element framed by two 1" x 4" patterned strips.
Piece #3: Four Flip 1. Cut patterned paper to 5" x 12". Score at 3.5", 7", and 10.5". Ink all edges, making the last section a side.
3. Fold the remaining piece in half, notch both ends, and glue along the sides to create two pockets.
Piece #4: Double Pocket Tag 2. Cut patterned paper to 3.5" x 12". Trim the top to 7.5".
1.
#5:
1. Cut patterned paper to 3.5" x 12". Score and fold at 6". Glue the left and bottom edges, leaving the right side open.
2. Create a 3.25" x 5" tag with a tab for texture.
#6:
1. Fold dictionary paper into a strip 3.25" wide, gluing overlaps.
2. Fold the top down 1", score, and fold corners inward to create a tag top.
3. Insert a 3" x 7" cardstock strip for stability.
4. Fold up the bottom 1.5" to create a pocket. Final size should be 3.25" x 7.5".
5. Add embellishments and ribbon holes at the top.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
1. Position the mechanism on the base with the first score aligned to the left edge and the pull tab extending out the right middle.
2. Start with Piece #6 at the last score, working backward. Glue each piece just below its score line, ensuring proper alignment. Fold open pieces and glue only the left edges.
3. Secure the mechanism by gluing a 1" x 4.5" strip across the right edge of the base, ensuring the pull tab remains free to move.
4. Glue Piece #6 just below its score line, ensuring alignment. Fold open pieces to glue only the left edges if you like.
TEST AND DECORATE
1. Test the pull tab to ensure smooth flipping. Trim the tab to stick out 1" and add a tag top.
2. Decorate with vintage tape, tags, die cuts, and embellishments.
Enjoy your unique, interactive junk journal feature!

While layering and dimension are often a part of layout creation, this one shows us how well it can be done. Starting with a simple background and a combination of pattern and hand-drawn lines and building from there.
Below is a close up detail of the paper flowers that have been carefully crafted and added to the layout. They start with a bed of leaves, then layers of petals have been added and carefully curled. They are finished with wound centres made of paper that add both contrast (in materials) and even more depth. The overall effect is packed with dimension and visual interest.
“The main purpose of Soul ART is to dig deep into important matters of the heart and soul through simple art that anyone can do.”
My Crisis of Faith
I woke up one morning with a fully rhyming poem in my head. I could barely get pen to paper fast enough even though I was still in bed (I always keep paper and pens beside me). When I was done, I couldn’t believe what had just happened and began to cry. Why? Because it was the proof I had been asking God for. I just didn’t expect it to come in the form of a poem given to me while I slept.

SCRAPS OF INFO
I found a beautiful painting by Angel Ashleigh called “The Light of Life” and instantly felt it was the perfect image to match my poem from God. Together it is a powerful message of how Jesus leads us out of the darkness back into the light of His love.
I was in my mid 30s having a crisis of faith. I was raised in a loving Christian family, but suddenly found myself questioning everything— even the existence of God. I was quickly descending into a dark place of doubt and feeling very lost. During this ‘dark night of the soul’, I challenged God. I told Him that He needed to show up, answer my questions and prove His existence if He wanted me to believe in Him.
In His grace and loving patience with me, He answered. This poem, given to me while I slept, was the first in a series of miracles over the course of the next week that brought me firmly back into His arms and resecured my faith.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Angel Ashleigh is an artist inspired to create beautiful paintings that portray assorted aspects of her faith. She was inspired to create this piece based on John 8:12, where Jesus declares, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life." You can see more of Angel’s art at theinkwellgallery.com.
CRASHING WAVES
Venice Cox, Woodhull, New York SUPPLIES: Unknown acrylic paints and canvas.
SCRAPS OF INFO

UNDER HIS FEATHERS
Melissa Merrick, Pflugerville, Texas SUPPLIES: Unknown acrylic paints and canvas.
SCRAPS OF INFO
“Despite never been artistic, God nudged me to pick up a paintbrush in 2019 during a time of deep grief over the loss of my Daddy and challenges of being a single Mom during Covid’s isolation. Through being brutally honest with God about my anger and pain, God led me to paint assorted angel wings which brought peace, joy and hope! I later discovered the verse in Psalm 91, “Under His feathers you’ll find refuge,” which has become the foundation of my new business–painting wings on jackets and hoodies in hopes of spreading the message to all who need it.”

HOLY SPIRIT
Mary Ann Clawson, Hawthrone, Florida
SUPPLIES: Unknown acrylic paints and canvas.
SCRAPS OF INFO
Inspired to create an artistic portrayal of the Holy Spirt, Mary Ann was given the image of fire and a dove while praying. Although she also recognized the Holy Spirit as part of the Trinity, it was only after she showed the finished art to a friend that she discovered a surprising revelation! Captured in a portion of the flames appeared the profile of both God the Father and Jesus the Son. What a beautiful, unexpected miracle to show up in her art!

SCRAPS OF INFO
“This painting is rooted in my testimony: one night in my darkest moment, I wept on my parent’s couch, lost and broken, only to feel the overwhelming presence of Jesus with me, holding me and telling me to rest. This piece is a reminder that His love meets us wherever we are again and again. You can see more of my work at takenyausa.com.”

The Art of
with Alice Boll
Oh, journaling! We all know it belongs on our layouts, but sometimes the words just won’t come. I find myself writing things like, “It was fun!” or “You’re so cute!” and pretending that’s enough. Let’s be real—that isn’t real journaling.
So, what do I do? I tell myself, “I’ll come back to it later.” Sound familiar? The problem is “later” turns into never, and suddenly those stories—the funny, heartfelt, or chaotic moments—are forgotten.
Here’s the good news: journaling doesn’t have to be hard. Like page design or mixed media, it’s a skill you can learn. Better yet,
it’s probably easier! You don’t need to be an English major or a journalist to tell engaging, meaningful stories on your layouts. No one’s grading your grammar here. Journaling is about storytelling, and stories are what make us feel—they bring our pages to life.
I didn’t love English class growing up. Sure, I loved to read, but only stories that interested me. That’s the magic of storytelling—it grabs us and holds on. And when you include stories on your scrapbook pages, those moments become timeless.
But where do you start? How do you turn blank space into a story that matters? Don’t worry—I’ve got three practical tips to help.
BALLOONS
Alice Boll, Whitecourt, Alberta
SUPPLIES: GeoPaper patterned paper, Close To My Heart die cut title and Cuttlebug embossing folder.
TIP #1: SHOW A FRIEND
Staring at a photo but unsure what to write? Show it to a friend. Trust me— it works.
Here’s why: when you share a photo and talk about it, you naturally start telling the real story. You’ll share details that aren’t obvious from the picture:
● What funny thing happened before the photo?
● What made you swear you’d never host 12 kids in your living room again?
For example, I had a birthday photo of my son. I thought, “What do I say? He’s three. Happy birthday!” But when I showed it to a friend, I started telling her about the balloons. Joe had custom balloons with his name on them, and when he saw them, he read the letters of his name but was so excited about the balloons that he thought his name spelled the word balloons. That moment became my journaling.
Try It:
Show a photo to a friend—on a call, video chat, or in person. Write down what you say or record yourself. You’ll be surprised at what comes out.
Alice Boll, Whitecourt, Alberta
SUPPLIES: Prima Marketing watercolor paper, Close to My Heart watercolours, Kaisercraft film strip die cuts, American Crafts Thickers.
TIP #2: START WITH THE ACTION
Think of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana Jones swaps the idol for a sandbag and— BOOM! Arrows fly, walls crumble, and that giant boulder starts rolling. You don’t know who Indy is yet, but you’re hooked because of the action.
You can do the same in your journaling. Start with the action.
Look at your photo. What’s happening?
Describe the moment. Don’t bog things
down with backstory—jump right in and hook the reader.
For example, at a scrapbooking reunion, we gave everyone bubbles to blow. I could have started with details about who was there or why were were together. But instead, I started with: “Bubbles in the air, bubbles in my hair, bubbles everywhere!” The action brings the story to life and makes you curious why a bunch of women were blowing bubbles.
This trick works even if the photo doesn’t show the action. If your picture is calm, the story can describe the chaos that came before or after.
Try It:
Identify the action in your story and start there. Hook us first—you can add the details later.
TIP #3: USE A TEXT CONVERSATION
Wouldn’t it be great if someone else wrote your journaling? Here’s a secret: sometimes, they already have. Text messages are an easy, authentic way to capture stories. Think about it:
● Someone sends you a photo and comments on it.
● You send a photo to someone and tell them what happened.
Those quick, natural conversations? That’s your journaling!
For example, I once sent a photo of a giant Costco bear to my sister-in-law with three lines. “Jonas was shopping for your kids in Costco. I told him no. You’re welcome.”
DEAR LAURA YOU’RE WELCOME
Alice Boll, Whitecourt, Alberta SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Ranger Dylusions ink spray, Liquitex modeling paste, Heidi Swapp title letters, bow and stencil, unknown patterned paper.
Most mothers I know would heave a huge sigh of relief after reading that message, those bears are massive! This short and sweet text was the perfect journaling for my layout.
HOW TO DO IT:
● Screenshot a relevant text conversation and print it out.
● Or, type the conversation as part of your journaling.
Text conversations capture other people’s voices and add authenticity to your pages. Even a short exchange can tell a great story.
Try It:
Scroll through your texts. Find a conversation that ties to a photo and use it—it’s journaling made easy!
YOU CAN DO THIS!
Journaling isn’t about perfect writing—it’s about capturing the stories that make your moments unforgettable. Whether you’re showing a friend, starting with the action, or using a text, these tips make storytelling simple and fun.
Challenge yourself to use each of these tips in your next few layouts. Share your photos, start with action, and mine your texts for those ready-to-use stories. You’ll be amazed at how easily the words flow and how much richer your pages feel. Once you start, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do this sooner! I’ll be back in the next issue with more tips to make journaling simple and meaningful. Until then, happy scrapping!

Transform Your Projects with Creative Layers
Who would think that unassuming pieces of plastic with holes cut into them could offer enduring versatility? They are tough enough to last, and diverse enough that once you have one, you need to have them all! They offer quick additions of colour, pattern, and texture, boosting the interest of any project they land on. The introduction of layered stencils changed the game again, leveling up complexity and possibilities; you can see Emma Mills Mumford’s beautiful example of this with her ‘You Are So Important to Me’ card. Look through the stencil gallery and see how our contributors have used stencils to emphasize themes, complement photo colours or add texture and interest to projects. The possibilities are endless!

Cut the Planner Card base from Petal Pink cardstock, stamp the background, edge with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink, and assemble.
3. Pepper and Salt Planner Card Stamp the salt and pepper shakers from the Let’s Eat set onto watercolour paper using the MISTI Stamping Tool. Assemble as shown.
4. New Grocery Planner Card Take the “New Grocery” card from the Petal Pink cardstock pack. Adhere lined paper to the back and stamp "Today’s Menu" for a recipe list. Edge with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink. Glue the pocket on three sides, leaving the top open. Weave twine through reinforcements, tie, and add recipe cards to the pocket.
5. Recipe Planner Card Stamp the recipe card from the Let’s Cook set onto crème smooth cardstock and cut it out. Stamp the chef’s hat on watercolour paper and cut it out. Die cut the base card from Planner Cards 1 and the pocket from Planner Cards 5, both from the Petal Pink cardstock.
6. Pocket Assembly Edge all pieces with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink. Assemble, gluing the pocket on three sides, leaving the top open for keepsakes. Align as shown.

THE ANATOMY OF A Layout
PATTERN >
SPRING
DIGITAL LAYOUT
Amie Wheeler, Spokane, Washington
SUPPLIES: LJS Designs and Misty Cato digital kits, Adobe Photoshop.
Patterns can come in many forms but what they do have in common is repetition. Patterns are comprised of repeated elements. Sometimes they are predictable and organized, and sometimes they are more organic in their design. Here, we have both. The left is an example of an asymmetric, organic- looking pattern and the right is very rigid.
Patterns can make for great “wallpaper.” By that we mean they function well as a background to create texture. And, they can help to draw your eye to a particular element such as we see here in the sun.
Scraps of Info
Amie Wheeler’s layout shines bright with sunrays crafted from patterned paper! Each strip adds texture, colour, and personality, perfectly framing the photos while celebrating the fresh energy of spring.
In honour of spring, our S.W.A.K. (Sealed With A Kiss) gallery is filled with answers to the call to create greeting cards with a pastel palette. Soft colours communicate tender feelings for birthday wishes or to let someone know you are thinking of them. Expressions of love and gratitude carried by cute critters and flowers burst from every corner. Pastel wishes lift our spirits in diverse and creative ways, and every card in this gallery makes a bold proclamation of care with a gentle and heartfelt tone.
