A Chapter Has Ended
So much emotion comes with finishing an incredible book, especially when you know there isn’t another one waiting in the series. This is one of those moments. We’ve reached the final page of a story that has meant the world to me.
Twenty years ago, around a campfire, a spark of an idea became the opening line of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. Page by page, issue by issue, we built something beautiful, a story filled with creativity, friendship, and heart. And what a story it has been!
As I look back through the well-loved pages of this journey, I feel such pride in every single one: every project, every photograph, every piece of art that told the story of you, our incredible creative community.
I want to take this chapter to thank my family, the main characters who have filled these pages with love and laughter. My children, Madeline, Hannah, Hayden, and Liam, have quite literally grown up within these pages. My son was even on our very first cover! Their little hands, and later their bigger ones, have helped in every imaginable way. From stapling, hauling, gluing, painting, photographing, cleaning, building and most importantly, believing.
To my parents, Donna and Garry, your fingerprints are on every part of this story. From helping with my kids and making Christmas cards to photo shoots, cooking suppers, driving, shipping, and offering endless support, you’ve been my behind-the-scenes heroes for every plot twist along the way.
To my husband, Christoph, you were there for the prologue and now, here for the final page. You celebrated when that very first issue rolled off the press and held my hand when the decision was made to write “The End.” Every chapter between those two moments was richer because of you.
To our team—what a remarkable cast of storytellers you are. None of this could have been written without you. Your creativity, courage, and passion filled every column, layout, and caption. Please turn to our In the End section, it’s a heartfelt tribute to all of you who helped us create this unforgettable story.
And finally, dear reader, this last chapter is dedicated to you. Thank you for opening each issue like a brand-new story, for welcoming us into your homes, attending our events, watching our videos, sharing your beautiful creations, and inspiring us to keep going. You have been the heart of our story for 20 amazing years.
This may be the final page of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine, but the story of creativity never ends. It continues in every scrapbook, every handmade card, every journal, in every moment you choose to preserve and share. As we close the cover on this beautiful book, remember: the best stories are the ones we keep telling. With love and endless gratitude,
Jackie and her family
Jackie and her mom and dad
A 20-Year Celebration— and a Last Hug Goodbye
Dear Friends,
Twenty years ago, a younger, bright-eyed version of me stood next to my co-founder, Jackie, as we watched the first issue of our magazine roll off the press. I’ll never forget the smell of fresh ink, the hum of the printer, and the butterflies in my stomach as we realized: this is really happening!
Back then, we had a wild idea: create a magazine that celebrated creativity, stories, and the joy of memory-keeping. With humour, determination, and a lot of coffee, we set out on that adventure. You, our readers, retailers, manufacturers, and our incredible team, turned it into a vibrant reality that has lasted
two decades. We are truly grateful for the friendships, creativity, and laughter that came from each issue and scrapbooking event. What began with a leap of faith became more than we ever imagined, thanks to a devoted team whose creativity and hard work shaped every page.
With the same butterflies in our stomachs, we are announcing this Winter 2025/26 issue will be our final one. We are gently closing this chapter and marking the end of a truly remarkable journey—one that has taught me you’re never too young, too old, or too busy to start something new. What’s important is knowing when to transition. After 20 years,
Jackie and I have decided it’s that time.
This choice did not come easily and we’ve reflected deeply, holding both our passion for this community and our longing for more time to care for loved ones.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you all— our readers, our partners, and our dedicated team—for being part of this journey and contributing so much to our shared community. As always, your stories matter so please keep creating and celebrating your journeys. One last time, hard hug,
Katharina
❤P.S. Dear subscribers, if your subscription extends beyond this Winter 2025/26 issue, rest assured, we’ll be refunding you the balance. Thank you for your patience as we process this with care, and for allowing us the time to connect with you directly.
The moment our dream became real— our premier issue coming to life in December 2005!

Capturing Gratitude
Have you ever done a gratitude list? Studies show that intentionally focusing on gratitude in our daily lives leads to increased emotional and physical health! Many of us have discovered the benefits of gratitude, but have you ever tried capturing your gratitude in photos or created a “Gratitude Vision Board” (Figure 1)?
Make a list of what you are grateful for, then capture as many as you can in photos. It can include people, experiences, items, concepts, and symbols.
Not only will this exercise provide you another avenue to practice gratitude, but including gratitude images in your scrapbooks, journals, or collages will provide a quick and powerful reminder of what brings you joy and what’s truly important in life.
Gratitude doesn’t have to be about big, life-changing events. In fact, noticing small, everyday things is often what makes a gratitude practice more powerful and sustainable. Here are some examples to inspire you:
People & Relationships: family, friends, pets, community, laughter
Experiences: long baths, drinking coffee, reading a great book, travel
Nature & Surroundings: sunsets, birds singing, music, a favourite tree
We can grow an attitude of gratitude with a little intention and some creative fun capturing photos of things we are grateful for. Ideally, reflect on them daily to remind you what is truly important in life and reap the emotional and physical benefits of gratitude.

Pattern and Repetition
Our brains are naturally wired to recognize patterns. These help us make sense of the world, help us predict outcomes, and make informed decisions. Essentially, patterns are a natural function of the brain so they can feel “right” or “comfortable”. When we use these as a design element it can do the same thing. Here we have the pattern of the paw prints in the background which is a symmetrical pattern. It feels organized so it draws less attention. This is paired with an asymmetrical dot pattern in the heart. Its vibrant colours and random placement captures your attention to the part of the layout that is the most important.

Mixed Media Paper Bag Journal ‘Winter’s Beauty’
I love using paper bags as a base. They’re sturdy, ready-made pockets, easy to trim, and have that wonderful crinkle texture. For this journal, I wanted a wintry feel with blues, greys, browns, and touches of black and white. Digital images work beautifully, but you could also use your own photos and fill the pockets with memories.
The pages are decorated with designer paper, images, and layers of ephemera in neutral tones. By repeating elements such as snowflakes, die cut stems, tissue, doilies, mesh, muslin, and washi tape, the album stays cohesive. The pockets hold large tags that double as journaling spots. Each page is unique yet ties into the whole project. It’s also a wonderful way to use up scraps!
WINTER’S BEAUTY PAPER BAG JOURNAL
Dooreen Rousseau, Edmonton, Alberta
SUPPLIES: Craft O’Clock patterned paper, Eddie’s Hang Ups white paper bags, Nature Sight digital papers, Sizzix Tim Holtz and Elizabeth Craft Designs die cuts, Lavinia Stamps stencil, Simple Stories washi tape, Mintay Fancy Cards, Paper Rose border die, Spectrum Noir Sparkle pen.
Glue two bags together, back-to-back, and repeat until you have four sets. Trim the bags to 5 ½” x 7 ½” and glue the sides closed. The bags will be in landscape orientation, opening to the right. Fold up the bottoms and crease to form the spine of the album.
Cut decorative papers to 5 ½” x 6” to fit the pages. Distress and ink the edges. Add stenciling or texture if desired, then glue in place.
Tear images to size. Add layers behind them— tissue, mesh, fussy-cut flowers, rice paper, doilies, fabric, etc. Tack layers together, then adhere with scor tape. Finish with a quote, ephemera, die cuts, and washi.
Vary each page by layering to the right, left, or below the image. Add a decorative flap page or a stacking belly band.
Cut
A stacked (pyramid) belly band is perfect for tags and ephemera. Mine holds eight ATCs. Cut bands 5 ¼”, 2 ½”, 2”, and 1 ½” tall. Glue only the top and bottom edges, leaving room to tuck items. Decorate the band front.
7.
Create large tags, 6 ½” x 4 ¼”, to fit the pockets. Decorate both sides with digital or designer paper. Add an eyelet and sari ribbon. Use the tags as journaling spots for winter memories.
6.
a small piece of designer paper and adhere to the spine. Punch two holes through each set and thread sari ribbon. Tie in a bow and add a charm.
All Wrapped Up In Washi
Think washi tape is wishy-washy? Think again! This powerhouse tape is a workhorse for paper crafters of all types. Whether you use a little as a subtle accent for that spot that just needs ‘a little something’ or a lot to create an interesting background, washi tape delivers! Many manufacturers have coordinating washi tape embellishments for their paper lines, but stand-alone products are available too, making it easy and inexpensive to add little washi details to your projects. Check out Rhonda Burback’s two-way usage of washi tape for her card set; she created both a gorgeous, textured background and custom-made embellishments. Her cards really highlight the washi tape versatility! Available in themes, neutrals, or bold pops of colour, washi tape is an easy element to add to your next project and this over-stuffed feature gallery will inspire you with lots of ideas!

CHRISTMAS TAG TRIO
Nicole Wright, Calgary, Alberta
SUPPLIES: Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock, Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz stamps, Ranger Tim Holtz Archival ink and Distress Watercolor pencils, unknown ribbon.
SCRAPS OF INFO
Designer Nicole Wright combined Stampers Anonymous stamps with Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Watercolor Pencils to create this festive tag trio. The water-reactive pencils make blending effortless, adding natural shading to pinecones, berries, and holly leaves for a hand-painted look that is quick, easy, and perfect for holiday gifting.
CREATE QUICK HOLIDAY TAGS
1. Colour the berries with Ranger Distress Watercolor Pencils Barn Door, then layer Seedless Preserves to add shadows.
Ink the Stampers Anonymous Holly stamp with Ranger Archival jet black ink and stamp onto the tag. Archival ink keeps the lines crisp when you add watercolour.
3.
For the leaves, colour with Ranger Distress Watercolor Pencil Twisted Citron and deepen shadows with Mermaid Lagoon. Add additional pencil colours as desired for extra depth.
Fill a small bowl with clean water. Using a Ranger Dina Wakley Media brush, activate and blend the pencil on the berries and leaves. Let dry and finish with a fluffy ribbon. 4.

Use the 12-inch Trimmer to cut a 10" x 10" square from the centre of the plaid patterned paper to form a hollow frame. Cut the red bows patterned paper to 11.25" x 11.25", then cut a 9" x 9" square from the centre to form another frame. Layer and adhere the red bows frame on top of the plaid frame. Reserve both centre squares for ornaments and photo mats.
3.
Cut a 6" x 10" rectangle from the green pines patterned paper. Mark the top at 3" and trim from the mark to each bottom corner to form a triangle tree.
5.
Punch additional short borders from the reserved squares. Fussy-cut individual ornaments with Micro-Tip Scissors and adhere them to the blue border strip to create a strand of multi-coloured ornaments.
Cut an 11" square of Bright White Cardstock. Create red and green ink splatters by dabbing Love Letter and Northern Pine Memento Inks onto the 13" x 13" Non-Stick Craft Mat, spritzing with water, and tapping the brush above the cardstock. Let dry, then adhere on top of the layered frames to form the base page.
Punch a border from the blue holly paper with the Ornaments Decorative Border Punch, following the printed guides on the punch base. Save the tiny “burst” punch-outs for embellishments.
Adhere the ornament strand diagonally across the green tree, trimming any overhang. Add more punched borders to decorate, then attach the tree to the base page. Use the red bows paper to mat photos, then add photos, stickers, embellishments, and journaling to finish.

Here is a look inside Cathie’s card. Cathie first demonstrated this background technique on a tag—now she’s showing how the very same method can be used to create the striking backdrop of a card. The best part? This technique is so adaptable, you can use it on scrapbook layouts, art journal pages, gift tags, or just about any paper crafting project you can dream up.
STAMP
Place the Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz stencil on the tag. Blend over the stencil using VersaColor celadon ink. Do not clean the stencil.
Blend the edges with VersaColor celadon ink.
Shift the dirty stencil slightly on the tag. Using a slightly damp baby wipe, gently clean the stencil, moving the excess ink onto the base of the tag.

4. Create a stencil using Creative Scrapbooker Super Stock and Sizzix snowflake dies.
While the ink is still wet, blend the snowflakes into the background. Let dry.
Stamp a sentiment randomly on the background using a Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz stamp and VersaFine onyx black ink.
Stamp the small and big Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz snowflake stamps using VersaColor celadon and turquoise ink over the tag. Repeat until happy with how it looks.
Place the stencil created in Step 5 on the tag. Blend over with VersaColor atlantic. Repeat until happy with how it looks.

THE ANATOMY OF A Layout
MAKING DIGITAL LOOK REAL >
JOYFUL
DIGITAL LAYOUT
Amie Wheeler, Spokane, Washington
SUPPLIES: Digital Kits by Kirstine Cronin-Barrow, Template by The Nifty Pixel, created with Adobe Photoshop CC.
Making digital look not-so-digital can be challenging. Even more so with the onslaught of AI-created images. They key is to make it look not-so-perfect. Although this is a fantastic layout, it doesn’t have that super shiny feel to it that comes with an AI image. The shadows look natural. The layering is a little haphazzard and the cropping is just a little off (for example, the second picture has the crop going through the boy's face). And the lettering “JOYFUL” is placed so the kerning is a bit off. There is a sense of charm to this layout that makes it feel more natural.
Where Do I Even Begin?
In Loving Memory of Connie Campbell
By Heather Johnston
“WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN...”
—words spoken by every scrapbooker at some point! We collect and collect all the products we need to create beautiful family treasures. Yet somehow, we never use it all. That might even be an understatement.
My mom was the best collector of all. She gathered supplies for every idea she had, every idea I had, and every idea her scrappy gals had. She always had the perfect thing to finish a project just right.
She started collecting way back when Creative Memories first arrived in New Brunswick. Around the early 2000s, she and I attended and hosted scrapbook parties with friends while I was pregnant with my first son. Soon after, she became a Creative Memories consultant, and her collection grew by leaps and bounds.
Mom and I scrapbooked together quite a bit back then—through my pregnancies and the births of my boys. She’d travel to Nova Scotia to visit, and we’d attend crops or hang out at the scrapbook store where I was working and teaching classes. Scrapbooking was our shared passion.
When we later moved west, our scrapbooking together became less frequent, only happening during her visits to Calgary. But then, she discovered the Great Canadian Scrapbook Carnival. From that point on, her visits west often coincided with Carnival weekends. She would haul a suitcase full of supplies from New Brunswick, and together we’d pull a wagon loaded with our gear onto the crop floor. What a treat those weekends were! She was always so giddy and joyful.
Over the years we got to know Jackie and Katharina, always welcomed with hugs as we found our seats. Mom became known for her creativity—and also for winning the annual prize for travelling the farthest to attend! This past spring, I attended without her. It was difficult, but our Calgary crop friends took such good care of me, sharing condolences and wonderful stories of Mom—many from their VIP group.
Great Canadian Scrapbook Carnival weekend fun~
At home, Mom had a small crafting space until one visit, when I suggested she turn her formal living room into a scrapbooking studio. We sketched out a plan and she showed my dad. Before long, it became her reality: cupboards and shelves lining the walls, an expansive desk with drawers on each end, overhead lights for rainy days, paper racks to envy and a view you can get lost in—a scrapbooker’s dream! Whenever I visited, she always had a spot cleared for me. Together we’d scrapbook, attend a class, or host crops with her scrappy pals. Dad loved cooking for those weekends, keeping everyone well fed with meals and desserts.
When Mom got sick last July (2024), her scrappy friends showed up with the most amazing sunshine basket—wrapped gifts to brighten her hardest days. They also brought her mini kits for when she felt strong enough to create. On one of my visits, she even managed to make a few cards from her hospital bed. By December, her health had worsened and we lost her in early January 2025. It was sudden and devastating.
And just like every scrapbooker who stares down a pile of supplies and asks, Where do I even begin?, we found ourselves asking the same question as we walked into her scrapbook room. Surrounded by her things, we felt comfort, but also an ache. It wasn’t the same without her.
Eventually, we realized what she would have wanted: her supplies being used, not wasted. Together we went through every cupboard, shelf, bin, and drawer. We sorted into piles–donate, sell, discard–and of course, the biggest pile was “keep.” Those supplies will be used to create more books for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, continuing her legacy. Mom had albums for each of us, for her and Dad, for her childhood, for family celebrations. What a gift it is to flip through those pages, read her journaling, and relive the memories.
Her scrappy gals stepped up once again. They had recently helped another friend’s husband manage her collection after she passed so they knew what to do. They organized donations, priced and photographed items, created a Facebook group to sell supplies, and even hosted pickups, so Dad didn’t have to worry about a thing.
In the end, “Where do I even begin?” looks different for everyone. For us, it meant leaning on friends, and keeping Mom’s memory alive through creating and not rushing the process. With time and helping hands, we began healing while finding the right way to honour Mom’s vast collection.
~Friends helping to organize and manage mom’s collection
For her celebration of life, we honoured her wishes for a true party—nothing somber. We displayed her scrapbooks and framed photos from every stage of her life, right up to the summer before her illness. When everything came back home, Dad placed her urn in her scrapbook room— the place she loved most, where she could “stay.”
Finally, I want to thank her scrappy gals— who cheered her up in the hospital, kept her dreaming about the next crop, and filled her days with laughter. Mom loved a silly moment most of all, and I can still hear her laughing with us.
We sure do miss you, Mom. Love, H
A Note from Katharina & Jackie
We will always remember Connie with so much love. Her laughter, warmth, and creativity lit up every Carnival she attended, and it was such a joy to welcome her year after year with a big hug and see her suitcase full of scrappy treasures.
But even more than at Carnivals, we treasured Connie’s presence in the Village of Inspired People. Her kindness, encouragement, and genuine spirit made the Village a brighter place for everyone. We are especially grateful to Heather for sharing this story with us. It is an honour to celebrate Connie’s life and her creative legacy in these pages. She will always be part of our Creative Scrapbooker family.
With love, Katharina & Jackie

Who Am I?
Notice anything different?? This article and my entire business has a new name! After years of using “SoulART” , I had to give it up (someone else trademarked it). I’ll be honest, it hasn’t been an easy journey! Many tears were shed and I struggled to find a new name that would adequately convey my mission to bring rest for the soul through art. But who am I if not SoulART?
ARTwithAllison.com Finding rest for your soul through art.
This whole journey honestly triggered a bit of an identity crisis as I found myself asking “Who am I really?” There are some obvious answers to this question (a wife, mom, artist, photographer, educator, coach, etc.), but as always, I wanted to dig deeper.
After several days of processing and prayer, I heard God say, “I have the answer to your question. It’s not actually about WHO you are, but rather WHOSE you are… I have called you by name and you are MINE.”
Cue instant peace (and tears). God knows me. I am His precious daughter and if God calls me by name, adding Allison to my business name seemed fitting. My purpose is still the same… ART with Allison is all about creating soulful art that focuses on matters of the heart and helps you find rest for your soul.

SCRAPS OF INFO
I decided that my first “ART with Allison” mixed media project would be about my journey of releasing SoulART and finding my identity in who God says I am. I chose the simple line drawing of a face to symbolize the peace that comes from knowing God calls me by name and I am His.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1. This is the verse God brought to mind as I journeyed through selecting a new business name so I wanted to create another version of my first ART with Allison mixed media project in my Bible right beside this special verse.

for Every Theme
Paper crafters love to explore different techniques and use different elements to help them tell the story. Adding something puffy helps to highlight a theme and visually punctuate an important point. In this gallery, you can see many different ways to use this element to support a variety of subjects. Puff paint adds fluffy texture to a grumpy cat’s hat, softening his sour demeanor. It also adds snowy elements to icy winter pages, emphasizing frosty fun. Carefully placed puffy elements create texture and interest; Rhonda Ivens does this while also underlining the gritty nature of motor sports. Shannon Peterson uses puffy textures to add a distressed and aged look to her layout about the Royal Tyrrell Museum. The applications are endless and unlimited! We hope you are inspired to grab something puffy and get creative!

Winter—the season of short, blue-sky days and long, glittering nights. What on the surface can look foreboding and dreary does not stop winter people at all! We bundle up and make the most of what sunshine is available for a myriad of cold weather activities, collecting friends and memories as we go about our pursuits. Days on the hockey rink or ski hill are followed by hot cocoa nights by the fire, cozied up to a good book. Make the most of those short winter days and fill your scrapbooks with your memories. Scrapbookers are there to document it all, and this gallery will inspire you with its lovely frosty fair!

Sealed with a Kiss
One of our favourite Christmas traditions is making and exchanging homemade holiday cards. One of the best aspects of these cards is how varied and unique they are! They can feature Santa, elves, and reindeer; holiday scenes and decorations; winter animals that send cheer; or Christian celebrations of a baby’s birth. Our Christmas gallery is filled with all of these things and more! Check out the cards Yuko Neal and Emma Mills Mumford created featuring bright, non-traditional colour schemes or the funny cats found in the cards submitted by Naomi Harner and Shilo Miles. There is something for everyone in this jam-packed gallery.

In the End
To Our Team — With Love
For twenty years, these pages have been filled with creativity, laughter, and heart, and behind every single one of them has been an extraordinary team. Designers, writers, editors, photographers, social media creators, bloggers, proofreaders, and videographers, each of you helped shape Creative Scrapbooker Magazine into a celebration of creativity and connection.
From the early days of brainstorming and meeting tight deadlines to the polished pages you hold in your hands today, you poured your time, talent, and passion into every issue. Each name and face in this collage tells part of our story.
We built more than a magazine together. We built a family. One that encouraged, supported, and inspired each other through every project, photoshoot, and spark of an idea.
In the end, that’s what our story has always been about: creating something beautiful together.
With hearts full of love and gratitude, we thank each and every one of you for twenty incredible years of creativity, dedication, and friendship.
