The Tiara July 2025

Foreword

Eliske van Vuuren

And so, I present to you the last of my babies – the Winter edition.

As I near the end of my term, I am incredibly proud to have reintroduced the Tiara culture of Kasteel. It all started in December of 2024, and 7 months later, here we are for the last one.

At the beginning of this journey, I never could have thought the impact that the Tiara have. I set out to create something enjoyable for everyone, regardless of personality, culture, background, etc.

Little did I know how much you would love it.

Thank you to every person who embraced the Tiara. This is yours as much as it is ours. But thank you especially to the Tiara made this more than just a magazine, but made it a platform for creative expression, unlike anything I have ever seen before.

I know you will carry on my legacy and create a legacy of your own. I established the foundation, now it is up to you how you build on it further.

I’m incredibly proud of you and cannot wait to see what you have in store.

Much love, Eliske.

The first semester of the 2025 term has been nothing short of fun, hard work, laughs and tears.

The first years moved in early in February with the seniors following short on their heels.

We kicked off with popkoppe and heaps and heaps of blommetjies to create a stunning piece of art for PracJool (thanks Nina).

The first years started their First Year Concert training, and they enjoyed it so much they extended their training (I’m sarcastic).

Mosa and her TAD crew had their hands full with ‘Safety Awareness Week’, ‘Value your Environment Week’ and ‘Wellness Week’.

With that, Mosa also held a few academic events and motivated everyone to work hard.

Sport has also been busy with hockey, netball, table tennis, and badminton already finished.

Teresa took us on trips to Rising of the Future, our CSE project, and collected over a ton’s worth of clothing for Barefoot Day.

Megan made sure that we keep the ‘work hard, play hard’ balance by organising fun social events for us to attend. Two notable ones were the Informal and Bachelorette.

Elvonezé created a picture-perfect stall for Open Day and Eliske kept AC intact. Eliske also gave us our very own newspaper again with stories from our past and present.

Tarah made sure the residence stays afloat in terms of maintenance.

And Coreen, well she once again proved why she is the worthy Primaria of Kasteel. She is everywhere, always has a smile on her face and her love for Kasteel is so evident.

All and all, we had a great first semester and we look forward to the next one!

Looking Forward...

As always, our beloved NWU has a jam-packed schedule ready for the semester ahead. With recess ending and students returning, functions, traditions and just all-around fun will be taking place within the purple walls of Kasteel.

To kick off the new semester, Kasteel has our annual “Zoepweek” from the 14th until the 17th of July. The week usually takes place earlier in the year, so potential moms and daughters are eager to take part in this fun tradition.

The 15th of July marks a special day for every lady’s residence, ladies we are getting married! Excelsior’s clubhouse

Winter Season is Upon Us

Even if you’re not a sporty person, your support makes all the difference.

The first semester at Kasteel was bursting with action, energy, and unforgettable sports moments! From first-year sports all the way to hockey, netball, squash, table tennis, and even chess, Kasteel came out strong and shone like the star she is.

Whether it was diving for a goal (ouch!) or outsmarting an opponent on the chessboard, our ladies gave it their all!

But hold onto your crowns, because semester two is bringing the heat!

We’ve got a full line-up ahead:

• Basketball

• Soccer (can we win again?),

• Padel (a first for residence sports!)

• Athletics

• Tennis

• FIFA (gunning for our fourth win in a row!)

• Badminton

• Beatsaber

There’s nothing like the feeling of standing on the sideline with your Kasteel sisters, cheering, laughing, and feeling the pride swell.

Throw on your warmest jacket, grab a friend, and come be part of the magic.

Our athletes train hard and show up for every match, so let’s show up for them too.

Whether you play or just cheer, Kasteel sport is where we grow, bond, and build unforgettable memories.

See you at the next game!

will be the venue where we officially tie the knot with our beloved slepies.

On Thursday the 17th of July we also have our Canned Food Day. Our HC and Kasteel ladies have been working tirelessly to gather enough food to donate, and we can’t wait to witness the result.

Next up we have the annual Patria July festival where we cheer on Larissa Klopper in her Miss Patria July journey. With fun artists like Robbie Wessels and Zaan Sonnekus the night is bound to be as fun as it comes. We also have our soccer starting soon. Winter sport can be a bit tough, so support is always welcome for those participating.

Our Queen is away from Wednesday the 16th of July for the amazing Big

Prims event to raise awareness and funds for less fortunate students.

Support is key in her three-day fast.

While our Primaria is away, Kasteel is hosting a “Big Prims Bash” costume party. Bring your friend and dress as a dynamic duo for a night of fun. Lastly, get ready for a night of glamour, music and unity as Kasteel’s formal is getting closer! 15 August is the night of nights where we all dress up, dance and reminisce about the amazing year we have had so far.

The next few weeks are jam-packed for sure, so remember to take the needed rest and focus on your academics as well, but most importantly, enjoy every single moment of what is to come.

Preparing for the Formal

Johanet Janse van Rensburg friend if they are open to a wardrobeswap. Whatever you choose, make sure it: fits well, allows you to dance, and won’t have you adjusting it all night.

Whether you're just beginning your journey or closing this chapter, The Formal is a moment to celebrate how far you've come. It is more than just a night out, “it’s the event of the year”. This will be one of those nights that will live on in photos and group chats long after the lights go on. But great nights don’t always happen by accident; they require preparation. Here’s a guide to getting ready for Kasteel’s Formal.

1. Lock in the look: Dress rentals are a smart and stylish solution (just Google “dresses for hire Potchefstroom”). Your outfit doesn’t have to break the bank so if you are on a student budget, don’t worry. Ask a

2. Shoes: You might think “beauty is pain” until you’re barefoot at 9h00 with a blister the size of your ego. Break in your shoes ahead of time, or at least pack flats or plasters. Take it from someone who knows.

3. Do not procrastinate like this is a group project: The Formal involves more than just showing up. Think about:

• Tickets: Bought and in a save place.

• Transport: Who’s driving? Are you booking an Uber? What’s your plan for getting home or to an after party?

• Timeline: Know when you need to be ready and build in time for unexpected delays.

4. Practice makes picture-perfect: That TikTok hair tutorial you bookmarked? Try it before the day of The Formal.

The same goes for makeup. What looks good in theory might need some trial and error in reality. If you’re getting professional help, book early. And if you’re doing it yourself, give yourself enough time and good lighting.

5. Confirm Your Crew: Whether you’re going solo, with a date, or in a group, check in with your people ahead of time.

Something you should also take into consideration is whether your group of friends will be able to fill a table or if collaboration will be needed.

6. Capture the Moment: Yes, there will be a photographer at The Formal but they’re mostly capturing the overall vibe, not your personal photoshoot.

If you want proper pics of your outfit, friend group, or those iconic “golden hour” shots, plan a mini photoshoot before the event.

Ask a friend with a good camera (aka portrait mode) or book someone who takes photos.

You will want a full-body pic where you’re not mid-blink or caught shoving dessert into your mouth.

Either way, don’t let the night pass undocumented.

Most Likely To... (Tiara edition)

For the past six months, The Tiara has been running like a well-oiled machine. Behind the stories, deadlines, late-night editing sessions, and many, many cups of coffee, is a powerhouse of 24 dynamic ladies — each one bringing something completely unique to our editorial dream team.

We’ve spent this time digging into campus life, writing about Kasteel’s quirks, celebrations, and chaos, and getting to know our fellow Kasteel ladies inside and out. But it hit us recently: We know everything about you but you don’t know much about us.

So, it’s time to change that. From the grammar queens and layout perfectionists to the undercover comedians and snack stashers — here’s your chance to get to know the real Tiara team. We’re pulling back the curtain and answering the most important questions of all…

Surviving a Potch Winter: A Guide

Jo-Mari Janse van Rensburg

There are two types of people you’ll find in Potchefstroom during winter:

1. The ones who stay curled up in bed, sipping hot chocolate — complaining about how cold Potch is.

2. And those who got out to Musics for a brandy special — also complaining about how cold Potch is. No one escapes it.

Every morning students grumble as they make their coffee and put on the multiple layers needed to fight off the cold. Walking to class becomes mission impossible and sitting in cold lecture halls can only be described as torture. Right now, we’re lucky enough to be home for recess — some lounging on sunny beaches, others curled up beside fireplaces in the Kalahari. But let’s not kid ourselves. Soon, we’ll all be heading back to Potch, and we’ll need to be prepared.

Don’t worry — The Tiara’s got you. Here’s your ultimate Winter Survival Checklist:

1. An electric blanket – Because slipping into a warm bed at night is the closest thing to happiness we have.

2. Boxes of Nescafé Cappuccino –For warmth, comfort, and the illusion that you have your life together.

3. Socks so thick they could stop a bullet – Bonus points if they look like they came from your granny’s closet.

4. Lip balm – Because the Potch wind will try to steal your lips on the way to class.

5. Soup (lots of it) – Anything from creamy chicken to "whatever's-left-inthe-fridge" stew. Just heat and survive.

6. Hot water bottles (plural) – One for you, one for your roommate, and one for emotional support.

7. Long winter boots – Because nothing says “I may be freezing, but I’m fabulous” like a good pair of boots.

8. A spot on your bed for Mietsie –Because no one cuddles better than our favourite residence mascot.

What a Joke!

■ When does winter begin? When autumn leaves.

■ What's easy to catch and hard to get rid of? A cold.

■ What do trees say after winter is over? What a re-leaf!

■ What did the sushi say to the bee? Wasabi!

No one escapes the cold...

■ What's brown and sticky? A stick.

■ What do you call a fish with no eyes? Fsh.

9. A sense of humour – Because if we can’t laugh about how cold it is, we’ll just cry. University can be overwhelming at times, but there's always time to laugh with friends. Here are some of Kasteel's funniest jokes.

■ Verduidelik gou vir my: Hoekom sê mens "Ag moeder" as iets cute is, maar "Ag vader..." as iets fout is?

■ Dis so koud op kampus, die boere dra twee kortbroeke!

■ Wat noem jy ń lemoen wat dink hy’s snaaks? ń Nartjie.

Student-Friendly Winter Recipes & Go-to Warm Drinks

As the weather drops nothing helps with warming up like a good hearty meal and your go to warm drink. Something quick and easy and that is not only warming but filling and cost efficient, pap and chicken curry.

What makes pap and chicken curry a go-to winter student recipe is that it is one of South Africa’s staple meals, its affordable as well as easy to prepare. This recipe only requires a few items such as maize meal, chicken, onions, herbs and spices of your choice, and curry powder.

Instructions:

1) Preparation of pap on the stove: Boil water on the stove and add a pinch of salt as the water boils. Once the water has began to boil add the maize meal to the water and stir together. Add more maize meal or water to the pot according to desired consistency of the pap. Leave on stove for 15 to 25 minutes until cooked.

2) Preparation of pap in microwave: Begin by boiling water in the kettle. Using a microwave safe bowl, add your preferred amount of maize meal and a pinch of salt. Add the boiling water and stir the mixture and put in the microwave for 30 seconds, repeat this process three times. After the fourth 30 seconds in the microwave, remove and stir for the last time and put in the microwave for 1 minute, then your pap is ready.

3) Preparation for chicken curry on stove: First fry onions until golden brown and then add your chicken to the fried onion. Add your preferred herbs and spices, stir and let it cook for 15 minutes. In a separate cup mix your curry powder with water and stir into a paste and then add to your chicken pot, add more water to cover the chicken and simmer until cooked.

4) Chicken curry in microwave: In a kettle boil water, pour onto your uncooked chicken and cover for 15 to 20 minutes. In a microwave safe bowl season your chicken and put in the microwave for 2 minutes. In a separate cup mix your curry powder with water making a paste and pour onto your chicken then place back into the microwave for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove and enjoy.

After enjoying this homely meal, cuddle with your warm cup of tea, coffee, or warm water.

Conspiracy Theories to Get You Thinking

Nastia Jacobs Lorde is actually in her thirties.

From secret cults in Hollywood to celebrities who "never age", pop culture has always attracted some bizarre theories from fans who believe there are more to the story than the camera wants us to see. These theories have a way to make you never look at your favourite stars the same again … Here are a few entertaining, and sometimes even creepy conspiracy theories to get you thinking.

Avril Lavigne is replaced with a body double.

Avril Lavigne made her way into the music industry in 2002, quickly becoming a pop-punk icon.

But according to a bizarre conspiracy theory that originated on a Brazilian fan page, Avril struggled with fame so much in the beginning of her career that she was occasionally replaced by a body double named Melissa Vandella. The theory goes even further— claiming that Avril actually died shortly after the release of her 2003 album Let Go, and that her team began using Melissa full-time to keep the brand alive.

So, what’s the "proof"? Supporters of the theory point to Avril’s style shift— from baggy pants and ties to skirts and dresses—as well as subtle changes in her facial features and voice.

One of the most famous pieces of 'evidence' is a photo from a shoot where she appears to have the name “Melissa” written on her hand.

Pop Culture

Superfine: A Deep Dive into Black Tailoring at the Met

The Met Gala, held annually on the first Monday of May, is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It serves as the opening night for the Institute’s annual fashion exhibition.

Beyond its fundraising purpose, the Met Gala has become a globally recognised fashion event, renowned for its celebrity guest list, elaborate costumes, and extensive media coverage. To align with this year’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, the dress code for the 2025 Met Gala red carpet was titled Tailored For You

This sartorial mood was designed to provide guidance while encouraging creative interpretation. Given the exhibition’s strong focus on menswear and suiting, many Met Gala looks embraced tailoring in various ways, from classic and sleek to theatrical and avant-garde, reflecting the Met’s history of embracing the latter.

As for who graced the iconic Met steps this evening, we saw the year’s official co-chairs, including A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, and Lewis Hamilton.

When Lorde dropped her breakout hit “Royals” at just 17, fans were stunned by the maturity and depth of her songwriting. So stunned, in fact, that some refused to believe she was actually a teenager.

A conspiracy theory quickly spread, claiming Lorde was secretly much older than she claimed—possibly even in her 30s.

Fuelling the fire were a few awkward interview moments, like a 2014 chat with Rookie Mag in which she said a book had resonated with her “as a teenager… I mean, I am still a teenager,” causing skeptics to raise their eyebrows.

But the theory was seemingly put to rest when a reporter for The Hairpin obtained and published Lorde’s official birth certificate, confirming she was indeed born in 1996.

Stevie Wonder isn't really blind

Although Stevie Wonder has been blind since shortly after birth due to complications from being born prematurely, some conspiracy theorists claim he's been faking it for decades. One of the most popular pieces of “evidence” is the infamous microphone stand incident, where a mic stand falls in front of Stevie during a live performance—and he appears to catch it mid-air.

Adding fuel to the theory are photos of him holding or seemingly aiming a camera at NBA games, as well as interview moments where he appears to make direct eye contact with people.

Coincidence, or something more mysterious? Most likely, it’s just a mix of timing, heightened senses, and fans reading too much into perfectly explainable moments—but in the world of pop culture conspiracy theories, no detail is too small to question.

Britney Spears is mentally impaired

Britney Spears has publicly revealed that she was forced to take lithium—a powerful mood-stabilizing drug— which, according to many of her fans, may have caused lasting damage to her mental health.

Her social media presence only caused more concern, with videos showing her appearing disoriented, anxious, or robotic.

Her Instagram posts often came across as cryptic or unsettling, leading followers to closely analyse her captions, outfits, and even eye movements for hidden messages or cries for help.

Fans widely believe that Britney had not been acting like herself for years, and some are convinced she was using social media to signal distress or suggest she was being controlled or held against her will.

Unsurprisingly, they all made the 2025 Met Gala best dressed list, joining many other dressed-to-impress attendees. What was your favourite look?

Last year, the Academy Awardnominated star, Colman Domingo, attended his first-ever Met Gala. Clearly, he made a lasting impression, as he was asked to return for this year’s event and even serve as one of the celebrity co-chairs. The Rustin star wore a custom Valentino robe with a sequined bolero, antique silver canes, feathers, and necklaces. Underneath, wide-leg trousers and a butter silk shirt.

Lewis Hamilton, a modern dandy himself, collaborated with Grace Wales Bonner for a profound exploration of identity through fashion. Wales Bonner created an ivory suit for Hamilton, featuring a cropped jacket, high-waisted trousers with a tuxedo stripe, coattails, a white bow tie, and an embroidered ivory sash draped around his waistband. A beret by Stephen Jones Millinery completed the ensemble.

A$AP Rocky, known for his impeccable personal style, executed a contemporary take on tailoring.

He opted for a cool, sportswearinspired look, featuring a doublebreasted AWGE parka made from technical wool. The jacket boasts coated snaps and Velcro detailing on the sleeves, paying homage to the Marmot outerwear Rocky saw being worn in his native Harlem growing up.

Actress and singer Teyana Taylor arrived at the event in a custom Marc Jacobs outfit, accompanied by costume designer Ruth E. Carter. Taylor’s burgundy cape featured embroidery of “Harlem Rose,” a reference to her 2018 song.

Janelle Monáe was on theme (and on time), wearing a Thom Brown suit, a designer she’s attended the Met Gala as a guest with for several years. The look was styled by the Academy Awardwinning costume designer for Wicked, Paul Tazewell.

Rihanna shows off her third pregnancy wearing a custom Marc Jacobs ensemble that aligned with the gala's theme, featuring a pinstriped suit-inspired dress, a cropped jacket, and a large, wide-brimmed hat. This was certainly a night for the history books.

Hailey Bieber was her own husband’s stalker

One of the wilder conspiracy theories in pop culture suggests that Hailey Bieber (formerly Baldwin) was a longtime stalker of Justin Bieber before they got married.

According to fans who have dug up old photos and internet posts, Hailey was obsessed with Justin from the early days of his fame—allegedly attending fan events, posing outside his hotel, and even having a "Belieber" Twitter account.

Though there's no real evidence to support the stalker claims, the internet has held onto screenshots, resurfaced tweets, and side-by-side photo comparisons to try and “prove” Hailey had always planned to become Mrs. Bieber.

Whether coincidence, fangirl dedication, or pure internet myth, it remains one of the most persistent theories in the Belieber world. Is Stevie Wonder really blind?

Colman Domingo.
Britney Spears' social media posts spark concern among fans about the state of her mental health.

Maintaining a Glow in Dry Winter

As the chilly breeze settles in and winter wraps us in cozy scarves and warm blankets, our skin and hair often need a little extra love. But don’t worry—staying radiant and hydrated through the season is easier than you think! With just a few gentle tweaks to your routine, you can keep your glow going strong all winter long.

Winter Wardrobe Wonders: Fashion Trends & Styling Tips for Kasteel Ladies

As the Potchefstroom air turns crisp and the mornings get chillier, it's officially time to swap out sundresses for sweaters and sandals for boots. But just because the temperature drops doesn’t mean your style has to! This winter, fashion is all about comfort, confidence, and creativity — and we've got all the tips you need to stay warm and stylish right here in res.

• Oversized Everything

Oversized coats, chunky knits, baggy jeans — it’s all in. Not only does it keep you warm, but the relaxed fit gives off that effortlessly cool “I woke up like this” vibe. Bonus: It’s perfect for layering.

• Earth Tones & Neutral Layers

Think creamy beige, rich browns, olive greens, and soft greys. These colours are versatile and timeless, and they mix and match beautifully. Pair a neutral base with one bold pop of colour like a deep burgundy beanie or emerald scarf.

• Textured Fabrics

Sherpa, faux fur, corduroy, and wool blends are having a moment. They’re warm, cozy, and add dimension to your outfit. A textured jacket can instantly elevate even the most basic outfit.

• Statement Scarves & Beanies

Accessories are doing the heavy lifting this season. A bold scarf or a knitted beanie in a fun colour or pattern can transform a simple outfit into something Instagram-worthy.

• Boots Are Back (Always)

From chunky ankle boots to classic knee-highs, there’s a boot for every mood. Pair with skinny jeans, skirts with tights, or even wide-leg trousers.

With the right ingredients anything can be a success, here’s how to style your winter wardrobe on campus.

1. Layer Like a Pro

Start with a thermal or fitted long sleeve as your base. Add a chunky knit or hoodie and top it off with a long coat or puffer. This way, you can adjust your outfit for Potch’s unpredictable temperatures.

2. Mix Comfort with Cute

Pair your favourite sweatpants with a fitted turtleneck and a long coat. Or wear leggings with an oversized hoodie and cute boots. When fashion meets comfort it’s winter perfection.

3. Dress It Up (Even Just a Little)

If you’re heading to a dinner, event, or coffee date, opt for a turtleneck dress with tights and boots. Add a waist belt to give shape and a long coat to complete the look.

4. Keep It Practical

You’re a student, not on a runway — so keep your outfits walkable, washable, and warm. Carry a neutral-coloured tote bag for your books and a reusable hot chocolate mug for those chilly lecture mornings.

Final tips for the fashionable Kasteel ladies: don’t be afraid to repeat outfitsif something works, it works!

Comfort is key, a cold 7:30 lecture is no one’s friend, so if you are comfortable, it’s worth the walk.

Lastly remember that comfort is your best accessory, own what you wear!
