Francis Noel Soledad, A Teenage Inspiration Of Our Today’s Society

You ain’t a Filipino if you’re not familiar with Jose Rizal’s famous quote “Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan!” And in this story, we are honored to feature an incredibly inspiring story of Mr. Francis Noel Soledad, isang Kabataan, at tunay pag-asa ng bayan.

This story is not a typical story. This is not a story of how trial and error became a story of success. This story is about a teenage student, who at an early age, does not only fight for the daily financial problems, but a story of a teenage boy who continuously gives hope, love, and inspiration while dealing with the ordeal of life. This story is about Mr. Francis Noel Soledad, his life and his venture.

Meet Mr. Francis Noel Soledad, 4th year

college student of Technological University of the Philippines, and currently studying Print Media.

Just like many of us, Noel also dreamt of being successful and experiencing the beauty of life. But, not all of us may have life’s favor. At an early age, Francis experienced life difficulties, not only in terms of financial but with his current health condition, Atelectasis Lungs or Lung Cancer.

According to him, his main source of income is by selling one of people’s favorite snacks or dessert “graham balls”. But his graham balls are not just a typical dessert for you to try, why? Because it comes with different flavors that everyone would surely love based on their appetite! And for only ₱80, you get to taste his

flavorful graham balls if you want something to eat as dessert or snacks.

Francis mentioned that one of his primary reasons why he’s selling graham balls beside Unibersidad De Manila (UDM) is because he wants to earn money for his education and for his medicine. He also mentioned that he’s been dealing with lung cancer which makes him more persistent to earn a living to sustain his needs, to finish his education and to help his younger siblings.

“[W]ala na akong ibang way or chance kundi magtinda ng graham balls, sa kahit saan. Aminado ako na mukha akong kawawa kapag namamalimos ako sa paghingi sa mga taong ‘di ko kilala,” he said.

Mr. Francis may not be born with a golden spoon, nor a silver platter, but he was born to rise and give excellence not only in terms of being “madiskarte” but also in being one the excellent students of his program.

And despite his life circumstances, Mr. Francis did all his best to maintain his grades while juggling up in selling graham balls. In his Facebook post, he proudly posted online his grades with all lines of 1 and 2. By that, we can definitely say that Francis is a living proof that there’s still hope with our Kabataan.

With his persistence, faith, and by keeping himself motivated despite his life challenges, Mr. Francis stood by and made his own way to keep himself a living proof that there’s still hope with our youths of today. With his creativity and imaginative skills, other than selling graham balls alone, he continued to prosper himself by establishing his own clothing line named “KBTN.”

He mentioned that he started KBTN clothing during the pandemic last year, where he discovered and studied anything about t-shirt printing and eventually tried to make it trendy because he, himself, wants to build his own business with a great purpose. Other than that, he also shared that he made himself his own inspiration in creating his own clothing line KBTN as well as the youths of todays who are facing life difficulties too.

“Ang inspirasyon ko sa business ko na to is yung sarili ko, kasi alam ko sa sarili na hindi ako makakapag-trabaho ng stable because of my condition. At syempre, isa narin na inspirasyon ko dito ay yung mga napapariwarang kabataan,” he added.

Other than his inspiration, he mentioned that his greatest motivation in creating his business is his mother. He shared that his mom gives a great impact to his life by teaching him how to be resilient, motivated, and to push through with his dreams.

But, no matter how great his initiatives are in creating his own clothing brand, some critiques and financial problems have come along his way especially when he experienced being scammed by a t-shirt printing supplier, even before the KBTN was about to prosper.

He shared that a major part of his savings were scammed, including the money that he only borrowed from several friends and that made his clothing line KBTN halted. Yet, despite those misfortunes, Mr. Francis didn’t let that bad day ruin his dreams.

He continued with his usual routine, studying print media, while juggling up his way of living, selling flavored graham ball in his school TUP, beside UDM, and even along MRT Station to earn again. Despite experiencing extraordinary life challenges, Francis continued to have a positive mind, a heart full of hope, and a soul

that’s always wanted to share great inspiration to others.

After quite some time, a group of students noticed him and made him the subject of their social experiment. And later on, he was discovered by News5 for having such an extraordinary life story.

Due to that unexpected exposure, Francis became more grateful and resilient in life. He became popular and a lot of students and even random strangers are now buying his products. Perhaps, this is the opportunity and season of his life that he’d been waiting for. As they say “the pain that you’ve been feeling right now, can’t compare to the joy that’s coming” - Romans 8:18

Now, Francis continues to pursue his dreams and to make his clothing line KBTN continue to prosper, with its initiative to serve as a constant reminder that our youth should have two great things to remember: effort and dreams.

“Purpose ng business kong to is pa-remind sa mga KABATAAN na wag silang mapagod mangarap at magsumikap. Kasi may mga kabataan na may malawak na pangarap pero walang pagsisikap, may mga KABATAAN naman na may pagsusumikap pero walang malawak na Pangarap. Kaya sana wag mawala sa kanila ang dalawang bagay na yun,” he said.

Henry Sy was born in Jinjang, Xiamen, China and grew up in a poor household. As their financial stability in China did not stabilize, they decided to move here to the Philippines in 1936 and later on opened a mini convenience store in Manila. But soon after the WWII striked, their family business was striked down as well.

Despite that incident, Henry Sy continued his interest in building his own empire by selling worn military combat shoes to American soldiers, which pretty much started the Shoe Mart business, or what we now call SM.

For Sy, living here in the Philippines was a daily struggle. He experienced having a hard time socializing and experienced discrimination at an early age due to his immigrant status. Doesn’t have a permanent home he can call his own, and he even encountered being pushed out of a medical convenience store’s parking lot and called out by different names due to his nationality. And that’s something that Sy wanted to change, and something that he doesn’t want anyone to experience.

In 1958, SM by that time was the 1st Shoe Mart store in Manila. And despite having a hard time finding vendors who could possibly make the shoes he wanted, still, Henry Sy persisted.

Now, there are 78 SM malls operating here in the Philippines, while 20 SM malls in China. From a small business, he managed to expand his business with over 200 companies including SM Prime Holdings, and SM Investments Corp.
