<<<<<< Cinco de Mayo: What Is It All About and What Music Is It Celebrated with Nowadays? Por una mujer bonita

C

inco de Mayo is commonly mistaken as the anniversary of Mexico’s Independence, but that shouldn’t happen anymore. Cinco de Mayo is the commemoration of the bravery of the Mexicans who battled French oppression, one of the most categorical signs of passion and love for the motherland to come from Latin America. Unfortunately, nowadays it’s confused with the glorious work of Miguel Hidalgo and José María Morelos. According to the Pequeño Larousse Ilustrado, “In 1862, the French army undertook the military occupation of Mexico, with the support of conservatives .” Benito Juárez, who became Mexico’s president in 1859 and signed reform laws disliked by some members of the imperialist government, ordered General Ignacio Zaragoza to stop the advance of the French armed forces at the Guadalupe and Loreto forts near the city of Puebla, which he accepted despite having a small army of some 2,000 troops. On May 5, 1862, cannons and rifles went off and impressively, some 1,000 French soldiers were killed. That day, the Mexicans won the battle, but not the war, because soon after, in 1864, Maximilian, Archduke of Austria, (Ferdinand Joseph of Habsburg) would be named emperor

of Mexico by Napoleon III in the Treaty of Miramar. Juárez headed north to take refuge, asking Californians for help. He returned to the capital in 1867, when France withdrew from Mexico under pressure from theUnited States and due to its commitments in Europe. That is why Cinco de Mayo has become a national Mexican holiday. With the Battle of Puebla, Mexicans struck the French for the first time and showed that their nation and its inhabitants would not be easy victims of oppression. Hundreds of museums and murals in Mexico honor this date and in the United States and elsewhere in the world, Mexican neighborhoods and its thousands of residents usually celebrate it with a party, full of music, folk dances, beer, tequila and delicious Mexican food. Therefore, to make sure that your next celebration of the joyous spirit of Cinco de Mayo gets started on the right foot, we’ve compiled a list of different musical productions with which you will surprise your guests and, at the same time, pay tribute to your beloved Mexico. Incorporate these 10 records to your green, white and red party, and you and your guests will wake up with a smile on your face. (CL)

April/May 2008

Nuestros televidentes hablaron y estamos escuchándolos y actuando

It’s true. Pluto was demoted to the status of a dwarf planet. Don’t let this fool you into thinking that he is any less powerful. His enchanted tricks will begin with a station to retrograde on April Fool’s Day. Double check yourself and plan your feet firmly in the ground. This is no time to feel wobbly. Pluto leaves his one degree Capricorn position and makes a steady regression back into Sagittarius from June through November of this year. This last visit in the realm of the poetic wanderer gives us the opportunity to commit to the changes brought about regarding our spiritual path and direction. All decisions and pushes forward must be deliberate and well thought out. Just because it feels like a good idea or seems like a cool thing to do, is not a good reason. Saturn trines the murky necromancer with the earthy energy of Virgo. I’ve been telling you to change your ways and get earth-wise. You’ll soon know exactly what I mean. Looking for a glimmer of hope? Wondering when finances will shift? Feel like sitting still and putting your head between your knees? I understand. These are all the results of the movement of Jupiter and the unavoidable force of Pluto in Capricorn. Focus on your daily practices which promote good health and positive thinking. Meditate and practice positive visualization. Once you have clear ideas, exercise discipline. Take charge at work and within groups. The New Moon in Aries on April 5, brings up familiar issues. Work with them as Mercury races forward in Aries screaming at you to blurt and fuss. Resist the urge to make rash decisions. Cool down, literally! Turn the shower to the blue zone. Jump in the lake or sea. Sit on a mountain or hill and breathe in the cool air. This is especially important for the Air signs of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Help yourself to take the deliberate steps which will see you to your goal safely. Spontaneity will throw you down. Once on your back, you will indeed see where you had intended to go. I want you to get there safe and sound. Pause. Take breaks. Use this mantra: I need twenty four hours to think about it and I will get back to you tomorrow. Exercise this rule on all decisions. The impatience of the Scorpio Full Moon on April, 20 emphatically shows you just where you need to be. Wait till then. To temper the fires of your soul’s desire and get you where you need to be over the next few weeks, please read your Sun Sign.

Yahoo! Telemundo Reveals BUZZworthy Searches for March, Highlights Top 10 Searches in Three Popular Search Categories Yahoo! Telemundo today announced its Top 10 Searches for the month ending March 31 (http://yahootelemundo. com/lomasbuscado), which include the Top 10 overall searches, image searches and music searches for the month, as established by the millions of Yahoo! Telemundo users.

There was a sudden surge in searches for infidelity tests last month, which comes as no surprise given the recent national scandal of New York governor Eliot Spitzer who resigned after allegedly being linked to a high-priced prostitute. Apparently the media frenzy that ensued from the Spitzer scandal got many to question their current relationships and search for indicators of unfaithfulness and also peeked an interest as to who the “the other woman” was -- making 22-year-old aspiring singer and former escort Ashley Alexandra Dupre the second most searched item on the list. Many were also searching for the best of Spring Break; however, there was no break for fans who continued their incessant searches for their favorite celebrity beauties such as Camille Belle, currently starring in the monolithic hit film, 10,000 B.C. and Colombian bikini model Ana Sofia Henao, who is also known as one of the most ‘downloaded’ women on the Internet. There was also much buzz about Jennifer Lopez, especially surrounding the birth of her adorable twins. Internationals Woman’s Day (Dia Internacional de la Mujer), celebrated on March 8, is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women, and was also of interest to Yahoo! Telemundo users. Last, but not least, the release of the popular Guinness World Records for 2008 got many users to look up the newest and most off-the-wall additions to the celebrated list.

the stage, iconic singers/actresses Gloria Trevi and Madonna both still have what it takes to be among the most searched for, while more recent music scene inductees, Hannah Montana and Amy Winehouse, continue on their meteoric rise in popularity among music fans. Every month the Yahoo! Telemundo Top 10 Searches showcases the diverse interests and concerns of U.S. Hispanics around the net, from gorgeous celebrity sightings and salacious political news to funny jokes and the latest consumer obsessions. The monthly list includes a recap of the Top 10 Overall Searches, Top 10 Image Searches and Top 10 Searches in a revolving category, which changes monthly. To come up with the Yahoo! D.J. Kane lands on Planeta Kumbia

H

ay un capítulo nuevo for D.J. Kane, former lead singer of Los Kumbia Kings y los fans are brinca brinca! After a beautiful run as a solo artist, a very grateful D.J. Kane said yes to a generous offer and rejoined creative forces with his former band leader A.B. Quintanilla III. This new chapter began in January of 2008. D.J. Kane was working on a recording project for a label in Corpus Christi, Texas along with Paula Deanda, Baby Bash, Frankie J. & MC Magic. The furthest thing from his mind was being on tour with A.B. Quintanilla III and his former band-mates. Kane was about halfway through creating his latest solo production when he received a call from A.B. Though the two had times in the past when they did not completely agree on process and direction, it was of no concern. A.B. wanted Kane back in the band and D.J. Kane responded with an enthusiastic ¡Sí! It has been a little more than two months and according to Kane, “Everything is going so good! The tour is amazing. Fans are able to enjoy all of their favorite music of the Kumbia Kings with the original voice, composer and producer on stage together. The crowd response has been great! We have done five concerts and a great deal of promotion.” The full repertoire is being played and the band is just beginning their current US tour. Prior to crossing the border back into the USA, a wellseasoned Kumbia All Starz played to a crowd of 65,000 in Costa Rica. The band’s new CD “Planeta Kumbia” was just released on March 4. You may download it on MySpace, purchase it on iTunes and find it at your favorite music store. Kumbia All Starz is more then just a revival band. There is less boy band and more musicality in their performance. Their focus is on the music the way fans want to hear it. Todos nuestros favoritos: Azucar, No Tengo Dinero, Mi Gente, La Cucaracha, Shhh, and Fuiste Mala are being performed with the vocals, harmonies and instrumentation we crave. Kumbia All Starz has previewed the new line up with free shows in San Antonio sharing the stage with Country great, Taylor Swift. They also joined All American Rejects for the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio. Recent promotion spots and video are all over MTV and MTV TR3S. The band was recently featured on the Christina Show in Miami. The Kumbia All Starz recently beamed into Universal City Walk via satellite from the Hard Rock Café in Miami for the Billboard Awards. Mientras, D.J. Kane has the space and support to continue working on his own music. With all of this going on, he also played the Gibson Theater at Universal Studios with MC Magic and Zap. D.J. Kane is looking at this whirlwind of events with a great deal of gratitude. “I had a beautiful run as a solo artist. I learned to appreciate how hard it is to run a business. Now I want to focus on my creativity. It is great to be working with A.B. again. He has so much experience dealing with the business end of things and this affords me the necessary time to focus on my music. I am really enjoying writing, singing, performing and pleasing our fans. The band is amazing. It’s all about the music. “ Join D.J.
