/ 202 editor’S words / greetings and salutations What’s so funny? Honestly, I have no idea. That’s the thing about FatherDaughter moments, they can be full of laughter and joyous. They can be precious and something to be cherished. But oftentimes, it’s the feeling you remember more so than what actually happened. I wasn’t nervous at all prior to my walk down the aisle, up until my song came on that is. Music heightens everything; we both tensed and I remember saying, “Please make me laugh, we can’t be nervous! We have to have fun!” And, we did. For those big moments, small ones and everything in between, we celebrate Father’s Day this month. And we’ve got plenty of great gift ideas to celebrate Dad that go way beyond the typical tie. Our relationship and parenting expert, Kavita Hatten, also has contributed a fascinating feature exploring the special relationship fathers have with their children and how that bond can be strengthened and improved. June is also Men’s Health Month and with health on the mind, we’ve put together a special issue featuring the best East Valley medical professionals. From plastic surgeons to orthopedic and fertility specialists, you’ll find health profiles and listings on the absolute top health Pros the East Valley has to offer. If you’re in the mood for some light summer reads, we’ve got a few of those too. Try the tasty tipples in our Dining section, a summer cocktail recipe roundup courtesy of some of the best Mixologists in town. And whether you’re thinking of grilling Dad some steak or having the friends over for a barbecue this summer, you’ll love our dietician’s piece on how to enjoy barbecued foods with a healthy twist. As always, enjoy the issue!

top doctors / 202 cover story / in that regard, I better understand what women are going through better than the males in the field.” She’s right. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, women accounted for 90% of plastic surgery procedures performed in 2012, with 9.1 million total procedures performed. So it’s no surprise women may feel more comfortable chatting about body changes and fears of getting older with another woman. But the shortage of female physicians who specialize in plastic surgery is no surprise to Dr. Flint. “It’s the length of training required,” she explains. “The training path is extremely lengthy so women interested in starting a family and things like that, it can be real tough. Balancing 90-100 hours of work a week and trying to get married and start a family is not a great mix.”

Meet Patti Flint MD, FACS

Within minutes of chatting, it’s immediately apparent how Dr. Flint is truly a rare find in her field. Besides being a woman practicing cosmetic surgery (a statistic she says makes her among only 6% of plastic surgeons in Arizona) she’s charming, friendly and beautiful, too. The kind of doctor that makes you feel like you’re chatting with a friend. “It’s plastic surgery from a woman’s perspective,” Flint says. “I understand how bathing suits and bras will fit after an augmentation. I think having that sort of insight and understanding as to how it feels to get a little bit older, I think

One of the highest ranking fears among patients is unnatural results; photos of botched Botox jobs and plastic-looking plastic surgery typically comes to mind. But Dr. Flint specializes in achieving natural-looking results, a philosophy she strongly upholds. Her commitment is so strong, in fact, she’ll refer patients seeking unnatural results to other physicians. “I’ve never waivered, even when they request something I consider extreme or unnatural, I prefer to send them somewhere else instead,” she says. (An example she says rarely happens due to an extensive screening process prior to all appointments to ensure patients are a great mutual fit.) Dr. Flint has been in practice since 1996 and is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. She also completed a plastic surgery residency training program by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Flint has office locations in both Mesa and Scottsdale. Meet Randall Craig, MD, FACOG One and a half million. That’s the number of married women in the U.S. ages 15-44 that are currently infertile (unable to get pregnant for at least 12 consecutive months) according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But Dr. Randall Craig and his team at Fertility Treatment Center in Tempe is making major advances and boasts one of the highest pregnancy success rates in the entire Southwest. “We’ve spent 22 years building a major facility that’s not only a top-notch fertility clinic, but also a well-known center for clinical-based science research,” Dr. Craig says. “We are a combined academic and fertility practice with all the latest advances to get people pregnant. We collaborate with ASU to advance reproductive science and have several high-tech patents. We’re always trying to stay a step ahead of the field.” And, it shows.

For every 14 patients that transfer to Fertility Treatment Center from another fertility clinic, only one leaves. He credits this to his high success rate and careful attention to customer service. “A human answers the phone, we’re open holidays,” he explains. “Ovulation happens every day of the year so we’re open every day (except Christmas) through lunch and weekends.” Part of the reason for such personal attention is the fact that Dr. Craig himself was once a fertility patient. Now, his family includes one set of twins and one set of triplets born from IV Fertilization and frozen embryos, respectively. A very successful egg donor program and keeping up with advances in naturopathic treatments are also key to the center’s success. Acupuncture done during the right time of the menstrual cycle, for example, can help boost fertility, Dr. Craig explains. Done during the wrong time, however, it can actually reduce pregnancy rates. He also notes that for many women, one of the biggest hurdles is their own

Many women first consult me at 40-42 years old and by then, the biological clock has run out.” An increase in men coming in with low sperm count in the past few years, due to testosterone therapy, is another major change Dr. Craig cites. Fortunately, new effective treatments are available.

Dr. Morrison was one of the very first physicians in the country to specialize in vein treatment and utilizes the latest technology to evaluate and treat vein problems. He is past president of the American College of Phlebology and currently one of the five vice presidents of the International Union of Phlebology. Dr. Morrison is recognized as an industry leader, trains physicians both nationally and internationally, and speaks the world over on the field of phlebology. Morrison Vein Institute specializes in treatments done in-office for both spider and varicose veins. The minimally-invasive procedures utilized at the Institute treat the source of the venous problem, producing results that are effective and long-lasting, with very minimal post-operative discomfort.

Meet Nick Morrison, MD, FACPh, FACS, RPhS

Unsightly veins can be much more than a cosmetic concern. That’s one thing Nick Morrison, MD, founder of the Morrison Vein Institute, wants to make clear. “The actual cause of varicose veins is faulty vein valves,” he explains. “This not only causes the veins to bulge but can also cause poor circulation and lead to aching, heaviness, discomfort, ankle swelling, night cramps and restless legs, among other problems.” After 23 years with his own general surgical practice in Phoenix, Dr. Morrison, along with his wife, Terri, opened the Morrison Vein Institute in 1996. “I love the patient interaction,

During the two-week trip, the doctors and volunteer staff provide free care to the indigent populations of Ecuador, Peru and Nicaragua. “Working together with other venous specialists to deliver very high quality care to patients who would not receive it otherwise is very rewarding to me,” Dr. Morrison says. The team, Amigos de Salud, has been making the trip for more than 25 years, and preparations are already under way for this summer’s trip to Nicaragua. A true innovator in podiatric medicine, Dr. Zang holds a patent on a joint replacement system for the great toe and recently developed a non-surgical treatment protocol for neuropathy of the foot. He is also currently participating in an FDA study using low-level laser light that can help treat toenail fungus. “I am excited about the new technology available in medicine today,” he says, “There are so many new things that enable us to treat conditions that were untreatable before.”

Meet Kerry Zang, D.P.M.,

Passionate, caring physicians that truly listen can be hard to find, but that’s exactly the kind of experience Dr. Kerry Zang, founder and podiatric medical director of the Arizona Institute of Footcare Physicians, provides. “Patients feel doctors don’t take the time to listen to them anymore. We listen; when we listen, then we are able to make a better educated diagnosis,” Zang says. Dr. Zang founded the Arizona Institute of Footcare Physicians 40 years ago, which now has eight practitioners which deals with a full range foot problems. . The doctors are on the adjunct teaching staff of Midwestern University and podiatry students

The practice handles everything from ingrown toenails, heel pain and diabetic footcare to ankle sprains, bunions and hammertoes. They even help ease the pain of wearing high heels with their “Sole Cushions” procedure. A few of the physicians are also trained in reconstructive arthritic surgery and ankle replacement surgery. Dr. Zang is respected among physicians for his unique diagnostic skills and he is often consulted on complicated and challenging cases. He attributes this to his years of experience and genuine interest in his patients. “I love what I do,” Zang says. Maracay Homes Opens Nine New Arizona Living Collection Communities in the East Valley

M

aracay Homes is opening nine communities in the East Valley as part of the New Arizona Living Collection. With two years of consumer research and over $4 million in investment, Maracay Homes has unveiled eight home collections that include a total of 46 plans, each showcasing amenities and customizations unique for the Arizona homebuyer. Maracay Homes is a Scottsdale-based company, building exclusively in Arizona, and is part of the Fortune 500 Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company. Maracay Homes President and CEO Andy Warren explains the research for this project reached many of Maracay Homes’ current homeowners–finding out likes and dislikes about their home as well as what homeowners would add or change to the floor plan and design. The architecture and customization options for the New Arizona Living Collection are based around these findings. Whereas other companies may take a national approach to home-building, Warren explains, “In our case, it’s really designed around the Arizona consumer.” Homeowners are transitioning towards a more casual lifestyle, Warren says, with open floor plans and an emphasis on storage and convenience. The New Arizona Living Collection offers unique owner entries, with storage cubbies and docking stations to charge electronics; this area replaces the typical laundry room entry. Most homes will feature a laundry room accessible from a secret passage

in the master bedroom’s walk-in closet—a feature that was debuted in a Maracay Homes neighborhood several years ago and gained instant popularity among homebuyers. “With the FlexDesign program, we’re able to configure rooms around lifestyle needs,” Warren says. Generational suites are also an increasingly popular area of the house homeowners are looking for. This space offers semi-private living quarters for extended family members or “boomerang” children who have returned to live at home. A walk-in pantry, walk-in closet in the guest bedrooms and Jack-and-Jill bathrooms are also available within the 46 plans and were all highly requested additions from homeowners throughout the research phase. Bonus rooms and extra garage space allow for hobbies to be kept separate from shared living spaces. With growing families, multiple generations living under one roof and larger storage needs today, Warren says, “We can often create the design that makes sense for the family without forcing them into a much larger home.” Most specific to the Arizona lifestyle may be the outdoor living extension of the home, with a focus on bringing the indoors out by utilizing architectural design techniques. Exterior design details such as front courtyards or wraparound porches provide an extended living space and create a varied streetscape.

“It is an exciting time,” he says. It’s also “one of the busiest times.” The Tempe Diablos are busy in the spring raising money to advance its mission to “improve the lives of the families in the Tempe community.” “We focus a lot on kids’ educational needs and development,” Ottinger, the group’s publicity chief says. Fundraisers included Casino Capers in April at Tempe Diablo Stadium. It featured dinner, entertainment, silent and live auctions, casino-style games and “a lot of fun,” Ottinger says.

“This year we did about $280,000 in scholarships and teacher awards,” Ottinger says. The event touches schools in Tempe, Phoenix, the Ahwatukee area and west Chandler.

Ottinger, 52, who has been volunteering with the Diablos for a few years now, joined not only to help but to connect with others in a club. He looks forward to serving on the 501(c)(3) group’s board.

“We kind of treat it like the Academy Awards for teachers,” he says, with formal attire, speakers and entertainment. “It’s one of those nights that reminds you just how important teachers are and the value that teachers provide.” Spring has also been busy for Ottinger’s family. When not working as Creative-Services Manager at 3TV, Ottinger was celebrating his daughter’s graduation, supporting his wife, Becky Lynn, with her work and attending his children’s activities. This month marks Bill and Becky’s 27th year of marriage. She, too, has a career in broadcast media; she’s a news anchor with KTAR and a voiceover actor. “My wife and I have always tried to stay pretty involved. They both enjoy the performing arts,” with Madison, 18, and Luke, 15, having performed in Valley Youth Theatre plays. At the Ottingers’ Tempe home, giving back is a family affair. Ready for a Summer Job? Program prepares East Valley students for the workforce long before school lets out

W

ith summer fast approaching and schools starting their summer vacations, many teens are on the search for that perfect summer job. No matter if it’s working retail or food service, baby sitting or a professional internship, teens need to know the basics about composing themselves in a professional manner. For some East Valley students, the preparation began long before their vacations – heck, before they are even of legal employment age.

These lucky students got their head start by participating in the Junior Achievement of Arizona (JAAZ) program. The 501c(3) not-for-profit organization prepares students from kindergarten to high school for success in the global economy by showing them how to become self-sufficient. “So many young people enter the workforce without critical skills needed in a professional environment,” says Joyce Richards, president of JAAZ. “We aim to teach students work readiness in a way that the school’s core curriculum can’t through a variety of lessons and hands-on experiences.” While JAAZ can’t take all its students out in the “real world” to provide experience, they can bring the world to the students through interactive programs like JA BizTown™ and JA You’re Hired! JA BizTown™ is a simulated community complete with retail stores, sporting venues, utility companies and government. Students from 4th through 6th grade assume the roles of citizens and work together as a society. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to use critical thinking skills to learn about key economic concepts as they explore and enhance their understanding of free enterprise. At the high school level, students are further prepared for the workforce through intensive programs led by Valley business professionals. The award-winning JA You’re Hired program connects students with hiring managers in a day-long event that showcases newly learned skills like interviewing, resume writing, creative marketing and dressing for success. Of the nearly 500 students that participate, eight to 12 are selected to participate in the JAAZ intern program; they are then placed in paying internship roles for the summer.

“Students that participate in our programs are ahead of the curve when they start their first job,” Richards says. “Not only are we providing them with the tools to achieve personal success, but we are ensuring their generation will make responsible choices to benefit the economic infrastructure of tomorrow.” To learn more about the programs offered by JAAZ or to inquire about bringing the program to a school near you, visit jaaz.org.

A Junior Achievement of Arizona reached more than 95,000 students in the 2012–2013 school year. A More than 50 East Valley elementary, middle and high schools participate in the JAAZ programs, including schools in the Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Higley, Mesa and Tempe school districts. A Junior Achievement USA is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students on workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

Meet Chandler’s Kimberly Becker Chandler hospital volunteer returns to work as certified nurse

T

he telemetry unit overwhelmed Kimberly Becker the first day she arrived to volunteer at Chandler Regional Medical Center. Patients were under close monitoring for undergoing high-risk operations such as heart surgery, and lay in bed connected by too many wires to machines that sometimes shrieked to get attention. Little did Becker know that over the next six years, she’d develop a strong attachment to this place that would change her life. “I was kind of scared in a way,” Becker recalls of that first day. “It’s different when you have a family member in the hospital.” These were strangers in scary situations. But the intrepid 16-year-old pushed through. In time, she grew to love volunteering and adore the people she met. She’d sit by patients’ sides and they’d tell her stories, frightful ones of war and disease. They sensed her genuineness, Becker says, her steady demeanor soothing them through the days of pain and fear on the hospital bed. “I would just be there for them,” says Becker. “They could just talk and the fact that I was there to listen — they just needed someone

meet and greet / 202 neighbors / to listen. I love those moments. I want to spend a half-hour in the room just listening — which I won’t be able to do as a nurse, but I enjoyed doing it as a volunteer.” Official volunteer duties included frequent runs to the supply room to replenish the stock of gauze here and gloves there, but she cherished the connections with patients. They gave her a sense of purpose. Quickly, Becker realized she wanted to make this a career. In July, Becker, now 22, will return to the same unit that intimidated her six years ago to report for duty — this time as a registered nurse. Four years of nursing school provided the education to operate the machines. And if she ever needs supplies — well, she’ll know where to find those, too. “This is a pinnacle point in my life in which I’m starting my career. I see this as very exciting — like in all caps,” Becker says, her equanimity preventing any glimpses of excitement. That calm spirit will undoubtedly serve her well in the days ahead when emergencies happen and chaos demands a clear head. Becker said she’s excited to begin working at a place where she already has so many connections. Although she took a break from volunteering during the more intense bouts of nursing work during college, Becker has returned to donate time at Chandler hospital’s gift shop before her career officially begins.

Looking for a great way to grow your business? Reach the East Valley’s most affluent audience.

The hospital awarded her a $2,000 scholarship to attend ASU, funded by proceeds from the gift shop where Becker now fills the days of her last summer break. With that, many colleagues tell her, the gift has come full circle. And on July 8, when Becker reports to work in the telemetry unit, just a few weeks before she turns 23, a new one will begin.

/ 202 FAMILY / relationships & parenting By Kavita Acharya Hatten MS, LPC, NCC

The Fatherhood Connection

T

raditionally when we think of men and fathers we might think of characteristics such as masculinity, strength and independence. Instinctively, we might not describe fathers as vulnerable, uncertain, or doubtful. But fathers, just as mothers, will naturally experience periods of insecurity during stages of parenting. Because there is no such thing as a “perfect parent”, mothers and fathers must be able to embrace their limitations just as they embrace their strengths. Generally speaking, parents feel more comfortable with their same-sex child; fathers feel more at ease with sons and mothers with their daughters. The same gender relationship relieves some confusion for parents about what to do and how to handle some situations. A mother knowing how she got through a difficult period of adolescence, for example, can help guide her daughter through a similar stage. Likewise, a father may understand his teenage son who feels nervous talking to girls and asking them out on a date. But children

54

202 MAGAZINE \ JUNE 2013 \ 202magazine.com

can learn immensely from the opposite-sex parent. Just as mothers can be invaluable to their son’s lives, fathers can bring immense value to their daughter’s lives, too. Ken Canfield, founder of the National Center for Fathering developed a four-part framework that identifies key components that he calls “Responsible Fatherhood”: Awareness, Involvement, Consistency and Nurturance. Although parenting encompasses a broad spectrum of factors, this can be a general guide on how fathers can stay involved and connected with their sons and daughters.

Be Involved Participate in activities that are important and meaningful to your child, even if it’s something that is outside your “comfort zone”. Attend sporting events, music recitals, go to the mall or ask about homework regularly. The time spent will show your child that he or she is important and valuable.

relationshipsdoing & parenting 202heroes FAMILY // good //202

Show Consistency When parents are consistent, children feel safe and secure. Consistent parenting also promotes positive self esteem. This can be shown by saying “I love you” and by giving hugs on a regular basis. Also, saying to your child that you will be at their soccer game and following through. Making regular “dates” to spend time together and to be available to your child is critical in maintaining healthy relationships.

Have Awareness Be aware of your child’s emotional, physical, cognitive and social needs. Be patient and ask questions. For example, if you want to learn more about your child’s peer relationships, pose a question like, “How are you and Brandon getting along? I know you had an argument recently”. Listen openly and without judgment. Don’t interrupt when your child is sharing and stop the urge to give advice and solve the problem.

Show Nurturance To nurture is to show that you care and love your child by taking care of them, or simply by being there. Give your child daily affirmations that you love, care and are thinking of him or her. As a father, you can be nurturing to your daughter by being respectful, honest and kind. It will show her that the boys (and future men) in her life need to treat her kindly. And as a father to son, you can share something that you struggled with as a child and how you felt about it. Sharing your feelings allows your son to see you in a vulnerable light and realize that being vulnerable is part of developing healthy relationships. Whether you have a son or daughter, remember your parenting will never be perfect. If you accept your vulnerabilities as a father you can then have a clearer lens as to how to show “the father inside of you” to your child.

Swim Safety L

azy rivers, water slides and backyard pools–summer is here which means lots of fun in the sun and, of course, swimming. While swimming pools make a great summer oasis, pool playtime comes with responsibility. According to the National Safety Council, an estimated 1,000 children drown every year with the majority of these incidents occurring right in a person’s own backyard. And Arizona especially ranks high in drowning rates when compared to the rest of the country. “We have great weather year-round we have over 400,000 pools in just the Maricopa area, so our access to water is very high plus we have rivers, lakes and canals,” explains Tracey Fejt, RN and injury prevention coordinator for Banner Health. “When we’re thinking about swim safety for kids we always have to remember it’s several layers of protection not just one thing is going to save them.” These “layers” of protection Fejt is referring to include a good barrier to ensure the pool is blocked off,

56

constant adult supervision, CPR and swim training. “Every parent should know CPR”, she says. Children as young as nine months can enroll in swim lessons. But don’t assume that’s enough; even if a child knows how to swim, remember that being around a pool unattended is still dangerous. And parents shouldn’t rely on floaties or water wings for protection. “These are just toys, not lifesaving devices,” Fejt says. She recommends purchasing life jackets and to check the label to make sure it is U.S. Coast Guard approved. What about when the pool isn’t in use? Arizona law requires that all swimming pools or contained bodies of water 18 inches or more must be protected by a barrier. Have certified professionals install a self-latching fence to keep young children from wandering into the pool area unattended. Also, adults should keep a lock or pool alarm as an extra preventative measure and keep pool area off limits at all times.

playing in the loop / 202 fun / Fejt also suggests blocking lesser-known areas of access, such as the doggy door. “Two kids died this year because they got through a doggy door,” she says. “If the doggy door goes directly to the pool, it needs to be blocked off.” Some other helpful water safety tips to keep your family safe: A To avoid accidents discuss pool rules and safety measures with guests and family members before they enter the water. A Accidents can happen. Prevent falls by encouraging swimmers to walk around the pool to avoid slips and falls. A Make sure that at least one adult is properly able to perform CPR in case of an emergency. A Remove any toys or objects that may entice children into the pool area. A Because alcohol impairs motor skills parents should never drink and swim. Summer swimming will guarantee countless hours of fun for kids and families but by taking these simple precautions, families can keep their children safe and cool all summer long.

4 Healthy Grilling Tips

P

icnics, family reunions, Father’s Day and warm, sunny days call for firing up the grills for those favorite summer foods. This summer, think beyond the heavy burger and try these tips for expanding your grilling menu and revamping to a healthier grilling experience.

Skip the Char Foods cooked at intense, high temperatures from grilling with open flames or deep frying cause chemical changes in the food, creating heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These substances have been linked to damaging cells’ DNA and causing cancer, also increasing inflammation and accelerating the aging process of tissues and organs throughout the body. Limit these compounds from being formed by:

X Keeping the grill clean (brush and wipe with damp cloth). X Choosing lean, trimmed cuts of meat: High-fat meats fuel and flare flames. X Marinating food at least 30 minutes in a base of lemon, fruit juice or vinegar mixed with garlic, rosemary, or other herbs and spices. Their antioxidants help to slow and reduce the amount of harmful chemical changes. X Cooking slower over a lower flame. It may take a little longer, but it’s worth the benefits.

eating and living well / 202 nutrition / X Using the tools. These are simple ways to prevent the burn and still infuse some incredible flavor. X Try grilling baskets or trays, they keep food from falling off the grill and make flipping easier. X Try planks (remember, it needs to be soaked first!). Planks keep food from sticking to the grill and out of the flames, while giving it the most amazing taste. X Try foil, it’s the most affordable option and gives more of a “steamed” effect. X Balance meal with lots of antioxidant, nutrient-dense fresh veggies and fruit.

Grill from the Garden The veggie possibilities are endless and always taste better with a little outdoor, grilling flavor. Asparagus, tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, peppers, cauliflower, corn, eggplant and potatoes are great ones to try. To pack in the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients that boost health & immunity, build kabobs.

Keep it Real Choose grass-fed, “free” (free-range, cage-free, antibiotic- and hormone-free) selections. The American Institute for Cancer Research links processed meats like hotdogs, salami, sausage and cold cuts with increased cancer risk no matter the portion size. If you can’t resist, be sure to go nitrate-free.

Be Creative Grills work for much more than just meat and veggies! Try grilling fruit like pineapple, peaches, pears or bananas to top salads, serve as a side or for a flavorful dessert. Grilled pizzas, tortillas, pitas and even mushrooms are tasty, too and make a great meat alternative.

Summer Skin Savers

By Katie Snyder

Don’t Let Your Skin Sizzle this Summer! Protect yourself with the best SPF products and sun care tips

F

rom BBQs to trips to the pool, summer means plenty of fun in the sun. And sun safety is never out of season. While we all need a little sun exposure (one of our sources of vitamin D), it doesn’t take much time in the sun before repeated exposure to the ultraviolet rays can cause sunburns, skin damage and even skin cancer. “Just one severe sunburn in a lifetime more than doubles the chance of developing melanoma, the most dangerous form of cancer,” says Dr. Scott Tannehill of Arizona Center for Cancer Care in Gilbert. Luckily, we can still have fun in the sun and show our skin a little TLC by taking simple precautions. “Choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 or higher and apply 20 to 30 minutes before going outside to allow time for sunscreen to absorb into skin,” Dr. Tannehill says. Not sure what to buy? Try one of these four picks.

For Day-to-Day Wear

Try Skin Authority’s Sunscreen Moisturizer SPF 30. This multiaction, creamy white moisturizer feels light as you apply it—unlike some high SPF products that are thick and greasy. Great for every day wear under makeup and a bonus—it helps slow down the signs of aging skin and hyperpigmentation. $42 at skinauthority.com.

For Summer Lip Perfection

Carry lip moisturizer that contains SPF to keep lips, soft, smooth and protected. For the best protection, try Merlot Lip Moisturizer. This fragrance free balm contains natural antioxidants and grape seed oil to make sure your lips aren’t left bare and vulnerable. $1.95 at merlotskincare.com. 62

looking good inside and out / 202 beauty / For Quick Application

Don’t Become a Statistic!

For quick application, opt for a spray. Try Eau Thermale Avène Moderate Protection Spray SPF 20. This light-weight spray (it’s 50 percent spring water) soothes and softens skin while protecting against harmful UVA rays, one of the main causes of premature aging, sun spots and leathery skin, and UVB rays, the main cause of sunburns and skin cancers. $24 at aveneusa.com.

For Men

Men in general tend to spend more time outside than women. Because men typically have larger pores on their skin, they are more prone to breakouts and clogged pores. To help safeguard your skin this summer, try Glytone Sunscreen Lotion SPF 40. This fab formula is hypoallergenic, fragrance free and oil free which makes it perfect for protecting guy’s most vulnerable areas like shoulders, back and arms. $37 at dermstore.com. Keep your skin from sizzling by protecting your body from the sun’s harmful rays. Embrace your natural beauty and complexion and invest in a good self-tanner or bronzer to give you that summer glow—your skin will thank you!

While summer means fun in the sun, make sure you aren’t getting too much of a good thing. According to Arizona Center for Cancer Care (AZCCC) in Gilbert, there are many myths and misconceptions about sun health that simply aren’t true. They include: A Tanning beds are safe—they are not A Getting a “base” tan prevents sun damage—it doesn’t A A few sunburns can’t hurt—they do A Skin cancer isn’t dangerous—it is AZCCC suggests making sunscreen a habit and following these tips for avoiding the consequences of over exposure from the sun. Stay out of the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

X Avoid getting a sunburn X Wear sunscreen daily and reapply every two hours

X Say “no” to tanning beds X Wear long sleeves outside, even when it’s 120 degrees
