She taught at Eastern Michigan University for 20 years in music education and recently retired from there in 2016. She retired from Monroe public schools with 25 years of service in music education. She is also currently the choral conductor of Monroe County Community College Agora Chorale and MCCC Prelude, a children’s choir. Mrs. Brodie is an Emeritus member of (MSVMA) Michigan School Vocal Music Association where she served as District Manager, Honors Choir Supervisor, State Solo and Ensemble Supervisor, Sight reading and Repertoire chair, and the Adjudication committee. She is the secretary for (ACDA) the American Choral Director’s Association Michigan. Catherine has directed several State Honor’s Choirs. Her choirs have also been invited to sing on MSVMA and ACDA-MI Conference programs. In 1997, Catherine was chosen by the Michigan Music Teachers Association as teacher of the year for her work in Elementary Music Education. She was also selected as teacher of the year in 2005 by MSVMA. This past October she was awarded the Maynard Klein lifetime achievement award from the American Choral Directors Association of Michigan. She is a member of the John Tyner Chorale, and St. Paul’s Methodist Chancel Choir. She directs the St. Paul’s United Methodist bell choir. Catherine and her husband Bill have three sons; Matthew, Andrew and Brian and three grandsons: Liam, Aidan and Caleb.

Alyce Sangster Alyce Sangster, accompanist, grew up in the small town of Shafter, California. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She subsequently taught music in Arizona, where she met and later married Walter Sangster, a band director from Ypsilanti. They live in Ypsilanti and have four children. Mrs. Sangster teaches private piano lessons and particularly enjoys accompanying. She currently accompanies for Lincoln Schools and Carillon Women’s Chorale in addition to MCCC Agora Chorale.

Inger Oswald Inger Oswald, accompanist, feels very blessed to be able to work with Cathy Brodie and the Prelude singers. She and her husband Jon have lived in Monroe for almost eight years. Inger serves as organist and youth choir director at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church as well as full time accompanist for the Monroe High School Vocal Music Department. She graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Music in Education. She has taught K-12 general and vocal music in public and private schools, has taught private voice and piano and previously accompanied the Madrigal Chorale under the former direction of Dr. Robert Martin. Inger is completing a Master of Arts in Church Music at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio.

MCCC Prelude Choir MCCC Prelude was started in 2012 to enable the young singers in the Monroe Area to have a quality music program that was above and beyond the school music programs. Monroe County Community College graciously supported the decision to begin the chorale which is made up of fifth through eighth grade students. Our mission statement is: “to educate and inspire children to understand and value the art of singing and its lifelong impact on teamwork, dedication and the human spirit”. We have also been supported with scholarship money from United Way of Monroe, Kiwanis, we have received a foundation grants from MCCC to cover music and scholarships. Our choir has performed with MCCC Agora Chorale, The John Tyner Chorale, and Carrilon Women’s Chorale, Chariscurro Men’s Chorale, and the St. Paul’s United Methodist Praise Ringers. In May of 2014, the choir won first place and a Superior rating from Festival in the Parks at Cedar Point. In May of 2016, they traveled to Chicago for a Music Festival where they took first place and had a superior rating. Last year they took first place in Festival in the Parks in Cincinnati, Ohio

MCCC Agora Chorale MCCC Agora Chorale has a long tradition in Monroe that goes back over 50 years to the start of the college. Past conductors include Bob Merkle, Sharon Metz, Elaine Rugila, and John Tyner. Under Mrs. Brodie’s baton the choir has been involved in the Bicentennial Concert in honor of the War of 1812. They have also performed in “Late Night Catechism” in the Meyer Theatre. Many of the Women of Agora Chorale also sang as the nun’s in a Monroe Community Players presentation of “The Sound of Music”. The choir is a perfect blend of town and gown singers who range in age from 16 to 80.

St. Paul's Praise Ringers

St. Paul’s Praise Ringers have been in existence for at least 50 years. There have been many ringers and conductor’s through the years but the organization has been playing for church services throughout all of this time. This volunteer group plays four or five times per church year with summers off. In addition to their church service they have also played for citywide bell choir festivals at the IHM and at Monroe County Community College. They have also paired with the Monroe First Presbyterian church bell choir for combined bell choirs and performed at both churches.
