Schoolcraft College Wind Ensemble Schoolcraft College Wind Ensemble was established more than forty years ago and is comprised of Schoolcraft College Students, faculty and members of the community. The ensemble, conducted by Paul Michalsen, presents eight concerts annually both on and off campus. The concert schedule encompasses a diverse repertoire of classical, pops, and jazz programs, along with community and educational outreach efforts. With membership ages from 16 to 90, it is the ensemble’s goal to bridge the gap of the generations and present a varied musical experience to members, and our audiences. Selected music includes classic Wind Band literature selections, contemporary and culturally diverse presentations.

The John Tyner Chorale The John Tyner Chorale is made up of singers with a passion for choral music and are selected by the founder and director, John C. Tyner, many are former members of the Monroe High School choral music program or colleagues and friends of the director. The Chorale is committed to performing the highest quality literature in excellent acoustical environments. The ensemble provides an ideal performance venue for experienced and motivated choral singers whose goal it is to make music at a high level. Their performances are well attended and highly anticipated events offered in and around the Monroe community.


Paul M. Michalsen Paul Michalsen is an active life-long educator, professional musician, and MSBOA adjudicator. His musical experiences include performing across the United States, Great Britain, and China with organizations such as the International Trumpet Guild, Association of Concert Bands, Association of College Bands, and South Shore Symphony Orchestra. Paul has been an active member of the Motor City Brass Band and has performed regularly with the Capital City Brass Band, Oakland Brass Band, Dodworth Saxhorn Band, Royal Oak Symphony, Dexter Symphony, Livonia Symphony and is the founding director of the Plymouth Brass Ensemble, a professional performance ensemble. Paul received his undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University and graduate degrees from Wayne State University. He served as a music educator in the Port Huron Area School District. Prior to joining the faculty of Schoolcraft College, Paul was an Educational Consultant with the Michigan Department of Education in Regional Planning and Compliance and served as President of the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children. Paul is an elected representative for Schoolcraft College in the Michigan Education Association for Higher Education (MAHE) and National Education Association Higher Education. At Schoolcraft College, he is an adjunct music professor and Wind Ensemble Director, also serving as Vice President of the Schoolcraft Faculty Form, and is a Core Abilities Team Leader for the Office of Curriculum Assessment. Recently, he completed a second term as faculty representative on the contract negotiation team, and is a recipient of the 2011 Schoolcraft College Presidential Recognition Award and 2013 Faculty Forum Teaching Excellence Award.


John C. Tyner John holds degrees from Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University, where he was Associate Conductor of the Choral Union. He retired in 2005 as the Coordinator of Music Education for Monroe Public Schools. Mr. Tyner is currently Director of Music at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe, the John Tyner Chorale, and former director of the Monroe County Community College Agora Chorale. In conjunction with the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, John, each year presents a community wide presentation of G.F. Handel’s “Messiah”. He formerly conducted the Monroe Youth Chorale and Youth Orchestra. He has been active in both the Michigan School Vocal Music Association and the American Choral Directors Association. He is also a former member of the Board of Directors at the River Raisin Centre for the Arts, and the Monroe City/County Fine Arts Council. He was elected by his colleagues as the Michigan Vocal Music Teacher of the Year, the Michigan Music Educator's Teacher of the Year. He conducted the 1984 High School Men’s State Honors Choir the 1997 High School SATB State Honors Choir and the 2004 State Junior High/Middle School SATB Choir. Additionally, he was awarded the Michigan Administrator of the year award for 2000 and as an Accomplished Music Educator by the Music Educators National Conference in 2001. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious Maynard Klein award from the American Choral Directors Association. He and his wife Catherine have two children, Matthew (Molly) and Sara (Jeff) Grzywinski, three grandsons Orion, Harrison and Emmett and two granddaughters, Josephine and Marilyn.


Dr. William E. McCloskey Dr. William E. McCloskey is (finally) retired after twenty-three years at MCCC. During that time, he has performed with the Monroe Community/ College Symphonic Band numerous times. He is excited to read two of his favorite pieces—The Gettysburg Address and The Tell-Tale Heart. Bill and Mark have worked together for many years. During Bill’s twentyone years at Jefferson High School (a long time ago), he served as band announcer at the home football games. Bill has also been involved with community theater since 1968. His favorite roles are King Lear (King Lear) and the Stage Manager (Our Town) for the Monroe Community Players, The Hunchback (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) for the Huron Civic Theater, and Big Jule (Guys and Dolls) and Clem Rogers (Will Rogers Follies) at the Croswell Theater.

Military Families of Monroe County Military Families of Monroe County is a non-profit organization supporting service members from Monroe County. We provide moral support for active duty, veterans, and families in military service to our country. MFMC, as we are known, is in our 8th year. We supply care packages twice per year in May and November to all who serve from Monroe County. MFMC also provides "Hero Homecomings" for all combat veterans.


Mark B. Felder Fresh off conducting an encore piece with the Detroit Symphonic Orchestra, Mark B. Felder is starting his twenty-sixth year directing the band at Monroe County Community College. Before and during that time, he was the band director of the award-winning Jefferson High School Bands for twenty-nine years. Mark served twelve years in local and state offices of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, including President of District 12. He was named Band Director of the Year for District 12 of MSBOA. He also was named Music Alumnus Guest Conductor of the Year in 1988 for Eastern Michigan University. Mark has been musical director for over 150 musicals including 12 years as a musical director at Croswell Opera House in Adrian, Michigan. He received a nomination for the prestigious Jeff Award in Chicago for Best Musical Direction for the second national tour of Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. He is currently the musical director of the Dodworth Saxhorn Band, a Civil War-era brass band. Mark has been a guest lecturer at the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, University of Toledo, and Adrian College. Mark is owner of Vivo Productions, a local recording studio. He performed for years with the Johnny Knorr Orchestra, and has toured with stars of the Lawrence Welk, Manhattan Transfer, and the Shrine Circus. Mark and his wife, Ann, have three children and one grandchild and live in Monroe, Michigan.

Ticket packages do not include VIP seating. No refunds or exchanges. Event information is subject to change at the discretion of MCCC. Discounts Groups of 15 or more, seniors, and MCCC staff and students can receive a $2 discount off the full ticket price when tickets are purchased in person at the MCCC Cashier’s Office prior to the day of the event. Discounts will not be given the day of the performance. Tickets are based on availability, so please make your plans early. Student Rush Monroe County Community College students with a valid student I.D. can purchase up to two tickets at half price 30 minutes before the start of any show.
