Is your PPE the real deal?

Avex Cable Jointing expands in GB Limavady company, Avex Cable Jointing has been assisted by Invest Northern Ireland to invest £376,000 and create five new, high-value jobs to expand its business operations in Britain. Invest NI has offered financial assistance of £47,500 towards the expansion, and the new posts are already in place. Avex Director, Ryan Kelly, said, “This important expansion will enable us to enhance our relationships with major contractors by providing additional resources that will mean we will be able to expand the highly skilled services we offer them.”

Avex has further benefited from Invest NI support in the form of financial assistance through the Interim Manager Scheme to fund the employment of an experienced manager to help the company manage its growth and seek out new business opportunities. The company, which now employs 26 people, is also working with a power industry training body with a view to employing apprentices to further enhance its workforce. Two firms sentenced for misuse of NICEIC logo NICEIC has warned companies over the misuse of its logo following to successful convictions recently. Two company officials have been ordered to pay more than £30,000 for a number of offences relating to mis-selling the Green Deal scheme, failure to provide the appropriate cancellation rights and mis-use of the NICEIC logo. In a separate case, another contractor was sentenced to a community order of more than 180 hours for unauthorised use of the NICEIC approved contractor logo and two other logos. “These latest prosecutions show how seriously we take misuse of our logo,” commented NICEIC CEO, Emma Clancy. “It also sends out the message that anyone thinking about misusing our logo will be caught and dealt with appropriately by the courts.” Contractors caught falsely claiming to be

members will be named and shamed on the NICEIC website and their details passed to Trading Standards. Despite several warnings recently about counterfeit and inferior personal protective equipment (PPE) finding its way into local workplaces, the problem appears to be growing, according to workplace equipment supplier, Slingsby. The company is warning businesses to be extra vigilant when purchasing PPE and welcomes proposed legislation that would make retailers and distributors responsible for ensuring that the products they sell meet the required safety standards. Slingsby supplies more than 35,000 workplace products across all industries, including an extensive range of PPE. The company says there are a number of unscrupulous operators selling a wide range of everyday products, including high visibility clothing, gloves and goggles, that fail to meet minimum safety requirements. Lee Wright, Marketing Director at Slingsby, said, “A lot of the examples we have seen are badly made and fail to offer any real protection, as well as being non-compliant with safety standards. Some products even come with falsified certifications. “The fact that to the untrained eye, many of these products still look the part often makes it difficult to spot they are fake. This means it is important to buy PPE through reputable suppliers and to ensure it is certified to the appropriate British or European standards.” T: (N) 028 9032 4905 or (RoI) 1850 200 633 E: sales@slingsby.com W: www.slingsby.com

Wind blows to generate electricity Almost a fifth (19.5%) of the entire electricity requirement for Northern Ireland came from renewable sources in 2014, 18.3% of which was from wind energy, representing significant progress towards the Northern Ireland Executive’s target of 40% electricity from renewables by 2020. In addition, January 2015 saw the highest levels of wind energy ever recorded in Northern Ireland, culminating in 556MW of electricity generated on January 7 (14.45pm). This represented 42% of total electricity needs at that moment, equating to the equivalent of powering 361,400 homes. These important milestones and the key requirements of the renewable energy sector for the economic and environmental future of Northern Ireland topped the agenda at the fifth annual Northern Ireland Renewables Industry Group (NIRIG) conference, in Belfast. The conference also marked the launch of NIRIG’s report on the wind industry in Northern Ireland, which outlined the progress being made by the local renewables sector, including what is necessary to continue to deliver sustainable energy and all of its associated benefits. Patrick McClughan, Chair of NIRIG, which represents the collective voices of Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) and RenewableUK in Northern

This year’s SkillELECTRIC competition is now well underway, with a number of regional events scheduled to take place across the UK in April and June. Talented electrotechnical apprentices registered to take part in the competition will be judged on a series of challenging practical tests in a bid to be named the 2015 SkillELECTRIC champion and follow in the footsteps of Northern Ireland apprentice, Ryan Connor, who won the 2014 title. Those who score most highly will progress to a UK final held in November at the prestigious Skills Show, the UK’s largest skills and careers event, with over 80,000 visitors. Candidates may also have the chance to represent their country and compete internationally at future WorldSkills competitions. Designed to promote and showcase high standards and skills across the electrotechnical industry, the event has National Electrotechnical Training (NET) and the Joint Industry Board (JIB) as its premier sponsors. “This competition is an excellent means of identifying and celebrating the best in our industry - an industry in which skills are vital,” said Iain Macdonald, NET CEO. “Those who take part in SkillELECTRIC are a shining example of what today’s apprentices bring to our industry,” added Steve Brawley, Chief Executive of the JIB. Patrick McClughan, Chair, NIRIG.

Ireland, said, “It is clear that significant progress is being made by the industry in delivering renewables for Northern Ireland. 2015 marks a critical tipping point, and a period of great change for our energy mix. The fact that renewable energy now contributes almost a fifth of the entire electricity requirement for Northern Ireland is a massive achievement. This represents a total of 1,595 GWh, most of which was generated from wind. What this means is that 628,054 tonnes of CO2 were saved in Northern Ireland in 2013-14 by clean, renewable energy - the equivalent of taking 130,000 cars off NI roads.” T: (NI) 028 9051 1220 W: www.ni-rig.org Ballymena: Units 57-59, Ballymena Business Centre, 62 Fenaghy Road, Ballymena, Armagh: Armagh Business Centre, 2 Loughgall Road, Armagh T: 028 2565 0750 – F: 028 2563 0725 – E: enquiries@ett-ni.org www.ett-ni.org

New ETCI technical committee for electrostatics The Electro-Technical Council of Ireland (ETCI) has hosted the inaugural meeting of a new technical committee to address electrostatics. Under the chairmanship of Mel Gannon, ETCI TC21 will follow and contribute to the technical work of IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) TC101, and will co-ordinate all aspects of Ireland’s input to the technical work at international level. It has been agreed that the scope of ETCI TC21 will co-ordinate the national input to the work of IEC TC101 with reference to the standardisation in the field of electrostatics to provide general guidance on test methods to evaluate the generation, retention and dissipation of electrostatic charges; and ascertaining the effect of electrostatic discharges. In addition the scope of the ETCI TC21 committee will incorporate methods of simulation of electrostatic phenomena for testing purposes; and the requirements for design and implementation of handling areas or procedures, equipment, and materials used to reduce or eliminate electrostatic hazards or undesirable effects. Design Certificates for electrical installations The Electrical Contractors Safety & Standards Association (ECSSA) has reported a number of queries from electrical contractors who say they have been asked to produce a Design Cert for electrical installations which they are undertaking. In response, the ECSSA wants to make it clear that the only electrical certificates recognised in the Republic of Ireland are those produced by the Electro-Technical Council of Ireland (ETCI), and these are all intended to certify a completed installation and record the test measurements obtained. “The design of an electrical installation is a matter for the architect or the M&E consultant involved in the design team, and on that designer falls the responsibility of ensuring that the installation, as designed, complies with the ETCI National Wiring Rules and the relevant sections of the Building Regulations,” said Breeda Moynihan Cronin, Chairperson, ECSSA. “The Public Liability Insurance which registered electrical contractors are obliged to carry excludes cover for design work. This must be covered by Professional Indemnity Insurance, which a designer should have in place. “We have obtained the opinion of Senior Counsel on this issue, and it has been confirmed to us that electrical contractors should not accept any liability for the design of an installation, nor should they sign any document which purports to be a Design Certificate for the electrical installation.” T: (RoI) 064 6637266 E: info@ecssa.ie W: www.ecssa.ie

Northern Switchgear pays tribute to Bobby Skelly Gerry Keon, Northern The late Bobby Skelly. Switchgear, remembers a friend and colleague… Boxing Day morning 2014. 5.30am. The phone rings and it’s my boss Cahal from Dublin Airport on his way to Florida with the words “Gerry. Bobby’s dead”. My heart sank. My best mate and work colleague for over 25 years had died of a massive heart attack at the age of 53. Bobby, in or out of work, was always the first person to help others. He made us all laugh with his quick wit every morning at work. Bobby had been working at Northern Switchgear for nearly 12 years as one of our van drivers. Everybody got to know him well, especially those he delivered to on a daily basis in counties Down, Armagh, Tyrone and Fermanagh. Testimony to that was that many travelled to Belfast on New Year’s Eve to attend his funeral mass. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and for his loving wife Una and his sons Gerard and Robert. A gentle giant.

New workplace vehicle safety campaign The Health and Safety Authority has launched a new awareness-raising campaign in Ireland, aimed at flagging the dangers of going on ‘autopilot’ when operating workplace vehicles. Last year, 28 of the 55 deaths reported to the Authority involved vehicles. Alarmingly, the involvement of vehicles in deaths at work increased in 2014, for the first time in three years, to 54% of the total figures. This is up 13% from the previous fiveyear average for 2009-2013 of 41%. The dangers associated with the use of fork lift trucks and other vehicles in the workplace are often underestimated. However, incidents involving workplace vehicles are usually very serious, and often fatal. These vehicles are extremely heavy, even when unloaded, and there is very little protection for pedestrians. Crush and foot injuries tend to be common injuries suffered by pedestrians and because of the level of damage done, can lead to amputations. “The dangers can be minimised through some simple steps,” said Deirdre Sinnott, Senior Inspector with the Health and Safety Authority. “Keep pedestrians away from vehicle activities. Take extra care when reversing vehicles. Keep speeds to a minimum, and make sure reversing alarms are working, to warn colleagues of the dangers of moving vehicles. Loading and unloading is also a key accident trigger. Always stay alert for co-workers or other pedestrians who might wander into the path of your moving vehicle.” T: (RoI) 1890 289 389 E: wcu@hsa.ie W: www.hsa.ie

TEEU signs historic affiliation agreement Ireland’s largest craft union, the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union (TEEU) has signed a landmark global federation agreement with the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices (UA), which represents 370,000 craft workers in the United States, Canada and Australia. The signing ceremony was hosted at the Irish Embassy in Washington. “The UA and TEEU Federation brings an entirely new international perspective to the work of both of our unions”, Eamon Devoy, General Secretary of the TEEU said. “With the ever increasing globalisation of business there is a need for unions in the engineering sector to work more closely together, to ensure that proper employment standards are developed and maintained. “This includes the imperative that engineering workers are suitably trained and retrained to meet the demands of change based technologies that are crucial to the needs of successful business. This agreement will greatly benefit all of us.” The Irish Ambassador to the United States, Ms Anne Anderson, added, “I am delighted to host here at the Embassy of Ireland in Washington DC the signing of a landmark global federation agreement between two strong unions straddling the Atlantic Ocean, the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices (UA), based in North America and the Technical,

Engineering and Electrical Union (TEEU), based in Ireland. This federation promises to deliver considerable benefits for the members of both unions, especially in terms of expanding training and future employment opportunities for the members of both organisations. The timing of this agreement, coming as it does as both the Irish and US economies return to strong growth rates, bodes especially well for its successful implementation and future development. I wish the UA and the TEEU every success in making this global federation agreement a successful trans-Atlantic reality over the period ahead.” T: 1890 488 338 E: info@teeu.ie W: www.teeu.ie

Energy upgrades worth €118million have resulted in 24,600 homes and 900 public and commercial buildings being improved, and 2,400 jobs maintained, through the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources’ Better Energy programme in 2014. The figures were announced by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) in its end-of-year statement, which also reported that €53million of the investment came directly through Government grant support, managed by SEAI. Dr Brian Motherway, SEAI CEO, said, “2014 was also a record year for Building Energy Ratings, with 120,000 published by more than 800 registered assessors. One quarter of our homes now has a BER and we are seeing evidence of BERs beginning to influence property sale and rental prices. Organisations also continued their drive for energy efficiency in 2014, with SEAI support to industry helping to save €35million.” T: (RoI) 01 808 2100 W: www.seai.ie

Middle Eastern export success for Cubis

ESB announcement highlights apprenticeship boost The recent announcement by ESB that it is set to recruit 300 new apprentices is a significant boost to the electrical industry that reflects a positive trend within the sector. Recent figures from the Construction Industry Federation show significant increases within the wider electrical industry while the Government has also confirmed its commitment to renewing and significantly expanding the apprenticeship system in Ireland. The CIF 2014 statistics for new apprentices show an increase when compared to 2013 of 61.9% in electrical, 84.8% for electrical instrumentation and 33.3% for electronic security systems. These figures will be boosted in 2015 with ESB’s announcement that it is to recruit 300 apprentices over the next five years as part of a large scale recruitment and development programme. The announcement took place at the ESB Networks Training Centre in Portlaoise where Network Technician apprentices complete 23 weeks of training during their four-year electrical apprenticeship. This is in addition to 42 weeks spent in Solas and the IT colleges, and significant on-the-job training segments. There has traditionally been keen interest in the apprenticeship programme, which is open to candidates who have successfully completed their Junior certificate. This recruitment of apprentices will help fill a skills gap predicted in ESB and the energy sector over the coming years.

TRAINING WORKS

ESB Chief Executive, Pat O’Doherty, said, “This programme is a critical part of the ongoing development and transformation of ESB. We are Ireland’s leading energy company, our staff are among the best in the world and are recognised globally for their skills in the energy sector. We want to continue to renew and develop this workforce, for our company and our economy. “I am very pleased to announce that we will be recruiting 300 new apprentices on a phased basis over the next five years. This represents a e40million investment in the training and development of our future workforce.” In his role as Chairman of the Apprenticeship Council, Pat O’Doherty also has a view as to the wider potential for the apprenticeship model to provide a way for Ireland to upskill its workforce and optimise the potential of its talent pool in a way that is aligned to the future skills needed in the labour market. He added, “As an industry-led initiative, the Council is working to ensure that the development of skills in Ireland is focused on areas where there will be greatest need, thus benefiting both employers - by providing a supply of skills appropriate to the evolving needs of labour market, and apprentices - by ensuring their skills are relevant to future industry needs.” T: (RoI) 1850 372 757 or (NI) 00353 21 494 7260 W: www.esb.ie

Lurgan company, Cubis Industries, is celebrating a significant export success in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Cubis Industries is a world-class innovator of structural preformed products for underground network access and protection, including products for the power and telecommunications sectors. A six-figure contract has now been secured in Abu Dhabi which will see Cubis provide systems to be used in the revamp of the telecommunications network. Cian Cantwell, Cubis Director of International Sales, said, “This is tremendously encouraging business for us in a different sector. The business was secured following our participation with Invest NI at the GITEX 2014 technology trade show in Dubai last October. “It was an immensely positive show for us. We benefited enormously from the advice, experience and very practical support from the Invest NI team in Dubai before, during and in the months following the exhibition.” Speaking from Oman at the end of a trade mission to the Middle East, Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster added, “This is an immensely important contract which will allow Cubis to make a substantial contribution to a project to develop a new and highly sophisticated telecoms system in the UAE. The new contract is a further example of the scale of business opportunities in the UAE for Northern Ireland companies prepared to invest in growth in global markets.” T: (NI) 028 3831 3100 or (RoI) 048 3831 3100 E: info@cubisindustries.com W: www.cubisindustries.com

Dunlop & Hamilton offers customer focused solutions

hen a company has been in existence for over six decades, there is a tendency to think that this simple fact alone will bring business through the door. But there is a buzz and energy about Dunlop & Hamilton that belies the company’s standing of over 65 years as a leading electrical wholesaler and is more consistent with an up-and-coming company trying to make a name for itself. One of the reasons behind this enthusiasm is that Dunlop & Hamilton is more than just an electrical wholesaler. In recent years, the company has

provided added value to customers with the introduction of services such as lighting design and project management through to solar and energy solutions and lighting and fire design. The company is also providing dedicated training. However, these services have been combined with the advantages of the latest technology and a dedicated drive towards service that focuses on the needs of Dunlop & Hamilton’s customers rather, than trying to match what competitors are offering. “Our primary focus is on our customers and how we can provide them with solutions to make their lives easier,” explained Lee Barry, Northern Ireland Area Manager

for Dunlop & Hamilton. “This support also provides greater value for money along with a broad product range of sustainable and competitively-priced products.” With branches in Belfast, Portadown and Coleraine, Dunlop & Hamilton is also an integral part of Newey & Eyre and the Rexel group. Newey & Eyre is one of the UK’s leading electrical wholesalers, while Rexel is a global leader in the distribution of electrical supplies and services in three main markets - industrial, commercial and residential – so it is clear to see how customers at Dunlop & Hamilton can benefit from having access to the expertise this company offers.

pecialist services and superb stock levels are one thing, but if customers can’t receive the products they need, when they need them, then it means little. Selecting products is easy with Dunlop & Hamilton’s unique live stock system that enables staff to access up-to-the-minute stock levels of circa £50million. That is why Dunlop & Hamilton ensures a same-day delivery service anywhere in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain, Monday to Friday. The company’s three strategicallylocated branches in Belfast, Coleraine and Portadown mean you are never too far away from a Dunlop & Hamilton trade counter, while the company also has a dedicated team of seven delivery drivers covering the whole province in vans which are live tracked. Customers can phone, fax or e-mail in an order using the call and collect service and pick it up from a

dedicated collection point within one hour. As part of Newey & Eyre, customers can also benefit from access to over 150 branches in Great Britain and Neweys Online – all of which offers consistent product lines and, more importantly, consistent prices. Customers can also request bespoke invoicing, meaning they receive, for example, one invoice each month rather than single invoices for each transaction. However, Dunlop & Hamilton is far from a characterless corporate machine. Personal service is paramount and each branch in Northern Ireland is standalone, giving it with the freedom to provide a more tailored product offering to meet local needs in that specific area, but with the added support of both the company head office in Belfast and the resources of both Newey & Eyre and Rexel.

Fire and security solutions delivered to luxurious Liverpool hotel development…

Another Titanic project for Atlas Fire & Security

W

hen it comes finding effective solutions for Titanic projects, then working with Atlas Fire & Security NI Ltd is plain sailing. The company has already proven itself with two Titanic projects in Belfast – the beautiful restoration of the SS Nomadic into a successful tourist attraction and the initial fire and security provision at the Titanic Drawing Offices ahead of its conversion into a boutique hotel. Now Atlas Fire & Security has added to this prestigious project list by

providing a bespoke solution for the recently opened Titanic Hotel at Liverpool’s Stanley Dock. The Titanic Hotel and Rum Warehouse Conference Centre is part of a multi-million-pound transformation of the city’s famous Stanley Docks area that has been led by Harcourt Developments – the company behind Titanic Belfast and the success of Belfast’s Titanic Quarter. Atlas Fire & Security once again team up with electrical contractor, Dublinbased Geoghegan Electrical, for this project to provide a specific fire and security package. and disability access and refuge alarms for the Titanic Hotel, providing the balance between the heritage aspects of the project and the ultra-modern look of the hotel.” As Stanley Dock is one of the six sites in Liverpool making up its UNESCO World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City listing, the heritage aspect proved a central aspect of this project. However, Atlas Fire & Security also had to take into consideration the luxury of the hotel. The success of the Titanic Hotel project highlights the partnership approach that Atlas Fire & Security is utilising for projects in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

“We have a successful partnership with Geoghegan Electrical and also the consultants for this project, Patrick McCall, based in Omagh, and we were delighted to build on that with this project in Liverpool,” added Robert. “We are about to start to work on a doctor’s surgery in Watford and also have projects in the pipeline in Dublin and across Scotland. “With so many contractors looking further afield for work, it can be reassuring for them to know that they can still rely on us to deliver the same standards they have come to expect. This highlights our commitment to expanding our services across Great Britain and Ireland in line with current market trends.”

The Atlas Group continues to grow with the recent acquisition of ARMA Fire Safety Limited. The fire risk assessment and fire awareness training company was founded by Directors Alister Rooney and Mike Anderson. Alister will remain with the company while Mike has now retired. ARMA Fire Safety Limited carries out fire risk assessments on existing buildings to ensure that employers and/or those with a degree of control over a building meet legislation that includes the Fire and rescue Services (NI) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (NI) 2010. The company can also provide accredited fire awareness training. This work is carried out in any building where staff are employed and ranges from offices and factories to churches and hotels. Alister is a qualified member of the Institute of Fire Engineers and is also an accredited Risk Assessor by Warrington Certification Ltd. He heads up a team of three fire risk assessors and one fire awareness trainer. The move sees a fourth company coming under the Atlas Group umbrella, which already includes Atlas Fire & Security NI Ltd and Atlas Energy alongside Atlas AV. Managing Director, John Nesbitt, said, “This latest expansion highlights our confidence in the marketplace and our commitment to delivering a wide range of services to our customers.”

As this leading electrical wholesaler celebrates its 40th anniversary, the Electrical Magazine looks at three of the latest projects delivered by the expert team at Walsall, Portadown…

The perfect project partners F our decades of success are testament to the ability of Walsall Portadown to continue to meet customers’ needs and with a next-day delivery service now stretching the whole of the UK and Ireland the company just keeps getting better. Walsall Portadown has become well respected for its ability to work in partnership with contractors of all sizes to provide tailored project solutions - as highlighted by the following case studies which show the company’s ability to cover commercial, industrial and exterior lighting. One of the key reasons behind this success is Walsall’s strong partnerships with major brand leaders, as Chris McConville, Manager at Walsall, explained. “We are major stockists of GE, Aurora Group, Low Carbon Lighting, Click Scolmore, Ansell Lighting, Osram and Eaton and having such a comprehensive product range allows us to provide a solution for

all scenarios presented to us by our various clients.” However, Walsall Portadown’s primary aim when delivering an LED lighting solution is to provide a product which will match the needs of the project. Chris added, “For this to work, we need to work closely with the contractor, designer and end user throughout the course of the project to find a suitable product from one of our various quality brands. “Few electrical wholesalers can boast a technical knowledge of LED which we have here at Walsall. Knowledge on the ground seems to be basic and we are making it our mission to educate the contractor against potential pitfalls. Because of this knowledge we are comfortable helping our clients by managing a project from the design stage through to completion and, ultimately, leaving a happy end user.” As energy saving is a major requirement for almost every project

and also a major talking point within every business, Walsall, Portadown can calculate and present end users with running cost comparisons to show the payback period which would be involved in the extra investment involved in LED. Chris concluded, “From a lighting design perspective, we can also provide photometric calculations to ensure that appropriate lighting levels are delivered while these savings are being made. “As this is all done locally, we can provide all this information in an unrivalled turnaround time. This can be the difference in winning and losing a contract, ultimately gaining our clients more business.” For more information on what Walsall can offer with regards to LED lighting, Click accessories, street lighting and many other products call 028 3833 5316. he combination of lighting required at Caseys EuroSpar in Crossmaglen provided a difficult challenge for the team at Walsall. Retail lighting – and food outlets, in particular – can be difficult enough to get right but with a specific design of the store, that includes clearly designated areas, combined with the need for the lighting to meet a defined aesthetic, this project was more challenging than most. For this project Walsall worked closely with two lighting manufacturers – Aurora and GE Lighting to find the right solution. “We have the ability to liaise directly with the contractor and the end user to provide a genuinely tailored solution,” explained Chris McConville, Branch Manager at Walsall, Portadown. “The beauty of working with Walsall is the fact that we aren’t tied to just one

manufacturer but can mix and match lighting to create the perfect lighting design.” For Aurora, this project highlights just how perfectly LEDs can work in a retail environment, delivering adequate lighting levels and specific filters while also providing energy saving. “We used the Movi fitting, manufactured in the UK by Microlights – which is part of the Aurora Group – and our own CrystalCool LED lamps to provide the lighting needs in each specific area,” explained Des Duignan, Aurora. “Our ability to offer product variations meant we created a consistent aesthetic while we have also been able to provide a degree of flexibility that will allow changes to be made in future.” For GE Lighting, this project displays the many positives of

These efficient lighting fixtures have a long life and deliver a remarkably efficient 104-111 lumens per watt allowing for lower maintenance and operating costs. “Any questions about the natural colour and light levels that can be delivered by LEDs are answered with the IS Series,” explained Liz Reamonn, GE Lighting. “This project has really put the Lumination™ LED Luminaires to the test and we are delighted with the final result. “We believe this product range achieves lighting levels like no other, without having to compromise on colour and lighting spread. PRM Group, Lisburn

T

he internal and external lighting requirements for an upgrade at PRM Group in Lisburn were met by a specific solution from Low Carbon Lighting and supplied by Walsall, Portadown. Low Carbon Lighting Ltd is a UK manufacturer of industrial and amenity LED lighting solutions. Building on the company’s decades of lighting experience - gained within some of the biggest names in the lighting industry - it replaced traditional energy inefficient SON and fluorescent high bays with the very latest in high performance LED technology. The luxOn Industry+ was provided with an optimised optical array, ensuring that the lighting levels were compliant with relevant legislation and light pollution was minimised. LED technology offers other advantages in addition to energy saving. The colour of the light greatly

enhances the appearance of colours. Low Carbon Lighting’s ‘neutral’ white LEDs made all the colours in the stores more vibrant, providing an improved working environment. The greatest energy savings can be achieved by turning luminaires off when light is not required. Low Carbon Lighting supplied the latest presence-sensing technology, which, together with sub-zero temperatures, allowed the client to achieve energy savings of 82% and a payback period of less than two years. The luxOn street and luxOn flood were the luminaires of choice for the external lighting upgrade. Traditional technology was replaced with Low Carbon Lighting’s latest LED technology to light staff and visitor car parks, footpaths and general yard areas. These upgrades secured an energy saving of 62% and ensured that all relevant light level requirements were met.

Henry Clark, Walsall, Portadown, explained, “It is one thing providing energy savings but it is another being able to do this while also meeting the lighting requirements of the project. Working with Low Carbon Lighting allowed us to meet both these objectives on what was a very challenging project.”

new street lighting lanterns on 5m columns, as well as over 100 new bollards that included bulkheads with motion sensors. Andy Newell, Walsall, Portadown, explained, “As with all our manufacturers we have a strong relationship with Scolmore, and this helps make it possible to deliver a quick turnaround for a project such as this. “Our focus on providing tailored solutions for projects is well known and we have once again demonstrated that expertise at Juniper Hill.” David Rankin, Scolmore’s Northern Ireland Sales Manager, added, “We enjoy a strong relationship with Walsall, built up over a number of years and we were delighted to have been working in partnership with them on this project. “Our partnership is the perfect combination of logistical expertise

and manufacturing quality, and we have proved, time after time, that it works. Time was against us for this project but we managed to deliver everything that was needed to allow the contractor to get on with the job.”

BLUESKY PENSIONS UK PROVIDES A RANGE OF WORKPLACE PENSION SERVICES TO EMPLOYERS, TRUSTEES AND CONSULTANTS ACROSS THE UK…

The non-profit auto enrolment MasterTrust

B

y law, all employers in the UK have to automatically enrol their employees into a qualifying workplace pension scheme. BlueSky administers and manages the BlueSky Pension Scheme, a non-profit arrangement, which is one of the largest MasterTrusts in the UK. Any employer is able to join this Trust-based, multiple employer, auto enrolment qualifying workplace pension scheme. No fees or commissions are paid to any party, and BlueSky welcomes any employer in the UK to benefit from its economies of scale, high levels of governance and advanced investment offering, which includes the latest in pension developments. The scheme has a governed structure, including a Trustee Board, investment consultant, independent chairman and investment strategist, who work alongside teams of administrators (all using the latest administration system and undertaking professional pensions’ qualifications). All employers in the UK must comply with Auto Enrolment legislation and have been assigned a ‘Staging Date’ (further information on staging dates can be found in the Auto Enrolment section of

the BlueSky website). To date, this has only affected the larger and medium employers, but since January 2015, it also affects employers with under 58 employees. To help guide employers through the process, the experts from BlueSky advise employers to do the following: • Nominate a contact • Know your staging date • Prepare a plan • Review pension arrangements • Check process and software • Know your workforce • Communicate with staff • Arrange a Declaration of Compliance with the Pensions Regulator. The secret to successful compliance is preparation and keeping the process simple. The key to this, according to the experts from BlueSky, is to assess payroll processes and existing pension arrangements, and to start investigations six months before your staging date. To help it all run smoothly, BlueSky has developed a complete Real Time Auto Enrolment (RAE) system, which is fully compliant. This system assesses and communicates with all employees, and

includes online opt in and out tools. The package sits alongside the administration of any arrangement (TPA, MasterTrust etc), and fees are based on the number of employees working for each employer.

CRYSTAL DRAWDOWN The requirement for members retiring from a Defined Contribution (DC) scheme to take an annuity (pension) from their fund will be relaxed from April. In light of this, BlueSky has recently launched Crystal Drawdown - the new choice for pension scheme members, replacing outdated and poor value annuity options at retirement. With the requirements for greater flexibility and the Guidance Guarantee in mind, Crystal Drawdown will be available to any employer in the UK who can participate in the Crystal Trust - a single solution, giving peace of mind that employees can benefit from a ground-breaking retirement income strategy which is designed, managed and administered by leaders in the UK pensions market. Great service, products and flexibility…

EASTERN ELECTRICAL MULLINGAR

Eastern Electrical, Mullingar - at your service!

W

hen you ask Stephen Connolly why customers keep coming back to Eastern Electrical in Mullingar his response is simple – service. It’s an old cliché but when you visit the branch it is one that is quite clearly put into action at this busy branch. “Every business will say they have an excellent service but it is something engrained in our team here and it is central to everything we do,” explained Stephen, Manager at Eastern Electrical, Mullingar. “We don’t make false promises but instead are upfront about what we can provide and offer our customers. “There’s nothing more annoying from a customer’s perspective than

being told they can get the product they need only to be let down at the last minute. Every order is valuable to us and every customer is important, so we want to provide them with a positive and professional service right from their first point of contact.” He added, “People deal with people and in such a competitive marketplace there’s very little difference to be found on price, so it is service that will make you stand out.” That service mantra is the central cog in the wheel of the Mulingar operation but it isn’t the only positive about working with this branch. Eastern Electrical Mullingar also boasts a comprehensive offering of high quality and cost-effective

products from the world’s marketleading manufacturers. “We only offer quality branded products,” added Stephen. “We have a large stockholding at the branch and great relationships with manufacturers to provide customers with the latest innovations to ensure they remain at the cutting edge of the industry.”

Experienced and expert staff make all the difference…

EASTERN ELECTRICAL MULLINGAR

Stephen Connolly, Manager at Eastern Electrical, Mullingar, (second left) with Cathy Keenaghan, David Maleady and Cyril Gillivan.

Team ethic pays off

T

he success of Eastern Electrical, Mullingar can be attributed to the collective expertise of the five-strong team. Both David Maleady and Cyril Gillivan – who you will find manning the trade counter - have over 20 years’ experience each while Manager, Stephen Connolly, has clocked up over 12 years in the industry – including a number of years working in the Middle East. The two latest recruits are van driver Mark Birmingham and, in accounts, Cathy Keeneghan. The company is currently planning to expand this team further to build on the success of the branch. While industry experience is a

central aspect to meeting customer needs, that has to be combined with product knowledge – an area that is highly regarded at Eastern Electrical. “Part of the service we offer is to keep our customers up-to-date with the latest advances in technology,” explained Stephen. “We have superb relationships with the manufacturers we represent and never turn down an opportunity to receive training on new products. “It’s not always about cost, but providing the customer with choices. That can be in the form of an alternative product that they haven’t come across before or a new line that provides different benefits. “With contractors facing so much

pressure on time, there’s a real focus on labour-saving techniques and that is an area that we have been able to advise our customers on. “Customers respect the fact that you are taking the time to explain the benefits and advantages of a certain product to them in a bid to help them. It’s that type of service that ensures they will come back.”

astern Electrical, Mullingar continues to confidently look ahead, with customers benefitting from access to a comprehensive range of products. That product range is constantly changing, as the company works hard to meet the needs of an everchanging market. Customers – regardless of their size – reap the benefits of Eastern Electrical’s strong relationships with market-leading suppliers, not only in terms of competitive prices but access to training and up-to-date i nformation on new products. With so many competitors nearby, having the latest products in stock is key to success but Eastern Electrical, Mullingar places the emphasis on the service the company provides, rather than trying to match competitors. “You won’t overtake your competitors by walking in their shadow,” said Manager, Stephen Connolly. “Our focus will always

remain on meeting the needs of our customers and with such a comprehensive product range we are confident we can provide the products and services they require.” One of the challenges of providing such a comprehensive product offering is the fact that Eastern Electrical, Mullingar works with such a variety of customers. “We deal with contractors of all sizes and we work hard to provide them with a service that is tailored to meet their needs,” added Stephen. “We have the smaller to mediumsized contractors right up to major contractors and national industrial and commercial customers. We also have a healthy FM customer base. “If the recession taught us anything it was that you can’t afford to place an emphasis on one type of customer over the other and we are proud of our commitment to customers representing businesses of all sizes.”

Delivering for customers when and where they need it…

EASTERN ELECTRICAL MULLINGAR

Nationwide coverage to meet your needs

A

s part of EWL Electric, the Mullingar branch of Eastern Electrical enjoys the best of both worlds. Incorporating the well-known names of Edmundson EWL Electric, Irwin Electrical and Eastern Electrical, the company boasts nearly 15 locations across the Republic of Ireland while also having the ability to link into its wider UK network. However, the company’s decentralised philosophy provides each branch with the freedom to operate autonomously, meaning that Eastern Electrical, Mullingar can sufficiently react to meet the specific needs of its local customers. Originally known as Frankens Ltd, the Mullingar branch was then taken over by Eastern Electrical before becoming part of EWL Electric in 2008.

“The company has been in this area for a long time, albeit under different names,” explained Manager, Stephen Connolly. “We have been in our current location for just under 10 years now and sitting on the edge of town alongside a major network has worked well for us. “We don’t have any geographical boundaries and we have a van on the road full time making deliveries across West Meath and into Dublin as well as further afield. We also have a smaller rapid response vehicle which we can use for any emergency deliveries required on site. “If needed, we can also tap into the wider branch network of EWL Electric. In the end, it is all about the most straightforward way of

getting our products to customers when and where they need them.” Customers also benefit from the strong relationships EWL Electric has with world-class manufacturers and can even enjoy tea, coffee and fresh doughnuts when they visit the trade counter. “We offer a friendly local service from a name you know you can trust - so why not drop in and put us to the test.”

“When it comes to providing a high standard of products to our customers, working autonomously means we can also tailor our product range to meet the needs of our local customers.

Schneider Electric ushers in a contemporary and connected future with the launch of its Lisse range…

New stylish curves take wiring accessories into the home accessories category

L

isse, a new range of curved white moulded wiring accessories that combines contemporary rounded aesthetics with future proofed technology, has been launched by Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management. The range of sexy switches and sockets cater for the connected and stylish consumer by bringing together smart design, convenience and efficiency. The range simply has curves in all the right places. At a time when the £14billion home improvement market is starting to feel the effects of the housing renaissance, the new Lisse range helps to make life simpler, convenient and fun – taking the wiring accessories into the home accessories category. The range has been designed to suit consumers seeking new, original, unique home improvements. Mobiles and tablets can be charged in the two-gang shelf frame for Lisse sockets, making flicking a light switch and plugging in a tablet a seamless experience. While hook frames for keys and clip frames for photos, mean important items can be kept where they’ll be seen. The range is ideally suited for new construction and refurbishments projects. With simple installation and clever design features, Lisse benefits the whole industry, from distributors, installers to house builders and homeowners. These benefits include: • Easy plug and play LED indication - This subtle but elegant optional feature shines through the front plate moulding when additional location or power indication is needed. Installation could not be easier or more flexible, as the LED indicators are simply clipped into place via a purpose-built holding space on the back of the front plate and dedicated push terminals for cabling. This also means that installers don’t need to carry as many parts as before, and have the ability to retrofit when desired. • Stay connected with an extensive data offering - Customers can stay connected to their TVs, game consoles, computers, and sound systems with Lisse. Choose from a

full range of multimedia connectors, USB chargers and combination media plates to meet all of your needs. • Save time and space with flexible frames - 1 and 2 gang spacer frames provide the perfect solution when extra installation depth is needed, with the unique Flex outlet frame with dedicated knockout offers the flexibility you need for larger cable requirements. “Consumers are really focusing on home improvements as the housing renaissance takes hold. With the Lisse range we are immersing contemporary design with technology and efficiency to cater for the connected home,” said Kristin Hanley, Wiring Device Category Manager from Schneider Electric. “This innovative development is not just for the connected

modern consumer, it has been designed to ensure installation and distribution efficiency and provide a future proofed product for house builders. This is about offering smart solutions from the plant to the socket outlet.” Lisse has been independently tested to validate the range’s antimicrobial properties. Its urea construction means that the product range is resistant to harmful bacteria such as MRSA, E-Coli, Salmonella and Klebsiella Pneumonia, making it the ideal solution for hospitals and care homes.

Case Study – Intelligent Controls

Patrick Bradley’s radical new home that featured on Grand Designs in incorporates Hager technology.

HAGER PROVIDES CUTTING-EDGE HOME AUTOMATION SYSTEM FOR AK ELECTRICAL ON UNIQUE NEW HOUSE CONTRACT…

Grand Designs on intelligent controls

W

hen Maghera architect and farmer, Patrick Bradley, came up with a design for his own home that would be like nothing seen before, he was determined to include as many stateof-the art features as he could. For the lighting and heating systems, his key requirement was the intelligent control of all of the functions via his iPad or mobile phone. Presented with this challenge, contractor, AK Electrical, installed a system based on controls from electrical solutions and services provider, Hager. Patrick’s home, in County DerryLondonderry, was one of the projects featured on Channel 4’s ‘Grand Designs’, which profiles ambitious self-build projects. Using four 45ft steel shipping containers, he built the house by stacking them two-high in the form of a cantilevered cross, and commissioned AK Electrical to design his intelligent electrical control system.

52 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

Aaron Kearney, proprietor at AK Electrical, supplied the project through its sub-company, iControl Homes. He explained, “Initially, Patrick intended to have only automated control over the lighting system but, while this was possible, we felt that, in practical terms, it would be better to have the option of switches.

DESIGN “With the choices available from Hager, we knew that we could achieve the level of technological sophistication that Patrick wanted, together with aesthetics that would complement the visual design of the home. “The other factor was the timescale. We first looked at the project at the point when the house was ready for the first fix of electrics in July 2014. With the build schedule, we had until the end of August to complete the installation, so speed was a key factor. We also needed to be sure

that the system we specified would be simple to install as, by the time we were on site, activity was fairly hectic, with up to 35 tradesmen of various disciplines working at any one time.” The Hager system recommended by AK Electrical was the domovea building automation package. Divided into two key elements, domovea consists of a server which connects the KNX bus system onto an IP network. This is then supported by domovea visualisation software which is available across multiple operating systems, including iOS, Android and PC. It is designed to enable building owners to monitor and control their KNX building automation simply through the intuitive control of different devices, including PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet. This ticked all the right boxes as far as Patrick’s desire for automated control was concerned, but it was the additional benefit of speed of installation which secured the deal

for a radical home for AK Electrical. The design of the domovea package enabled AK Electrical to build and pre-programme the central control unit in the company’s own workshop, so that all that was needed on site was to fit the cabinet to the wall and connect the appropriate cables. As well as employing sophisticated technology, Patrick was determined to carry his vision through to the aesthetics of design when it came to interiors. Having initially decided against using any form of switches, he found that he was able to incorporate switches from the premium German-designed Berker range from Hager, without compromising the standards he had set. The switch he chose was the B.IQ, which offers up to four functional elements – temperature controller, information display, tactile sensor and timer – in a single control unit. B.IQ switches incorporating thermostats were fitted in each room,

delivering an additional benefit of providing control over five zones of heating. Patrick said, “When I first approached Aaron I had very little time, as it was at a later stage in the project than first planned. There were also constraints on the budget for the electrical installation. When I met with him to discuss my requirements he completely put my mind at rest. In relation to the specification and quality of the systems Aaron was able to provide, he really impressed me. The Berker product range is absolutely first class. It is simple and so easy to use, and really didn’t take me long to get to grips with it.” Aaron Kearney commented, “We have had a business relationship with Hager for a number of years, and I have used the domovea system myself in our own showroom, so I knew exactly what it was capable of. We always keep an eye on the new products that

Hager introduce, and having met up with the company at the KNX exhibition in Frankfurt last spring, their products were fresh in my mind. “The electrical installation was as quick and easy as Patrick wanted – it ran perfectly with no snags and was even completed ahead of schedule. He has found the control interface efficient, easy to use and extremely responsive, and it basically did everything that he had asked for.” Bruce Davies, Managing Director at Hager UK, concluded, “We are extremely proud to have a selection of our KNX products associated with such an impressive project. It reflects the quality of design that Hager stands for across every single product, from basic wiring accessories through to cutting-edge home automation systems.” T: Mervyn Knox, Area Sales Manager NI on (NI) 0796 8147 444 or (RoI) 0044 796 8147 444 E: info@hager.ie W: www.hager.ie

A LOOK AT SOME OF THE IMPORTANT ISSUES DISCUSSED AT SPARKSAFE’S NI ELECTRICAL contractors’ BUSINESS CONFERENCE…

When the winner loses!

L

ow-bid tendering is not unique to the local electrical contracting industry. An effective tendering system should draw out a bidder who has carefully worked out the break-even bid costs and then added modest margin that hopefully pips the efforts of the other bidders. The elation of winning is often short lived, and quickly suppressed by the emergence of the Dutch auctioneer. Submitting the lowest responsible price may simply not be enough. Consequently, intense pressure is applied by highly empowered buyers to induce a secondary bidding war aimed at progressively lowering the initial best price. In certain cases, the ethics of procurement appear to have lessened, triggering an often repeated scenario, whereby the winner ultimately loses. The impact, and legacy, of going in below nett cost just once too often is well documented by busy insolvency practitioners and despairing customers. The solutions are surely not found in a ‘more of the same’ approach. A brake must be applied to the present runaway race-to-the-bottom culture, if the industry is to recover profitability and re-establish its place in the modern-era construction. The sector must rally to develop and improve the business conversation

with public and private procurement organisations. Intelligent client engagement and common purpose by bona fide electrical contracting enterprises is essential. Access to Northern Ireland Assembly members and public procurement professionals is possible. If the industry is to improve productivity and become more efficient, it must do so on the basis of responsible tendering, based perhaps on a new client-approved firstpast-the-post system.

Changing Direction Around 30 contractors gathered recently for the second part of the electrical business conference at Corrs Corner. Contractors heard from Professor Rudi Klein, SEC Chairman, who spoke on the subject of ‘Overcoming barriers to getting paid’. Ulster Bank’s Chief Economist, Richard Ramsey, provided a building services tailored overview of the economy. The conference also welcomed Patsy McGlone, MLA, Chair of the All-Party Group on Construction, who shed light into the work of the committee on behalf of the sector.

The conference also returned to some of the important themes and discussions that had taken place back in the December 2014 ‘Let’s Talk’ event. Three areas have been identified whereby a change of direction might be possible. The first requires an ambitious turn by the industry from the Dutch auction merrygo-round. Most electrical contractors are pressed and drawn into a win/lose relationship during the final leg of the procurement process. The remedy will almost certainly require the help and support of the local assembly and the public sector procurement professional. A further turn is also required away from the over-dependency on false self-employed labour. This issue is close to becoming the elephant in the room, with most contractors re-validating underlying concerns about its current and future impact on the industry. The final change of direction must be about contract retention deduction. Although good work is underway by others, local contractors must continue to accrue and document their trading story difficulties in order to influence the momentum for change.

False self employment warning

W

e won’t be beaten on price, lowest price guaranteed. This is the mantra that lies behind the business rationale of many labour-only gangs and umbrella organisations that have spurred on the race to the bottom. The fuel for this engine is bogus or false selfemployment. Pressure to shrink the standing PAYE workforce has been a strategy, and perhaps a necessity, for many contractors during the past decade. Others have been able to retain a core of directly employed labour, subsidising the fulfilment of contract demands by sub-letting work packages to sub-contractors. The practice of sub-letting work to others may bring about some moral and potential legal difficulties for those in the supply chain. The premise of sub-letting work is usually to shift some of the risk, by reducing the cost of directly performing part or the entire contract onto a third party sub-contractor. Primary electrical contractors who adopt this entirely legitimate practice, do so for sound commercial reasons. However, there is often a price to pay for those who are further down the supply chain. This usually means that workers are paid a much lower

self-employed hourly rate, are required to work longer hours, and remain excluded from the security of the PAYE system. The treatment of apprentices and the approach to training is often at a much lower level, in terms of welfare and planning. Primary electrical contractors may be unaware or even indifferent to these implications. However, the serious problem of false self-employment is flourishing within the practice of sub-letting. The electrical contractors who have attended the recent electrical business conferences have identified two of these problems. First, is a latent HMRC threat of Employer’s National Insurance claw-back and fines. The second problem is considered more immediate. - the quality and standard of the supply chain has declined, through lack of investment in training, poor quality workmanship and an over-dependence on pet subcontractors who are obliged to meet low costs via low, false self-employed rates. The issue of false selfemployment is on the agenda. The Unite Union, HMRC, and others are signalling to the industry that it may time for the industry to get its house in order.

Getting ahead of the game Member profile – AA Electrical Services

O

ne of the latest to apply for, and be awarded, their SparkSafe licence is Ballymena electrical contractor, James Anderson of AA Electrical Services. A well-established, NICEIC approved contractor, James is already committed to providing a professional service, maintaining the highest quality of work, and feels that being SparkSafe licensed will help to give him even more of an edge over the competition. “As well as needing it for public sector work, it is a good thing to have when tendering for other jobs,” said James. “And, at the end of the day, the SparkSafe Licence has to be a good thing for the industry as a whole. It will help to ensure that electrical work is done competently, by properly qualified electricians, and that cowboy workers will be done away with. It will also help give peace of mind when it comes to health and safety issues. “I found the application process simple and hopefully it’s something that will benefit everybody.”

Why no plastic card?

S

ome in the industry have called for a plastic SparkSafe card, suggesting that this would provide a sense of value-for-money, and improve the perceived worth of the licence to the holder. During the development process of the Licence to Practice concept, the view was taken that a control system that included a plastic card would confuse the client and undermine the online solution. The fact is that few employers or client organisations look for a plastic card to evidence electrical competency. The rationale behind the unique online solution was to design a system that would connect the identity of the electrical worker online, by licence type to specific projects, via their employer and, subsequently, via the main contractor to the client. Since February 2014, electrical sub-contract work on selected projects is awarded based in part upon the quality and standard of the contractor’s direct and indirect workforce. To achieve and maintain the appropriate level of scrutiny by the use of a plastic card is deemed to be unrealistic. The online solution provides the client and the contracted parties, including the worker, with 24/7 access to a system that facilitates visibility, transferability, and simplicity. Furthermore, the SparkSafe system informs the client and imposes compliance upon the supply chain to employ licenced electrical installation workers.

cables & cable accessories OUR REGULAR LOOK AT THE NEWS AND ISSUES AFFECTING THE CABLES AND CABLE ACCESSORIES SECTOR…

UKAS awards BASEC ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation

Wiring regulation amendment makes change to cable fixing best practice The 17th edition of Wiring Regulations sees amendments to BS 7671, the national standard in the United Kingdom for low-voltage electrical installations. One of the changes includes ensuring all cable installations in escape routes are fixed with fire-resistant components to improve fire safety of the occupants and fire fighters. Previously, it was not required for cables to be secured with fireresistant fixings, except in the case of some emergency systems where the relevant ‘code of practice’ stipulated circuit integrity in the event of fire. BS7671: 2008 - Amendment 3 understands that it is not just the risk

of failing fire safety systems that are hazardous, but that falling cable itself presents a risk. Prysmian’s FP website has a series of guidance documents, which include suitable fixing advice for fire-performance cables. These same guides can be referenced for the new amendment requirements for fixing of non-fire resistant cables within escape routes.Guidance documents to these British standards are available for download from www.fpcables.co.uk/ supporting_documents.html T: (NI) 023 8029 5029 or (RoI) 0044 23 8029 5029 E: cables.marketing.uk@prysmian.com W: uk.prysmiangroup.com

The British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) has extended its United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accreditations to include ISO/IEC 17025:2005, an international standard that specifies the competence and quality management system requirements for laboratories that provide testing and calibration services. ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation is one of the highest levels of recognised quality any testing or calibration laboratory can attain. BASEC’s scope of accreditation to 17025 includes its electrical, mechanical, chemical and fire/smoke tests on cables; further test categories will be added over time. The Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) is questioning importer and distributor awareness of changes under the revision of the Low Voltage Directive (LVD). The Low Voltage Directive (originally 73/23/ EEC, and later 2006/95/EC) is the oldest of the New Approach Directives (NAD) adopted by the European Union to support the Single Market. It provides common broad objectives for electrical safety regulations, and covers all electrical equipment and components

designed for use with a voltage rating of between 50 and 1000 V for alternating current, and between 75 and 1500 V for direct current. Published last year, the revised LVD (2014/35/EU) is due to be fully enforced at national level in April 2016. After a UK public consultation later this year, it will be released as a revision of the Electrical Equipment Safety Regulations. The Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) is reporting more trouble in the Australian electrical supply chain as a new product recall has resulted in the demise of another cable importer. The collapse of Ecables Pty Ltd may leave contractors and building owners having to fund the removal of dangerous cabling products themselves. So concerned is Master Electricians Australia (the country’s equivalent to the ECA) that it is calling for urgent reform of electrical product safety certification. A spokesperson for the ACI said, “This is an issue that we are following very closely in the UK. We recently questioned UK distributors’ and importers’ awareness of their responsibilities under the revised Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU). The recently recast directive highlights clear responsibilities and we want to make sure that those in the cable supply chain are fully aware of what they need to be doing to ensure compliance. It’s also important for UK contractors to be more watchful in their purchasing decisions. These are valuable messages for UK contractors to take note of.” T: (NI) 0208 946 6978 or (RoI) or 0208 946 6978 E: info@aci.org.uk W: www.aci.org.uk

COPPER MARKET REMAINS UNPREDICTABLE…

Clynder Cables offers fast response in a changing market

T

he LME (London Metal Exchange) copper price remained fairly stable throughout the second half of 2014. However, from the start of December 2014 to end of January 2015, there was a significant drop in the copper price of approximately £400 a tonne over the course over these two months. “There has been a downward shift in commodity prices in general, including the price of oil, which has had a knock-on effect on other sectors,” commented Oliver Hingston, General Manager, Clynder Cables Ltd. Clynder Cables responds to these changes in the market by passing on savings to customers as soon as those changes have worked their way through the European copper rod mills and into the cable company’s stock of finished product. “We are able to respond to shifts in copper price more quickly than our competitors, mainly because all of our cables are British

manufactured, made on site in Manchester,” explained Oliver. “Clynder’s turnaround on cable from the moment of materials’ purchase through to the manufactured end product is roughly four to six weeks, whereas the majority of competitors in our market are importing distributors, where import lead times can range from eight to ten weeks or longer, as cable is shipped in from southern Europe, India and the Far East. “At Clynder Cables, shorter lead times lead to increased flexibility and turnaround, offering customers a more responsive service tailored to their requirements, and lower the risk on serious fluctuations in the copper market. As well as this, customers enjoy the benefits of quality UK-manufactured cables which do not vary from one batch to the next.” Oliver continued, “The future of the copper

market remains highly unpredictable and gambling on copper market fluctuations is a very risky strategy. Uncertainties over the Euro, Ukraine, the Middle East, and the UK general election are all adding to unpredictability in both commodity prices and the ongoing requirements of end users.” T: (NI) 0161 629 9333 or (RoI) 0044 161 629 9333 E: sales@clyndercables.co.uk W: www.clyndercables.co.uk

SOLAR PV CABLING

TOO LITTLE ATTENTION IS BEING PAID TO CABLE PROTECTION IN SOLAR PV INSTALLATIONS, WARNS TIM CREEDON, SALES AND MARKETING DIRECTOR AT FLEXICON LTD…

Play it safe with solar PV cabling

M

ost PV installations are expected to last at least 25 years, so a great deal of care is taken when selecting the major components for solar PV, such as the PV panels, inverters and circuit protection. Sadly, cable protection is often an afterthought, and this is big mistake. Cable damage and degradation can affect the long-term viability of an installation and have serious safety issues. All of this could leave the specifier and installer liable for future maintenance, plus fines for lost revenue due to the installation’s downtime. Solar PV installations are by their nature outside, which means that the cabling is potentially exposed to extremely harsh environmental conditions. As an installer, you can protect individual cables on land or building-based installations, to some extent, by securing them to the underside of panels or the mounting frames and ensuring that they are individually isolated in a DC combiner box. There are, however, a number of areas where you need to group cables together, where you need an alternative to tie wrapping and also areas where it is

not sheltered. For these areas a carefully specified conduit system will provide extra protection. A cheap option is a false economy because it will fail, leading to disruption and downtime.

UV PROTECTION Over time ultraviolet light will degrade plastic materials such as the insulation on cables or on the conduit protecting them. This will result in lower impact strength, less flexibility and possible cracking and a lower fatigue life. You only need to look at the emphasis cable manufacturers place on the UV performance of solar cables to realise this, and the same care needs to be taken when specifying flexible conduit. We would always recommend using a black product, as the carbon black additive inside the material will protect against UV. For peace of mind, ask the manufacturer for independent test reports demonstrating the product’s UV resistance. Exposure to water is another hazard, so you need to consider the IP rating of any system and make sure that you use the appropriate fittings.

“It pays to seek technical advice from a manufacturer that you can trust.”

The installation will also face extremes of temperature, from below freezing in the winter to high temperatures in the summer. This causes materials to age more quickly and also causes them to expand and contract, potentially leading to the build-up of condensation. Many materials are also more brittle at colder temperatures, leaving them more vulnerable during impact. Other hazards due to the climate may include wind, dust, lightening and, for coastal installations, the corrosive effects of salt-water spray on metallic components. The location of a PV installation will also introduce other potential hazards. A risk analysis for a solar farm on land will reveal that cables need protecting from site maintenance such as strimmers, from grazing animals and also from vermin attack. Cable theft in remote locations is another factor. Selecting the most suitable conduit system for long-term external installations requires a thorough risk assessment. Get it right and you will prolong the life of the cabling and, even more importantly, protect people from electric shock. When so much is at stake, it pays to seek technical advice from a manufacturer that you can trust. Cheaper alternatives, whether imported or not, may seem commercially attractive but you need to select a system that will withstand a wide range of hazards to ensure prolonged cable life, and look for guarantees of performance from a manufacturer who can support any claims.

TIME CONTROL SYSTEMS

ANDY DOUGLAS, MANAGING DIRECTOR, TIMEGUARD LTD LOOKS AT THE DEVELOPMENTS IN TIME CONTROL SYSTEMS…

There’s a time for everything… A ncient wisdom and the Bible tell us there’s a time for everything, and there’s no doubt that ever more precise timing is entering every sphere of our 21st Century lives. These days, of course, one of the main drivers of our quest for control is to save energy, and one of the best ways to help your customers achieve savings is to provide controls that are easy to use, so they can reap maximum benefit, and also to help them identify more devices and appliances that can be timed for greater efficiency. Time control is of course at the heart of the Timeguard range – the clue is clearly in the name that we chose when we became independent from our original partner company, Smiths Industries, back in 1994. Theben AG is now our parent company, giving us the benefit of access to the wider European market. However, we are still based in North London, where our

manufacturing and distribution centre is located in Cricklewood. The Theben patent on the original plug-in time switches had expired in 1993, and new competitors quickly entered the market in droves. Our response was to continue to compete in this market on quality and service, rather than bucket-shop pricing, and to diversify with new innovations. New concepts and products have been a regular, featured in every Timeguard catalogue since then – and this April’s edition is no exception. As a business, we invested into new products, upgraded our London manufacturing from old style production lines to more modern cellular manufacturing, and we introduced worldclass quality management practices. Over the past 15 years, Timeguard has continued to invest in new products, but with increased focus on installer-based

products for professional installation. Our watchwords are time, light, safety and climate – but time control is the bedrock of our business.

CORE RANGES We still market the original plug-in and immersion time switches, but now also sell a wide range of DIN rail time controls (manufactured by our parent company) for this growing market sector. More recently, the UK company I head has launched NTT controls, a new range of time switches for installers, into which we have built new-generation componentry, to deliver easier control for end users, including superb large-screen displays. Economic facts of life mean that these are manufactured in China but, here too, we have maintained a Timeguard edge, applying the same quality management standards as at our home base. We believe

TIME CONTROL SYSTEMS

that we have a duty of care to maintain a close watch on the production process and we have invested time and energy into developing long-standing working relationships with offshore factories. Typically we own the tooling, the designs, the IP and the trademarks covering our products and, as such, we enjoy the benefits that this brings. In addition, we have also chosen to employ a Timeguard engineer in China directly, and our Londonbased senior design engineer is always present in person to see the first units off the production line.

CHOICES As we’ve developed our technical design edge with time control, it has made sense to see how we can apply it to other control needs, and our sales figures tell us we’ve made the right choices. Combining time controllers within the

weather-proof casings of our outdoor sockets was the result of some lateral thinking in our design office. It made perfect sense, given the increased tendency to use outdoor lighting, heating and BBQs. No-one wants to leave them switched on and guzzling energy for longer than needed. We’ve also got light switches with integral electronic timers, and combining time control with a room thermostat was another idea that made perfect sense. The resulting Digital Room Thermostat complements our range of heating programmers perfectly. The key skill is in engineering these combinations to fit neatly into standard single gang back boxes, and the latest design coup has been to add timing functions to the ubiquitous fused connection units. Installers are now choosing these over basic FCUs for water and space heating.

“Timeguard has continued to invest in new products, but with increased focus on installer-based products.” Of course, we’ve all been aware of electronic time control for many years now, but early generations were quite complicated to programme, which put some people off. By taking advantage of new developments and componentry, Timeguard has made time control both easy to use and easy to install - clearly a great combination for installers and users alike. The adjustable time lag function controls the time that must elapse with no further movement detected before switching to the lower light level. An ‘inhibit on’ photocell prevents lights from switching on when an area is entered with plenty of ambient light. DANLERS’ range of ‘Step Down’ Illuminance controls includes flush mounted versions for false or plasterboard ceilings, a surface mounted version for solid ceilings and an IP66 rated surface mounted version. The ‘Step Down’ range is UK manufactured and is backed with a five-year warranty. T: (NI) 01249 443377 or (RoI) 0044 1249 443377 E:sales@danlers.co.uk W: www.danlers.co.uk

make the building as cost-efficient to run as possible. The use of the Inceptor low-energy LED downlights will play a vital role in reducing costs, due to their energy efficiency and 30,000 hour LED lifetime. Inceptor Micro is a fire-rated, integrated LED downlight with a high-powered, compact, pre-wired driver and flow connector. The compact size of the driver means it can be fitted into a very shallow recess depth of just 50mm – making it among the most flexible fittings currently available. The Inceptor Micro comes with a choice of fixed and adjustable bezels. Scolmore has integrated its popular Flow Connectors into the product, which will make it quick and easy to install, as well as to remove and replace for the purpose of circuit testing and for retrofits. The fitting is IP44 rated when using the fixed bezel option. The South West MS Centre has been established for 32 years in the Grade II listed building and provides vital support and assistance to people from across Devon and Somerset who are living with MS and other chronic conditions. The Inceptor Micro downlights have been installed in all areas of the building, which houses a number of therapy rooms, providing a range of therapies including hyperbaric oxygen, electro-magnetic treatment and physiotherapy. NEIL SALT, AURORA’S CHIEF PRODUCT AND MARKETING OFFICER, OUTLINES THE REVENUE GENERATION OPPORTUNITIES AWAITING THE IT SAVVY LIGHTING CONTRACTOR…

M2M, IoT, IoE and the cloud why should you care?

Y

ou’ve probably heard the acronyms M2M (Machine to Machine), IoT (Internet of Things) or IoE (Internet of Everything – the latest trendy word for the IoT!), but what does it all really mean and how is it relevant to lighting? Let’s start with a basic ‘101’of M2M and how the IoT/IoE has evolved from it. M2M is ‘things’ of a similar type talking to each other, predominantly in a local environment. A good example of this is the Oyster card system employed in London Underground, or machines in a factory reporting back on their performance for operational efficiency and production data. The IoT or IoE is about connecting a multitude of different ‘things’ together and getting them to communicate via the internet across multiple applications, with new revenue opportunities. Unconstrained by physical location or device type, this allows remote control and reporting and for one device to trigger an action or event on another device. For example, your lights could include motion sensors that detect when no one is in the house and then turn your Hive or Nest thermostat down and send a text if someone has broken it. So how does the ‘cloud’ play a part in all this? In the IoT world, the cloud refers to the off-site servers that hold all the data that is collected and analysed. Lighting is the most pervasive, ubiquitous element in any environment. With more luminaires than any other device, it’s the ‘Trojan horse’ into the IoT. If lighting is to play its rightful part at the epicentre of a smart, connected environment, four core components are required in a successful ecosystem - we call this revolution ‘Lighting 3.0’ 1. Luminaire and sensors – The networked endpoint that provides illumination and sends data from inbuilt sensors and energy usage. 2. Communications – Modules and hubs that take the data from the luminaire to the cloud. 3. Cloud infrastructure – Servers that store and crunch the data to provide energy-saving

“A cost-effective, easy-to-install ecosystem deployed on a mass scale will transform how lighting is designed, sold, installed and monetised.” suggestions, control and interoperability with other systems. 4. Operating system – The software that overlays the ecosystem and provides a control interface and visible access to the data. A cost-effective, easy-to-install ecosystem deployed on a mass scale will transform how lighting is designed, sold, installed and monetised. The value is shifting from hardware to software and from products to services. Contractors will become systems integrators who connect devices and provide value-added services and benefits, ultimately creating new revenue-generating opportunities. This isn’t fiction - this is happening now across a multitude of industries, and lighting is next. Aurora is at the forefront of this revolution with its driverless LED light engines. This technology opens the door to direct digital communication between the cloud and every individual luminaire. Follow the progress of our AOne Control Solution

Lighting upgrade at car showroom meets specific lighting guidelines set by Vauxhall and delivers energy savings…

Hilclare Lighting moves into the fast lane

H

ilclare Lighting moved into the fast lane by providing an energy saving lighting upgrade for a leading Vauxhall dealership in Enniskillen. The lighting manufacturer was contacted by electrical wholesalers, Century Electrical, Enniskillen, about the project at Loughside Motors and provided lighting and energy calculations as well as a range of solutions for both the internal and external lighting. “The challenge regarding the lighting in both the car showroom and the external car sales area was that we had to match specific protocol and guidelines set by Vauxhall,” explained Steven McMurray, Northern Ireland Project Engineer for Hilclare Lighting. “However, our ability to provide tailored solutions places us in the perfect position to meet even the most specific

requirements and we are delighted to be able to deliver this for Loughside Motors.” One of the bespoke solutions included was the Lindo Retail and Display Recessed LED light, which was specifically made for this project using Tridonic SLE 4,000 Lumen LEDs. A range of recessed 40degree beam LED adjustable downlight luminaires, the Hilclare Lindo perfectly met the specific 1,100 LUX levels required within the car showroom. Constructed from a round, white painted die-cast aluminium twistand-lock bezel and high purity aluminium reflector, the range comes complete with a 500mm supply lead as standard. The Lindo range of luminaires is also designed and manufactured to meet the requirements of BSEN 60598 2-1. Externally, Hilclare’s Coruna LED 100w floodlights replaced the inefficient

metal halides to provide a more effective and efficient solution. A range of IP65 LED floodlights, the Coruna has an asymmetric optical system which can help reduce both light pollution (sky glow) and light trespass. This range is constructed from high purity aluminium casing and a satin aluminium reflector, complete with frosted tempered glass cover. In addition to meeting the specific lighting guidelines set by Vauxhall, Hilclare Lighting has also helped to reduce the energy costs of the showroom. “Car showrooms traditionally have their lights on extensively, which can lead to big electricity costs,” added Steven. “We were able to reduce this significantly and provide the client with a complete calculation on the savings that can be delivered by switching to Hilclare LEDs.”

STAND 22

THE LAST FEW YEARS HAVE BEEN TOUGH FOR ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS, BUT RECENTLY THERE’S BEEN GOOD NEWS, SAYS SIMON WOOD OF MEGGeR…

Happier days are here again!

T

he Irish economy is growing and wages are at last rising faster than prices, which means that people are going to have more spending money in their pockets. As an added bonus, just around the corner are the warm days of summer to tempt us out of our houses (well, fingers crossed for that last one). Why should this put smiles on the faces of electrical contractors? The answer is that it’s going to be easier for them to find profitable business. With the general public feeling better off, they will increase their spending on events like fairs, fetes and concerts. You can be sure that, in response, many more events will be organised. That’s excellent news for contractors, because every event involves electrical equipment, and that equipment will require testing - and testing means profit. When testing temporary and mobile installations, most of the work is the same as that needed when testing fixed installations. There is, however, one important addition. In terms of earthing arrangements, temporary installations are often TT systems with their own local earth electrode. The resistance of this electrode must be measured to check that it’s low enough to ensure the safety of the installation. Contractors can, of course, buy dedicated earth electrode resistance testers, but a more convenient and cost-effective option for many of them is a multifunction installation tester, such as a Megger MFT1730 or MFT1735, which can measure earth electrode resistance, as well as carry out all of the other tests on installations required by the ETCI

Simon Wood.

“The MFT1735 adds a host of additional earth-testing techniques.”

and IET Wiring Regulations. With these instruments, the only extras needed for earth electrode testing are inexpensive earth stakes. With the MFT1730, earth electrode resistance is measured using the dependable and well-proven threepole method, which is suitable for the vast majority of applications. The MFT1735 adds a host of additional earth-testing techniques, giving test options on even the most complex earthing systems. When thinking about opportunities at events, contractors should remember that it’s not just the installation that will need testing – there will also be a large number of appliances and other assets that need PAT testing. A fairground or a festival site may, however, not be the ideal location for using a high end, high productivity PAT tester. A better choice is likely to be one of the compact, inexpensive and easy-to-use instruments from the new Megger PAT100 range. The PAT120, for example, provides everything needed to carry out tests on the vast majority of portable appliances, but it doesn’t even need to be connected to a mains supply. It has pre-programmed test groups with fixed pass/fail limits for testing Class I and Class II appliances, as well as extension and power leads. It offers insulation testing at 500V by default, and also has a 250V option

for testing IT and surge-protected equipment. For contractors who want even more flexibility, the PAT150 adds extra functionality, including the option to carry out separate tests for continuity, insulation, leakage, SELV equipment and even plug mounted RCDs. We’ve all had enough of winter and wintery economic conditions, so now that the sun’s starting to shine again, let’s make the most of it. For contractors, the numerous events and festivals that this summer will undoubtedly bring can be excellent business opportunities – provided, of course, that you have right test equipment! IRC’s calibration and repair service provides customers with the confidence that their test equipment is being dealt with in a totally professional maNnEr…

First-class calibration from IRC

Thermal Imaging course

nstrument Repairs and Calibration (IRC) Ltd offers a first class calibration and repair service. While the company is well-established, it is a new name to many in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. However, IRC has made a swift impact on both sides of the border thanks to the high level of service delivered. And a closer look at what the company has to offer highlights the unrivalled standards IRC consistently delivers. The company’s custom-built laboratories are fully equipped with high accuracy, traceable standards and run by a highly experienced team of engineers. One of the company’s laboratories in Scotland, Lab No 4688, is a UKAS accredited laboratory. This allows customers using IRC’s calibration and repair service additional confidence that their test equipment is being dealt with in a totally professional manner, with the added bonus of a direct point of contact available at all times to quickly respond to any queries. In addition, the workshop is capable of efficiently meeting the instrumentation repair and calibration requirements of a broad range of test equipment types, while the company also offers a wide range of test equipment to hire and acts as a main distributor for most major manufacturers.

IRC continues to offer a thermal imaging course to meet the demand within this lucrative sector. Thermal imaging is growing in importance within the trade, with more and more companies offering this service to their customers. Thermal imaging is a reliable, non-contact method of scanning electrical equipment to quickly and accurately find faults but to carry it out requires proper training. IRC runs courses throughout the year and those interested can find out more by speaking to the company’s Sales Manager, Frank Silo, on (NI) 028 9083 7300 or (RoI) 048 9083 7300. You can also e-mail Frank for more details on belfast@instrument-repairs.com

I

IRC is also the only company in Northern Ireland to offer thermal imaging training as well as actually selling the necessary equipment and having the capabilities to carry out thermal imaging surveys. This means the company is the perfect thermal imaging partner. For those who want to carry out thermal imaging, IRC offers certified training while those already qualified can ensure their equipment is up to date by purchasing the latest cameras from the company. However, another major attraction of working with IRC is that the company can carry out thermal imaging surveys on an electrical contractor’s behalf. Heading up the team in Ireland is Sales Manager, Frank Silo, who is a well-known face within the industry. Frank has over 27 years’ experience in the testing and measurement sector and says he isn’t surprised at the success IRC is enjoying in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. “We are proud of our reputation for a first class service and that is something we work hard to maintain,” explained Frank. “Our facilities are second to none and we back this up with superb service levels. “In addition to this, the relationship we have with all the main manufacturers is fantastic, so whether a contractor needs to purchase

NEW CRIMP TECHNOLOGY HELPS ELIMINATE CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME FOR THOSE WORKING IN THE ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY…

Klauke’s ‘Micro’ solution to RSI from crimping

W

ith an increasing number of cases of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) being reported in the electrical industry, the new Klauke Micro tool is a welcome addition to any tool box. Many cable crimping applications throughout the industry are conducted using manual ratchet tools or hand hydraulic tools and, depending on the number of operations conducted each day and the hand force required to close the handles of the tool, Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) can result. Statistics show that 29% of repetitive strain injuries will result in CTS, a condition where the median nerve in the wrist is squashed in the carpal tunnel, creating chronic pain, pins and needles, and numbness in the fingers and hand of the operator. In the worst cases, CTS can only be resolved with surgery, one hand at a time, resulting in employees being unable to work for 6-8 weeks.

However, a new alternative to manual ratchet crimping tools for high-volume, high-force applications is now available. The Klauke Micro is an electro-mechanical tool suitable for pre-insulated connectors (up to 16mm²), boot-lace ferrules (up to 50mm²), and Cu tube lugs (up to 25mm²). The Micro provides a 90% reduction in hand load experienced by the operator to help keep employees safe and maintain high productivity. The Micro is less than 1kg and completes in excess of 300 crimps per charge in less than 1.5 seconds per crimp. As an intelligent tool, it ensures full closure of the jaws on every crimp and comes with the ability to link to Klauke iPress software, where quality records can be downloaded and stored for improved traceability. The JIB raises concerns over the suitability of existing meter tails that need to be checked during a periodic inspection…

Check meter tails in existing service heads

A

round 1980, domestic and similar service heads usually contained either 63 or 80 amp cut-out fuses. During the 1990s, the use of 100 amp cut-out fuses became more common for a large proportion of new service heads. It is now the normal service supplied for new installations. For new supplies, the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) would usually require service heads with 100 amp cut-out fuses to be provided with 25mmsq-sized meter tails. For older installations, when carrying out either Electrical Installation Condition Reports, or perhaps an addition or alteration, a different approach to the required size of meter tails may need to be considered, according to the experts from the JIB (Joint Industry Board for the electrical contracting industry). The prime reasoning for carrying out an Electrical Installation Condition Report is to establish if the existing installation is in a safe condition for continued operation – not whether it meets the most recent requirements from the latest edition of regulations. 16mmsq tails will often be encountered when an Electrical Installation Condition Report is carried out on an older property.

84 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

CODING

“The prime reasoning for carrying out an Electrical Installation Condition Report is to establish if the existing installation is in a safe condition for continued operation.”

It is the duty of the inspecting electrician to consider if the meter tails installed represent ‘danger present during the inspection’ or perhaps ‘danger not present during the inspection – but considered a ‘distinct probability’ – raising either a Code C1 or C2 coding, respectively. If there is no evidence or suspected danger present, but merely the inspecting electrician knows categorically that such new work would usually require 25mmsq meter tails, the only applicable coding may be a C3 under the Electrical Installation Condition Report regime. Such a ‘C3’ coding, in the absence of any C1 or C2 code findings, can enable installations to be considered ‘satisfactory’ for further service. For installations undergoing upgrading, additions or rewiring, as with new build installations, an initial enquiry should be made to the Distribution Network Operator – to establish if there is a requirement for a set of tails of a minimum rating, such as 25mmsq. This would be advisable if it is likely that the Distribution Network

Operator is to be involved later in the project – perhaps due to a metering change, metering relocation, service head replacement, etc. In the absence of any such guidance, the requirements of BS7671:2008 must be considered. The regulations require any such existing equipment (such as meter tails) that will be supporting the altered work, to be ‘adequate’ to do so. This will mean that the rating of the tails from a current capacity viewpoint should be considered – both during overload conditions and separately under fault conditions. Note that this alone does not necessarily involve the automatic upgrade to 25mmsq tails. BS7671:2008 can in some cases be satisfied, where cables are protected against overload currents by protective devices at the end of a cable (such as MCBs or fuses in a consumer unit), provided that the cable itself can adequately withstand fault currents by an upstream device (such as the cut-out fuse). In all cases, a working knowledge of the wiring regulations is needed for the design, verification and subsequent inspection and test, to ensure that equipment is safe to be put into service and remain in service thoughout its life.

Tyler Hoey, ETT, presents Peadar McCoy, Peak Electric, with his latest qualification certificate.

Electrician returns to Northern Ireland to set up new company and chooses ETT to update his training…

Reversing the trend

W

hen Peadar McCoy returned to Northern Ireland after nearly a decade in Canada, one of his first tasks was to ensure his qualifications were up-to-date – and that is where ETT is helping. Peadar – Owner of Peak Electric in Newry – has been working closely with the team in Ballymena update, amongst others, his 17th Edition, his City & Guilds 2394 and 2395 and his AM2 qualifications and he is impressed with the service they have to offer. “I contacted a number of training providers but I wasn’t impressed with their knowledge – but that wasn’t the case when I spoke to ETT,” explained Peadar. “They clearly know what they are talking about and their trade experience shines through. I was able to explain what experience I had and

they advised me on the best way to bring my qualifications up-to-date. “It was a straightforward process and any future I need will be carried out with ETT, particularly now that they will be offering courses in Armagh.” As he grows his company, Peadar will also be looking to support ETT by taking on a new apprentice. “That is definitely in our plans and I am keen to be able to offer someone the opportunity to work and gain experience in this exciting industry,” he added, “Most people think being an electrician is about putting a few wires together, but it is so much more than that. There’s a lot of innovative technology out there and you have the chance to interact with people from all walks of life, so it’s far from boring.” Peadar is keen to ensure that variety

of work is something Peak Electric becomes well known for. “When working in Canada every day was different and you always had a challenge to face. You were often working in temperatures as low as -20oC and carrying out work ranging from maintenance to new projects. “When I first went to Canada the work was all about the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games and setting up the infrastructure surrounding that and since then much of the work surrounded the thriving tourist industry so I had the opportunity of maintaining hotels, the local council’s street lighting and waste water treatment plants as well as high end homes in the Whistler area. “I really enjoy the trouble-shooting aspect of the job and that is something that Peak Electric will offer. If you have a problem, we’ll solve it.”

TRAINING WORKS

What should industry expect from its training provider? • As an employer, you should expect to be consulted and provided with an opportunity to have your say when it comes to apprenticeship and skills training. It may not always be possible to meet your needs, as apprenticeship training programmes are often limited to majority viewpoints, resources and the available funding. Nevertheless, the employer should be recognised as being central to the success of any apprenticeship training programme. • Attendance and performance of an apprentice at college is something that most employers want to and should know about. So your training provider should keep you informed on a daily or weekly basis about those occasions when your apprentice is absent or routinely arriving late or leaving early. • Most employers view apprenticeship training as an investment in the development and future of their business. As with any investment, it’s important to keep an eye on how things are going. Your training provider should keep you informed with regular written feedback on how the young person is performing. You should be informed about their achievements and progression. • A good training provider should always

seek to add value to your business. In the case of apprenticeship training, the provider should provide you with a dedicated and occupationally competent person to help support your business should difficulties arise. • Are you well informed about what your apprentice is studying at college? Are you provided with resources to help you determine and understand what they have got to achieve? Most good training providers will make a scheme of work and qualification guide available to you and your apprentice.

Employer-led training partnership

T

he partnership between ETT and Belfast Metropolitan College appears to be producing the goods for the local electrical contracting industry. Employers in the greater Belfast area have clearly welcomed the return and renewal of the employer-led training partnership. Despite the stubborn economic pressure on the construction sector, employers have elected to employ and train 173 first and second-year electrical installation apprentices. The Chairman of ETT, Lewis Darragh, said, “The apprenticeship and skills training requirements for the local industry are perhaps best determined and achieved through co-operation with the industry. We have a prime example of this at Belfast Met, where the management and leadership have been inclusive in their approach towards employers.”

Ian Thompson, Course Co-ordinator at Belfast MET, passes on more of his skill and knowledge to the next generation of talented young apprentice electricians.

Belfast Met Lecturer, David Ferguson provides a demonstration on inspection and testing of electrical systems in accordance with BS7671.

5 reasons to choose ETT

NRC Foundation Degree

D

o you want to move your career to the next level? Perhaps you want to be considered for promotion or simply build on your existing technical qualifications? A foundation degree could be just the thing to make you stand out from the competition and ETT is pleased to endorse NRC’s Foundation Degree in Building Technology & Management. The course is validated by University of Ulster and is available on a full-time or part-time basis at the Coleraine/Ballymena campus. Topics include contract law, project management and contract administration, and the programme starts in September. W: www.nrc.ac.uk

D

erek Thompson, ETT Chief Executive, outlines the reasons why you should choose ETT to meet your training and apprenticeship needs:

1

We provide a good service to the industry. The ECA, JIB, Unite the union and the Education Training Inspectorate all reckon that we are good at what we do. Since 1998, we’ve worked hard on behalf of the local industry to promote the interest of electrical contractors. During the period, we have partnered with selected FE Colleges to raise standards and improve the quality of apprenticeship and other electrical training skills.

2

Our assessment, monitoring and training officer team is drawn from the local industry. We employ electricians to assess electricians. We don’t use administrative or unqualified non-occupational staff to monitor apprentices in the workplace. This means that we can assure employers, parents, and the wider industry that we are keeping an eye out for the welfare and interest of the young person.

3

We are accountable to employers and we listen carefully to what they’ve got to say. The employers that we support can rely on us to provide them with regular attendance and progress reports on their apprentice. The management, training officer and admin team are easy to contact by mobile telephone or e-mail and, if you wish, we are always happy to call at your office or workplace. ETT is overseen by a voluntary and unpaid Board of Employers made

Now offering NVQ Level 3 for mature candidates

E up of local contractors and industry representatives.

4

Our focus is on what is good for the employer. We believe in doing the right thing the right way. So we’ve stuck with the traditional electrical apprenticeship training model. Being traditional doesn’t mean that we are stuck in the past. We’ve introduced an e-portfolio and on-site assessment via tablet technology, allowing employers to remotely scrutinise their apprentices progress and achievement.

5

By choosing ETT, you will be helping the industry maintain control of the structure and standards of its own apprenticeship and skills training requirements. We have remained connected to the local and national industry for the past 17 years. During this time, we have endeavoured to build and secure the long term interests of the industry through an employer-led training ethos.

TT is now offering the new C&G 2356-99 NVQ Level 3 which has been designed by the JIB and City & Guilds. Upon completion, successful candidates can apply for a SparkSafe Qualified Electrician’s Licence and JIB Gold Card. Who is it for? - Mature candidates and experienced workers - it is not suitable for new entrants into the industry. It has been designed for those who have been working in the industry for a number of years and wish to demonstrate their technical knowledge, performance and competence to the industry standard, Level 3. How does it work? - Candidates will go through a professional interview with a specialist assessor, where their industry experience and existing qualifications will be taken into account. If they have suitable experience, an assessment programme will be developed for them, allowing them to demonstrate their knowledge. As part of the assessment programme, the candidate will sit the industry benchmark AM2 test, which is the independent assessment of occupational competence, provided by NET. Candidates will have typically completed the relevant electrotechnical theory courses, and must be able to provide sufficient evidence from site, and by witness testimony, of previous relevant work. How long does it take? - The pace of completing this qualification is down to each individual’s working circumstances and, in some cases, can be completed in as quickly as 3 months.

HAGER RESPONDS TO AMENDMENT 3 WITH ‘DESIGN’ RANGE OF METAL CONSUMER UNITS...

Hager responds to Amendment 3

I

n response to Amendment 3 to the wiring regulations, Hager UK has launched its Design Range of metal consumer units aiming to alleviate electricians’ fears that they will be more difficult to install than the preceding plastic version. Following various investigations from the London Fire Brigade, involving fires originating within plastic consumer units, it became apparent that changes relating to consumer units would be included in Amendment 3 to the Wiring Regulations. Hager started working extensively to ensure that these changes would have minimum impact on the company’s customers. The new regulations, which have now been officially released, explain that all domestic consumer units fitted in the UK from January 2016 will have to be made of a non-combustible material. Initially there was speculation that this would include plastic enclosures made from thermoplastic (960°C glow wire) material. However this is classified as ‘not readily combustible’

94 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

in the context of this regulation hence would not be compliant. Working with the London Fire Brigade, BEAMA and Electrical Safety First, Hager UK kept up to date through the various consultation stages of the process and continued its support during the development of the amendment. Additionally Hager created a comprehensive communication strategy to keep all industry professionals up-to-date with the changes. It also invested heavily into an R&D programme developing a new product range that would allow compliance with Amendment 3 and utilised the laboratory at its Telford

headquarters to ensure that these products meet all requirements. T: Mervyn Knox, Area Sales Manager NI on (NI) 0796 8147 444 or (RoI) 0044 796 8147 444 E: info@hager.ie W: www.hager.ie

rotecting the operation of critical electrical systems within data centres to prevent system downtime, and reducing power consumption to cut costs and deliver green business objectives are primary outcomes. When utilising the power quality management system developed by Bender UK. Bender’s PQM (power quality monitoring) system combines power quality and electrical safety to deliver an integrated solution for DC and AC electrical environments, which provides early warning of faults or failure for all critical aspects of the system, by continuous monitoring of the whole system. Bender systems are widely used to protect complex electrical systems in critical installations such as data centres, airports and high-value industrial processing operations, achieving maximum availability of electrical supply and reducing costly downtime to a minimum. Interference in modern power systems can be caused by frequency converters, electronic ballasts and switched-mode power supplies used in most non-linear loads, and can present in portable electronic devices including PCs, chargers, TVs, monitors etc. Data centre UPS systems can also introduce harmonic content onto the power system. This interference leads to ‘dirty power’ harmonic problems and overheating in neutral conductors, which increases the risk of potentially disastrous fires. System interaction can also cause interference in neighbouring equipment. Monitoring system quality, using Bender PQM units, can ensure high availability and a power supply free

“Monitoring system quality, using Bender PQM units, can ensure high availability and a power supply free from interference.”

from interference. The equipment can also identify when a power quality issue is due to interference or complex load, or whether the regional supplier is delivering poor power quality. The new generation gateway Comtraxx CP700 Condition Monitor is the central point where all measured data is collected, filtered and evaluated to provide a comprehensive view of energy consumption and bring transparency to a data centre’s electrical service networks, when used in conjunction with Bender Linetraxx PQM systems. Power quality monitoring is particularly effective when combined with residual current monitoring (RCM), which detects degradation in the level of insulation in an installation or component and issues a signal when the residual current exceeds a set value that can be chosen to suit the electrical application, effectively tailoring the equipment to the customer’s needs. RCMs are used primarily in facilities where a fault should result in a signal, but not in disconnection. This enables operators to detect faults and eliminate their causes before the protective devices disconnect the installation, so increasing operating safety and cutting costs. The PQM system provides comprehensive information on the status and performance of the power

system within a data centre, including line voltages, phase currents, phase conductor voltages, line voltages, active and reactive power import in kWh and kvarh, harmonic distortion, energy consumption and peak consumption, sag, swell and flicker. Importantly, it delivers that information in an intelligent and transparent way, enabling managers to get a complete picture of how the power system is performing, and identifying potential problem areas. The information can be displayed by the screens on the CP700 itself or on a PC, using existing IT infrastructure, and is not dependent on fieldbus wiring, eliminating bottlenecks caused by high volumes of data. Bender’s secure web-server based monitoring system allows remote monitoring of sites. Bender’s PQM device also acts as an energy meter, while checking the system quality, determining the energy consumption per cost centre and reducing high overhead costs. For example, it can determine how much energy is consumed by the measures taken to prevent system interaction, and will also show the effect of energy-saving measures on the quality of the electrical supply system.
