Forum offers support to women Ilse Watson THE Foreign Nation Forum of Wrenchville was established in 2010 and their duties are to partake in crime prevention activities. They give back to the community of Wrenchville and as part of the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women

and Children they donated food parcels to people in need. They commemorated five women from Wrenchville who were murdered in the past few years. The function was held last Thursday and food parcels were handed to the families of the victims. Wreaths were laid on their graves.

Kolwyntjies vir elke smaak gebak Ilse Watson MAGDA NEETHLING is die eienaar van die splinternuwe Decadent Delicacies The Cupcake Boutique wat in November in Kuruman oopgemaak het. Sy het Decadent Delicacies van Mosselbaai na Kuruman verskuif en die nuwe winkel spog met smullekker kolwyntjies, gebak van die Deeghuys af en varsgemaalde koffie te kus en te keur. “Bak en kosmaak is belangrik in my lewe. My ma sê altyd sy weet nie waar ek vandaan kom nie, want niemand anders in die familie is so lief vir bak en kosmaak soos ek nie.” The Cupcake Boutique bied genoeg kuierplek vir enige soort geleentheid en ook kinderpartytjies. “Ek gee spesiale voorskote en mini-sjefhoedjies vir die kleintjies en hulle kan in die kombuis koekies bak.“Hier kan ook spesiale high tea-partytjies gehou word en ek bak vir enige soort geleentheid,” vertel Magda. Nie net is daar meer as 50 soorte kolwyntjies beskikbaar nie, maar mense kan ook toebroodjies, slaaie of ligte maaltye bestel. Vir kinders is daar onder meer ’n kolwyntjie genaamd Bubble Gum Blast beskikbaar. Ander kolwyntjiegeure sluit in Bar One-kolwyntjies, Death by Chocolate, Red Velvet en ’n witsjokoladegeur. “Ek het geen ander tydverdrywe nie, want my kinders hou my doenig. Vir my is dit heerlik om nuwe resepte uit te dink, te bak en die gebak te versier.” Magda is met Tienie getroud en hulle het drie dogters – Charlotte (13), Cherize (10) en Skayla (2). Bedaar, moenie bang wees

More than 16 days needed SOUTH AFRICA annually observes the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children where events aimed at raising awareness, influencing behavioural change and securing high level political commitment to end gender violence are held. Unfortunately the violence against women and children is not limited to 16 days a year. It is a constant battle in a country where it is all too easy to victimize the most vulnerable in society. The rate of sexual violence in South Africa is among the highest in the world. South Africa faces a globally unprecedented problem of violence against women and children, with rates of homicide, rape as well as childhood and domestic violence far above those of other countries. The problem of violence is undermining the nation’s economic and social development. The problem is so severe that it affects people from all walks of life, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnicity, age and religion. Preventing and reducing levels of violence has been a missing piece in the national transformation agenda. It needs to be addressed vigorously as a national priority. The overall effect on the country is staggering. The most immediate impact of violence on health is seen in the country’s health facilities, where an estimated 1,75 million people annually seek health care for injuries resulting from violence. Women who have been raped are at risk of unwanted pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Over a third of them develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which, if untreated, persists in the long term and depression, suicidal tendencies and substance abuse are common. These troubling after-effects in themselves feed the cycle of abuse and neglect in a family and social dynamic. Children who have been exposed to emotional, sexual and physical violence are at an increased risk of contracting HIV, as well as suffering from depression, suicidal tendencies and even becoming substance abusers. Poverty and social inequity are key drivers of violence. Inequality in access to wealth and opportunities results in feelings of low self-esteem, which are channelled into anger and frustration. Violence is often used to gain sought-after respect and power, whether through violent robbery, rape, severe punishment of children or violence against partners. Widespread exposure of children to violence promotes anti-social

Exposure of boys to abuse, neglect or sexual violence in childhood greatly increases the chance of them being violent as adolescents and adults, and reduces their ability to form enduring emotional attachments. Widespread abuse of alcohol and drugs is another key factor. South Africa has one of the highest per capita alcohol consumption levels per drinker in the world. Many acts of violence occur after alcohol and drug abuse, especially fights, some types of homicide and rape. Many victims of violence are also rendered vulnerable by alcohol. Law enforcement in South Africa is generally very poor. Few perpetrators are effectively punished, with the result that laws fail to provide deterrence and victims often have little faith in the system. In addition to this, there has been a conspicuous lack of stewardship and leadership in the area of violence prevention from government, despite the massive problem violence poses to the country. We as South Africans of all races, creeds, religions and socio-economic backgrounds must stand together and play an active role in preventing violence against our country’s most vulnerable citizens, not just during these 16 days, but all 365 days of the year.

Bewaar dié huise Lizette Slabber DIE skemahuisies van Upington boei my al vandat ek die eerste keer hier aangeland het. Dit is ’n stukkie geskiedenis wat eie aan dié wêreld is en dit behoort beslis bewaar te word. Wanneer ek soggens van Grootdrink af dorp toe ry, is dit vir my jammer om te sien van hoeveel van dié huise nou net murasies oor is. Elke huisie was ’n tuiste vir ’n gesin; vol herinnerings van die lief en leed wat dié gesin in hul jare daar beleef het. Die skemahuise is in die 1930’s gebou om ’n uitweg vir die armblankevraagstuk te bied. Elke gesin het ’n viervertrekhuisie gekry en sewe hektaar grond. Daar was soveel kinders dat ’n hoërskool in Gariep en verskeie laerskole wat intussen toegemaak is, begin moes word. Wanneer ek verby die murasies ry, wonder ek oor die verhale wat saam met die mense verdwyn het. Dit was arm tye wat met baie swaarkry gepaardgegaan het, maar daar moes tog ook wonderlike sosiale tye gewees het: vol van saamlag en -kuier, Nagmaalbyeenkomste, vryersklonge, opsitkerse en kwajongens wat die lewe

ingekleur het. Op Leerkrans staan vier oorspronklike skemahuisies, maar die meeste van die huisies is vandag net murasies of so verbou en verbreek dat die oorspronklike struktuur skaars sigbaar is. Ek weet baie mense verbind die skemahuise net met armoede en moeilike tye en gee nie werklik om wat daarvan word nie. Maar vir my verteenwoordig dit die sukses van dié omgewing se mense. Duisende mense wat in skemahuise grootgeword het, is vandag suksesvolle professionele en sakemense. Die skemahuis is ’n simbool van vooruitgang; van mense wat uit moeilike omstandighede sukses behaal het en behoort dus bewaar en gevier te word. Dit is dalk onrealisties, maar ek sal mal wees daaroor indien mense die paar oorblywende, onveranderde skemahuisies kan restoureer en vir die nageslag bewaar sodat hulle vir mense kan wys waar hulle vandaan gekom het en wat hulle allles bereik het.

MET ons is God. Die woord Immanuel is al vir ons so oorbekend. Dit bestaan uit die samevoeging van drie woorde. Met, ons en God. In Jes. 7:1-17 en in Matt. 1:22-23 lees ons van die belofte van Immanuel. Jes. 7:14 sê: ’n Jong vrou sal swanger word en ’n seun in die wêreld bring en sy sal hom Immanuel noem. ’n Krisis staar Israel in die gesig. ’n Berig dat ’n vyand reeds in hul land kamp opgeslaan het, vervul Agas met vrees. God stuur ’n boodskapper na Agas met die woorde: “Bedaar! Bly kalm! Moenie bang wees nie. Moet jou nie ontstel oor hierdie twee stukke brandhout nie.” Agas kry boonop die vryheid om van die Here ’n teken te vra, maar hy maak nie daarvan gebruik nie. Dan kom die Here self met die Immanuel-teken. Voordat die seuntjie weet om tussen goed en kwaad te onderskei sal die twee konings wat julle vrees, vernietig wees. Die moeder sal die seuntjie Immanuel noem, omdat sy reken die gevaar is nou afgeweer. Later in Jes. 7:17-20 kom sak die Assiriërs op Israel toe. Die keer gaan daar geen uitkoms wees nie. So word Immanuel nou vir Israel ’n onheilsteken, maar tog het die seuntjie vir Israel kom leer om te glo en op God te vertrou. Matt. 1 kom leer vir ons soos God in die verlede voorsien het, sal hy ook in die volheid van die tyd reddend teenwoordig wees. Hier ontmoet Ou- en Nuwetestamentiese gelowiges mekaar deur by mekaar te leer: “Moenie bang wees nie, want kyk daar gaan ’n seun gebore word en hulle sal hom Immanuel noem, dit beteken: God met ons.” Een van die mooiste beloftes in die Woord is juis: Moenie vrees nie, moenie bang wees nie. Die engele kom sê dit vir die skaapwagters waar hulle in die nag hul skape oppas. Met die geboorte van die Jesus-kind het hy ons waarborg geword. Bedaar! Bly kalm! Moenie bang wees nie! Dis God wat met ons praat.

MENSBLOED wat van die Kuruman-hospitaal kom, vloei in die straat rondom die hospitaal. Dié bloed kan net van pasiënte af kom. Dit hou ’n groot gesondheidsrisiko vir die Kuruman-inwoners in. Die burgerregte-organisasie AfriForum het onder meer by die Groen Skerpioene ’n klag ingedien. Volgens Stefan Pieterse, AfriForum se Noord-Kaapse koördineerder, besmet die bloed die grondwater wat deur boere vir besproeiing gebruik word. Dit kan daartoe lei dat mense besmette gewasse kan inneem. “Ons as AfriForum is bereid om te betaal om die gemors skoon te maak. Op die oomblik kan ons egter niks doen nie, want ons wil nie bewyse wat in die straat lê, vernietig nie,” het Pieterse Dinsdag gesê. Pieterse het ook bygevoeg sou AfriForum die bloed en besmette gebiede skoonmaak, sal hulle die koste daarvan van die departement van gesondheid verhaal. Lulu Mxekezo, woordvoerder van die departement van gesondheid, ontken hulle by die departement weet enigiets van dié omstandighede. “Ek vermoed handskoene en ander afvalmateriaal verstop die mangat by die hospitaal en dit lei daartoe dat die mangat oorspoel.” Teen druktyd het die Groen Skerpioene reëlings met die provinsie getref om die perseel te besoek en om aksie te neem. Kelder pas wyn by Kersgeregte MET die feestyd wat wink, word die vraag gereeld gevra: Watter wyne moet vir die groot feesdae gekies word? Hierdie vraag help Orange River Cellars om een van sy voorste bates te illustreer, naamlik veelsydigheid. Met só ’n omvattende wynreeks, met sulke enorme verskeidenheid, hoef die wynliefhebber vóór, tydens en ná die Kersmaal net een wynnaam te soek, en dis Orange River Cellars. Kersoggend – darem laterig in die oggend wanneer die son al goed op is – kan een van Orange River Cellars se vonkelwyne nadergetrek word. Trek die bolkurk met ’n aanloklike “pop” en skink jou vonkelwynglas halfvol. Maak net seker die vonkelwyn is yskoud. Sit hom sommer die vorige aand al in die yskas. Die halfvol glas word nou met lemoensap opgevul en daar sit jy met die allerheerlikste manier om die feesdag in te lui. Hulle noem hierdie mengsel van sap en vonkelwyn ’n Bucks Fizz, maar hy is sommer net lekker. Teen dié tyd is die huis al met die geure van die Kersmaal deurtrek. Of dalk word daar vanjaar buite gebraai en staan die vleis, pluimvee en vis in skottels en wag om die kole te groet. Een van Orange River Cellars se witwyne sal dié lekkerte op ’n gepaste manier inwy. Die twee staatmakers is sy Chenin Blanc en Colombard. Al twee is fris, vrugtige droë witwyne, met die Colombard wat so effe voller in die mond lê. Hoe ook al, wanneer almal tafel toe skuif, behoort daar twee of drie van hierdie wyne op die tafel te wees. Voorgeregte kan wissel van ’n garnaalkelkie, vleisslaai, koue hoender of miskien sop. Maar wees verseker dat die Chenin Blanc of Colombard ’n heerlike aanvulling tot die huiskok se harde werk sal wees. Die fris, suiwer witwyne kry ook sommer jou maagsappe aan die gang wat help dat

die kos beter verteer. En een van die grootste voordele van Orange River Cellars se wyne is dat hulle van nature laag is in alkohol. Waar normale witwyne teen tussen 13%- en 14%-alkohol aangetref word, staan Orange River Cellars se wyne in die omgewing van 12%. Waaruit sal die hoofgereg vanjaar bestaan? Kalkoen, skaapboud, beestong, of miskien ’n lekker gerookte ham? Kalkoen mag ’n witvleis wees, en ja, dit sal voortreflik smaak saam een van die bogenoemde wyne. Maar moenie bang wees om te eksperimenteer en jou kalkoen te nuttig saam met ’n glasie van Orange River Cellars se Pinotage wat so effe in die yskas koudgemaak is nie. Vir die lam sal daar niks beter wees nie as een van Orange River Cellars se klassieke rooiwyne nie – Cabernet Sauvignon of Shiraz. Die sagte vrug en volrondheid van hierdie twee staatmakers sal behoorlik reg laat geskied aan die harde werk wat die kok gedoen het om hierdie meesterstuk na die tafel te bring. Ham en beestong sit met ’n speserygeur danksy die naeltjies wat tradisioneel in die ham is, en die tong se mosterdsousie. Wel, kry vir jou ’n yskoue bottel Orange River Cellars Rosé. Die sonnige vrugtegeure van hierdie wyn is ’n perfekte smaakgenoot vir die ham of tong, en boonop is die pienk kleur sommer heerlik feestelik ook. En vir die soetigheid om die maal af te sluit, het Orange River Cellars ook net die regte ding: Muskadel. Wit of rooi. Effe koudgemaak in die yskas. Daardie Kerspoeding, koekstruif of roomys gaan handeklap vir hierdie wyn. Geseënde Kersfees.

DIE ZF Mgcawu-distriksmunisipaliteit het die tweede jaar agtereenvolgens ’n skoon ouditmening van die ouditeur-generaal ontvang. ’n Skoon ouditmening beteken dit is ’n ongekwalifiseerde ouditverslag en dat alle wette en regulasies wat daargestel is, nagekom is. ’n Ongekwalifiseerde ouditverslag is ’n verslag wat beweer die finansiële rekords van die munisipaliteit is korrek, maar beklemtoon sekere sake wat aandag moet kry. ZF Mgcawu het gebou op die progressiewe verbeterings wat betref interne beheermaatreëls en het ook gefokus op vorige jare se knelpunte wat deur die ouditeur-generaal uitgewys is. Gift van Staden, die burgemeester van ZF Mgcawu, en Elias Ntoba, die munisipale bestuurder, het eienaarskap geneem vir die bereiking van ’n skoon oudit. Op ’n vergadering met die personeellede het Ntoba sy dankbaarheid uitgespreek teenoor die personeellede vir hul onbaatsugtige diens en harde werk in

die ouditproses. As rekenpligte beampte kon Ntoba nie keer om sy trots te wys nie. “Dit is vir my ’n baie trotse oomblik dat ZF Mgcawu die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar ’n skoon oudit bereik het. “Ek wil graag die personeellede bedank vir hul onbaatsugtige diens wat hiertoe gelei het en bowenal die raad vir die vertroue wat hy in ons gestel het,” het hy gesê. Van Staden het gesê die oudituitslag was te wagte en die raad het volle vertroue gehad in die administrasie om die uitkoms te bereik. “ ’n Bepaalde standaard is gestel en dit is dat die finansiële state en alle dokumente daarmee verbonde stiptelik ingedien word aan die ouditeur-generaal,” het hy gesê. “Dit is met trots dat ek namens die raad van ZF Mgcawu die senior bestuur en die hele werkerskorps met die skoon oudit vir die 2013-’14-boekjaar gelukwens. “Ons het weer bewys dit is moontlik om hierdie prestasie te bereik.”

Die resep is genoeg vir tien mense. ) 2 x 176 g bokse Oreo-koekies (of enige ander sjokoladekoekie) ) 15 ml gelatien ) 50 ml water ) 3 eierwitte ) 210 g (250 ml) strooisuiker ) 2 x 360 g blikke karamelkondensmelk, ) 80 ml melk ) 500 ml winkel-vanieljevla ) 1 ronde winkelsjokoladekoek, ) 60 ml sjerrie ) 125 ml room ) 200 g donkersjokolade Krummel koekies tot ’n growwe mengsel en gooi die helfte onderin ’n drieliter-glasbak. Week gelatien in water tot sponserig. HEERLIKE koekstruif vir Kersfees. Klits eierwitte met elektriese klitser teen hoë spoed totdat sagte punte vorm. koekies. Skep lepels vol van oorblywende Hou aan klits terwyl jy suiker geleidelik blik karamel bo-op – dit sal in die byvoeg. Klits tot blink en styf. Hou mousse wegsink. Laat stol 3 uur in yskas. eenkant. Plaas 1 blik kondensmelk en Gooi vla bo-oor en pak skywe koek bo-op. melk in glasbak en verhit 3 minute in Sprinkel sjerrie oor. Smelt room en mikrogolfoond. sjokolade saam in mikrogolfoond tot Roer met draadklitser tot gladde gladde mengsel, giet oor koek en laat stol mengsel. Voeg geweekte gelatien by en nog 1 uur in yskas. Strooi oorblywende roer weer tot gladde mengsel. Vou koekiekrummels bo-op en sit voor. eierwitte by mengsel in en gooi oor ) Resep met erkenning aan Sarie.

Souse vul Kersgeregte aan HEERLIKE souse vir spesiale resepte vir Kersfees. ) Resepte met erkenning aan Sarie. SOETRISSIESOUS: 1 rooi soet­ rissie, skoongemaak, 1 knoffelhui­ sie, 60 ml olyfolie, 125 ml jogrut, in hand vol kasjoeneute, groot knip­ pie rooipeper. Sny soetrissie in growwe stukke en plaas saam met die res van die bestanddele in ’n voedselverwerker. Die soetrissie­ sous is ideaal vir enige sout gereg.

KARAMELSOUS: 100 g (125 ml) suiker, 125 ml room, 10 ml pienk sout. Plaas suiker in middelslag­kastrol en roer oor lae hitte met ’n houtlepel totdat dit begin smelt. Voeg room en sout by en meng deur.

SJOKOLADE­NUTELLA­SOUS: 125 ml room, 60 ml Nutella. Gooi room in kastrol. Voeg Nutel­ la by en verhit totdat Nutella gesmelt het. Gooi in ’n bekertjie en sit warm voor by nagereg of roomys.

CHRISTMAS AT THE KURUMAN LIBRARY

Orphans have a special Christmas Ilse Watson LIBRARIES in the Ga-Segonyana Municipal District held a Christmas function for orphans last Friday. This special day of festivities was held at the library in Kuruman and the children were treated to snacks, lunch (in the form of a braai) and a delicious Christmas cake. Brizelda Tities of the police in Kuruman addressed the children about their position in society and how special they were. Const. Othusitse Sepalamelo of the Kuruman police discussed various abusive situations with them and informed the children that they had to report any form of abuse to the police. They received a list of emergency numbers. The children also received a school bag, shoes and socks. One of their fun activities was to make Christmas cards. AS part of their Christmas day programme at the library in Kuruman, orphans from the area were also treated to a special lunch in the form of a braai.

Kaptein vir passie vereer Ilse Watson BREYTEN BUYS, die kaptein van die Wrenchville-krieketspan, is ’n passievolle leier wat uitdagings as deel van die groeiproses beskou. Sy benadering as kaptein van dié span het die afgelope jaar reeds groot spanne les laat opsê. Breyten is in Kuruman gebore en hy het aan die Laerskool en Hoërskool Wrenchville skoolgegaan. Hy was ook hoofseun aan albei skole. Ná sy skoolloopbaan het hy sy onderwysgraad verwerf. Sy ma, Irene, is ’n onderwyser aan die Laerskool Kuruman en sy pa, Gerhard, vorm deel van die kringbestuur van skole in die streek. Breyten se broer Werner is die stigter van die Wrenchville-krieketklub en hy is ook nog ’n lid van die klub. “Sedert my kinderdae is ek baie lief vir sport, en krieket was nog altyd my eerste liefde. Ek is ’n onderwyser aan die Hoërskool Wrenchville en ook hier doen ek krieketafrigting. Ek studeer ook vir my graad in sportbestuur.” Breyten is onlangs as die speler van die jaar van die Wrenchville-krieketklub aangewys. “Ek wil sien dat die klub die ligawedstryde wen en ook dat die jeug meer betrokke by die sportsoort raak. Ek dank die Hemelse Vader vir my talent en vir alles wat ek tot dusver in krieket bereik het.”

MAURICE PRINSLOO het al vele jong gholfspeler aan die Sishen­gholfklub afgerig.

Passievolle speler brei juniors Benneli Olivier Van der Walt

MAURICE PRINSLOO se passie is gholf. Hy is die Sishen-gholfklub se junior spanafrigter en met sy hulp raak die plaaslike spelers net beter. Prinsloo het op sesjarige ouderdom begin gholf speel en het vinnig ontdek dit is sy passie. Net daar het hy besluit om gholf sy loopbaan te maak. Hy het in Bronkhorstspruit grootgeword en in 2009 het hy hom by die professionele gholfinstansie die PGA aangesluit. In Augustus verlede jaar het hy ’n volwaardige lid van die instansie geword. Hy het in 2009 by die Serengeti-gholflandgoed in Kemptonpark begin werk.

In 2010 het hy sy eie gholfakademie by Witbank se Brackenveld-gholflandgoed geopen. Hy het in 2011 na Kathu verhuis om junior golfspelers hier af te rig. “Kathu is ’n pragtige dorp. Dit is lekker om hier in die Kalahari tussen die kameeldoringbome te bly. Die gholfbaan hier is ’n fantastiese uitdaging vir enige gholfspeler omdat dit so smal is. Dit verg ’n baie presiese spel.” Prinsloo glo junior gholfontwikkeling in die Noord-Kaap is goed op dreef. “Hier is groot potensiaal onder die junior spelers. Dit is nodig om seker te maak hulle ontvang die regte leiding en ondersteuning. Perfeksionisme in gholf is vir my baie belangrik,” sê Prinsloo.
