EDITOR’S LETTER

May your days be merry this May. Welcome “sunshine on a cloudy day” and know that “when it’s cold outside, you’ve got the month of May.” Kadena FSS May events will make you singalong with pride and joy.

Prepare for exciting days ahead as we celebrate Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, and so much more. This is just the beginning of big events you won’t want to miss!

First off, come aboard and dive into Kadena Marina’s upcoming Ocean Expo for a “sea-full” of aquatic adventures. Then walk down memory lane with Okuma Beach’s Wayback Weekend. Can’t get enough of the water? Fairchild Pool is bringing Wibit Weekend back! Don’t miss the splashiest kickoff this summer.

You won’t believe it! Outdoor Recreation’s Chibana Flea Market is also making a grand comeback – better than ever. This is your chance to shop ‘til you drop!

Want more? Swing by Banyan Tree Golf Course for a “par-fect” 2-day competition, the annual Home & Home Tournament. Win big and have fun at this “tee-rific” event! Illuminate the night with Risner Fitness Center’s Glow in the Dark Fun Run and join us as we shine a light on health.

May is packed with festivities to honor our past and those who hold a special place in our hearts. And your Kadena FSS team has prepared joyous celebrations just for you!

Starting off with Kadena Library’s tribute to Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month with story times and crafts along with Officers’ Club’s feast celebration for Cinco de Mayo. Arts & Crafts and Emery Lanes both prepared special offerings in honor of Memorial Day.

Of course, let’s not forget to express our deepest appreciation and love for our mothers. The possibilities are endless; we have prepared an array of family celebrations you can partake in.

Go on a kayak and snorkel adventure with ODR, have a beach day at Okuma Beach, get crafty with Arts & Crafts and Library, and feast down at Rocker Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs. Show mom just how special she is with all our little getaways!

We’re not done! Bring on the bubbly for a “wine-tastic” time with E’Club’s Kadena Enlisted Club Wine Fest 2024! A good wine calls for a good time so hurry and grab your tickets now!

Flip through the pages for more fun and exciting events with us. See you there, readers!

Safety Check

Driving at night can be a hazardous affair. Ensure your external and internal lights are functioning properly as they make it easier for you to spot other drivers and vice versa. If you are unaware of your light status, please stop by and let us help.

Check your engine lights closely. Your dashboard provides helpful information: red requires immediate action, yellow signals caution, and blue turns on during startup and turns off after running vehicle tests.

CULTURAL CORNER Oki

A Closer Look: Golden Week

Similar to many countries, Japan observes holidays solely meant to celebrate its distinct cultural identity and pivotal past. These occasions hold great signi cance in emphasizing the important events that have shaped their present state.

One of the busiest holiday periods in the country is the week-long festivity where locals celebrate a series of national holidays between April 29 to May 5; they call it “Golden Week.”

Golden Week is made up of four holidays to include Showa Day (Showa No Hi) celebrated on April 29, Constitution Day (Kenpo Kinenbi) celebrated on May 3, Greenery Day (Midori No Hi) celebrated on May 4, and Children’s Day (Kodomo No Hi) celebrated on May 5.

During this time, many locals travel and explore new and old destinations with signi cant historical meaning as a reminder and chance to reconnect with their heritage. This week has evolved; however, its underlying signi cance should not be overlooked.

Showa Day, formerly known as Greenery Day, is observed to honor the birthday of late Emperor Hirohito, recognized as Emperor Showa, and to remember the extended turbulent Showa era (1926 – 1989). This day also commences the renowned week-long festivities.

Initially, Showa Day commemorated the emperor’s interest for nature, hence Greenery Day, and was changed to the current in 2007.

The second holiday within Golden Week is Constitution Day, which honors the proclamation

of Japan’s post-war constitution in 1974. Various celebrations take place throughout Japan from kite ying to beach festivals as people re ect on this signi cant and historical day.

Next in line is Greenery Day, which, as the name suggests, pays tribute to nature and greenery. It is a time for people to re ect and appreciate the important role nature plays in our daily existence.

Events held during this day typically involve planting of trees, gardening, and visiting parks to show their appreciation of the natural beauty nature brings to the world.

As an ending to the week-long of festivities, you’ll see colorful carp streamers known as “Koinobori” being own all over the island to celebrate Children’s Day.

Formerly known as Boys’ Day, Children’s Day festivities include extending well wishes for good health, growth, individuality, happiness, and future success of all the children in the family.

Golden Week is observed throughout Japan; however, customs and rituals may vary among prefectures. Celebrations include local performances, holidaythemed events, indulging in special local delicacies, and so much more.

In essence, Golden Week serves as a time to re ect on the nation’s journey and a sense of rejuvenation. If you plan on taking part in these week-long festivities, be sure to plan in advance as crowds will likely start to ll popular tourist destinations.

Happy Golden Week and stay safe everyone!
