EDITOR’S LETTER Roses are red, violets are blue, Valentine’s is here, to celebrate you. Kadena FSS has countless events in honor of expressing your love and appreciation for those dear to you. But wait – February isn’t just the month of love, it’s also a time for the Big Game celebrations, Mardi Gras, Presidents Day, and numerous other festivities. Lean on Information, Tickets & Travel to plan your Valentine’s Day celebration like going on fruit picking outings for strawberries and tangerines. Outdoor Recreation has more action-filled pursuits like their NEW hiking and cycling clubs, as well as an indoor golf club and a buggy (ATV) trip, for the best adventure of a lifetime. More love-filled events await at ODR, Risner Fitness Center, Okuma Beach, and Emery Lanes – all prepared to celebrate the most romantic month of the year in the company of your loved ones. Good news! You can still splash around at Fairchild Pool with an Aquatic Snowball Fight in the midst of wintertime. Plus, another outdoor activity you can revel in is Kadena Marina and ITT’s thrilling whale watching trips. There’s more indoor fun in store! Experience Mardi Gras the tropical way at Okuma Beach and make sure to stop by Rocker Enlisted Club’s The Daily Grind for a complimentary muffin on National Muffin Day. Did you know? Karing Kennels houses an adoption facility for our furry friends to find forever loving homes. This month is extra special because they are offering discounted cat adoptions throughout the month! Talk about the best Valentine’s Day present!

How difficult Is It To Climb Mt. Fuji? It's vital for hikers to be aware of such challenges before their excursion up the legendary Mt. Fuji. The average temperature at the summit is 40° F during midsummer! Temperatures plummet even lower during nights and mornings, so make sure to wear warm clothing. In a single day's trip, you'll ascend 1,471 meters in about 7 hours. With elevation that high, some hikers may experience altitude sickness. This is due to the decrease in oxygen at high altitudes.

W hile most of the world

raises a toast for the modern Western New Year on Jan. 1, Okinawans and several other Asian countries also celebrate the first new moon of the new year, commonly referred to as the Lunar New Year. The Lunar New Year adheres to the Lunar Calendar, a system that tracks time based on the moon’s cycle. On Feb. 10, witness participants in the traditional Ryukyuan celebration as they commemorate the holiday with various types of cultural traditions.

The said holiday made its way to Okinawa and continues to be celebrated to this day, although not as common as it used to be, because of the island’s historical ties to the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom, which maintained strong connections with China, where the holiday originated. Diverse parts across the island honor the Lunar New Year, or what residents refer to as “Sōgwachi,” in their own meaningful and significant ways to pay homage to their heritage and tradition.

Regardless of the different ways people celebrate the holiday, Okinawans observe “Sōgwachi” with a united purpose: to seek positivity, successful harvest, safety, show gratitude, and bid farewell to negativity as they welcome a brighter future ahead. Okinawa, being known for its devotion and respect for its history, locals commonly engage in prayers and present seasonal delicacies to Buddha, a symbol of peace. Celebrations in some areas of Okinawa are usually solemn, but some do celebrate with traditional performances. The focal point of the festivities typically rest in places such as villages and towns where fishing holds a significant importance. Witness colorful flags displayed on fishing boats across the shorelines wishing for a fruitful fishing expedition and safety for the upcoming year ahead. As we approach the end of the year according to the lunar calendar, seasonal items like “Sōgwachi” decorations, and holiday foods such as red bean rice and pork dishes will be available in the shops across the island. There are other ways and traditions Okinawans celebrate the mark of “Sōgwachi.” Overall, this brings people together for a fun night of celebrating, feasting, drinking, and bonding. It is a time for people to extend prayers for good health and prosperity in the year ahead. For those who celebrate the holiday,

Happy Lunar New Year!

ove month is upon us, and we’ve gathered a few adorable locations for you to explore and showcase just how admirable Okinawa is. Enjoy these charming spots overflowing with pink hues, hearts, and scenic views. Okinawa is full of delightful and not-so-hidden gems perfect for capturing charming and endearing moments, whether alone, with friends, or with your special someone. We’re embracing love in this month’s edition; hoping these spots will find its way to your must-visit list this Valentine’s month – all thanks to our featured Instagram accounts. @_simplynikkie rests inside a heart-shaped light in front of a breathtaking backdrop of the sky so blue and sun-kissed rays. She traveled to Okinawa’s southern corners hunting for an array of Valentine-inspired embellishments the island has to offer. Indeed, a worth it voyage – capturing a magnificent view and embracing the month of love in one spontaneous journey. Cape Chinen Park, Nanjo, Okinawa

Are you a fan of singer-songwriter Jack Johnson? @allredabroad discovered this charming spot decked with lyrics from one of his songs on the staircase. Singalong as you climb each step and discover a surprise at the top; a cozy swing chair perfect for adorable photo ops just like this one. This specific snapshot made for an even more perfect portrait with Casey’s furry companion joining in. We are smitten by how adorable this photo turned out!

@milandwerlen journeyed to Bise Village and came across a wall decked with heart-shaped shell art, flower designs, Shisas, and vibrant greenery – all representing the essence of Okinawa. Like Milena, one should make it a point to capture every beautiful moment. The scattered artworks across the island are among the most delightful sights and experiences. It’s the unexpected discoveries that captivate and excite people, often becoming the little moments they cherish and remember most. Bise Village, Motobu, Okinawa
