The first church in Scandinavia protected with INERGEN® from Fire Eater.

Built in 1885, Honningsvåg Church is not only the oldest building on the island of Magerøya, in Northern Norway, it is also the only building which survived the end of World War II.

The Church is a beloved and cherished building of heritage and represents the extraordinary endurance of the people who rebuilt their lives and homes using the church as their base after the war in 1945.

This modest, yet beautiful timber building, seats 220 people and receives somewhere in the region of 30,000 visitors each year. ff The Fear of Fire The fear of fire was of great concern to those who maintain this historic building. As it is constructed with timber it is particularly vulnerable.

Adding another layer of complexity to the search for an adequate fire protection solution is the issue of maintaining the aesthetics of this beautifully simple building. It was very important that the building’s interior was not compromised by exposed hardware.

Whereas each heritage project is unique, the protection of irreplaceable buildings and their contained artefacts against the effects of fire pose similar difficulties: Water based solutions can create more damage and are expensive clean up. Sprinkler/watermist systems require a fire to grow to a certain point in order to sound the alarm and discharge the system. By the time the alarm has alerted the system to discharge the fire has already created smoke, fire & water damage and the loss of irreplaceable artefacts. After the fire is extinguished fire, expensive clean up operation begins.

ff The Solution After four years of deliberation and searching for a suitable fire safety solution the Municipality of Nordkapp agreed to proceed with the installation of a Fire Eater INERGEN® system.

INERGEN® is a mixture of natural gases (52% Nitrogen, 40% Oxygen & 8% Carbon dioxide). It is environmentally friendly, causes no harm to the ozone layer and has a zero global warming potential. INERGEN® is the best solution in the preservation of life, precious artefacts and business critical materials and assets.

Once a fire is detected and the Fire Eater INERGEN® system is released, it takes 30 to 40 seconds to suppress a fire.

A Fire Eater INERGEN® system works by reducing oxygen levels. This reduction in oxygen within the protected area means that a fire cannot survive or reignite.

It is always recommended to vacate immediately in the event of fire however, if this is not an option, the unique composition of INERGEN® makes it possible for people to remain in the area while the system releases and the fire is extinguished. ff The Installation The church has two extinguishing zones: Zone one covers the loft and sacristy, and consists of nine 80 litre cylinders at 200 bar, stored in the loft. Zone two protects the nave and porch and consists of seventeen 80 litre cylinders at 300bar, stored in the sacristy.

The gas is distributed via pipework installed in ceilings or under raised floors ensuring that it is dispersed evenly throughout the area being protected.
