Taking Place

Spring 2016, Copenhagen Global Exchange Program

This project started off with just a site, Masnedo Island, Copenhagen.

It is around an hour away from Copenhagen by car or three hours by train and bus. It is a very small island with a parameter of 4 miles. The task was to study and analyze the island to come up with a suitable program. The site can be small or large depending on the program.

After my site visit, I saw many vacancy areas with a lot of potential. I saw a lot of movement with in the landscape and existing structure.

Each part of the island has its own unique quality, whether it’s the material, view or location. I decided to design a campsite for children between the ages of 6-12 years old. The main campsite is on an abandoned fort on the edge of the island, which branches out carefully constructed pathways for children to reach different parts of the island to do different activities, such as fishing, obstacle courses, kayaking etc. With more visitors, the island would be more connect-ed to the main land.

Embracing the complicated movement and topography of the fort, I divided the buildings in the main campsite into 3 main types: Bridge House (connecting 2 hill tops), Slope House (embedded within the slope, extending the hill top) and Hill House (on top of the hill). There are bridges, tunnels and paths connecting these houses, creating a community. Floating gardens, as seen in the model, are perfect public spaces for children to spend time outdoors, learning different types of plant and overlooking the beautiful view of the ocean and the island.

Masnedo: The main site of this project is Masnedo Island, Copenhagen.

I was very interested in the abandoned fort on the edge of the island. Its complex and unique shape leads to my idea of movement along those hill tops.

Therefore I think a camp site for children seems to be the best suited program.

My project’s typology is divided into 3 main types: Bridge House(connecting 2 hill tops), Slope House (embedded within the slope, extending the hill top) and Hill House (on top of the hill). There are bridges and paths connecting these houses, creating a community. Floatings gardens are public spaces for children to spend time outdoors. These are the designs for children’s summer camp in the renovated fort at Masnedo Island, Copenhagen.

Performing Providence

The project started off by exploring Providence through creating our own versions of 2D, 3D and time-based maps. Later on we drew inspirations from Hasbro and study one of their characters in details, in which I chose “My Little Ponies�, in order to design our temporary pavilion in the city. Through both exercises I learnt to adapt the characters feature and turn them into architectural elements in my design. As a final, we as a class designed this pop-up installation located at Market square above, learning how to adapt our design so it is practical, time efficient and safe to build in real life.

Re-Inventing Light Structure

The task for this class is to create an architectural folly. Through the system on reinventing, reunderstanding, and redesigning light frames structures, I engaged in a process to create an interdependent relationship between structure and its user, creating a collapsible structure, crafted together with fabric and wood.

Our first assignment is to reinvent a wall system by looking at different types of frames such as reciprocal framing. As a group of three, we invented the thinnest, 6-inch deep; wall that can be flat packed and requires no fasteners. This idea was inspired by IKEA where users can easily build their own furniture at home. This wall comes in different units, with windows and doors, depending on the user’s needs. This wall can be constructed on site by just joining pieces of wood provided. Through making sets drawings and building the design at 1:1 scale helped us understand the real strength and resistance of the material.

The wall system used sheet wood instead of studs that allowed the material to be slimmer and provide lightweight construction. The horizontal and vertical members were held together by diagonals that provide pockets for insulation, keeping the layers thinner and flush with the entire system. This allowed for both rigidity and simultaneous weather resistance and permeability.

For my final project, I integrated fabric into the structure itself and transform it into a foldable folly, or what I called a super tent. It functions as an adjustable shelter that can fold flat to the ground. With one simple motion, everyone can build this tent. Balancing the weight of the structure with the tension in the fabric, opening and closing the structure requires only little amount of force since the structure would be in equilibrium.

Step11: Stretch the weatherproof membrane across the insulation and staple against the exterior face of the Vertical pieces.

Architectural Design

Spring 2015 Mathew Trimble

I started by experimenting with 3 materials, cardboard, fabric and metal. The point of the project was to create a sculpture where the 3 materials came together in harmony. I found an interesting way of connection where the fabric and metal wire created interesting patterns. I found out that the fabric was stretchy and strong. I study how the fabric splits and used it as an inspiration for the paths in my final project of design an Aquarium/Research center.

This studio allowed me to see the city as a complex large-scale architectural design I studied and analyzed how my site and surrounding work as a whole, with a focal point of housing design. Through the process of researching, I came up with my own organization of the site.

My goal is to enhance a sense of community within the area through open spaces and study of landscape design.

Architectural Analysis

Spring 2015 Ian Baldwin

Atlantida church: This church was my focus of study for Spring semester project. I looked closely at material and the curvature. The weight is balanced in very interesting ways. The bottom of the wall is in a still and straight while the top seemed to be in motion. This was one instance where I got to learn a lot about rhino and illustrator. Thinking about how the wavy ceiling and brick can be represented in different ways, I came up with the method of weaving.

Final Sculpture: At a smaller scale, the weaving represented the pattern nicely. I was also interested in the moment where the top of the wall meets the wavy ceiling; the synchronized motion that the two pieces capture mesmorized me.

Design Principles

Fall 2014 Brett Schneider

This project was inspired from the moment when water ripples intersect and creates interference patterns. I used those patterns to generate both my plans and my sections, finding nodes where they intersects and assigns them functions such as openings, stages or audiences. The curvatures of the design also helps amplify the sounds all around the area.

Providence: I was given the assignment of creating a series of drawings consisting of 50 things. Architecture being my interest, I decided to create a series based off of buildings in my surrounding area. In some instances I focused on the details of the architecture while in other instances I focused on the atmosphere.

Some collective works of architecture and non-architecture representations, including painting, pen drawing, abstract photoshop works and renders of reference buildings.

The photoshop images were made to enhance depth int he original photo using the method deconstructing and re constructing through lines, shapes and colour, where my main subjects were bridges and stairways.
