CONFERENCE & VENDOR SHOW Welcome…

I started K-9 Cop Magazine in 2009, and it has been an honor to serve the K-9 community year after year. I served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps and 7 years as a police officer. I opened the Elite K-9 Equipment Company in 2001 and later bought the K-9 BSD Company, K-9 Pro Launch Company and then Police K-9 Magazine. I have a 55 dog kennel on 48 acres including a police shooting range. To say I live and breathe K-9 would be an understatement. I am excited to bring you the 7th Annual K-9 Cop Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. This year’s conference offers you the perfect combination of instructors, interactive classes, and vendors, along with excellent opportunities for networking and idea sharing. Where better than Nashville, Tennessee? A beautiful and vibrant city with an endless array of attractions, shopping, tours, dining, and nightlife. Nashville is many things – original, eclectic, historic, dynamic, and energetic. You could spend a lifetime getting to know the city, the people, the neighborhoods, the culture, and the history that make Nashville truly original. Enjoy! K-9 Cop Conference Classes The following are brief descriptions of each class offered, along with the instructors, at this year’s K-9 Cop conference. These world-class instructors offer a variety of classes to ensure you receive the most up-to-date information, helping to advance your K-9 education. David Adebimpe, DSc, PhD, CChem ScentLogix

Unraveling the Fundamental Misunderstandings and Misconceptions about Scent Training Aids: Why a good Pseudo is better than Real What is odor? What does a K-9 actually smell within explosives, narcotics, firearms or cadavers? How does the nose work? Even with these unanswered questions, there is an institutionalized understanding that real materials make the best scent training aids for the imprinting and maintenance training of detector K-9s. However, recent findings from our laboratory and field data indicate that most of the shortcomings observed within the actions of operational detector K-9s are actually caused by the use of these real materials and of their misconceived, misconfigured analogues as scent training aids (for example, real materials mixed with inert materials) and brings to question the viability of using these real materials as gold standards for their own detection. Using scientific data, user videos, operational feedbacks, and client testimonials, this class will discuss the properties of real materials that can cause non-desirable shortcomings within detector K-9s and provide insights on how the use of next generation chemically formulated training aids, CFTAs, (aka pseudo) can circumvent these problems and provide detector K-9s with scentand-detect capabilities that are superior to those of K-9s trained on real materials. This is scent detection at its most fundamental and presented in a way that brings a new understanding to the essential characteristics of ideal scent training aids. It’s a must-attend class for all active trainers and handlers!

Dave Bessason Retired Sergeant of Winnipeg Police Service K-9 Unit

Training a Tracking Dog Step-by Step • How to introduce a young dog to tracking. • How to teach a dog corners, road crossings, double backs, cross tracks, starts, articles, and hard surfaces. • Proper patterning to re-acquire a track. • How to create a negative. • To properly read your dog while tracking. • How to properly lay a track. • Different types of tracks to lay. • Problem solving and to build tracking drive.

When the $h!+# hits the fan, what do you do next? This seminar teaches you both the knowledge and hands-on skills you need to make that decision and then take the best treatment action. Whether your K9 is bleeding profusely or was stabbed in the chest, we’ll teach what to do, when to do it, and how to do it...with plenty of hands-on practice. And because not all line-of-duty threats are traumatic, we will also cover heat injuries...the leading cause of preventable deaths in working K9s.

Proofing Building and Area Searches

Health, Hydration and Bloat What You Need to Know

Building Searches and Area Searches are a staple of police K9 work. There are many variables to consider in training a solid building search including when to use hidden and when to use visible decoys, how to address equipment orientation during searching (including equipment choices and how to achieve extinction of responses to equipment), arranging training sessions to allow for multiple deployments (repetitions) per training opportunity, variation of height, depth and permeation times, suspect encounters in a building search (including training for passive, active and hidden suspects), and improving starts to the search hunting behavior as well as building search alerts. We will include a discussion of the misuse of metal cages in proofing area searches. We will discuss how to resolve common problems in the building search and area search including multiple suspects, hunting duration and intensity, and reward schedules dogs need to perform their best. Jo-Anne Brenner K9 MEDIC

Intro to K9 Tactical Responder You hear the gunshot, followed by a squeal of pain from your K9.

Understanding hydration status and bloat in dogs in the field practical solutions.

Enhancing Your Dog’s Nose Through Nutrition & Conditioning What and how you feed your dog, with the regular exercise program you use, can make or break your dogs ability to detect and indicate when they they do.

George Daniolos K-9 Defense

K-9 Marker Training

This class will cover charging commands and intensifying innate drives. There will be several live demonstrations including: • How to build faster & more powerful entries • Create man vs equipment orientation • How to mark the right behavior during the fight • The benefits of conditioning cues—like the gunshot in GO! • Obedience: clear-cut communication for rapid response behavior Consistency in obedience and clarity in the fight are critical components of an effective patrol dog. This class will

provide you with the tools you need to maximize the power and effectiveness of your K-9 partner. David Dorn K-9 STAC and K-9FTO

The Role of the K-9 Unit Supervisor Students will leave the class with an understanding of today’s K-9 Unit Supervisor role. Whether they are a current K-9 Unit Supervisor or charged with forming a new K-9 Unit, the student/attendee will be provided with valuable insight into the role of the K-9 Unit Supervisor and the liabilities that fall upon the supervisor on every K-9 related issue.

How to Bulletproof your K-9 Unit

How Animals Learn The reason humans chose to domesticate animals was to use them in many ways; some in order to feed ourselves, some because of their extreme physical strength and some for their extreme instincts of predators. In order to use their gifts though, we had to learn how to teach them what we want them to do. We did a pretty good job in teaching the horses and I believe we are doing a pretty good job in teaching the dogs. Can we improve our ability in teaching them more and thus get even more out of their super power? We hear and read all these fancy words nowadays, such as operant and classical conditioning, positive and negative reinforcing, positive and negative punishment, luring, shaping, habituation, stimuli desensitizing, etc. Can it be just simpler so we don’t need years of education to understand all this? Once you understand how the animal learns, you will be a successful trainer.

This two-hour block provides handlers, K-9 Unit Supervisors and Police Administrators with real-world solutions for properly managing a K-9 Unit. Topics presented: • Why K-9 units fail • Public relations • Media relations including social media • Fair Labor Standards Act and handler compensation • K-9 unit policy • Training and certifications • Handler selection and retention • Deployment issues This dynamic, visual and entertaining presentation, will provide administrative tools for properly supporting, managing and utilizing a K-9 Team. Get the hard facts to manifest superior leadership before something horrible goes wrong.
