MISSION: The men and women of the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office will strive, at all times, to provide for the peace and security of all residents and visitors to Onslow County. Onslow County is located in the southeastern coastal plain of North Carolina with Jacksonville as its county seat. The county was formed in 1734 as Onslow Precinct and gained county status in 1739. The county was largely rural up until World War II, when the US Army’s Camp Davis (now

closed) and the US Marine Corps’ Camp Lejeune were established, increasing county population and business growth. Onslow County covers 906 square miles of land and water and is home to more than 185,000 people. Onslow County Sheriff’s Office has had 13 sheriffs in office since

K-9 UNIT HISTORY The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office began their first K-9 Unit in 1990 under former Sheriff, Ed Brown. The first, and only, handler for the unit’s first 10 years was Captain Tom Rafferty, who handled the Unit’s first K-9, Mirda, a Belgian Malinois. A second K-9 was donated in early 2000, a Belgian Malinois named Rhino, who was handled by Deputy Roy Hall. The Unit’s first Bloodhound, Shellie, was donated by the ALIE Foundation in 2004, and was handled by Deputy Jimbo Branson, Deputy Ashley Bishop and Deputy Josh Bixby. Deputy Bixby remained in the K-9 Unit, also working with a bloodhound named Timber until Timber’s

K-9 UNIT TRAINING One of the most important jobs in K-9 training is the decoy. Deputy Carlos Phillips and Deputy Terry Johnson make K-9 trainings on days when a decoy is needed and go all out making every scenario into a reality of what could happen on the streets. All handlers appreciate the human chew toy! The Onslow County K-9 Unit hosts multi-agency trainings every other week with surrounding
