The San Pablo Police Department’s K-9 Unit began in 1984 with one K-9.

It has since evolved into four K-9 teams as of today. We have utilized German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Shepenois, and even a Rottweiler with our department! We have recently been approved to bring on a FIFTH K-9! We only have 53 sworn officers right now, so five K-9s would be a HUGE accomplishment for us being that we started with one K-9. Our four active K-9s are:

OFFICER BRETT BENNETT & K-9 TIK Officer Bennett has been with San

Pablo PD since 2007. Officer Bennett was assigned to the K-9 Unit in 2014 and has been patrolling the streets with Tik ever since. Tik is a Belgian Malinois, born in the Czech Republic and is 5 years old. Tik understands his commands in Dutch and English, is dual purpose and trained to locate persons/ articles, tracking and trailing, and various narcotics. On Tik’s off time, he enjoys spending his time roaming his large property, hanging out with Officer Bennett, and wishing he was at work!

TRAINING

The San Pablo Police K-9 Unit trains every other week and usually with 2-3 other local agencies. We strive to expose our K-9s and handlers in every environment imaginable, in order to be prepared for anything! Our K-9 Unit is assigned to the Patrol Division and helps out on calls for service, K-9 calls for service, public demonstrations, school appearances, outside agency assists, and much, much more.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

The city of San Pablo and the San Pablo Police Department are highly supportive of the K-9 Unit. They have provided newer Ford Explorers outfitted for a K-9, allow us to train on a biweekly basis, and are supportive with other training needs that may arise. However, in order to help garner more support for our K-9 unit, we have very recently created a San Pablo Police K-9 Association. This association was created for three main reasons: to educate Officers and the Public with regards to the role of K-9s, help pay for additional training for our K-9s, and help pay for medical bills for our retired K-9s.
