NORTH OMAHA COMMUNITY HUB

PROJECT STATEMENT_

This project is a conceptual interior design/tenant finish out in an existing building in North Omaha for a collection of non-profits with similar missions to promote and advance the arts, culture, and wellbeing of residents of the surrounding historically black community. With a focus on celebrating BIPOC voices, the organizations envision the space as a collective asset for the community to celebrate their art, history, and culture while providing spaces that are safe, diverse, and inclusive supporting creative and athletic activities.

PROJECT QUESTIONS_

* How can interiors play a role in uniting a community and foster personal growth?

* How as designers can we authentically communicate and deliver on the needs/desires of a community we personally are not a member of?

* How can we design a space that encompasses unique programming, elevated experiences, and community builidng opportunities for a diverse population with differing interests in activities and perspectives?

* How can interior design contribute to the restoration of a community and enrich its history?

* How can the Design Justice Principles be implemented in the scope of this building’s design?

* How can biophilic design be implemented to improve the holistic design of the space and improve the lives of those utilizing it?

INTENTION STATEMENT_

The intention of this project is to provide an inclusive environment that inspires the community of North Omaha to further grow and add to its vibrant art, history, and culture.

By serving as a hub to learn, express creativity, and engage in athletic endeavors- such as skateboarding and dance- ones psychological and physiological well-being will be enhanced.

To support holistic well-being, elements of biophilic design (such as visual connections to nature, dynamic lighting, and biomorphic forms) will inform the space, while Red List Free/ enviornmentally certified materials further contribute to a healthy interior environment. Overall, the design experience will create a positive framework for North Omaha and its efforts for continuing community development and connection.
