3 main gubernatorial candidates all closely tied to the North Shore BY DONALD LIEBENSON

T

he three highest-profile candidates for governor of Illinois have a few things in common. Each has close ties to the North Shore. Incumbent Bruce Rauner grew up in Deerfield and Lake Forest and lives in Winnetka, while his Democratic challengers, J.B. Pritzker and Chris Kennedy, born elsewhere to prominent families, later put down roots in Evanston and Kenilworth, respectively.

All three enjoy prominent name recognition, and each came to politics from the business world. Rauner was a private equity manager and venture capitalist. Entrepreneur and investor J.B. Pritzker, an heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune and the brother to former U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, is a backer of 1871, a tech hub based in the Merchandise Mart. Kennedy, son of Robert and Ethel

Kennedy, co-founded Top Box Foods, a non-profit that provides households in needs with access to healthy and affordable foods. The personal wealth of all three has become a campaign issue. The Illinois Campaign for Political Reform (ICPR), a non-profit and non-partisan group, is forecasting that this campaign could be the most expensive in American history. The election will be held on Nov. 6, 2018, but as of May

22, Rauner had raised nearly $71 million, which includes $50 million of his own money, Pritzker had raised $7.2 million and Kennedy $1.2 million, the ICPR reports. This does not include campaign funds raised by the other candidates, Daniel Biss, Ameya Pawar, Robert Daiber and Alexander Paterakis. Combined, this is already enough money to “exceed the cost of an average gubernatorial election,” according

to the ICPR. Prior to running for governor, Rauner had never sought public office. Pritzker waged an unsuccessful bid in the 1998 Democratic primary for a congressional seat that was won by Jan Schakowsky. Kennedy had previously considered a state senate run in 2009, but opted out. NEWS

From funny family to Chicago stage BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

A

lexandra Tsarpalas got her first taste of comedic writing as a student at New Trier High School when she wrote for Lagniappe-Potpourri, a variety show written and produced entirely by students. Now, the 35-year-old former Wilmette resident is an established comedian in Chicago, and she will perform solo on June 16 at 10 p.m. and with the comedy group Mom Genes on June 18 at 6 p.m. at the 6th annual Chicago Women’s Funny Festival. Tsarpalas is part of a growing movement of women entering comedy entertainment, a field that has historically been dominated by men. She has been performing at the Chicago Women’s Funny Festival since its inception in 2012, and regularly performs at The Laugh Factory, The Book Cellar, and other comedy venues in Chicago. DailyNorthShore asked Tsarpalas about the Chicago comedy scene. DNS: How did you get your start?

Alexandra Tsarpalas, right, in comedic group Mom Genes. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHICAGO WOMEN’S FUNNY FESTIVAL

AT: I first started writing comedy as a student at New Trier High School for LagniappePotpourri. In college I did some sketch writing but I mostly focused on film studies as a student. When I graduated from college, I decided to try improv because it was always something I was interested in doing. I took classes at Second City and The IO Theater. I did it for about three

or four years but then I got burned out on improv because it’s a lot of people on stage. I decided to try stand-up instead. I took an all-female class for stand-up comedy and then I started to do stand-up and some sketch comedy. Stand-up comedy is when you use written materials with jokes that have actual punch lines, versus sketch, which is more like a Saturday Night Live skit

where you are in character. I generally do a hybrid of the two. DNS: Is it hard to get gigs? AT: There is a solid network in Chicago. Open mikes are helpful because you are seen by a lot of people. You make connections. It is hard to make the leap out of the Chicago market. DNS: How did you first get interested in comedy? AT: I’ve loved comedy since

growing up in Wilmette. I would stay up late and watch David Letterman with my mom when I was five years old. When I was in college my mother took a class and tried stand-up. I come from a funny family - it is just in us. DNS: How would you describe your style? AT: Observational but also very quirky. I have a lot of unexpected bits. One of my best is prop comedy. It can get a bad name and it can be very weird but my bit has been popular. I have these porcelain hands I put in my sleeves and I have a lot of bits on it. I bought the hands in college when I was not doing stand-up as a joke, and now it’s a bit. People love it. People will walk up to me on the street and remember me for the porcelain hand jokes. It’s crazy but true. DNS: When do you find you get the biggest laughs? AT: That prop bit is one that people respond to the most. I have some jokes that are my standbys that do well. I have a lot of commuting stories and people relate to those. I also have a couple that catch people off

guard. For example bits about the sayings inside Dove dark chocolate wrappers. I read the sayings in a dark voice and it catches people off guard. DNS: How do you deal with failure? AT: Everybody bombs - it’s universal. You won’t always know when it is going to happen. It isn’t as scary when it happens to you. After you do it for a while you realize some jokes hit well with some audiences and not with others. Sometimes the jokes need to be tweaked. You just bounce back. It is not as scary as you think it is. DNS: How do you come up with material? AT: A lot of times things pop up in my head and I have to scribble them down. I also take time to write. You really have to push through and put thought into it. Some is observational or things that have happened to me. The 6th annual Chicago Women’s Funny Festival runs from June 15 – June 18 at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont, Chicago. Visit stage773. com/WomensFestCalendar.

Shakou Arlington Heights opening weekend begins June 16 BY JAKE JARVI

W

hen Shakou Arlington Heights opens their doors on June 16, it marks the fifth community they bring their bustling city-like atmosphere to since they opened their first location in Libertyville only four years ago. Many Shakou regulars flock to the restaurant for the impeccable sushi plated with incredible panache—the sushi boat, for example, arrives with a full wooden sail and a petite fishing net hung off the mast while all manner of sushi and maki decorate the deck. The most popular Signature maki at Shakou is a new menu item, the Niku Niku. This dish features sliced NY Strip, spicy tuna, asparagus, avocado and spring greens wrapped in soy paper and topped with unagi sauce, spicy mayo, ginger dressing and chili oil. If we’re talking about lunch, patrons definitely prefer the bento boxes. Some of their most popular entrees are more traditional selections like the new Diver Scallop and Shrimp or Braised Short Rib entrees, given the inspired Shakou treatment by Chef Sang Choi. “Our entire menu is unique, in my opinion,” says Chef Choi. “My goal was to take traditional, popular Asian offerings and add Shakou twists to create something familiar yet unique. There are options for vegetarians and vegans and we even have a gluten-free and a kids menu. From appetizers to entrees to desserts, we have the ultimate dining experience in the most vibrant atmosphere I have ever seen in my many years in the business.” “All Shakou Restaurants locations have that consistent Shakou ‘city vibe’ atmosphere that our patrons have come to know and love,” says Co-owner Adam

Shakou Restaurants’ newest location in Arlington Heights has a downtown vibe and an outdoor dining area that’s just right for right now.

Garvanian. “Shakou Arlington Heights is an open, one level, free flowing energetic space that features a lounge, cocktail and sushi bars and an outdoor lounge and patio seating. It is our first location with a patio like this.” Though there’s a familiar Shakou vitality that permeates throughout each of their locations in Libertyville, Barrington, Park Ridge, St. Charles, and now Arlington Heights, each space has exciting individual touches that distinguish it to the individual community it’s a part of. “The amazing communities that surround and support the

local businesses in the areas where we have opened Shakou Restaurants have been key to our success as a brand,” says Co-owner Alex Dupor. “Chef Choi’s diverse menu coupled with the ‘city vibe’ décor and atmosphere at our restaurants drive a significant amount of repeat business for both dining and events. We have been overwhelmed at the response in Arlington Heights. This one might break all of the records and we could not be more thankful for all of the support on our fifth Shakou restaurant opening.” But they also engage the community in other ways, as well. The

Shakou Cares Program was founded by the owners of Shakou Restaurants and has become the social mission for Shakou— dedicated to raising funds, finding cures, and championing local causes. The Shakou Arlington Heights Shakou Cares Program will donate a portion of proceeds from their grand opening celebration weekend starting on June 16 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in loving memory of Lonnie Russell and to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society in loving memory of Svetomir Dupor. “The patrons at all of our

locations love the Shakou Cares Program,” says Co-owner, Ed Hartigan. “We have worked with many local families and organizations to assist fundraisers and charitable organizations through the Shakou Cares program and look forward to many more, because that is what family and community is all about. That is what the owners and staff are at Shakou—family.” The spirit of family and the energetic atmosphere is what allows Shakou to host so many kinds of customer experiences all under one roof. Looking from table to table you’ll see family

dinners, date nights, ladies nights, and business meetings. They also easily accommodate private functions, making it the natural choice for everything from private family celebrations to elaborate fundraising galas. But what the communities love about Shakou most of all, is the vibrant city feel at play every night of the week without having to trek all the way downtown.

key issue for Pritzker, for which he is a national advocate. In his campaign announcement last April, Pritzker termed himself “a genuine progressive governor for everyone” and touted his successful initiative to provide school breakfast and quality early learning to at-risk children, and his role in establishing the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center that give teachers the tools to teach children “to stand up against hate.” Included in Pritzker’s platform, according to his campaign website, are calls for a progressive

tax system to relieve the tax burden from low, middle and working class households, rebuilding Illinois’ social services and investing in community and economic development. Rauner’s re-election campaign, under the banner “Bring Back Illinois,” is focusing on such issues as term limits and fair independent maps, according to the campaign website. He, too, is focused on education, including funding reform and increasing school standards. In his budget address delivered last February, Rauner praised bipartisan efforts to solve

the state’s ongoing budget crisis. Rauner advocates restrictions on workers’ compensation payouts and a property tax freeze. “Taxing our way to a balanced budget would only hasten the exodus of jobs and families from Illinois,” Rauner stated. Regarding education, he proposed the state fully fund regular transportation costs for schools around the state for the first time since 2010, to increase funding for English-learners and early childhood education and to increase Monetary Award Program grant funding by 10 percent.

NORTH SHORE FOODIE

Summer in, dining out: Beelow’s Steakhouse is the patio to be BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

B

eelow’s NorthShore won’t be taking any chances on the unpredictable Chicagoland weather: The steak and seafood restaurant in Highland Park installed a year-round patio with a full bar. The patio officially opened in early June and is equipped with a heated floor and ceiling, retractable roof, and retractable siding. Owner Dan Beelow is an entrepreneur and third-generation farmer who owns a farm in Mundelein. Leo Guili, general manager, explained that Beelow always wanted to have a restaurant. After he opened Beelow’s Steakhouse in Lake Zurich, his next destination was Renaissance Place in Highland Park. Guili said Beelow’s brings in a lot of its own farm-raised beef from Mundelein, which combined with the aging process makes the restaurant a cut above other steakhouses. “Steaks are aged at least 45 days, and they’re both wet and dry aged,” Guili added. “The wet aging comes first. It’s hung in a temperature-controlled environment with salt blocks and afterwards it’s vacuum packed, sealed and aged for another 21 to 28 days.” Beelow’s opened in March 2015 on the site that previously housed Rosebud, and is adjacent to the Landmark Renaissance  Place Cinema.  After Rosebud moved to Deerfield, two restaurants from the owner of Inovasi Restaurants, Moderno and Royce, took over the space from 2012 to 2013. The first year Beelow’s opened, the restaurant only had about four tables a day for lunch, so Beelow’s stopped serving lunch for a while. But now with the year-round patio, Beelow’s decided to revamp its lunch menu with spin-offs from the dinner menu, and new items as well. For example, the smoked sirloin sandwich was featured at the Taste of Highland Park for the last two years and won an award for best entrée the first year. Now it’s always available on the lunch menu, said Guili. The lunch menu includes the blackened tilapia sandwich, as well as other sandwiches and wraps, and a selection of burgers. Both the burgers and meatballs appetizer are made with ground beef from Beelow’s farm.

Above: It’s outdoor dining season and Beelow’s Steakhouse in Highland Park is just the place. Below: General Manager Leo Guili. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER

Guili explained that Beelow’s dinner entrée salads are very large, and the only difference is that the lunch salads come without a

protein, but you can add shrimp, available for both lunch and salmon, or chicken. He added dinner. that Kelly’s spicy Asian shrimp The Beelow’s staff has lunch is a popular appetizer that is efficiently timed to meet the

needs of mid-day customers — lunch typically is served in about seven minutes. “We’re trying to show people that they can leave the office, come here for lunch and be back in a half hour,” said Guili. He added that Beelow’s lunch still has the same quality food and service, but offers that option for those on a tight schedule. Guili enjoys being in the heart of Highland Park surrounded by condominiums and businesses in Renaissance Place. “We have a lot of regulars and a big following at Happy Hour, which is from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. every day with half off beer, wine, cocktails and everything except bottles of wine and high-end scotches,” he said.  Guili knows many of the regulars by name, and the same is true about Beelow’s in Lake Zurich where he worked prior to Highland Park. Guili remembered one customer who came in for tenderloin beef stroganoff two or three times a week. “We have big portions, so he would eat half of it, take the

other half home and come back two days later and do it all over again,” he said. Beelow’s will host a monthlong fundraising event in July or August. One event is set up with the Alzheimer’s Association and the second event will be Friends for Health, according to Guili. The first Tuesday of the month will kick off the event and throughout the month, for anyone who comes in with the group, Beelow’s will donate a percentage of their bill to the organization. “Dan Beelow likes taking care of people whether it’s staff, or customers, and it’s a joy to go to work every day,” said Guili. “It’s not just a job anymore - it’s family.” For example, he said that on July 4th the owner will close the restaurant for a staff appreciation day that’s held at his house on the farm. Beelow’s NorthShore is located at 1850 Second Street in Highland Park. For more information call 847-780-3300.

Trevians fall but embrace third-place game at Class 4A state baseball tournament

P

laying in a third-place game can be hard. You know. All dressed up and … nothing to play for. Hmm, upon further review, New Trier head baseball coach Mike Napoleon didn’t really see it that way. “I know I didn’t feel like this after last night’s game,” said the Trevians coach, referring to his team’s hard-to-take 9-3 loss to Crystal Lake South in the semifinal round of the Class 4A state baseball tournament in Joliet. “But thank God for this game. It was great. It was a lot of fun.” The result? Similar to the Crystal Lake South game. The 30-6 Trevians fell behind 6-0 after two innings, battled back to tie the game 6-6 and wound up losing 11-6 to St. Laurence for a fourth-place finish on June 10. Napoleon used four pitchers — starter Thomas Nugent and relievers Jack French, Peter Schuldt and Spencer Beacom — and 19 positions players in the contest. The veteran coach managed to play a game within a game in the fourth inning, when the Trevians sent 10 batters to the plate and tallied all six of their runs. “We did exactly what we wanted to do,” said Napoleon, referring to a creative substitution plan. For instance, senior shortstop Kevin Donahue coaxed a one-out walk and left the game for a pitch runner: junior Evan Hummel. Then, senior designated hitter Dylan Horvitz lined a single to left field and was replaced by junior Brian Kerwin. And later, senior left fielder Sean Douaire drew a free pass and was lifted for senior Carter Heisinger, while senior Eric Moerschel subbed in to hit for starting senior right fielder Matt Kann. And so it went. By the time the game ended, reserves Francis Fay (senior outfielder), Robbie Pettas (senior catcher), Kyle Caponi (junior outfielder) and Griff Ryan (junior first baseman), along with parttime starters Patrick Jodloman (junior pitcher/third baseman) and

And St. Laurence (36-6) threw a formidable lineup at the NT hurlers. Nugent, who started the game, gave up with a two-run blast in the first inning to Vikings catcher Matt McCormick. Then, in the second, Nugent gave up four runs — all unearned. The senior right-hander, who was the winning pitcher against South Elgin in the supersectional at Schaumburg on June 5, finished the season with a sterling 12-2 record. St. Laurence’s other big blow came in the bottom of the fifth, when No. 9 hitter Brian Lyle left the yard with a two-out grand slam. game was an uphill climb for the Trevians, who had not lost since May 6. The first jolt came in the opening frame, when Noah Tyrrell of the Gators smacked a two-out, three-run homer off Jodloman. Then came the add-ons. CL South scored two-out runs in the second and third innings. And then, the Gators went up 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth on three singles. NT used four different hurlers — Jodloman, Jack Falk, Douaire and Joe Bullard — in the contest, while junior right-hander Kyle Lang went the distance for CL South and improved his record to 10-0. “Their guy lived on the outer corner,” said Napoleon. “He did a nice job of changing speeds.” State Semifinal Redding, Douaire and Shapiro In the top of the sixth inning, had two hits apiece, while NichoNew Trier had a breakthrough. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

SPORTS

RUN, ISABELLA, RUN! Miracle baby Marsico shocks the field, finds herself on the fast track BY BILL MCLEAN,, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

I

sabella Marsico was 2 years old when a virus attacked her lungs. It meant a one-month stay in the intensive care unit at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago — and it wasn’t the first extended stay at a hospital for the toddler from Lake Forest. Marsico, a triplet, weighed a tad more than 2 pounds at birth. The former womb mate of Rocco and Olivia could not enjoy her first day at home until the fourth week of her life. “Her body temperature reached 105 degrees, and it was like her lungs belonged to someone with full-blown emphysema,” Jenny Vacala, Marsico’s mother, says of Isabella’s second health scare. “Our fear was that she would need a lung transplant.” But Marsico’s condition improved steadily, to the delight and surprise of many. Her breathing would return to normal, coinciding with the end of her mother’s sighs of relief. “I thought, when she was in that hospital,” Vacala says, No way would Isabella be able to play sports. Fast forward to the spring of 2017. A fifth-grader and first-year track and field athlete at Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest runs against mostly seventh- and eighth-graders in 800- and 1600meter races at meets. Her very first clocking in the 1600 is a 6:14. Her second time at the distance? Faster. She wins a race, then another, then a third. The rookie runner begins to record sub-6-minute times — all the way down to a personal-best 5:44 at a sectional meet in May, a result that would have placed her 13th against high school milers at the Class 3A Loyola Academy Sectional in May. Isabella Marsico’s lungs are functioning quite well these days. “My friends at school convinced me to go out for track and field,” says Marsico, an 11-yearold who qualified to race in the 1600 (against 12- and 13-year-old girls in her heat) at the Class 7AA Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) state meet in East Peoria last month. “My family, friends and teammates have been very supportive.”

IZZY ROCKS: Deer Path Middle School’s Isabella Marsico (front) competes in the IESA state girls track and field meet last month in East Peoria. PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN MICHALESKO

Her race strategy is as uncomplicated as a thoroughbred’s typical plan is at the start of a derby at Churchill Downs. “I just kind of go,” says the 4-foot-6 Marsico, who intends to try out for the DPMS cross country team as a sixth-grader in the fall. Vacala liked to jog in front of her four bike-riding children (the triplets’ younger sister is Lola, 10), with most of the journeys around neighborhoods starting as early as 6 a.m. Isabella no longer pedals behind her mother. “She runs with me,” Vacala says. “At times I have to yell, ‘Slow down!’ ” Marsico’s aunt, Kristy McCullough of Wilmette, has raced

in seven marathons, including a couple of Boston Marathons. The upstart’s grandfather, Pat Vacala, has completed marathons, triathlons and Ironman competitions. Grandpa Vacala couldn’t watch his granddaughter compete at the state meet, but he called her an hour before the start of the 1600 heats to offer some valuable tips and give her a pep talk. “Isabella’s family members — they’re all into it, into what Isabella is doing as a runner,” say Deer Path Middle School distance track coach and cross country coach Martha Sostre, who ran for Hawkeyes teams at the University of Iowa and later coached varsity boys cross country teams at Mundelein High School from 1998-2001. “What an in-

spiration she is, what a fighter. Man, she is fast, with such an efficient stride, and her perseverance is out of this world. What she did in that last straightaway at the sectional, the determination she showed all of us … that got her to state. “Isabella,” the coach adds, “has this joy about her that I love. And she never complains. At the beginning of the season, I told her, ‘These [800 and 1600] are your events.’ She looked at me and said, without hesitation, ‘OK.’ She’s coachable, humble, respectful and kind.” She was nearly a two-time IESA state qualifier as a raw trackster, having missed a berth in the 800 meters by one second with her time of 2:39 at that sec-

tional in May. Marsico — a former soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, hockey, baseball, tennis and football (at recess) player — plans to train as a runner and attend a cross country camp at Lake Forest High School this summer. Marsico had been encouraged by her mother, for years, to try any sport she thought she would enjoy. She flashed eye-popping speed — in all of them. Competitive running entered Marsico’s life in March, and it certainly appears Marsico has no intention to escape it. Maybe she’ll stick with the distance events. Maybe a coach will give her a shot at taking on sprinters someday. What Vacala knows for sure:

Marsico loves to scorch track lanes. “Her first meet, I’ll never forget it,” Vacala says. “She just … took off, never looked back. Everybody was way behind her. And it kept happening. After races, she’d run up to me with a huge smile, all excited — but in a contained way.” Marsico’s favorite class in the 2016-17 academic year was Language Arts. She wants to be either a doctor or a full-time athlete when she grows up. Near the end of an interview, Marsico is given a hypothetical: What would you do with your free time if you were ordered not to run for a week? Marsico smiles briefly and then turns serious. “I’d run,” she says.

The two kept in touch for years thereafter before Reinsdorf chose Huff to streamline the Bulls/Sox Academy in 2009. In 2001 the academy opened the only year-round youth player development facility in the country owned and operated by a professional team. (Dozens of pro sports organizations have launched similar academies since then). It offers programs — for beginners and advanced players, boys and girls (ages 5-18) — in basketball, baseball and fastpitch softball. “Jerry is always looking to give back,” Huff says. “One of the ways he does that is through the academy. He was born in Honolulu on August 11, 1963, the first son of Robert and Karen. Robert was a guitarist in a quartet at the time, performing with an immensely talented woman who moonlighted as one of Michael Huff ’s babysitters. Was Huff a handful all those years ago? Bette Midler would know.
