New Trier opens doors to rehabbed Winnetka campus BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
N
ew Trier Township High School welcomed the community to tour the brand new West Building at its Winnetka campus on October 15, celebrating the completion of a renovation project that broke ground in spring 2015 and was completed in two phases. From the outside, the east campus’s new West Building seamlessly blends in with the original structure, with a matching brick exterior and uniform windows. Only the North Entrance, a glass extension that sheds light throughout the West Building, is an indication that something is new at New Trier. The new West Building stands where the 1912 cafeteria, 1931 Tech Arts Building and 1950 Music Building, once Continued on PG 14

t’s a long-standing American tradition for homes to beckon trick-or-treaters with a candle-lit pumpkin on Halloween. But on the North Shore, the fall front stoop has evolved from the resting place of a hand-carved Jack o’ Lantern sporting a snaggletooth grin to complex displays of flowers, foliage and gourds of every color and shape. Homeowners are spending hundreds of dollars, and sometimes more, on stand-out, professionally designed planters and step displays. Winnetka resident Amy Swartchild, a professional chef and floral designer specializing in outdoor arrangements and indoor table-scaping, uses materials she sources from pumpkin patches, farms and local stores, as well as found objects, such as branches, from her yard. “I’m always inspired by the idea of the harvest,” said SwartContinued on PG 10

four times a year, and most are ready for a full switch of materials at this stage. “Many customers will request arrangements that are symmetrical, like a fairytale of cascading pumpkins and gourds,” said Swartchild. So many people have complimented my front stoop. The arrangements makes my home feel inviting and festive for the upcoming season.” At Chalet Nursery in Wilmette, head horticulturist Tony Fulmer designs his fall planters as a last burst of color before the long Chicago winter sets in. “Once the summer annuals look tired, it’s really hard to beat
great way to create a personalized look that won’t be seen up and down your street,” said Fulmer. Although floral designers can charge between $500- $1,000 to fill a pair of ornamental frontdoor planters, not everyone chooses to outsource the work to professionals. Sally Veenstra, a Winnetka resident and avid gardener, enjoys assembling her own doorstep urns each season, drawing inspiration from the beautiful planters she sees gracing the entrances of high-end hotels and office buildings in Chicago. “Gardening is a creative outlet from my corporate life,” said Veenstra. “I try to build a non-
standard look by planting things off center and at angles, while adding unconventional colors and natural décor, like dried pods and reeds.” She added: “I’ve learned from professionals through the years to vary textures, heights, ensure movement, and then grab what appeals as you shop.” Inspiration may come from a variety of different sources, but there’s one ingredient to maintaining any fall arrangement once it’s been purchased or assembled and planted: water. “When cooler weather approaches, we often forget to water all those plants,” said Amy Swartchild. “So don’t forget to water!”

A photo op for hurricane relief BY LIBBY ELLIOTT DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
W
hen pals and fellow dog lovers Lyn Flanner y and Brenda Bridges heard that 43 Houston-area pets displaced by Hurricane Harvey had been brought to PAWS Chicago to begin new lives, they decided to lend a hand. On October 1 in Cunliff Park in Glenview, the pair put together a successful “Pets in the Park” fundraiser on short notice, offering complimentary pet photos to guests and raising hundreds of dollars to support the ongoing work of The Humane Society. Flannery, a Wilmette resident, and Bridges, of Glenview, would often walk their dogs together and remark on their good fortune to live in petand family friendly communities. The two North Shore businesswomen had often talked about giving pet por-
traits to their f riends and clients as gifts, but it wasn’t until they learned about local efforts to help rescue hundreds of Houston’s lost, abandoned and relinquished pets that they sprang into action. Within a week, the pair had hired a photographer, found a location, and sent out postcards to let f riends and neighbors know about “Pets in the Park.” “We recognize that pets are family, too!” said the flier Flannery and Bridges printed to advertise the event. “And with the recent natural disasters, many pets have been ripped away from their families.” Flannery, a broker with @properties and mother to three sons aged 21, 18 and 12, as well as a goldendoodle named Jett, reached out to local photographer and friend Susan Sorano of Forever Kids Photography. Sorano offered to take keepsake digital portraits of dogs and their owners

business owner to partner on the event, he declined, expressing skepticism that pet portraits would be enough to draw a crowd. “He said that without a band or open bar, absolutely no-one would show up,” said Bridges, mother to three kids ranging in age from 20 to 16, as well as two furry children: Taco, a puggle, and Stella, a boxer. She’s also a financial advisor at Lakeshore Financial Group emphasizing planning for women. He was wrong. Even with just a week’s notice, 21 petowners came through Cunliff Park on October 1 to have their photos taken and make a donation. Flannery and Bridges even accepted donations to The Humane Society from several non-pet owners who happened to be in the park that afternoon. “Knowing what a committed and cause-oriented community we live in, and believing
that people would want to support the not-so-fortunate animals displaced by the hurricanes over the past few weeks, we bet that residents would come out in force,” said Flannery. “And they did!” One dog arrived dressed as a skunk. Another came wearing Yoda ears. Impromptu doggie play dates naturally ensued. “The dogs had a great time together while waiting for their photo session,” said Flannery. “And we really enjoyed meeting all the pet owners.” Glenview resident V ic Levinson, who attended the event with his wife, Polly, and their three canine children, Aspen, Bruiser, and Pugi, expressed his support for the effort. “It’s wonderful right now to have something like this that everyone can get behind in our community,” said Levinson. “It gives me hope.”

1780 Shore Acres Drive: Quiet grandeur on the 10th hole BY LIBBY ELLIOTT DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
T
he Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland — widely considered the “home of golf ” — is renowned for its rolling, windswept hills and understated elegance. That same quiet grandeur distinguishes the century-old Shoreacres Country Club in Lake Bluff, home to a Seth Raynor-designed golf course that regularly ranks in America’s top 50. It was overlooking Shoreacres’ 10th Hole, a Raynor replica of the famously difficult St. Andrews “Road Hole,” that Frederick Hampton Winston and his wife, Myra Breckenridge Winston, built a stunning Mediterranean Revival-style home during the Roaring Twenties at 1780 Shore Acres Drive, now known as The Winston House. Frederick, the son of Frederick Seymour Winston, a founding partner of the prominent Chicago law firm Winston & Strawn, was a real-estate developer and the original owner of the residential lots on the north edge of the Shoreacres club. Although the official provenance of The Winston House is unknown, evidence suggests Russell Walcott designed the Los Angeles-style Mediterranean home during his partnership with prolific Chicago architect David Adler. Set on 2.6 acres and surrounded by woods to the west and the golf course to the south, the 8,000-square-foot Winston House was undoubtedly the

An expansive open kitchen is now connected to the home’s renovated coach house and garage via a windowed walkway, and features four ovens, eight burners and two dishwashers. A ramshackle greenhouse was gutted and repurposed as a state-of-the-art wine cellar. ‘The developers knocked down a rabbit warren of rooms to create a large, totally new space,” said Mrowiec. An old, dilapidated porch has been transformed into a sumptuous cocktail bar, with one set of French doors opening to the golf green, and another leading into an intimate dining room still decorated with the home’s original 1920s wood-paneled walls, but now updated with an elegant Mahogany stain. New Trier alumnus Dr. Peter Blair Henry, dean of New York University’s Stern School of Business, gave the keynote address, and Greg Robitaille, school board president, shared his remarks. The administration, school board, community and students were excited to see the completion of this much-anticipated project. As visitors wandered the West Building, many people remarked how it looked and felt like a college campus. “It is very like a university style and very well planned. There is a nice flow to everything,” Susan Cummins, a Wilmette resident, remarked as she toured the library. The West Building’s open layout provides many places for students to find reprieve during the day. ince taking over the reigns of the Winnetka Community House four months ago, Robert Thomas remains focused on ensuring that the 106-year-old nonprofit remains relevant. “ We are a house that happens to be three and onehalf acres big. I want people to feel welcome and energized and want to come here,” Thomas told DailyNorthShore. Founded in 1911, the mission of the Community House is to enrich the lives of North Shore residents. The nonprofit does this by providing educational, cultural, social and recreational programming and events. The Community House includes state-of-the-art fitness equipment, extensive arts and theatre programming, classes for all ages, as well as numerous events. In many ways the Community House is the heartbeat of Winnetka. It is a place where people of all ages gather to socialize, work out at the fitness center or take classes. “I love the history of it. It is the center of the community,” Thomas explained. Thomas said he has met many residents whose families have been coming to the Com-

Tir earns medalist honors as New Trier wins another state championship BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

enelope Tir’s relationship with golf got off to a rough start some 10 years ago. Tir was 7, when she received a bright, yellow golf bag with only a handful of clubs in it. Her father, Ty, had hoped Penelope would hit shots straight around Winnetka Golf Club and become instantly … hooked. “I actually really, really disliked golf back then,” Tir, now a New Trier junior, admitted earlier this week. “I felt bored. I kept missing the ball. “I wanted to run around, like you can in soccer.” Tir had a ball last weekend — on a golf course in downstate Forsyth. The Trevian shot rounds

relaxed in a tournament as I did at state last weekend.” Notable: New Trier girls golf coach Scott Fricke noted junior Lizzie Kenter’s resiliency following her 99 at a regional meet earlier this month lifted his Trevians during the rest of the state series. Kenter improved by 15 strokes at a sectional five days later and then turned in sturdy rounds of 79 and 76 at state last weekend. “To see her rebound from that, probably her highest round in three years, and do what she did for us was great and rewarding,” Frick said. “She was more focused, beginning with the sectional. More patient, too. She knew what was at stake. Lizzie also knew we needed her to play well.” … Fricke served as an assistant to former NT girls golf coach Gary Groh in the 2003 season, when the Trevians captured their fourth straight state championship. Fricke became the varsity’s head coach the following season. LOYOLA ACADEMY

Tir placed sixth at state as a Only one other female New freshman and improved to fourth Trier golfer (Alexis Wooster, in last fall. 2000) had emerged as a state “I told Penelope, after she had
won state, ‘You were supposed to finish second this year and then improve once again and win it next year as a senior,’ ” Fricke said with a laugh. Tir got off to a shaky start in the first round, carding a doublebogey six on the first hole. But she birdied the next hole, made par on No. 3 and birdied the parthree No. 4. Tir shot one-over for the rest of her round, pacing NT’s aggregate of 303. Trevians senior Rachel Rhee shot a 75, followed by freshman Audrey Tir’s 77 and junior Abbie Kaestle’s 78. Audrey Tir — the team’s low scorer, with a 72, at the Wheaton Academy Sectional at Pheasant Run Golf Resort in St. Charles on Oct. 9 — is Penelope’s younger sister. “It’ll be nice having those two sisters back next year,” Fricke said. What was enjoyable for New Trier’s squad at the halfway point at state last weekend: a 10-stroke advantage over its nearest pursuer,
Barrington. Barrington’s Fillies matched the Trevians’ 300 score in the second round. Fricke had 155 reasons to smile on Day 2 when the Trevians’ early finishers (Kenter and senior Megan Gabor) completed rounds of 76 and 79, respectively. “Lots of insurance with those two scores,” Fricke said. Audrey Tir ended up in a tie for 23rd place (77-76). Kaestle (78-77) and Kenter (79-76) tied for 30th, and Rhee — a four-year varsity golfer — finished in a tie for 35th place (75-81). Gabor bettered her Day One round by seven strokes with her 79 on Oct. 14. “We had a great Friday,” Fricke said, adding the conditions on Oct. 13 were wet and sloppy following rainy midweek days in the Decatur area. “To end up with such a big lead after 18 holes, with shots not rolling for everybody on a soggy course, was huge for us … huge.
“And our team depth came through for us.” Fricke figured at least half of his team enjoyed a deep sleep on the van trip home Oct. 14. Three rounds in three days, including a practice round on Oct. 12, can be exhausting. State champ Penelope Tir was wide awake on her first day back to school on Oct. 16, a bit behind in her schoolwork — like every state-qualifying golfer — but thrilled to receive countless high fives and hugs and shouts of “Congratulations!” in the hallways. “It meant a lot to me, to be able to help our team win a state championship,” Tir said. “The team is much more important to me than any individual honor is. Golf, I’ve learned, is all about adjustments, adapting and playing your lies as best you can each day. But the key to golf, really, is staying calm and relaxed during a round. “I’d never felt as calm and
The Ramblers finished eighth (640) at the Class 2A girls golf state tournament last weekend in Forsyth, with senior Nina Rutkowski leading the way with a 30th-place 155 (76-79) at Hickory Point Golf Course. Sophomores Mary Boesen (161) and Grace Kryscio (166) ended up second and third, respectively, among Ramblers. Senior Tatum Koehn and juniors Lilly Gentzkow and Shea Graf also competed for LA. HIGHLAND PARK
The Giants’ lone state qualifier, junior Julia Shafir, finished 54th at state in Forsyth, carding a two-day total of 162 (77-85) — tied for the fourth-best state showing in program history. Only two other Giants had shot a lower state round than the 77 Shafir recorded on Oct. 13. “Excellent performance,” Highland Park coach Cathy Nachman said. “My assistant coach [ Jessica Berens] and I are very proud of Julia’s accomplishments this season.”

For only the second time in program history, a Trevian captured medalist honors at the girls golf state tournament. Tir carded splendid rounds of 73 and 71 at the par-72 Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth to edge a pair of other Class 2A competitors by one stroke on Oct. 13-14. The junior — sixth at state as a freshman and fourth last year — also returned home with a team medal. NT’s talented crew topped state runner-up Barrington by 10 strikes to claim the program’s seventh overall title and third in eight years. TURNING THE TIDE
Lake Forest High School’s Seaman breaks through at state meet, helps team to a second-place finish BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
F
our years ago, as a 4-foot11 f reshman, Michael Seaman tried to keep up with the competition by mashing the ball with all of his might. In baseball vernacular, he swung for the fences. His inability — at the time — to drive a golf ball to faraway greens drove him a little batty. “I’d hit the ball 200 yards, while the guys I went up against were hitting it 270,
this up?’ ” Seaman never lost his focus — despite his tough start. He had double bogeys on the sixth, seventh and 11th holes and sat in a tie for 38th place with five others after the first 18 holes. “I was feeling something — even in the first round,” said Seaman. “My swing felt good. The best it’s felt in a while. “By the second round, I felt like I was in control of my game,” he added. “Felt like I was right where I needed to be.” By the time Round Two came around, Seaman truly was in a zone. He overcame a bogey on 2 and wound up with 12 pars and five birdies on the day. His 68 matched Stevenson junior Jackson Bussell, who went home with medalist honors (141). “This feels pretty good,” said Seaman. “I went into the tournament thinking about how I can help the team. I wasn’t even thinking about individual placement.” Seaman had LF’s fifth score at the Warren Sectional on Oct. 9. Thus, his skyrocket performance might have caught some off guard. But not Matheson. “All six of our guys are capable, but we needed someone to go low,” said Matheson. “And Michael was the one this time.” In securing second place, the Scouts also received solid work from seniors Scott Frevert and Connor Polender and junior Danny Fisher. Frevert just missed earning all-state honors with a 148 (tied for 12th). Polender came in with a 150 (tied for 18th), while Fisher had a two-day total of 151 (tied for 26th).
I never questioned what he was doing out there. I never thought, ‘Oh man, can he keep this up?’ ” — Lake Forest High School boys golf coach Jim Matheson 280,” Seaman said. Well, as they say, that was then. And this is now. As a 6-foot senior, distance no longer is an issue for Seaman. And there were absolutely no shortcomings with Seaman’s swing at the Class 3A state meet at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington on Oct. 13-14. The Lake Forest High School golfer turned in a masterful performance on the biggest stage of the season, earning all-state honors with a seventh-place total (146) and helping the Scouts claim a second-place trophy. “What a great way for him to end his high school career,” said LF head coach Jim Matheson, who watched his team finish two strokes in back of Hinsdale Central 593-595 and seven strokes in front of

third-place Stevenson. Seaman’s route to all-state recognition was hardly a gimme. At the outset, things didn’t look particularly good for the LF golfer. His f ront-nine score in Round One of the tournament
was a pedestrian 41. But Seaman stayed with it. And he eventually found his stairway to seven. He capped Day One with a 37 and then dazzled the fairways on Day Two with a 35 and a 33. “He found his groove,” Matheson said of Seaman’s
amazing progression. “He was hitting everything solidly. Nothing went crooked. He started to figure it out on [Friday’s] back nine. “And I never questioned what he was doing out there,” the coach added. “I never thought, ‘Oh man, can he keep
HIGHLAND PARK
Sparked by the trio of Joey Harrigan, Bradley Goldstein and Max Golding, Highland Park made a run for a state trophy. The Giants shot a 605 for fourth place, a mere three strokes behind third-place Stevenson. Harrigan, Goldstein and
Golding shot 150s to share 18th place with five other players. Senior Charlie Ezgur, who shot an eagle in Round Two, ended up with the team’s fourth score: 155. LOYOLA ACADEMY
Peter Radler turned in a stellar effort for L oyola Academy. The junior ended up with a 147 to earn all-state honors. He shot a 74 (37-37) on Day One and a 73 (34-39) on Day Two. Senior Chip Savarie capped his high school career by carding a 36-hole total of 151, tying him for 26th place. As a team, the Ramblers got off to a great start (2nd place after Day One) but wound up placing fifth (608). LA’s other scorers were junior Jack Crawshaw (154) and senior Ben Scherman (156). NEW TRIER
A strong finish made things interesting for New Trier. The Trevians, who were sitting in ninth place after the first round, rallied to shoot a 300 on Day Two to end up sixth overall (613). Senior Michael Tanaka came up with the team’s top finish (152, tied for 32nd). Sophomore Daniel Tanaka shot a 153, while NT’s other scorers were seniors Will Nummy (154) and Max Weber (157). Senior Bennett Huber had a 158, while sophomore Brian Joseph added a 159. Notable: Can you say, dynasty? Hinsdale Central now has won six straight Class 3A state titles. The future? That also looks pretty good for the Red Devils. Their top four finishers — junior Mac McClear (145, tied for 5th), junior Josh Lundmark (147, tied for 8th), sophomore Stewart Leigh (150, tied for 18th) and junior Gabe Larson (154, tied for 39th) — figure to return next season.

Putting away the distractions Focused Goldberg proved to be one of the attractions at the Highland Park tennis sectional BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
O
n the eve of last weekend’s Class 2A Highland Park girls tennis sectional, junior Caitlin Goldberg decided to have some fun in front of her teammates. Goldberg — Highland Park High School’s No. 1 singles player and a two-time state singles qualifier before last weekend’s action — turned into somebody she is not during a stretch of downtime in practice. “Caitlin,” junior teammate Ashley Lew recalled, “impersonated a bad tennis player with bad form, with weird form. So funny. She made all of us laugh. She made all of us happy.” She made spectators applaud on Oct. 13-14, thanks to her sound tennis game and nodoubt-about-it winners. Secondseeded Goldberg qualified for the state tournament for a third time with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Libertyville’s Kiley Nolan in a quarterfinal on Oct. 13. The Giant then solved Warren’s Sabrina Mella 6-1, 7-6 in a semifinal before bowing to the top seed, Lake Forest High School freshman Kiley Rabjohns, 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match. The singles and doubles finals and third-place matches were played indoors at Libertyville Tennis and Fitness Club on Oct. 14 because of incessant rainfall. “Caitlin is a bulldog, a fighter, a nice competitor,” Giants coach Steve Rudman said of his lefthanded netter with the 18-4 singles record, which includes an impressive 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Hinsdale South junior Agata Mikos, a 5-8 seed at state last fall. “She’s no longer distracted while playing tennis,” the coach added. “Before this year, Caitlin sometimes was worried about too many things outside of tennis. But now, when she’s on the court, she just … plays. And she’s playing with confidence, and she’s competitive with the top players in the state. She’s always had the talent. Now she has the strong mental game to go with her talent. Add it up; her improved focus made her a better all-around player.” One of Goldberg’s reliable weapons is her topspin forehand. The heavy shot forces her opponents to strike replies well
be a totally different one, camaraderie-wise, without Caitlin.” Notable: Buffalo Grove High School will serve as the host school for the state girls tennis tournament, set to begin on Oct. 19 and end on Oct. 21. LAKE FOREST HIGH SCHOOL
Scouts freshman Kiley Rabjohns (singles champion) and doubles duo Salma Alsikafi/Nika Belova (runner-up) extended their seasons with state-qualifying efforts at the Class 2A Highland Park Sectional last weekend. LFHS (26 points) took second in the team standings. NEW TRIER

above their strike zones. The bounding shot also often sets her up to finish a point. Her serves? Goldberg has three types: slice, flat, topspin. All are effective. “So much spin,” Lew said of most of Goldberg’s deliveries. “They’re fast, too. They’re really, really hard to return.” Harder than that — keeping up with Goldberg during a team run to Highwood and back before practices. The exercise gives Goldberg an excuse to sprint. “Way ahead of the rest of us, always,” Lew said. “So far ahead. Caitlin’s conditioning, in addition to her game, has improved a lot since last year.” Goldberg swam competitively, mostly as a breaststroker, between the ages of five and 10. Her older sister, Rachel — a four-time state doubles qualifier in tennis (with four partners at HPHS, from 2009-12) — inspired her to forgo strokes in the pool and develop completely
different ones on land. “I remember my first tennis lesson and my first match in a tournament,” Goldberg said. “My instructors made it clear to me that I’d have to work hard at my game, but I was OK with that because I was motivated to improve, to do whatever it took to get better. My mom [ Jane], she entered me in a tournament. I must have been 10, and I think I had to play the No. 1 seed in the first round. “I lost 6-1, 6-1.” But the rout didn’t deter Goldberg. She looked at what was going on in the matches around her and set a lofty goal. “I wanted to be like the players who came off the court as winners,” recalled Goldberg, who went 3-2 in singles at each of the 2015 and ’16 state meets. “I’m competitive, just like my sister [also a lefty] was in tennis.” Little sister’s most competitive match to date this fall was her taut battle with Deerfield junior Emily Casati, the singles cham-
pion at last weekend’s Glenbrook North Sectional. Casati won the first set, 6-4. Goldberg won the second, 6-4. The third set — also a 6-4 decision — went to Casati, whose parents, Michelle and Steve, played professional tennis, and whose siblings, sister Alexis and brother Chris, enjoyed decorated tennis careers at DHS. Most epic movies don’t last as long as that Casati-Goldberg encounter did. “Caitlin is constructing her points better than she did in her first two seasons with us,” Rudman said. Goldberg, in between her quarterfinal and semifinal matches at the sectional on Oct. 13, praised the advice and support she has received from her two tennis instructors, Chris Sheldon and Suhel Malhotra. “I’ve been fortunate to have been able to work with them,” said Goldberg, who helped the Giants (32 points) capture the home sectional title last weekend;
the team’s other three entrants — doubles champions Monique Brual/Samara Michael, singles player Lily Tiemeyer (third place) and doubles partners Halle Michael/Mia Logrande (third place) — also advanced to state. “Both pros,” Goldberg added, “have such a passion for tennis, passion for teaching. I’m tougher mentally. I am no longer fazed by little things; nothing gets into my head anymore. It’s now all about getting on the court and playing my game.” Goldberg has also been an invaluable teammate off the court this autumn, from the leadership she displayed before and during a team fundraiser to the time and creativity she put in for another team project (photo album). “She’s the best teammate,” Lew said. “Such a good person to be around … you want to be around her. She makes people feel good with the way she compliments them. “Our team,” she added, “would
The Trevians (16 points) tied Evanston Township High School’s Wildkits for first place at the Class 2A Niles West Sectional in Skokie on Oct. 13-14. Both of NT’s doubles teams — senior Amia Ross/sophomore Ali Benedetto and juniors Emily Dale/Claire Gottreich — qualified for state. Ross/Benedetto defeated Dale/Gottreich in the doubles final. LOYOLA ACADEMY
Ramblers senior Maggie Hines and junior Elizabeth Witkowski highlighted LA’s fourthplace showing (7 points) at the Class 2A Niles West Sectional last weekend, earning a statequalifying berth en route to a third-place finish in doubles. The pair topped an Evanston duo 6-0, 6-3 in the match for third place. NORTH SHORE COUNTRY DAY
The Raiders (22 points) finished runner-up to Northside College Prep’s Mustangs (25) and qualified three entrants to state at the Class 1A Vernon Hills Sectional on Oct. 13-14. NSCD freshman Claudia Miller netted runner-up honors in singles, two spots ahead of senior teammate Cara Savin. North Shore Country Day School juniors Alex Arenson and Caroline Lommer advanced with a runner-up showing in doubles.

An all-around good guy — and great gymnastics coach BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
T
he 100-year-old rocking chair inside the Foerch house in Homewood never had a chance against a young Doug Foerch more than four decades ago. The son of Dick and Barbara Foerch figured the piece of furniture would serve quite nicely as an apparatus to execute a gymnastics strength move. “Broke the chair,” a smiling Doug Foerch — now 55, a Deerfield resident and in his 33rd year in coaching and in his 35th year as a gymnastics judge — recalls after ordering a glass of water and pumpkin pancakes (with walnuts in the batter) at Rhapsody Café in Deerfield. “Dad,” he adds with a chuckle, “was kind of mad.” Doug Foerch, therefore, is kind of a successful coach. The Homewood-Flossmoor High School graduate and former top-notch gymnast at Northern Illinois University coached Mundelein High School boys gymnastics teams to six state championships between 1988 and 2001; helped Deerfield High School graduate Christina Loukas — a two-time USA Olympian — capture three state diving championships (2001-03); and guided Deerfield High School’s boys gymnastics team to a programbest third-place showing at the state meet last spring. “My coaching style is a combination of the one my father [who died at the age of 90, in 2015] had and the one my coach at NIU [Chuck Ehrlich] preferred,” says the 5-foot-8, 160-pound Foerch, who’s as fit as most elite triathletes are, thanks to a workout regimen of two hours per day. “My dad was soft-spoken, a gymnastics coach who’d put an arm around an athlete and say, ‘Let me show you the right way to do a routine.’ Coach Ehrlich was loud, much louder than my father and as knowledgeable as my father. But you wanted him to be loud, you wanted him to yell at times, because that
meant he cared about you, saw something in you.” Foerch, a PE/health teacher and a gymnastics/diving coach at District 113 high schools (Deerfield and Highland Park) since 2002, has been sporting a flat-top ’do for just about forever. It’s his way of paying tribute to his father, a World War II veteran who coached boys gymnastics teams at Thornton, Reavis and Thornwood high schools. Countless gymnasts under Doug Foerch’s direction have competed at big meets with a similar cut. The look is tight and clean and a not-so-subtle reminder of the discipline he expects — make that, demands — from his athletes. “In the middle of one of my practices, a gymnast left the floor and started to head toward his gym bag,” Foerch recalls. “I asked him, ‘Where are you going?’ He said, ‘To check my phone.’ ” Foerch’s reply, a nanosecond later: “No you’re not; get back here.” Foerch has never owned a cell phone. Has never … texted a message. “I don’t need all of the distractions that come with
old-school. I am tempted to clink water glasses with him. I think of a wedding. I then ask him how he met his wife, Jeanie. Foerch’s eyes begin to dance. “She was a business teacher at Mundelein [High School] when I started teaching and coaching there,” Foerch says. “We went to the school’s homecoming together. I guess you could stay that was our first date. We danced together, for only one dance, because we saw kids near the dance floor and noticed they were talking about us. I said to Jeanie, ‘Let’s get out of here.’ ” They got married in 1989. They have four children: Brock, 26; Cody, 24; Colt, 21; and Lexis, 19. Each adores math. Brock and Cody teach the subject at North Chicago High School and Zion-Benton High School, respectively. Colt and Lexis major in math at Trinity International University in Deerfield. Doug Foerch grew up in a household with five siblings — the late Jeff; Brad, 58; Steve, 57; Laura, 53; and Shelley, 52. T h e i r 88-yearold

Doug Foerch
became accomplished gymnastics coaches at Illinois high schools. “My father, my brothers … all were major influences when I was a kid,” says Doug Foerch, a member at Christ Church in Lake Forest since the early 2000s. “Gymnastics clubs did not exist back then. But we did gymnastics all year. It helped, with my dad letting us work out in the gym at Thornwood High School. During gymnastics seasons, I’d work out at 6 a.m., go to school, attend gymnastics practice after school and then work out some more at Thornwood after dinner. Going at it for seven hours a day wasn’t unusual.” Foerch, as a junior at NIU, made $25 each time he judged a gymnastics meet. He and other Huskies gymnasts traveled all over Illinois to earn the money. “We probably spent that much money on gas on those weekends,” Foerch, chuckling again, says. “You know what? That was a big deal, because it was a job, and we got to work with knowledgeable gymnastics people at a young age.” Decades later, Foerch hasn’t lost an ounce of passion for the sport, for coaching, for teaching. Deerfield HS graduate Heath Ogawa — now an AllAmerican men’s diver at Lake Forest College — won a state gymnastics title on vault with a 9.5 in 2015, his senior season. He hadn’t executed a routine until Foerch introduced him to gymnastics in his f reshman year. “That was a great moment, seeing Heath up there on a podium and smiling at the state meet,” Foerch says. “But sometimes the biggest reward of coaching comes during the regular season, when a kid either achieves a personal-best score or sticks a routine for the first time at a meet. I love those moments. I love it when a gymnast realizes all that hard work was worth it. “The look I enjoy noticing, more than any other, from a gymnast’s face … it’s the one that says, ‘Yes, finally!’ ”
