If you should ever be so fortunate as to meet Oscar-nominated actor Bruce Dern, ask him to do his spot-on Alfred Hitchcock impression. You won’t be sorry. Dern acted in two Hitchcock movies, Marnie (1964) and Family Plot (1976), as well as in Hitchcock’s 1960s TV series, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. At 84, Dern, who grew up in the Kenilworth and Glencoe area and graduated from New Trier Township High

School (class of 1954), continues to act on a regular basis that someone half his age may find exhausting. In his latest movie, The Artist’s Wife (Strand Releasing), Dern plays Richard, a renowned painter who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. His illness not only takes a toll on him, but also his long-suffering wife Claire (Lena Olin), his estranged daughter Angela ( Juliet Rylance), his students, and ultimately his talent. Dern, who came into his own in the 1970s as part of what was known as the New Hollywood movement, via his work with Jack Nicholson and Bob Rafelson, was kind

enough to answer a few questions, in very colorful language, before the release of The Artist’s Wife.

What was it about the character of painter Richard in Tom Dolby’s The Artist’s Wife that drew you to him as an actor? I didn't know who Tom Dolby was. I had heard of his father, Ray Dolby. agreed to do it was because it had a few interesting challenges in it. I felt that I wanted to investigate for myself, so I can make sure if I'm getting it when I’m getting it—I'm 84—I wanted to see what it would be like to not be able to gather things together or remember things or even get through a day without forgetting something. What intrigued me was that this guy forgot how to paint. He forgot his whole life. The challenge to me of the movie, which I think I ended up convincing Tom of, was he’s got me painting that white canvas with white paint in the studio, all through the movie. That’s because, I know that painting is not just from the heart, but you have to have an idea. He had no ideas. I had this suggestion and then we went through it. Later in the movie, he suddenly realizes there's nothing really left that he's remembering every day. My mind is cluttered with a bunch of stuff. So, he takes all the stuffing out of couch pillows and started throwing it on the canvas. Actually, the painting was more an installation than a painting. Right, it became a mixed-media piece. Richard paints which, like acting, is a form of creative expression. Do you also paint or play a musical instrument or have other sorts of creative outlets in addition to acting? When I was 10 years old, the people in my household felt that the best thing for Brucie was that he was in the way, he was a mess, he couldn't tell the truth, so let’s teach him how to play the tuba! So, I had to ride my bike from where I lived on the Glencoe/Winnetka border off Sheridan Road on the lake. So, I never learned. I took one piano lesson and didn’t get it. I’m glad you mentioned the people in your household. Would you please say something about them? You can imagine who was at my (family’s) dinner table. My grandfather Dern was Secretary of War. He had been the first nonMormon governor of Utah, from `24 to `32. In 1932, Roosevelt was elected and made my grandfather Secretary of War. My grandfather died in office, the

day I was born, June 4, 1936. My grandfather MacLeish’s brother was (the writer) Archibald MacLeish. The last 50 years of his life he was the Boylston Professor at Harvard. My biggest appreciation of people in life is people that get (stuff ) done. I was in a family of some folks that got stuff done. My godfather, my father’s law partner at Sidley Austin, was Adlai Stevenson. He ran for President twice. First, he was a Senator and then he was the Governor (of Illinois). He came to see me in Sweet Bird of Youth, a Tennessee Williams play directed by Elia Kazan, starring Paul Newman and Geraldine Page. Mr. Kazan was aware of all of this stuff in my family because he directed J.B., which was written by Archibald MacLeish. Throughout your career, you have worked with some amazing directors, including Patty Jenkins, Alexander Payne, Sydney Pollack and Hal Ashby, to mention a few. It’s particularly notable that you worked twice with Alfred Hitchcock (Marnie and Family Plot) and three times with Walter Hill (The Driver, Wild Bill and Last Man Standing) and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). What are the challenges and rewards of working with the same director more than once? I've always said I’ve worked for six genius directors in my career. Not in order of importance or anything, but they are Mr. Kazan, Alfred Hitchcock, Douglas Trumbull, Francis Coppola, Alexander Payne, and Quentin Tarantino. Everybody always asks, “Why those six guys only?” Who am I leaving out? I’m leaving out Hal Ashby, John Frankenheimer, I'm leaving out a bunch of really gifted directors. They ask, “What makes a genius

Scenes from The Artist's Wife. to you?” I said, “(What makes them) a genius is a director's availability on the set to any crew member at any minute to come up and be asked a question and give you an answer and not brush you off.” Steven Spielberg once asked me, “What does that entail?” I said, “I haven’t worked with you, so I can’t put you up there.” What it also means is that each one of them is a professor. They love to tell you how we got to that day and that moment. In your 2007 memoir Things I’ve Said, But Probably Shouldn’t Have,

I never worked with her, but I really like her, Christine Ebersole went to New Trier. Here’s one for you—these two guys were in the graduating class of ’39 —Rock Hudson and Charlton Heston! Also, Richard Widmark went there for a year, and Hugh O'Brian went there, too. In the senior class, when I was a freshman, was Anita O’Day, the jazz singer. My freshman year, the president of the senior class was Donald Rumsfeld. Do you ever have occasion to get back to the old neighborhood? I’ve been back. I did a couple of those autograph trade shows at the convention center in Rosemont. Finally, as both an actor and a father, what did

it mean to you that your daughter Laura won an Oscar for her performance in Marriage Story? First of all, when she got her first nomination for Rambling Rose (1991). Her mom (Diane Ladd, who co-starred in Rambling Rose), I think, are the only mother and daughter to be nominated from the same movie. Laura, her mother and I are the only family that have stars on Hollywood Boulevard. There are other families, but not mother, father and child. I said to Laura, when she was nominated the first time, “The win is the nomination; not the Oscar. Nobody is better than everybody else in any one year. The thing you have to remember is that you have a seat at the table for the rest of your career.” Rambling Rose was a wonderful movie and what's interesting about it is the first movie I did for Kazan, Wild River, was written by Calder Willingham, who also wrote Rambling Rose. Wow! What a small world. When Laura won, I didn't know anything about the movie. She told me one day she was doing a movie where she had to go after guys. She was playing a lawyer representing a woman in a divorce. I said, “Laura, if that's what you have to do, you have to do yourself a favor. You are always so nice to people. You are never condescending. Always rooting for the underdog and wanting to put an arm around them. You never rip anybody… This is the movie where you're coming out of that closet.” She said, “But Dad, you mean…” I said, “I mean me in The Cowboys (1972 Western in which Dern’s character kills John Wayne’s character). She’s going to make enemies. Yes! Or me going nuts (as a terrorist) in Black Sunday. She said, “You mean (go) that far?” I said, “Take it to the limit, but stay within bounds.”

VISION 2020 HADLEY CELEBRATES ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A VIRTUAL CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION ON OCTOBER 2. EDITED BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

In 1920, Winnetka resident William Hadley began teaching ‘braille by mail.’ Frustrated by the lack of services for the blind, he applied his experience as an educator to teach correspondence courses to others, like himself, who lost their vision later in life. With the help of Dr. E.V.L. Brown, a renowned ophthalmologist who was his neighbor, The Hadley Correspondence School for the Blind was born. A century later, Hadley continues to help people who are blind or visually impaired learn to read and write braille, manage everyday tasks, navigate a world only intended for sighted people, and master professional skills needed in their employment. Today, Hadley is the largest provider of distance education for people who are blind or visually impaired worldwide. Last year, the organization reached nearly 150,000 learners from all 50 states and in 65 countries. “Hadley serves all equally, regardless of location or income,” explains Hadley President Julie Tye. “Our distance approach allows us to be there with personalized learning experiences to help people with vision loss or blindness thrive in their homes, workplaces, and communities. And, Hadley provides these services free of charge because we never want cost to be a barrier.” 2020 is also a special year for Hadley because the organization has just launched a new learning platform. Due to age-related eye diseases, an estimated 5 million Americans will experience low or no vision by 2030. Hadley’s reimagined approach gives this growing population immediate access to the help they need to manage life with vision loss. It is free and accessible to everyone by logging on to Hadley’s website. “Very few nonprofits have been around for 100 years,” says Tye. “Hadley remains strong because it has continuously innovated and adapted to provide the greatest assistance.”

Over the last 100 years, the organization has remained true to William Hadley’s commitment to personalized learning. People who are blind or visually impaired often feel isolated; at Hadley they are part of a community where they can find assistance from experts and also have the opportunity to connect with others, like themselves, who are living with vision loss. Throughout its history, Hadley has greatly benefitted from the vision, leadership and support of the many North Shore residents who have championed its important work. This includes the Hadley Woman’s Board, a volun-

teer organization started by Nancy Jones, the daughter of Hadley co-founder Dr. E.V.L. Brown. In 1953, when the school was in a precarious financial position, she recognized that it “would require women, who keep their shoulder to the wheel.” In a 1989 interview, Jones, who died this past spring at the age of 103, recalled recruiting “unusually capable, bright,

charming, and well-organized women who knew how to get right to a problem.” Since then, the dedicated women of Hadley Woman’s Board have continued to support the organization.The board’s success has made it a special partner and financial cornerstone for Hadley. The group’s fundraisers include the Braille Holiday Card sale, a tradition since 1956. Unique artwork is created each year—with a message printed in ink and transcribed into braille. (This year’s card may be ordered online at brailleholidaycard.hadley.edu/) The Woman’s Board also holds an annual benefit. Over the years, these events have taken many forms such as dinner dances, casino nights, Kentucky Derby parties, garden parties, and art sales. This year, a formal dinner dance was planned to recognize Hadley’s centennial. However,“2020 has also given us the need for social distancing, so we will be celebrating Hadley’s century of distance learning from a distance as well,”explains Sara Ridder,Woman’s Board president and event chair. Now, the Hadley Virtual Centennial Celebration will be online Friday, October 2 from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. It includes a short program, live prize drawings and an accompanying silent auction that runs from September 25 through October 9. “We are excited to be able to expand the reach of this milestone occasion,” says Ridder, “There is no cost, and everyone is invited to attend!” To participate in Hadley’s Virtual Centennial Celebration, log in to donate.onecause.com/ hadley100. It’s a showstopper when you see it in the trees. A bird with a name you might not know, all red with black wings. And it does something strange this time of year. It becomes olive drab. Just as green leaves are turning red, the “scarlet tanager” molts from red to green. No one knows why. Then it flies away, to come back in spring. But more about that in a moment. What’s worth musing about is that something once bright can turn dreary. As we slog through some challenging times, social distancing, masks, remote school and work, we might think “c’mon, the colorful life we took for granted has turned into something else. What’s the deal?”

A school2life gallery tells a student ’s stories, from figuring out the path to straight-A status to the inspiration behind starting a wildly popular school club to the series of arresting artwork covering most of the fridge’s door in the kitchen. It’s a conversational vehicle, splattered with visual accents. Links to school2life galleries adorn students’ college applications these days. But one of N e w m a n’s favorite school2life clients was a sixth-grade basketball player who pivoted on his own one day—and the maneuver had absolutely nothing to do with a shift in direction on a hoops court. “The boy

Susan Newman’s spiral is better than yours. It must be. The Highland Park native whips a football to her father, Dave Gordon, at Sunset Woods Park in Highland Park up to three times a week. He chucks it back to his daughter. She uncorks another pass to Dad. And so on. It’s that touching, lumpy-baseball-inthe-throat father-child scene at the end of the movie Field of Dreams, minus the cornfield and baseball gloves. Kevin Costner’s character in the flick, haltingly: “Hey, Dad … you want to have a catch?” “I have a pretty solid arm,” Newman, now a resident of Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, says. Newman isn’t a seventh-grader or a junior in high school or a senior in college, but if she were any of those, she’d be able to spotlight her NFL-ready wing with help from school2life, an education agency born in 2009, and its digital gallery—a platform that allows students, from middle schoolers to collegians, to showcase their unique accomplishments, abilities, and experiences in and out of the classroom for eyeballs at the next level. The founder and chief education officer of school2life? She’s also a longtime marketing instructor at Columbia College-Chicago, which happens to be her alma mater. Goes by the name Susan Newman. “We’re bringing back ‘Show and Tell,’ ” says Newman, a career marketing and advertising professional, with stints at Leo Burnett and Make-AWish Foundation, among other posts. “Our job is to help students understand their value and then walk them through the storytelling process. The best and most effective way to sell yourself is to do it with relevancy, sophistication, and confidence. “I have the best job in the world,” adds the mother of two (Lane Tech students Alex, a 16-year-old daughter, and Zach, 14). “I don’t even consider it work. I get to help students and young adults recognize their value, capabilities, and potential. I get to instill confidence in them, sometimes as they’re just beginning to figure out their strengths. How fortunate am I? These wonderful, active students, they’re self-assessing and self-advocating at a young age. Why wait until college, or later, to learn valuable skills like that?” Say you’re an eighth-grader, aiming to get into a selective high school. Presenting a personalized yearbook, via Newman’s venture, for

recognized he was too advanced as a basketball player, and that he wouldn’t benefit much were he to continue to participate in that particular program,” Newman says. “So he decided to approach the coach before a practice and said, ‘I’d like to learn about coaching basketball. Would you be able to help me?’ The coach was blown away by the boy’s initiative. Wanting to learn to coach a sport became a part of the boy’s gallery. The fearless boy had taken a chance with the request, one that was received with excitement and some surprise and, ultimately, a ‘Yes.’ ” A digital gallery platform makes it easy for students to document events as they go. Plus there’s nothing wrong with acquiring marketing skills outside the classroom setting well before the first day of high school. Newman, the high school student, aced her Make a Winning First Impression course while working as a waitress at Kip’s Deli in Highland Park. She received zero credits for the course because it wasn’t an official class at Highland Park High School. It wasn’t offered at any school, actually. Her trusty pass catcher, also known as her father, couldn’t stress enough the importance of those first few seconds of an interaction with a new acquaintance. Or any hungry, sleepy customer. “Hey, at Kip’s I had to communicate with people at 6 a.m., before their first cup of coffee,” says the animated Newman, who, back then, also worked the Friendship Booth at Ravinia Festival and grew up to the not-farfrom-her-house sounds of that “Looks Like We Made It” warbler and occasional Ravinia headliner, Barry Manilow. “I took that seriously, taking care of diners, dealing with their various moods, staying positive at all times, following through, being relatable. Important stuff. Call it ‘street smarts’ if you’d like. Nobody teaches you those. You learn things like those on the run. Newman designed school2life Gallery, based on best practices from teaching thousands of students since 2001, to successfully market themselves landing internships, jobs and other growth experiences in education and industry. “We are,” Newman says, “our own PR, right? Think about college students today, as well as recent college graduates. They all have stories to tell as they near jobbound status, and some of the best stories span from a middle-school year all the way to that senior year in college. “So much in life is about communication, isn’t it?” Newman says. “Conversations are vital; they get things rolling, generate opportunities. Practical, actionable stuff. When I teach, when I work, I’m preparing students for what’s out there in the real world. I want, more than anything else, my students and clients to thrive in their pursuits. I love providing a platform for students to communicate their accomplishments.” Touchdown, Susan Newman.
