Our house was left in great condition. I highly recommend this company!”

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

ROSITA KRAJA grew up in a small, close-knit town in Lithuania, where everyone knew everyone. That sense of community shaped who she is today. From a young age, she was drawn to creative expression—drawing, writing, anything that let her tell a story. She combined that creative spark with a practical mindset and went on to study business and design in college. That mix of vision and structure became the foundation for everything Rosita has pursued since.

After college, she jumped straight into the freight and logistics industry. It was fast-paced and challenging, and she thrived in it. “Work travel became my passport to adventure—exploring Europe, taking cross-country road trips in the U.S., soaking in new cultures and ideas. Each destination added a layer to my perspective and helped me grow into someone who truly embraces change and possibility,” Rosita says.

These days, she is happily grounded in family life with her husband Ben, their two amazing kids, Sophia and Gabe, and their sweet, spirited pet, Sugar. Life is full and busy, packed with the energy of school runs, sports games, family dinners, and community events. Rosita loves being part of a town where people show up for one another. She genuinely values supporting local businesses and staying active in the community, and the beauty of strong roots.

Rosita ties her past to her present by saying, “Looking back, I can see how the journey from a small Lithuanian town to where I am now has shaped me deeply. It’s taught me that while dreams may carry us far, it’s the people and everyday moments that make life meaningful.”

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

Do you have a mantra? Rosita's sense of style shines through always “Grace over perfection.” Life isn’t always tidy, and I’ve learned to embrace both the beautiful and the messy parts. It’s a reminder to be kind to myself—and others— along the way. On your reading stack? I’m currently into Atomic Habits. The way it breaks down habit formation is fascinating. I also keep a novel nearby to unwind. Reading with Sophia is one of my favorite shared rituals— quiet, connected time with just the two of us. What organizations do you support? I’m passionate about youth sports, women’s business networks, and causes focused on mental health and education

access. These are the things that strengthen communities and lift people up. What is the area of expertise on which your group chat will seek your advice? Definitely logistics, business strategy, fashion fixes, and travel tips. I love helping people pack smart, style an outfit, or pick their next destination. I’ve always been the “ask her” person in the group. Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? Morning coffee is sacred. It’s that pause before the day begins; a warm moment just for me to breathe, reset, and get ready for whatever’s ahead. Music you love? Everything from timeless classics to R&B and indie pop. There’s always music playing in our house—sometimes dancey, sometimes mellow, but music always sets the tone for our day. Favorite summer tradition or activity? Grilling in the backyard is our summer rhythm. Add in evening walks, hockey practice, and our annual beach trip, and you’ve got my favorite kind of summer: simple, connected, and joyful. What beauty products are you loving currently? Right now, I’m loving a good vitamin C serum, cream blush for that natural glow, and of course, dry shampoo—because real life doesn’t always allow for a perfect hair day! Where is your favorite place to travel? Lake Michigan is close to my heart—so many peaceful, family-centered memories. And Italy has always been a dream destination. The culture, the food, the pace—it also has my heart.

WHEN IN TOWN WHEN IN COUNTRY

What’s your go-to outfit? A crisp white tee, classic jeans, a chic blazer, and boots or sneakers, depending on the day. Always with a great pair of sunglasses. It’s simple, polished, and always me. Is there anything you can’t leave the house without? My phone, lip balm, and a small notebook for jotting down ideas and inspiration throughout the day. Where do they know you by name?

Definitely at my favorite coffee spot and the hockey rink— those are my regular haunts, where the sense of community really shines. Have you participated in any local traditions that you’d love more people to know about? Yes! The neighborhood block party and the Hinsdale Christmas Walk are two of my absolute favorites. They bring everyone together and remind me of that same small-town feeling I grew up with. If an ad agency asked you to write a commercial for your town, what would you say?

“Hinsdale: where small-town charm meets big-hearted people. A place to plant roots, chase dreams, and be known by name.”

Do you wear any outfits or accessories that feel like too much for the school run but are perfect for the city? Absolutely! A statement coat, tailored blazer, or bold handbag might feel extra at drop-off, but in the city, they shine. Chicago has this energy that makes you want to dress up just a little, and I love that. I’ll pair those pieces with sleek boots or polished loafers and feel instantly in sync with the city’s vibe. What’s in your bag? My phone (always), a lipstick for touch-ups, and a charger—because nothing ruins a city day faster than a dead phone. View that never gets old? The view from Navy Pier at golden hour. Lake Michigan shimmering, the skyline stretching wide—it’s the kind of view that makes you fall in love with Chicago all over again. Best quick bite or hidden gem? Tortoise Supper Club is a classy favorite—elegant without being overdone. And The Aviary is pure magic. The cocktails there feel like a performance—I once had a drink arrive inside a smoky glass orb. Almost too pretty to sip (almost). Best beauty or wellness shop or provider? The Peninsula Spa is heaven—pure luxury and quiet. And for a quick wellness boost closer to home, Infusewell Concierge in Hinsdale is my go-to for vitamin infusions that make a noticeable difference. Do you have a favorite museum? The Art Institute of Chicago will always be a classic favorite—those Monet rooms are breathtaking. But I also love the boldness of the Museum of Contemporary Art. It surprises you, makes you feel something, and always sparks conversation. What’s your favorite movie filmed or set in Chicago? The Dark Knight because my husband Ben had his big moment as a prison guard extra! We always laugh and rewind when his scene comes on. It’s our little slice of movie history, even if it’s just two seconds of fame.

RAISING THE STANDARD

From a backpack to the rooftops, AK Roofing & Gutters built a trusted name from the ground up.

What began as a modest dream and a toolbox has grown to be one of the Western Suburbs' most trusted names in roofing and exterior house repair. AK Roofing & Gutters is more than a roofing company—it's a story of grit, community commitment, and a deep respect for craftsmanship.

Founded more than a decade ago by Kenny Nuredini and Ari Lluka, who shared a passion for quality work and strong ethics, AK Roofing & Gutters began as a small operation with big ambitions.

“We were just two hardworking individuals with a passion for quality craftsmanship and a drive to build something meaningful,” recalls Nuredini.

Taking on one roof at a time, their attention to detail and honest approach quickly earned them a loyal customer base. Today, they proudly serve homeowners and businesses from Hinsdale to Naperville and beyond, still holding on to the same values that sparked their mission.

Specializing in a full range of roofing and guttering services, they offer comprehensive services, such as full roof replacements, gutter installation, repairs, and ongoing maintenance. Over time, they expanded their services to include fascia, soffit, siding, and storm damage restoration, providing a true one-stop solution for exterior home maintenance.

One job that left a lasting impression involved helping an elderly couple whose roof was damaged in a storm and had been denied coverage under their insurance policy. “We helped guide them through the appeal process, got the claim approved, and completed the job without compromising quality,”

recalls Nuredini. “That experience reinforced our commitment to being not just contractors, but advocates for our customers.”

It’s this commitment to doing it right, regardless of who’s watching, that sets them apart. “We treat every home like it’s our own,” Nuredini emphasizes. By using the best materials available, premier craftsmanship, and an unwavering standard of communication, they pride themselves on creating outcomes that last and that customers can count on.

Their roots in the local community run just as deep as their commitment to craftsmanship. Not only do they give back by sponsoring local events and helping families in need—especially after severe storms—but they’ve also earned such trust that much of their work comes through word-ofmouth referrals. “We’re more than just a business, we’re your neighbors,” says Nuredini.

As for the future? Nuredini has big plans, looking to grow by bringing on more skilled professionals who share his dedication, investing in training and technology, and potentially opening new locations across the greater Chicago area. “The future is bright, and we’re just getting started,” he says.

“Whether it’s a small repair or a full replacement, your home deserves the best,” says Nuredini. “We’re grateful for the trust our community has shown us, and we look forward to many more years of protecting what matters most—your family, your investment, and your peace of mind.”

AK Roofing & Gutters is located at 17W300 W 22nd Street in Oakbrook Terrace, 708-575-4500, akroof.com.

Winning Windows

Local window fabricator and installer helps homeowners see clear benefits.

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Quality windows not only provide the scenic views, structural integrity and curb appeal that every homeowner wants, but also play a crucial role in a home’s energy efficiency and value. Replacing old, outdated windows, can increase a home’s energy efficiency by as much as 30 percent, reducing drafts, and eliminating leaks and mold.

With his manufacturing plant right here in Chicago and decades of experience replacing windows throughout the city and suburbs, Russell Armstrong, owner of Chicago Window Guys (CWG), knows the territory well. After thousands of window installations, Armstrong and his team understand the width and breadth of customer needs.

into your home!”

“We offer the best product, with the best installation at the best price, guaranteed!” says Armstong. “We do this through attention to detail, a transparent sales process, and attentive customer service. Plus, every aspect of our windows is manufactured right here,” adds Armstrong, “which lowers our overhead and ensures we get windows installed on time and at a much lower cost than our competition without sacrificing quality.”

As well, CWG offers a price-match guarantee and a lifetime warranty on all parts and labor, including glass breakage— unique benefits in this industry. “We don’t play the ‘Buy one - get one free’ sales game, which is simply a sales ploy,” Armstrong explains. “Our prices are always lower, for a much better product and installation.”

CWG's signature windows include the latest energy efficient technology including, Argon/Krypton gas fill, three coats of low-E silver, foam filled frames, and a non-metal spacing system to ensure windows will never get seal failure. “We build a barrier to keep your energy in and the elements out,” Armstrong sums: “ We can’t keep the polar vortex from coming to Chicago,” he quips, “but we can sure keep it from coming

All CWG windows are custom measured, and custom made. That includes everything from custom bow and bay windows to garden and projection windows. Expert installation is key. Says Armstong, “ You can have the most expensive window in the world, but if it’s not installed correctly, you are back to square one. That’s why it’s so important to use a company that doesn’t rely on sub-contracted labor.” CWG is one of the few companies in the Chicago area that uses its own crew, he adds. “So, we know exactly who is going to be in your home installing your windows to get the job done right, with no pointing fingers.”

As well, owner Armstrong makes all sales calls personally eliminating three-hour sales presentations, sales commissions, and high pressure “ buy now“ sales tactics.

“Throughout the years, we have built a solid reputation,” Armstrong concludes, “with happy customers who refer their friends and family, and don’t just become customers, but friends. If you are in the market for windows, we would welcome the opportunity to give you a free estimate and earn your business.”

DESERT SOPHISTICATION JOURNEYS

The Scottsdale Resort & Spa Completes $40 Million Renovation Scottsdale’s Newest Leisure Destination Provides Guests with Premier Dining & Wellness Experiences

On a frigid day in Chicago, I traded my snow boots for open-toed sandals and my winter coat for a bikini as I headed to sunny, warm Scottsdale, Arizona. With temperatures between 65 to 70 degrees and cloudless days awaiting, it was hard to believe that in less than three hours I would escape the winter blues.

As the plane touched down, palm trees swayed outside my window, and I could feel my heartbeat quicken with excitement. The entire plane, filled with passengers fleeing chilly Chi-town, shared my feelings of both relief and anticipation.

The drive to The Scottsdale Resort & Spa was a quick 20 minutes away. Of course, I had to enjoy the warm breeze through the open window of my car. My driver, a native of the

Zen Garden

JOURNEYS

area, giggled at me and said, “ You certainly are not from here, it ’s cold outside.” My response: “ Have you ever experienced a Chicago winter? ”

The Scottsdale Resort & Spa, part of Hilton’s prestigious Curio Collection, revealed its stunning $40 million transformation just in time for my visit. The property ’s historic charm now intertwines seamlessly with contemporary luxury, evident in every detail from the leather accents and intricately embroidered headboards to the hand-carved wood furnishings that pay homage to its Southwestern heritage.

The newly renovated Luna Spa welcomed me with the gentle fragrance of desert sage and the soft sounds of trickling water. My deep tissue massage awaited, but first, a whisper-voiced attendant guided me to the serene “tranquil room” for herbal tea. The lounge offered an array of healthy snacks – fresh fruit, nuts, and fruit-infused water – creating an oasis of calm. The treatment was exactly what my body needed, with my therapist skillfully working out deep knots. Afterward, I retreated to the spa's open-aired Zen meditation garden where birdsong and bubbling fountains provided nature's soundtrack. The rest of the spa proved equally tranquil. The next morning, I returned to explore the impressive 3,000-square-foot fitness center, complete with state-of-the-art equipment – the entire space truly provided rejuvenation for body, mind, and spirit.

Later that day, we decided to head for Camelback Mountain

for a hike. The resort graciously provided transportation in one of their SUVs, part of their guest service that covers destinations within a few miles of the property. Under bright sunshine and a mild 69-degree temperature, we tackled the less challenging of the two main routes – though it still left us breathless at times. The summit rewarded us with magnificent views stretching hundreds of miles across the desert landscape.

That evening, we began at La Fogata Kitchen and Bar with craft cocktails by the oversized fire pit, watching the sun set behind the mountains over McCormick Ranch Golf Course –pure magic. The culinary journey that followed lived up to the setting's promise. Chef Ken Anderson's modern Sonoran cuisine showcased local ingredients in spectacular fashion. The Mole Meatballs arrived bathed in a rich, complex sauce that spoke to the region's heritage. Homemade Gnocchi demonstrated the kitchen’s versatility, while the Braised Beef literally melted on the fork. Even the Wedge Salad elevated the classic with locally sourced ingredients and expert preparation.

After dinner, we discovered The Madam, a hidden speakeasy tucked behind a large bookcase in the game room. This

unexpected gem transported us instantly to the prohibition era. Our sophisticated bartender offered both a curated menu of craft cocktails and bespoke creations based on our preferred spirits. As someone fascinated by the Roaring '20s, this experience made our visit to The Scottsdale truly memorable.

The Social Boardroom provided a complete contrast the next day. This casual, welcoming lounge brought out our playful side with pool, shuffleboard, board games, and a golf simulator. Between rounds of simulated golf and soccer goal competitions, we enjoyed light appetizers and felt decades younger.

Walking the grounds revealed another highlight of the transformation: The Stillman Villas, an enclave of 12 two-story accommodations offering high-end finishes, enhanced amenities, expansive golf course views, and a private pool exclusive to villa guests. These spaces, accommodating up to 14 guests, would be perfect for family reunions or group getaways.

As our final day drew to a close, watching the sunset paint the desert sky in brilliant oranges and purples from Barnaby's Spanish-style courtyard, I realized The Scottsdale Resort & Spa had offered more than just an escape from Chicago's winter – it

had provided an immersive journey into the sophisticated soul of the Southwest, with an unexpected splash of speakeasy glamour. I was already planning my return visit, this time with my entire family in tow.

Athinagoras Kostakos, winner of Top Chef Greece, sets the menu and the vibes at Violí, LÝRA, and other leading spots around the globe

Winner of Top Chef Greece, Athinagoras Kostakos is globally known as the head chef in restaurants in Mykonos, London, and Malibu. Chicago and Oak Brook diners are especially lucky, as he is a chef-partner of LÝRA and Violí. The Greek ethos he was raised on permeates the menus and the warm spirit of hospitality in the air at Violi, where everyone who walks through the bougainvillea bedecked doors becomes very well-fed family.

The story begins in late 2022, when Violí opened in the space formerly occupied by Mon Ami Gabi. It was an immediate destination, with winter-weary diners falling in love with the island vibes. Like its big sister, LÝRA, Violí's name is inspired by an instrument, one often played by performers on the streets of the Greek islands. This is a small nod to a piece of nostalgia from the DineAmic partners’ travels to Greece throughout the years. The beautiful curves of the violin also inspire some of the custom art installations in the décor. A look around the dining room reveals sculptural wood-workings reminiscent of the curves, strings and bow of a violin will be a focal point.

“Greek food is sexy and popular all over the world because it’s healthy. We follow the island way of cooking. It’s lighter, with beautiful fish and vegetables prepared simply. I’m from Mykonos and this is how we love to cook,” Athinagoras says.

At a recent five-course dinner, Chef Athinagoras charmed diners with his soft-spoken demeanor and quick history lessons that informs dishes like perfectly grilled shrimp souvlaki.

Under Athinagoras’ direction, the menus have evolved to become an incredibly satisfying blend of nourishing and delicious.

“Food serves as a bridge to family, history, and culture,” he says.

Before serving sokolatopita, a dark chocolate cake with chocolate coffee custard, and brown butter ice cream, he joked, “In France, the pastry chefs use butter, butter, and more butter. In Greece we use olive oil, olive oil, olive oil.” The resulting bite is divine. With the success of LÝRA and Violí, expansion is a natural next step. Athinagoras and his partners are preparing to open a Naples, Florida location in the next few months.

Locals heading down for the season can look forward to a fresh menu inspired by Greek islands and Gulf Coast vibes.

Until then, visit taverna Violí Oakbrook Center on rotation for jetlag-free dinners that refresh like a vacation.

Wellness House Ball looks to the past, present, and future because caring is Timeless
WORDS

Thirty-five years ago, a dedicated group of people came together as they saw the impact of cancer on families and friends. Out of concern and determination, Wellness House was born to lighten cancer's burden through programs that support, inform and educate people affected by cancer – all at no cost.

In the beginning, programs were held in a small home in Hinsdale. This worked, but keen eyes observed that a larger space was needed. A passionate group of community members and volunteers worked tirelessly to build the main location in Hinsdale. As the need for cancer support grew, the community again stepped forward to build an addition to what is now called The Home of Hope.

“Last year we offered our evidencebased, thoroughly researched programs to 4,100 people.”

Through careful planning and ongoing assessment of needs, Wellness House’s programs have continued to evolve and are now more accessible than ever with over 525 pro-

Lisa Kolavennu has led Wellness House for 18 of its 35 years

grams a month at The Home of Hope in Hinsdale, online, and over 30 partner collaborations throughout Chicagoland. Stepping into Wellness House, the spirit of care fills the air. As participants enter for yoga or cooking class, one can observe the stress each person is carrying lift from their faces as they greet friends and caring volunteers. In an era of isolation, this is the most vibrant community around.

Lisa Kolavennu has served as Chief Executive Officer of Wellness House for 18 years. She is the longest serving CEO, leading the organization for half of its existence. “The sheer longevity of this organization is a testament to the people. Every idea for a program or project is met with volunteers and professionals asking how we can make it happen,” she says when asked about leading Wellness House.

“Last year we offered our evidencebased, thoroughly researched programs to 4,100 people. That’s here in Hinsdale, at satellite sites on the West and South Sides of Chicago, and online. We’re expecting to grow that number 31% to 5,000 people served. We can make those plans and work towards a bold goal because of the donors and volunteers of Wellness House,” Kolavennu says.

Every volunteer is important, from those who help with the Walk for Wellness House in early May, to those who staff the House of Hope, to those who bring the Wellness House Ball to life each Fall.

“We rely on the money raised at the Ball and appreciate every single person who attends or donates. We are especially grateful to our Co-chairs and their incredible committee,” Kolavennu says.

Wellness House Ball 2025 is chaired by Angie and Wes Breton and Carrie and Vijay Thangamani. Themed Timeless, the evening will bring the idea of past, present and future into the narrative.

Co-chair Angie Breton enthuses, “I’m especially looking forward to the Mission Moment. It’s always incredibly moving. While many of us support Wellness House because we believe in the power of its mission, hearing a deeply personal story brings that belief to life in such a profound way. It reminds us that our contributions aren’t just gestures—they’re acts of compassion that can truly change the course of someone’s journey through cancer. That moment always grounds the evening in purpose and connects everyone in the room to why we’re really there.”

Angie previously served a six-year term on the Wellness House Board of Directors. Like many supporters, she has a special connection to the mission of Wellness House. Her mother passed from the disease at age 45 when Angie was just eight years old. She says, “While my family was close-knit and leaned on each other, I often wonder how much lighter the burden could have been if we’d had access to the kind of programs Wellness House offers like support groups, nutritional guidance, family counseling, even summer camps for children affected by a loved one’s diagnosis. These services don’t just support the individual; they lift the entire family. What’s even more meaningful is that Wellness House offers all of this at no cost, ensuring equitable access for anyone who needs it, made possible by the generosity of our community and donors.”

Angie Breton and Carrie Thangamani

The Bretons and Thangamanis are leading a passionate group of committee members as they plan for what is sure to be an incredible celebration of the first 35 years and a glimpse into what the next 35 years will bring.

FIFTY YEARS, ONE MISSION

Candor Health Education Continues to Empower Students, Parents, and Schools—One Honest Conversation at a Time

WORDS BY TRICIA DESPRES / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD

As a lifelong Chicagoan, Barb Thayer will never forget the first time she walked through the doors of the former Robert Crown Health Center.

“I was ten years old, and I was probably part of one of the very first classes,” she recalls during an interview with Hinsdale Living. “Everybody remembers the carpeted stairs and that lightup human doll. (Laughs.) It was a rite of passage.”

Indeed, the Robert Crown Center – now known better as Candor Health Education – has served over 6 million young in the Chicagoland area since 1974.

“I think our 50th anniversary brought up a lot of emotions in people,” says Thayer, who now serves as Candor Health Education’s Chief Executive Officer. “I think people remember it so much because it was such a big topic that people didn't talk about.”

Certainly, there was a time when the very idea of sex education was a bit of a taboo subject, especially when it came to teaching it to school-age children. “Coming to a place where you talked about that just became a huge memory for so many,” recalls Thayer. “It was a huge part of your transformation into adulthood.”

Granted, no matter how much time goes by, the idea of sitting down for ‘that talk’ can still instill fear in the bravest of hearts.

“One of our educators once heard these little boys talking in a puberty class, and one boy turned to the other and said, ‘I'd rather be in the Hunger Games than be here right now,’” laughs Thayer. “It really is torture to them. But then when they're done, they always have said, ‘that was so much better than I thought it was going to be.’”

For Candor Health Education board member Eric Pitcher, the memories of that talk were far different –– especially since he grew up during a far different time.

Eric Pitcher and Brad Schmidgall serve on the Candor Health Board of Directors

“There's so many different influences that kids have to deal with now, especially with such an onslaught of media,” explains Pitcher. “It’s even more valuable now for there to be an organization such as this. It's a real service, and I think it’s important that the state government and local governments have recognized that.”

Not surprisingly, Candor has, in fact, expanded their emphasis on social and emotional health in recent years –– something that was especially interesting to Clarendon Hills resident Brad Schmigdall.

“We have two young daughters and we're not even there yet in terms of some of the challenges that are going to be facing us with them,” says Schmigdall, who joined Candor Health Education’s Board of Directors earlier this year. “But I have friends with kids that are older than ours and I know what's ahead of us.”

do offer sliding scales, and we do some free programming based on grant funding, but that's why fundraising is so important to us so that money can be offered in the form of scholarships for underresourced schools.”

“There’s so many different influences that kids have to deal with now...”

But there was something else that attracted Schmigdall to Candor, and that was the chance to help bring their vitally important programs to underprivileged communities.

“It’s these areas that might not have the parental influence that some of the communities around Hinsdale most certainly do,” explains Schmigdall. “These kids are not only learning from Candor’s educators, but they're essentially finding mentors. They're finding positive adult influences. And frankly, that seems to be something of a bit of lost art. Not everyone is getting that from home.”

“Not every school can afford our programs,” adds Thayer. “We

The ability to deliver their message virtually has not only helped reach more schools but has also allowed Candor to expand into states such as Wisconsin, New York, and Indiana. “It's a process to get them to know what we have and why we have it,” says Thayer. “But we are continuing to expand and to participate in nationwide conferences, so we're starting to get more relationships with people that have a profile on the national stage. Not every state has something like this and there are just some states in which people are not quite as open to it. So, it's just a matter of informing people and letting people know we're here.”

And while their plans are many, there is one thing Candor Health Education has no plans of changing “I don't anticipate us ever leaving Hinsdale,” concludes Thayer. “This is such a great location for us and for our educators to go anywhere they need to go. Plus, we have our roots here. It really is because of this amazing community that we've been able to be sustainable. We have a lovely endowment because of this community, and that keeps us going. It really does.”

A Debutante’s Diary

As the 2025 Hinsdale Assembly class heads off for college, third-generation debutante Molly Waldron offers a peek into some of her favorite events leading up the Ball

WORDS BY MOLLY WALDRON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCCLEOD STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR AND MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST

THE THREE-GENERATION TEA

Attending this tea was such a special experience, one that made me feel deeply connected to the women in my life and the legacy we share. Sitting beside my mom, grandma, my aunts, and my little sister reminded me just how lucky I am to be surrounded by so much love, strength and wisdom. Looking around, I was able to pause and reflect on the women who shaped me. Each of them taught me something important. How to lead with kindness, stay true to myself, and carry myself with grace even during hard times. This unique afternoon reminded me how those lessons have shaped me into the person I'm becoming.

With college right around the corner, this felt like the perfect time to step back and appreciate where I come from. I'm so thankful for the women who have supported me, believed in me and helped shape me. Their example means everything to me, and I'll take it with me into this next chapter and beyond.

VOLUNTEERING AT HCS FAMILY SERVICES

Volunteering at the food pantry through the Hinsdale Assembly was a deeply meaningful experience. Being there alongside the other debs and honor guards made it even better. It felt great to work as a team, all focused on helping other people in the community.

Helping, even in small ways, showed me how important it is to give back. I left feeling proud and happy knowing I had done things that mattered. It reminded me that making a difference does not have to be huge. Just showing up and being there for others can go a long way.

It's experiences like this that remind me why giving back is so important, and I hope to keep finding ways to help others moving forward.

SELF-DEFENSE PARTY

The self-defense class with the other debs ended up being one of my favorite Hinsdale Assembly events so far. It was not only useful and empowering, but also a fun way to spend time together. We laughed a lot, some of the moves felt a little awkward at first but that's what made it even better. It broke the ice and brought us all closer.

In addition to having fun, we also learned some important skills. It felt good to leave with tools that will help us feel more confident as we head off to college and beyond. Being in that padded room with all the Debs, learning something meaningful while also having a good time made the experience feel special.

It was such a fun way to spend time together, and I think we all left feeling more confident and comfortable around each other. We learned a lot and laughed a lot, which is the best combination.

Fore Her Future

There’s truth to the statement that making friends as an adult can be difficult.

Many women in the area defy these odds by developing deep, lasting friendships in Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC).

Over the last 75 years, HJWC has endeavored to enrich the community, the lives of its members, and their families. HJWC’s mission is to offer members a network of resources and opportunities, plus offer meaningful volunteer and philanthropic service.

HJWC has consistently been the first stop for women looking to connect with likeminded ladies and that’s certainly true for the influx of younger people moving to our towns in the past few years.

Longtime members offer guidance and insight while welcoming new ideas, which led the incoming leadership team to shake things up for Summer 2025.

“We are mixing up our event calendar this year and introducing two inaugural events to raise funds for scholarships and grants for local charities,” said incoming President Christine Gebauer.

The first event was the Ladies Who Lead luncheon at Ruth Lake Country Club.

“This event brought past, present, and future HJWC members together with other philanthropic and leadership-minded women in the community to raise money for grants,” Christine said, adding, “We created an event that allows guests to learn more about our cause and the impact of their donations, all while networking and enjoying a luncheon with friends and an expert panel discussion on women in leadership.”

The luncheon honored HJWC members and community

members who have made an extraordinary impact. Tina Weller received The Legacy Award for her ongoing efforts to do as much good as possible.

“Being a part of HJWC has enriched my life in countless ways. It’s been my honor to help in big and small ways to create positive impact on worthy organizations,” Tina said.

Members and potential members are encouraged to consider what their legacy might be, philanthropy, service, education, or leadership. For members like Weller, their legacy touches each category. “I love HJWC because we are a community of like-minded friends who care about philanthropy, service, and each other. What we do enriches the lives of those we give to, which lifts up our families in the process,” she said.

Next up is the Fore Her Future: HJWC Scholarship Golf Outing in early September. “This event will be open to the public, geared toward men and women who are interested in participating in a day of shotgun style 9-hole golf to help raise money for scholarships for local young women in their senior year of high school,” Christine said.

In the 2023-2024 year, HJWC awarded $15,000 in scholarships to four local young women pursuing higher education. This day on the links is sure to continue this fine legacy while also offering the chance for exercise and laughter.

Chaired by Kelly Dykun, Michelle Souza, and Amy Lohan, this sure to sell out day is a must-attend. “This is a chance for serious golfers and duffers alike to have some fun and raise money for young women who will go on to do great things,” Liz said.

Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club is accepting new member applications for the 2025-2026 year until August 22. To join or purchase tickets to Fore Her Future, visit hjwc.us.

TAILORED LIVING

When your home is envisioned and executed by the experts at Michael Bennett Homes, everyday living feels like a 5-star luxury escape.

TAILORE D LIVING

construction for his father’s company. “We’re designing homes to reflect our client’s lifestyle; homes that elevate the everyday into extraordinary living.”

Klein, an Indiana University Kelley School of Business graduate, launched Michael Bennett Homes (MBH) to fill a critical gap in the high-end residential market. His focus was to deliver turn-key luxury homes between $3 and $6 million that fuse architectural integrity with personalized elegance.

It’s not about status—it’s about how a home feels. “We want every space to feel like a retreat,” he adds. “A place where you walk in and it just feels right. We build for that emotional connection.”

ELEVATED EXPERIENCE

By uniting design and construction under one roof, Michael Bennett Homes offers what few others can: an integrated, startto-finish approach with complete creative control and limitless customization. “Because we’re the designer and the architect, we can offer high-definition renderings, extensive revisions, and more thoughtful iterations until we achieve perfection,” Klein explains.

Home is where the heart is, but when it’s designed by Michael Bennett Homes, it’s also where vision, grace, and exceptional living converge.

Imagine waking each morning in a home tailored entirely to your tastes, with the elegance of a 5-star luxury resort and the intimacy of your personal sanctuary. That’s the experience Airoom CEO Michael Klein set out to create when he founded Michael Bennett Homes, a division of the firm his father launched in 1958: Airoom Architects, Builders, and Remodelers.

“We’re not simply building houses,” says Klein, who spent his teenage years drafting plans, crafting furniture, and working

Their design process is immersive, intuitive, and often iterative. Floor plans aren’t merely blueprints—they’re lifestyle plans, adjusted and refined to support how a family genuinely lives.

One of the firm’s standout projects was a 7,500-square-foot modern farmhouse in Winnetka, built on an adaptive reuse concept. Salvaged materials from the previous home were woven into the new design, creating a home that was both bespoke and rooted in place. “It was an intricate project,” Klein says. “But the results speak for themselves.”

That same ethos now extends across the country. From coastal Florida to the Colorado Rockies, Michael Bennett Homes brings its distinctive philosophy to a national clientele. Each project is an opportunity to translate a homeowner’s dream into a multi-dimensional form.

TAILORED LIVING

DESIGN WITHOUT BOUNDARIES

In Miami Beach, the team was presented with a challenging, irregular lot. Rather than seeing limitations, they saw the potential—crafting an ultra-modern home design with an open-concept layout that included a lush indoor garden nestled beneath the staircase. It wasn’t just about maximizing space; it was about creating unexpected comfort.

“The client wanted natural elements, and we found a way to bring the outdoors in,” Klein says. “That’s what we do—we listen, and we innovate.”

A recent project in Aspen offered another creative challenge: design a sleek, contemporary mountain retreat for a client who entertained frequently and wanted uninterrupted views of the surrounding peaks. The result was both architectural and atmospheric. Massive glass accordion doors—some as large as 14 feet tall—blurred the line between interior and exterior, creating a seamless transition from social space to scenic backdrop.

As with many Michael Bennett Homes, this property featured wide, gallery-style hallways that doubled as entertaining spaces and display corridors. “You’re not walking through a hallway,” says Klein. “You’re moving with the flow of the home.”

Every detail—from the floor-to-ceiling windows to exclusive custom materials—was designed with the client’s lifestyle in mind. “We don’t build replicas,” Klein says. “Every home is different, down to the smallest detail.”

TAILORED LIVING

PERSONALIZED LUXURY

The firm’s approach to multigenerational and modern living is especially distinctive. Each floor of a Michael Bennett Home can be designed to function independently if needed, ensuring privacy and full comfort at every level.

“Couples, families, and grandparents—each have their own needs,” Klein says. “Our job is to create spaces where everyone feels at home. That takes more than just good design. It takes listening and ingenuity.”

Michael Bennett Homes is also known for its flexibility. Whether building on a narrow city lot, a sprawling mountain ridge, or a coastal bluff, the team embraces complexity and uses constraints as fuel for creativity.

And behind the design is a system: the firm’s proprietary S.T.A.R.T. process—System To Assure Resources and Timing—ensures that every stage of the project is methodically managed, with an emphasis on communication, transparency, and precision.

“It’s not just a framework; it’s our DNA,” Klein says. “Clients don’t want chaos. They want confidence. We deliver both design inspiration and excellent craftsmanship.”

With a core team that brings over 67 years of combined experience, Michael Bennett Homes doesn’t outsource its thinking or dilute its standards. Every element—from the architectural concept to the placement of a staircase—is handled with meticulous care.

A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS

For many clients, the decision to work with Michael Bennett Homes marks a turning point—an embrace of the lifestyle they’ve worked to achieve. Each 5-star luxury customer home begins with a simple promise: Everything to Imagination. Nothing to Chance.

“We’ll go through thousands of iterations behind the scenes until we craft the perfect home.” Klein says. “That’s not obsessive or excessive—it’s excellence.”

And what results is more than a home. It’s a personal legacy, handcrafted and built for your future.

“Luxury isn’t about square footage or price point,” Klein adds. “It’s about coming home to a space that inspires you, restores you, and fits you perfectly.”

“I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a great Realtor!”

I had a fantastic experience working with Casselyn. From start to finish, she was incredibly knowledgeable about the market and was quick to point out possible issues with each home. This was especially helpful as I was looking for a home to renovate. She consistently pointed me in the right direction and was often able to get me into homes before they even hit the market, which ultimately helped me find the perfect one.

Her communication was always prompt and clear, and I felt supported every step of the way. I’m so happy with the home I found, and I’m grateful to have had her by my side throughout the process. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a great Realtor!

DELIVERING DREAM HOMES

Chicago area native JOHN BERGER, Vice President and Mortgage Loan Officer at Green State Mortgage, has called Hinsdale home for more than 20 years. As a mortgage specialist, he has spent more than three decades helping individuals and families realize the dream of home ownership. “With access to multiple lenders to provide the competitive interest rates with extensive mortgage options, I make these dreams come true with unparalleled service,” says Berger, whose favorite pasttimes are skiing, golfing, and hanging out with family and friends. “I strive to educate my clients about the mortgage process and ensure that they have a positive experience throughout!”

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

The best part of my profession is hands-down, “closing day.” The happiness is evident with each borrower and to know that you helped make that moment a reality is very fulfilling.

What values or principles guide your success?

The “math” behind obtaining a mortgage is quite simple, however, there are many moving parts to the process. I strive to educate each buyer along the way and insist that they ask questions so that when they get to the closing, they are confident and excited.

Who has been the most influential mentor or role model in your life?

Easy. My Mom and Dad. The two of them together were wonderful role models and instilled in me the principles I carry with me each and every day

What’s a piece of wisdom you live by?

It might be cliche, but “be kind.” It is as simple as treating everyone in the same way you would like to treated.

FAMILY MAN & RELATIONSHIP BUILDER

JOHN BOURJAILY says a defining moment in his journey to becoming a real estate professional came at age 48, just as his daughters were starting college. “I decided to take a huge leap of faith and leave my family advertising business after 26 years,” says the @properties Christie’s International Real Estate broker, now 10 years into his real estate career. “It was the scariest and smartest decision of my life.” A Western Springs native, Bourjaily’s family includes daughters Caroline, Katie, and Anna, and son-in-law Rob. He and his wife Jennifer are empty nesters and have lived in Hinsdale for nearly 30 years. “On any given day you might see me jogging or biking through town, unless it’s during a Cubs game, in which case you’ll likely find me in front of the television,” says Bourjaily, who prides himself on being a passionate, driven, and entrepreneurial-minded real estate professional. An annual multi-million dollar producer, he has built an exemplary track record utilizing sound judgment, sales expertise, and business acumen, practicing “a relationship-oriented approach to all forms of client management with a continual emphasis on listening and learning.”

Who has been the most influential mentor or role model in your life?

Without question, my Dad. He taught me the importance of gaining the respect of my peers, employees, and clients. He was also the most nonjudgmental person I’ve ever known.

What advice would you offer to the next generation of leaders?

I work harder now than I ever have in my life but I absolutely love what I do. Find something you love and immerse yourself in it. Before you know it, you will own it!

What’s a piece of wisdom you live by?

In life, it’s not what happens to you but how you react to it.

CUSTOM CLOTHING SPECIALIST & STYLE

ADVISOR

AARON COMES began his career in Chicago, working for the world’s largest custom clothing manufacturer. “Over eight years, I developed a strong understanding of men’s style preferences and shopping habits,” says Comes, who launched Frederick Lynn in 2010. “Seeing a gap in the market, I launched Frederick Lynn—my parents’ middle names—as a more personal, refined menswear experience.” Equipped with a degree in marketing and textiles and a lifelong love of clothing, Comes launched the business in his garage. The first Frederick Lynn showroom opened in Chicago in 2013 and in 2021, he relocated the atelier to a historic location in downtown Hinsdale that had been home to Hinsdale Furriers for 70 years. “I was fortunate to partner with Melissa Waters, fourthgeneration owner of Hinsdale Furriers, whose knowledge and history with the building made the transition easier as we fully renovated the space,” says Comes. “Today, Frederick Lynn offers timeless style, personal service, and a curated showroom experience in the heart of Hinsdale.”

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

As a custom clothier, I’m not just tailoring garments; I’m shaping how someone presents themselves to the world. When the fit, fabric, and style align with who they are (or aspire to be), the confidence shift is real. I’m giving them something they couldn’t get off the rack: not just a perfect fit, but a version of themselves they’re proud to step into.

How do you strive to make a lasting impact on your industry or community? What values or principles guide your success?

Making a positive impact on the community is at the heart of what we do. Whether it’s preserving our historic building, enhancing the safety and beauty of our walkways, participating in local events, or opening our space to host special gatherings, being involved and giving back is not just a part of our business—it’s a core value and one of the main reasons we chose to make Hinsdale our home.

LEADING WITH PURPOSE

ADAM CHAUDHRY (RN, BSN) is a licensed registered nurse and top-producing real estate broker at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago-AC Diamond Homes LLC. With a unique dual-career background in health care, Chaudhry has worked with Fortune 500 companies and led skilled rehabilitation and health care sales initiatives—generating more than seven figures in annual sales. In real estate, he has closed over $20 million in career sales, with a strong focus on helping health care professionals find their dream homes. Known for his drive, integrity, and clientfirst approach, Chaudhry bridges the gap between compassion in care and excellence in service.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do? It’s not just handing over keys; it’s helping people reclaim stability during life’s most vulnerable moments. I’ve helped families avoid foreclosure, guided children through estate sales after losing a parent, and supported spouses navigating divorce. As a nurse, I was trained to meet people in crisis with care and clarity— and that same heart guides how I serve in real estate.

What values or principles guide your success?

I lead with purpose, loyalty, and long-game thinking. Every move I make is rooted in discipline—built from my nursing background, where life and health hang in the balance. That same urgency carries into my real estate work. I don’t chase commissions; I build legacies. My compass is internal, not external, and I believe in showing up the same way when no one’s watching.

What defining moment or challenge has shaped your journey?

The moment I chose to step away from the security of health care service—to bet on myself in real estate— changed everything. I started from scratch. No safety net. No inherited clients. Just grit, God, and a vision. That leap taught me that peace isn’t found in comfort; it’s found in calling. And when you’re aligned with purpose, there’s no ceiling to what you can build.

Who has been the most influential mentor or role model in your life?

My parents, hands down. They were immigrants who didn’t have wealth or connections but taught me that faith, hard work, and character are currency. They never gave me shortcuts; they gave me strength. That mindset has carried me through every win and every storm.

TRIUMPH OVER ADVERSITY

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices broker NICK DI BRIZZI JR.

is a proud first-generation Italian American. The youngest of three boys, his family hails from the small village of Sassano, Italy. “My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a passion for helping others,” says Di Brizzi, who followed in his father’s footsteps to pursue a real estate career. “My journey began at age 21 when I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream of becoming an actor. While navigating that path, I obtained my real estate license and spent over 22 years as an actor and a residential realtor.” Those achievements alone are impressive, but when you learn that Di Brizzi has been living with both Cystic Fibrosis and Type 1 diabetes through it all, his success is a triumph beyond compare. “Nothing came easy for me,” explains Di Brizzi, who founded the Breathe Like A Boss nonprofit to support others who share his struggle. “I am a double lung transplant recipient and also a kidney transplant recipient—thanks to my brother Dominic, who donated his kidney to me. My health challenges have shaped my life in profound ways, and I have turned my adversity into an opportunity to help others.” Today, he serves as President of the Breathe Like A Boss Foundation, which offers exercise and recreational grants to organ transplant recipients of any kind or people with respiratory illnesses such as Cystic Fibrosis.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

The opportunity to help people. My journey through my transplant experiences opened my eyes to the profound kindness of humanity. I received immense support during my most challenging times, which humbled me and ignited a passion to give back. I realized that nothing brings me more joy than assisting others in achieving their dreams—whether it’s helping clients find their perfect home or supporting an organ transplant recipient through our recreational grants and mentorship.

What values and principles guide your success?

I saw firsthand through my parents and grandparents that hard work and sacrifice pays off. Through their actions and teachings, I’ve been instilled with values of discipline, perseverance, and a “never give up” attitude.

What’s a piece of wisdom you live by?

I firmly believe that God places people and challenges in our lives for a reason. Trusting the process and having faith is essential.

LIGHT OF JUSTICE

JEFFREY J. KROLL, a partner in the Chicago-based plaintiff personal injury firm of Kaveny + Kroll, is an award-winning attorney who has represented injured victims of negligence throughout the country for nearly three decades in the areas of trucking accidents, products liability, and medical malpractice. Having secured more than $570 million in verdicts and settlements in his 35-year legal career, Kroll has had the distinction of being repeatedly chosen over the last 15 years as one of the Best Lawyers in America and one of the top Trial Lawyers in Illinois.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

On a daily basis, I am helping some individual or a family that has gone through a terrible, life changing event. They are often in a very dark place. It is nice to be the one that can eventually shed some “light” on their unfortunate, and often, sad situation.

What defining moment or challenge has shaped your journey?

I have been fortunate enough to have tried over 100 Jury Trials. Some large; some small but all are equally important to that individual or family. Having been a part of the largest compensatory verdict in Illinois history ($148 million), it reinforced my belief that I can do “good” for my clients.

How do you strive to make a lasting impact on your industry or community?

While I do not profess to be an avid camper, I am a believer in the ethics of camping—always leave your campsite better than you found it. Similarly, I am trying to leave this noble profession in a better place than when I came in. I have been fortunate to speak around the country more than 180 times on various topics and have published on over 150 occasions. It is my way of giving back. I have also taught at Northwestern and DePaul law schools I also enjoy being around fellow lawyers. I know that could be heresy to some but I generally like attorneys—especially the ones that care about our system of justice.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Long before PATRICK MAGNESEN opened Jonny Cab’s in Burr Ridge, he spent two formative years at West Point, ranking in the top 10 percent of his class. He took a detour between that chapter and starting his finance studies at UNC Chapel Hill to live and work at an orphanage in Tanzania, teaching English and ultimately summiting Kilimanjaro. After UNC, he joined Dell and, after finding success on their acquisitions team, launched a business software firm called Points of Light Solutions. “Seven years in, the tech world shifted, and a conversation with my father—my mentor and closest friend—sparked a new path to take the helm at Jonny Cab’s,” explains Magnesen, who serves as CEO of the restaurant and live music venue. “Since then, I’ve poured myself into building a place that brings people together through a worldclass dining and live music experience, hand-in-hand with my partner Gene Halleran.”

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

Seeing our staff bring their full heart to the table each night—and seeing that reflected in our guests’ joy.

What defining moment has shaped your journey?

The day my daughter Serafina was born. My wife Renata’s strength and patience through it all has reshaped the way I see purpose. They’re the reason I wake up every morning with a fire in my belly.

Who has been your most influential mentor?

My father, Scott Magnesen. A force of nature. His integrity, curiosity, and generosity are unmatched. He’s as wise as he is entertaining—ask any Jonny Cab’s regular—and his example lights the path I try to walk every day.

How do you strive to make a lasting impact on your industry or community?

We’re proud to be an independent, homegrown operation. In a world that’s increasingly transactional, Jonny Cab’s is a place built on connection—where guests can count on great food, amazing live music, and world class service.

DYNAMIC DUO

MATT LARICY and J MAGGIO are a real estate dream team. Laricy is a third-generation realtor with nearly 20 years of experience and a true passion for helping people find their forever homes. Maggio, a former futures trader at Chicago’s Mercantile Exchange and Board of Trade, has similarly been making a name for himself as a Hinsdale broker and resident over the last 10 years. As a native to the Western Suburbs, Maggio brings more than 16 years of experience and $20 million in average annual sales. Together, their collective awards and track record for helping clients know everything they need to know about the buying and selling process sets them apart from the rest.

What values or principles guide your success?

Matt Laricy: Hard work, discipline, and routine.

How do you strive to make a lasting impact on your industry or community?

J Maggio: I’ve been involved in coaching Hinsdale Little League, Devils Travel Baseball, and Falcons football for five-plus years now. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t run into someone that I’ve met through these activities or hear, ‘Hey Coach Maggio.’ It’s the reason we moved out here. For our kids.

Who has been the most influential mentor or role model in your life?

Laricy: My father, Bob Laricy, the founder of Americorp Real Estate. He’s the reason I decided to get into this business. My dad’s company looks a lot different than mine, though. Americorp Real Estate began in 1978 on the south side of Chicago. The office is still there, and it’s essentially a time capsule. Same furniture; same carpet. The gum balls in the gum ball machine have to be decades old at this point. Some of my earliest memories are of the days when I would go into the office with my dad as a kid. He worked a lot, and that’s probably where I get it from. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

What advice would you offer to the next generation of leaders?

Laricy: Knowledge is power. Sure, being good at sales and networking is good, but understanding the market is key. Whether it’s a good market or a bad market, consumers will always seek advice from experts.

GUIDED BY VALUES

For JOSEPH MOLFESE (G.G. GIA, C.G. AGS) of Bella Cosa Jewelers, the most rewarding aspect of his work is seeing the impact that the jewelry store has made in the greater Chicago area. “To see clients travel from sometimes an hour or more away, drive by literally 100 jewelry stores, and walk in my door is a testament to what we have built over the last 25 years,” says Molfese, a certified gemologist. “Receiving thousands of 5-star reviews is an amazing feeling!” He has been married to his wife and business partner, Amy, for 25 years, and they have raised their four children in Hinsdale. Molfese also gives back to the community and his colleagues by serving on local boards. In addition to his current roles as a Hinsdale Chamber board advisor and Jewelers of America JPAC board chairman, he’s a past board member of the Jewelers of America Board and the Hinsdale Chamber. “I have worked with some of our staff for 20 years, and they are the ones who provide an amazing experience that keeps clients coming back.”

What values or principles guide your success?

My faith and upbringing guide my decisions, along with the question, What would I want done for me if I were the client? Our business is a reflection of who I am; every decision we make guides the store to some degree, whether left or right, that ultimately lands us at a precise point in the future.

What advice would you offer to the next generation of Leaders?

Your ethics and values drive the bottom line, keeping you in business for the long term.

How do you strive to make a lasting impact on your industry or community?

We are constantly asking ourselves, What can we do better? Change is a constant for us, allowing us to improve for the benefit of our community, clients, and employees. We live and work in the community. The local community knows that when they spend their money here, a portion of that is reinvested in the community.

What’s a piece of wisdom you live by?

Life is easy. Just do what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it.

VISION FOR GROWTH

A proud native of Chicago’s Western Suburbs, DR. NICK RICCIO (DMD, PC) returned home in 2018 to purchase Hinsdale Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry. He and his wife, Dr. Susan Blair—a dual-board-certified pediatric dentist/ orthodontist—met while finishing college in New York and now run two thriving practices while raising their sons, Massimo and Santino. Dr. Riccio affectionately refers to Dr. Blair as “his better half” and “da real MVP” of their family. Together, they’ve created a purpose-driven practice rooted in community, collaboration, and growth—both personally and professionally.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

Being in private practice allows me to build something meaningful. I started a Masterminds study club to support and learn from other dental professionals with the mantra: network, learn, grow. I also love coaching patients through their smile journey—watching their confidence transform is incredible.

What values or principles guide your success?

I live by G-R-O-W-T-H: Grit, Responsibility, Work ethic, Trust, and Humor. I’m not afraid to fail, but I’d rather learn from others’ mistakes. There’s no losing in life—just winning or learning.

How do you balance professional success with personal fulfillment?

I make them synergistic. Everything I pursue personally helps me grow professionally, and vice versa. With an abundance mindset, I believe there’s limitless potential for development.

What’s a piece of wisdom you live by?

“Happiness is wanting what you have.” Real happiness isn’t about acquiring more—it’s about truly appreciating what’s already in front of you.

What advice would you offer to the next generation of leaders?

Be polite, on time, and work your butt off when you’re starting out—so that later, you can be a little blunt, a couple minutes late, and take more vacations!

AESTHETIC EXCELLENCE

Board-certified plastic surgeon DR. MICHAEL SALVINO (M.D., FACS) founded his Salvino Plastic Surgery practice in Hinsdale more than 15 years ago. Born and raised in Chicago, he completed his general surgery residency at Northwestern University and a plastic surgery fellowship at Loyola University. With extensive experience performing both cosmetic and reconstructive treatments, Dr. Salvino offers aestheticallypleasing results to his patients—whether they undergo surgery or a non-invasive treatment. A member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Aesthetic Society, he prides himself on professional relationships with patients that help them achieve their individualized goals.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

Combining artistic vision with surgical innovation to help patients realize their specific aesthetic goals. Every patient is different, each with unique anatomy and personal objectives. Similarly, plastic surgery is unique amongst other surgical specialties in that it relies more on principles of aesthetic surgery and less on surgical dogma. Each surgical case is individualized to fit the needs of that patient, which keeps each day invigorating.

What values or principles guide your success?

I live by the Golden Rule. I strive to treat every patient the way I would like to be treated. As a surgeon, the obvious function is to perform operations. Surgery is a very technical field but we should not simply be technicians. Another part of my job is to connect with my patients on a human level and make them comfortable in their surgical journey. It is a simple but common sense rule for life.

What’s a piece of wisdom you live by?

Do what you love and keep balance in your life. The old adage of finding something you love to do and you’ll never work a day in your life is true. I’ve been blessed as a plastic surgeon and truly love what I do. It is also important to find a balance as well because it is easy to be consumed by our passions. Harmony in your routine helps revitalize the various aspects of daily life. Striking a balance between work, play, and family also keeps life healthy, stimulating, and purposeful.

Salvino Plastic Surgery is located at 911 N Elm Street, Suite 216, in Hinsdale. For more information, call 630-929-6565 or visit salvinoplasticsurgery.com.

GENERATIONS OF BEAUTY

When SALVATORE SEGRETTO and his wife, Susan, opened the first Zazu salon in Hinsdale in 1979, he says the village looked very different. “The evenings were quiet, storefronts were closed, and not a single business open on Sundays. We were the only ones keeping our lights on at night, believing that beauty and self-care shouldn’t be limited by the clock,” explains Salvatore, who has since welcomed sons ANTHONY, SEAN, and MICHAEL to lead the family business and continue its storied legacy. “Years later, when Starbucks came to town and Sundays slowly came to life, we knew change had arrived. But through it all, one thing has never changed—our commitment to this community. For over four decades, Zazu has been honored to offer beauty services with heart, passion, and purpose.” Today, there are seven Zazu’s salon locations throughout Hinsdale, Naperville, Wheaton, the Gold Coast of Chicago, and Elmhurst, as well as one in Naples, Florida. The Segretto salon empire also recently launched The White Buffalo Barbershop “modern grooming experience” with locations in Hinsdale and La Grange. As Salvatore explains, the Zazu salon group has developed one of the most comprehensive and effective training programs in the business. “Over the years, hundreds of stylists have come through our program—many of whom have gone on to build incredibly successful careers, both within Zazu and beyond. Our commitment to education and excellence is the cornerstone of our culture,” he adds. “We don’t just train for technical skill—we mentor, we inspire, and we instill the discipline and passion that this industry demands. That dedication is reflected in our continued success and the proof is in the results. Zazu is proud to be L’Oréal’s number one account in the country. It’s a direct reflection of the strength of our team, the depth of our training, and our unwavering commitment to elevating the beauty industry.”

Who has been the most influential mentor or role model in your life?

Anthony Segretto: My parents. They built our family business from the ground up with grit, integrity, and a deep sense of purpose. They didn’t just teach my brothers and I how to run a business. They showed us how to lead with heart, treat our staff with respect, and hold the line on standards.

Michael Segretto, Salvatore Segretto, Sean Segretto, Anthony Segretto
“Never give up because eventually everyone else does.”

Michael Segretto: My father’s extensive leadership experience and profound wisdom have been instrumental in the growth and transformation of Zazu from a single location into a leading success story within the salon industry.

Sean Segretto: I’ve seen my parents face challenges—both at home and in business—with courage and grace. Whether it was staying up late to help with homework or navigating the stresses of entrepreneurship, they never gave up, even when our mom was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 60. Their ability to pour so much of themselves into both our family and their dream has shaped who I am, and I carry their example with me every day.

Salvatore Segretto: My wife, Susan’s unwavering positivity and strength have been the foundation of both my personal life and the success of Zazu. Throughout the inevitable challenges that come with building and growing a business, she remained my rock—steady, encouraging, and always believing in me, even when I struggled to believe in myself.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

Sean: For me, it’s about more than just hair—it’s about changing lives and shifting the way people see this industry. At Zazu Salons and White Buffalo Barbershop, we’ve created something special. I’ve watched team members grow into confident, successful professionals who are able to support their families, buy homes, and live full lives—often working just four days a week. That’s something I love sharing, because it breaks the old stereotypes and shows what’s truly possible in this field.

Anthony: Whether it’s a stylist building confidence behind the chair, a manager stepping into leadership, or a client leaving feeling seen and beautiful, nothing is more rewarding than witnessing transformation through trust, education, and service.

Michael: Life is meant to be shared—we get to do that each and every day making people feel their best.

PRINCIPALS

BAUMERT LAW LLC

Founded by Aggie Baumert alongside husband and partner Michael Baumert, the team at Hinsdalebased Baumert Law helps clients navigate life’s major milestones, both personal and professional. “We offer a highly individualized approach to both family and business law services. Our family law practice extends to all manners of law that impact families and loved ones including the growing interest in surrogacy and gestational carrier law, as well as divorce, domestic violence, adoption, and child custody matters,” says Aggie. “We also offer estate planning and real estate law services. Our business and IP law practice extends from sole proprietors to global businesses with relevant and timely services including but not limited to compliance, liability, employment, tech and intellectual property matters.” They say one of the biggest misconceptions about family law is that it will be a long, unpleasant process. “It doesn’t have to be combative at all. As lawyers, it’s our job to set a plan for our clients,” says Michael. “With focus and dedication, we can meet all parties’ needs in a sensitive yet efficient manner, accomplishing goals with less time tied up in court.” He says both he and Aggie felt a “calling” to practice law and help others. “Aggie has always been passionate about journalism and providing a voice and hope where people need it,” explains Michael. “So many of our clients come from diverse cultural backgrounds, many first-generation Americans with unique and valued perspectives. Treating our clients with respect and guiding them through the legal system is something that is not only crucial to their success but validating for us as professionals.” The couple also believes in being active in the communities they serve, volunteering their time and talent whenever possible. Michael has been a member of numerous professional organizations and Aggie is a proud member of the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club. After watching how hard her own parents worked to build a life when they moved to America, Aggie is determined to pay that vision for success forward. “The power of education, and leveraging that knowledge of the legal system, is a way to pass along that dream to others,” she adds. “We both work to create a path to positive outcomes for our clients. We envision a future where our daughter sees that hard work and giving back matters.”

JANET BOYLE

FOUNDER & PRINCIPAL FAMILY LAW SOLUTIONS, P.C.

Janet Boyle, Founder and Principal of Family Law Solutions, says that after decades of representing both the rich and not so famous through everything from domestic violence to milliondollar custody fights, she realizes that for most people, divorce is just a blip on the radar of their lives. “When all is said and done, the children grow up, the house they fought so hard to keep is empty and sold, and the healthy people move on to new and better partners,” says Boyle, who began her career as an Assistant Cook County Public Defender. “Watching this happen can be rewarding, melancholy, funny, or sad. I have had a long professional career of being able to observe the best and the worst in human nature.” She’s built a specialty in family law with a special expertise in tax issues, harnessing her graduate degree in taxation during cases that involve complex asset division. Through it all, she’s with each of her clients during pivotal moments in their lives, strategically guiding them with empathy. “There is a common misconception that family law is nasty and negative. I try to change that,” she says, adding that another thing she’d like to change about the system is the implementation of minimum requirements to ensure judges are more qualified to deliver decisions that can often be life changing. “Some judges are just lawyers who are looking for a 9 to 5 job or a pay raise because they are not particularly successful. It is not always a desire to serve that prompts many to seek this office.” One of the organizations she’s passionate about supporting is WINGS, a nonprofit group that provides resources to end the cycle of domestic violence. “WINGS and other groups struggle to have judges comprehend that the charming abuser in front of them is abusive and that the victim who appears to be fragile with maybe some mental health issues is this way because of the abuse. To place the children with the abuser is continuing the cycle,” adds Boyle, who serves as a WINGS board member. “I have seen the abuse from all sides and I have seen what recovery from abuse looks like. It is magical.”

LEONIDAS L. BEZANIS II

PARTNER

BEERMANN LLP

Growing up in a close-knit Greek-American family in Hinsdale, Leonidas L. Bezanis II was raised to value loyalty, advocacy, and standing up for others. “Becoming a lawyer felt like a natural extension of that,” says Bezanis, who was recently promoted to partner at Beermann LLP. “I specialize in family law, with a focus on highly complex divorce and custody matters. I was drawn to this area because it blends strategy, advocacy, and real human connection—no two cases are the same, and the stakes are deeply personal.” Whether representing high-net-worth individuals, high-profile clients, or families facing life’s challenges, he approaches each case with the same dedication—ensuring that every client feels understood and supported. “People often think family law is purely emotional, but it’s actually highly complex,” he explains. “There’s a deep strategic element, especially in financial and parenting matters, and it requires both legal precision and emotional intelligence.” From financial estates to parenting and custody disputes, that strategic mindset and empathy make him a trusted advocate for clients from all walks of life.

“You can be the sharpest person in the room, but if you don’t understand your client’s goals or where the other side is coming from, you’re flying blind,” adds Bezanis, who has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America annually since 2021.

“I love helping people rebuild during one of the most difficult times in their lives.” He believes in giving back to the community he loves and organizations that resonate with his values, including veterans’ initiatives in honor of his grandfather, who fought in the Korean War. He works to build long-term relationships with his clients centered around trust, responsiveness, and transparency. “People come to me at a crossroads, and I want them to know I’ve got their back, start to finish,” he says. “As I continue building my practice, I’m excited to serve more families from the community that shaped me.”

COLLEEN M. BREEMS

PARTNER

BEERMANN LLP

From the outset of her legal career, Colleen M. Breems has been fiercely committed to matrimonial and family law, known for her relentless advocacy and proven track record of securing strong outcomes for clients when it matters most. While clients are often drawn to Breems for her formidable courtroom expertise, her work is ultimately driven by heart, compassion, and a deep commitment to those she serves. “It’s a privilege to meet clients at one of the most challenging moments in their lives and, through our work together, guide them to a place of strength and stability,” says Breems, a Divorce and Family Law Partner at Beermann LLP. “Few things touch me more deeply than hearing from the children I’ve represented during these tough times—their happy updates and milestones mean the world to me. Each of them carries a piece of my heart.” In fact, fighting for the rights of children is what initially inspired Breems to become a lawyer, and she is one who wears many hats. In addition to being an expert litigator, she is trained in collaborative divorce and is a trained mediator. In addition, she frequently serves Cook County as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL), Child Representative, or parent coordinator. “I’ve always been drawn to working with those who need a strong advocate during the most vulnerable times in their lives—from victims of domestic violence to children caught in the middle of family law disputes. Giving a voice to those who might not otherwise be heard isn’t just something I love; it’s something I feel called to do. Becoming a family law attorney was a natural path for me, and advocating for children has been my true purpose. I can’t imagine doing anything else.” In addition to her passion for helping others in her legal work, Breems is active in giving back to her community, including through her work with the Junior League of Chicago, Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, Chicago Bar Association, Illinois Bar Association, and DePaul University College of Law.

TIMOTHY J. CAVANAGH, STACEY FEELEY CAVANAGH, MICHAEL J. SORICH

CAVANAGH SORICH LAW GROUP

“We’re empathetic to our clients, and we’re going to do everything we can to get them the justice they deserve,” says Timothy J. Cavanagh, founding partner of Cavanagh Sorich Law Group.

That sentiment has defined his nearly 40-year legal career. A nationally recognized trial attorney, Cavanagh has represented victims in catastrophic injury, medical malpractice and wrongful death cases. Since launching Cavanagh Sorich Law Group in 1997, the firm has obtained more than $800 million in verdicts and settlements and in the last year alone, secured more than $55 million.

“Our clients come to us often at the worst moment in their lives,” says Cavanagh. “When I founded this firm, my goal was to always be there for our clients. I am involved in every case our firm takes on.”

Recent notable results include a record-setting $50 million Federal Employers Liability Act railroad settlement for a young man catastrophically injured in a Chicago rail yard; a $27 million settlement on behalf of the families of two young adults killed in a truck crash; and a $12.5 million settlement for an Illinois man who suffered a disabling stroke after being taken off a critical medication.

This year, Cavanagh became president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association which represents more than 2,000 members. “I have served on the Board of Managers for over 25 years, the Executive Committee since June of 2014, and am honored and excited to be President,” says Cavanagh, who has been a longtime leader within the state’s legal community.

Located in downtown Chicago, Cavanagh Sorich Law Group is a small boutique firm with big firm resources and results. The firm has a team of award-winning litigators and because of its great success, it has the resources to invest significantly in every case it litigates.

Some of firm’s cases have prompted public policy and law changes. Cavanagh and partner Michael J. Sorich obtained a $20 million settlement from the City of Chicago, exposing a long-standing “code of silence” within the Chicago Police Department. After an off-duty police detective with a history of alcohol-related incidents killed two men in a drunk driving crash, the lawyers’ discovery of previously undisclosed evidence compelled the city to acknowledge its systemic failure. The case marked a turning point in how law enforcement liability cases are litigated.

“We enjoy taking on challenging cases we believe in and taking them to trial. Knowing that I am with the client through their entire legal journey provides me with great personal satisfaction,” says Sorich. “We never want to grow so big that we lose the ability to be close to our clients.”

Cavanagh’s wife Stacey Feeley Cavanagh is also a partner at the firm. Together they have six children.

“The fact that Tim and I are married and raising a family together is often an ice breaker when clients first meet us. It creates a bond, and we treat our clients like family,” says Stacey Feeley Cavanagh. “They know they can contact us 24/7 and they do.”

All the lawyers at Cavanagh Sorich are active leaders in educational, professional, and philanthropic organizations.

KATHRYN HOMBURGER MICKELSON

EQUITY PARTNER

BEERMANN

LLP

Known for her thoughtful and straightforward approach to family law, Kathryn “Katy” Homburger Mickelson, has distinguished herself among her peers by identifying her individual client’s goals and then drawing on her extensive experience to bring strategic and empowering representation to each case. “I not only get the honor of advocating, but I get the privilege of listening,” says Mickelson, a seasoned litigator and certified mediator who’s been a Divorce and Family Law Equity Partner with Beermann LLP for two decades. “I learn from my clients every day, whether it’s about a new industry or perspective.” By looking at family law issues pragmatically, she crafts strategies that will result in resolution that is efficient, expeditious, and drama-free. “Family law is not about the attorney and what they have to say; it’s about the client and their situation and how we can best explain and advocate,” says Mickelson, a University of Michigan and Chicago-Kent College of Law graduate. “Clients want success but they also want a realistic viewpoint on what is possible.” A North Shore native who lives in Park Ridge with her husband, two children, and the family’s English Mastiff and miniature English Cream Dachshund, Mickelson was drawn to the legal field because she wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. Prior to starting law school at age 29, Mickelson worked as a public relations executive. She joined Beermann between her second and third year of law school and never looked back. “What I have learned since becoming a lawyer inspired me to continue—that you can educate and empower people to make smart decisions and change the course of their lives,” she explains. Mickelson is also a tireless advocate for working mothers everywhere. “Being a working mom and raising humans of our own takes a tremendous amount of work outside of our other jobs and I strive hard to not only remember that but give kudos to the moms working on my team and in my firm,” she says, adding that when her children gave her a list of things they love about her for Mother’s Day, none of the items were material. “They were all about teaching valuable lessons, being there for them unconditionally, and spending time with them. Even when my days are hard, I’ve at least done well by these small humans. It’s nice to remember.”

JONATHAN MEREL

FOUNDER AND MANAGING PRINCIPAL MEREL FAMILY LAW

Jonathan Merel’s firm, Merel Family Law, specializes in all aspects of family law proceedings, serving as an advocate to help clients get through one of the most difficult chapters of their lives. “Beyond the divorce itself, there’s the restructuring of families that needs to happen. There’s making sure people don’t walk out of a courtroom worse off than when they walked in. Too many attorneys forget that,” says Merel, who built his stellar reputation by obtaining superb outcomes for his clients in multi-million-dollar marital estates and contested custody suits. In keeping with that philosophy, he took a groundbreaking step by hiring a full-time in-house Divorce Coach to provide clients with emotional support alongside legal advocacy. “It’s a trailblazing hire in the family law industry, and we are thrilled to be on the cutting edge, further bolstering our ability to provide top-notch support to the families of Chicagoland,” says Merel. Since founding his firm in 2009, Merel Family Law has flourished into one of the premier family law firms in Illinois. Always committed to his clients and their causes, Merel’s philosophy is to build strong, trusting relationships that are founded on compassion, sound legal strategy, and communication. Known as a skillful and aggressive negotiator with strong tenacity, he has an impressive track record of protecting his client’s best interests and helping them meet their legal goals. “I got into family law because I realized most people facing these issues need someone who won’t sugarcoat reality,” says Merel, a thought leader in family law who has been featured on the Today show as well as the Wall Street Journal, Crain’s Chicago Business, and many top-rated podcasts. “I’ve built my firm and my reputation by saying the things most lawyers are too afraid to say.” When settlement is not a viable or reasonable option, Merel’s experience as a zealous courtroom litigator has produced outstanding results. If he could change one thing about the legal system, he says there would be fewer games and less theatrics just for the sake of draining clients’ bank accounts.

ALLYSON RUSSO

OWNER

RUSSO LAW OFFICES LLC

Allyson Russo’s interest in proactive problem solving is part of what prompted her to become an estate planning attorney. “Estate planning allows me to help individuals and families navigate important decisions with clarity and confidence,” says Russo, who holds a B.A. from Boston College, a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, and an LLM from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. “I find fulfillment in creating personalized plans that bring peace of mind, knowing that my clients are prepared for the future and that their wishes will be honored. It’s rewarding to offer both practical solutions and a sense of security during what can often feel like an overwhelming process.” With offices in Hinsdale and Hoffman Estates, her Russo Law Offices LLC specializes in estate planning and probate—a niche of the legal industry she says is so misunderstood it can lead people to delay or avoid it altogether. “Anyone with assets—or dependents—can benefit from having a clear plan. People often believe that a will alone is sufficient; in reality, effective estate planning may include trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives,” explains Russo, who’s been practicing law for 25 years. “People also often believe estate planning is only about distributing assets after death, but it also addresses incapacity and medical decisions during one’s lifetime. Finally, many assume it’s a one-time task, but estate plans should be updated regularly to reflect life changes.” One of the most valuable lessons she’s learned in her legal career is to approach every client with empathy; not judgment. “Legal issues often arise from deeply personal and complex family situations, and it’s the lawyer’s role to provide support and guidance—not to criticize. I understand that every family is unique and deserves respect,” she adds. “Creating a safe, nonjudgmental space allows clients to be open and honest, which is essential for effective legal representation.”

KAREN M. SCHETZ

PARTNER

STEINER HOWETH PASQUESI & HATCH LTD.

Karen M. Schetz, a partner with Steiner Howeth Pasquesi & Hatch Ltd. (SHPH), is committed to serving her clients with prompt communication, honest legal advice, and compassion during what is often one of the most stressful times of their lives. Schetz handles cases both in and out of the courtroom depending on the nature of the case and parties. “Marital resources can be preserved and conflict reduced via alternative dispute resolution such as mediation. However, cases are not one size fits all and I also have extensive litigation and courtroom experience when out-of-court settlements are not possible or do not serve my clients’ best interests,” says Schetz, who graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A., in Psychology and received her law degree from DePaul University College of Law. “It is very rewarding to work with individual clients and see them through to ‘the other side’ of their divorce or other family law matters.” Schetz has been practicing matrimonial law exclusively since 2006, working for one of the nation’s largest matrimonial law firms for the majority of that time prior to joining SHPH. “During my lengthy career in family law, I have worked on complex cases and gained unparallelled experience in all aspects of divorce and post-divorce matters—from the division and characterization of assets, tracing of assets, income analyses, sophisticated support issues for families with substantial lifestyles, and resolving high conflict parenting disputes,” she adds. “I am also highly experienced with drafting prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.” If she could change anything about the legal system, Schetz says there would be less crowded court calendars and less wait time for substantive court proceedings. “It pains me to tell a client, ‘I presented that very important motion on your behalf, but the judge’s calendar is swamped and our hearing date is three and a half months from now’,” she continues. “In my cases, we are dealing with individuals—their financial needs, their children. There is often fear of the unknown as they go through this process and they want prompt answers and resolution.” That is, after all, the ultimate goal. Schetz comments, “When a client gives me a heartfelt thank you after their divorce is complete or tells me they feel so much better at the end of a phone call or after working our way through a series of issues, those are the moments I work for.”

Karen Schetz handles family law matters in Cook, DuPage, and Lake Counties. For more information, visit lakeshorelawyers.com/schetz.

NADIA SHAMSI

OWNER

SILA FAMILY LAW LLC

Nadia Shamsi, owner of Sila Family Law, helps people reclaim their sense of self during some of the hardest moments in their lives. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see clients walk out of my office feeling empowered, hopeful, and ready for their next chapter,” says Shamsi. “That transformation is very meaningful to me.” With legal expertise that ranges from complex high-asset divorces, post-decree modifications and enforcement, contested parentage cases, custody and visitation issues, grandparent visitation, maintenance and child support, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, and orders of protection, Shamsi has been recognized as a Rising Star by the American Institute of Legal Advocates and named an Emerging Lawyer four years in a row. She credits her success to an ability to meet every client where they are. “I listen more than I speak in the beginning, because I want to understand not just the facts of their case, but who they are and what matters most to them,” explains Shamsi. “I’m candid, compassionate, and fiercely protective of their goals. I want every client to know they are seen, heard, and backed by someone who genuinely cares about their outcome.” She channels that same level of empathy into her volunteer work, aligning herself with nonprofits that support women and children in crises. “These organizations constantly remind me why I do what I do,” says Shamsi, adding that her most rewarding philanthropic role was being the fundraising co-chair of Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club a few years ago. She’s also currently serving on the Advisory Board of Hopeful Beginnings of St. Mary’s and works with other small business owners through the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce. One of the most valuable lessons Shamsi has learned throughout her legal career is that sometimes people don’t just need an attorney—they need someone who truly hears and understands them. “Family law is deeply personal, and every client comes to me at a vulnerable crossroad in their life,” she adds. “Listening with empathy and advocating with strength can make all the difference in how someone moves forward. The law is about rules, but practicing it well is about strategy and humanity.”

Seniors and Vaccinations

Navigating Health Insurance as a Senior

Selecting a health insurance plan is no easy task.

SWThings Metal with POWDER COATING

ith COVID-19 and its vaccine protocol behind us, I felt it is equally important to discuss the other recommended vaccinations for adults. In our senior population treated by Hansa Medical Groupe, prevention is imperative for improved outcomes.

eniors turning 65 typically turn to Medicare for their insurance needs. However, with the advent of Advantage plans, there are more choices than ever. This can be difficult to navigate and understanding the differences, leading to the best choice for an individual.

The other vaccinations include Influenza, Tetanus, Varicella, Zoster or Shingles, and Pneumococcal.

• Repairs & Welding

First the basics

Varicella

allows for the most cost-effective option, but limits where you can go for your care. PPOs provide greater flexibility, but your premium could be higher.

Deductibles

Most adults of this generation were vaccinated as a child with Tdap. An initial vaccine can be given at any adult age. A two-dose series is allowed to any adult not vaccinated prior. It is contraindicated in pregnancy and severe immunocompromising conditions.

Zoster or Shingles Shot

Most insurances have a deductible or an initial portion a patient is responsible for before the insurance coverage starts. This is also true for Medicare at the first of each year. Regardless of insurance type, most plans have a deductible structure, so make sure you are aware of your out-of-pocket responsibility.

EOB, Explanation of Benefit

It is recommended to adults over the age of 50. It is a two-dose series of RZV (Shingrix) 2 to 6 months apart regardless of prior herpes zoster or history of zoster vaccine live (ZVL, Zostavax). Many patients have complained of getting a small shingles infection, but most have a blunted version when having the vaccine onboard.

The Flu shot is familiar by most of the population. Given yearly, its recommended for all adults. Certain allergies and medical conditions do prohibit specific adults from getting this vaccine. Immunocompromised adults, pregnant women, those with no spleen are some of the conditions prohibiting the flu shot.

• Pickup & Delivery

Tetanus or Tdap

Most insurances pay for medical services, covering a large portion, usually 80 percent. The remaining 20 percent is often covered by a supplemental or secondary policy. If someone does not have a secondary policy, that portion’s responsibility falls on the patient. Sometimes insurances won’t pay the full amount of a medical bill, and that portion could also be the responsibility of the patient. In network and out of network

Lower extremity wounds are common in the elderly, especially with other conditions like diabetes and peripheral neuropathy, reducing their ability to feel. Those with wounds are often given boosters, since vaccination records are not readily available.

The recommended isolation period has also changed from 5 days of avoidance of others to now 24 hours. Testing is also optional, with symptoms being considered an indication for isolation. Please check with your trusted health care provider for the most current recommendation, also taking your personal health history into consideration.

Health insurance, like any other insurance, is a necessary part of life. There are unique and personal considerations you should factor in deciding the type of insurance right for you but always read the fine print. Specifically for seniors, HMOs or Medicare Advantage plans may seem attractive initially, but often have limitations when services and medications are needed. We found straight Medicare with a supplemental plan, provided the best coverage for our patients. Lower initial premiums often do not mean lower out of pocket costs. Consult your physicians to make the most informed decision regarding your health insurance.

Mahjong Night

Immanuel Hall was filled with laughter and the spirit of friendly competition when Hinsdale Humane Society joined with the Hinsdale Historical Society for an evening of everyone’s new favorite game. Lisa Oleson, founder of The Mahjong Guild, kept everything running smoothly as players leveled up their skills for two great causes. The Humane and Historical Societies will join forces again in October for an Unleash the Spirits fundraiser.

Ladies Who Lead

An extraordinary assemblage of women filled Ruth Lake Country Club with beauty, laughter, and the spirit of sisterhood for the first ever Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) Ladies Who Lead luncheon. Members and guests heard from a grateful grant recipient, celebrated the success of the club year just ended, and awarded scholarships to three deserving young women. Tina Weller was presented with the Legacy Award for her extraordinary gifts of leadership and the lasting impact she has created for HJWC and the charities it serves. Entrepreneur Ashley Logan moderated a marvelous panel discussion with fashion designer Azeeza Khan, state senator Darby Hills, Tricoci CMO Kristen Chase, and television host and producer Whitney Reynolds. It was an inspiring day that set the tone for the next 75 years of HJWC. hjwc.us
