AMY MOLFESE grew up in Chilton, Wisconsin, a small farming community that is surrounded by natural beauty. She lived within the city limits with her sister and parents, both of whom were bookkeepers for local businesses. Amy recalls Chilton as a lovely place in which to grow up.
She loved spending time at her grandparents’ farm that overlooking Lake Winnebago. “It was a place a kid could be a kid. I remember running around outside, climbing trees and being in awe of the gorgeous sunsets over the lake. The best memories are of family gatherings. I had many aunts, uncles and cousins and we would all gather at the farm for holidays. You could hear lots of laughter and conversation,” Amy recalls.
“I graduated Chilton High School as co-valedictorian, and was involved in volleyball, basketball, bowling, choir, and many other school activities. I worked in the accounting department of Kaytee Products and was a member of my church youth group. I loved going on walks or just driving around town with my friends and talking for hours. We also attended many weekend gatherings with bonfires,” she says.
She attended Saint Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin, graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration. While at SNC, Amy worked in the Office of Admissions as a tour guide and was a member of the Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority. She jumped at the fabulous opportunity to study abroad and spent four months in Salzburg, Austria. “I highly recommend The Sound of Music tour when you visit,” she advises. This program allowed Amy to explore Germany and Italy in addition to Austria. She hopes to visit these spots again someday.
Just before her Austrian adventure, Amy met her husband, Joseph Molfese, at a friend’s wedding. They had a long-distance relationship for two years and were engaged in October of 1999.
Shortly before graduating Joseph encouraged Amy to consider joining him in opening Bella Cosa Jewelers. She agreed and 2000 turned out to be quite a year for the couple. Amy graduated in May, they were married on November 25 and opened their first store in Willowbrook on December 4, 2000. Amy says, “This has proven to be a great decision. I love working with beautiful gems and jewelry and with my husband every day. There is nothing better seeing a smile on a client’s face when they pick out the perfect engagement ring, anniversary gift or baby push present. Their excitement is inspiring!”
They opened a second location in Wilmette, in November of 2018. The couple are celebrating their 25th Wedding anniversary and 25th store anniversary this year.
Amy and Joseph have four children David (23), Angelina (20), Sophia (17), and Mia (8). “When David was a baby, he spent his days with us at Bella Cosa Jewelers. We were lucky to have the help of my mother-in-law. I would even bring David with me to Willowbrook - Burr Ridge Chamber of Commerce meetings.”
“Then Angelina was born, and she also spent a couple of months with us at the store. Clients still talk about seeing the babies in the store. Now the babies are 23 and 20.” Once Sophia came along, Amy worked from home while guiding the children through their busy days. She returned to the store when Sophia began kindergarten.
“We chose Hinsdale as it has that small town feeling yet is conveniently located to the expressways and to the city. The downtown area has great restaurants and the kids could easily walk or ride their bikes to the parks or friends’ houses. The community here loves to help others. When Mia was born, the carpools were a lifesaver. I have also noticed that when community members have a hardship, everyone offers to help. It really does take a village,” Amy says.
As part of this community, the Molfeses are devoted to helping others. “I am a member of the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club currently serving as a Co-Philanthropy Chair. I have also been a Co-Community Affairs chair and a member of the Benefit committee. I am also a member of the Hinsdale Auxiliary of the Infant Welfare Society, belong to Saint Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, and just started beginner tennis lessons at Hinsdale Raquet Club,” Amy tells us.

WORDS BY APRIL MATTEINI, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT FOR JEWELRY AT FREEMAN’S | HINDMAN
The Freeman’s | Hindman September 16 Important
Jewelry auction achieved an impressive $3,543,316 total with 91 percent of lots sold and a 117 percent sell-through by value. is auction featured distinguished collections from the Estates of Phyllis Pressman, Carol Hardin Davis, and Mary L. Bundy—all achieving white-glove results— alongside notable property from private collectors. is has only served to confirm something that we in the auction world have known for a while now: the estate jewelry market is thriving.

e September results perfectly illustrate the ongoing strength of the estate jewelry market, including high demand for signed pieces and exceptional colored gemstones. ese top lots also featured impeccable provenance, once again showing that jewels with stories are highly valued by collectors. Among these top lots were a Bulgari yellow gold necklace and bracelet, from the 1980s, a Van Cleef & Arpels Burmese ruby and diamond brooch, and an Edwardian emerald brooch.
Jewelry Staples
ere are a few essential pieces that every jewelry collection should include: a chunky bracelet, a gold necklace, hoop earrings,
and a great watch. If those descriptions seem a bit vague, that’s intentional. e pieces in your collection should showcase your personal style in these foundational pieces. And what better way to do that than with a unique piece of estate jewelry? Wear them alone or layer them with other statement jewelry pieces.

Signed jewelry usually refers to a piece that bears a maker’s mark or signature of the designer, manufacturer, or house behind the jewelry. is small mark on the back of a piece can increase its value. Some marks are more significant than others because its presence shows that the piece was created with the highest standards of design, craftsmanship, and stone selection. is makes purchasing signed jewelry at auction a great way to both start building a jewelry collection that will be the envy of your friends, or to take those first steps toward a five- or sixfigure purchase with confidence.
Last but certainly not least, buy what you love and want to wear. When buying at auction, it is important to utilize the pre-sale services that are offered by the auction house, such as requesting condition reports and additional photographs of any piece you have your eye on. Freeman’s | Hindman welcomes you to our West Loop gallery to view and try on pieces for our upcoming auctions. Chicago previews will be held: e Holiday Edit: Jewelry & Luxury Handbags and Couture: November 15, 16, and 17; Important Jewelry: December 1, 2, and 3.

Ballyhoo Hospitality’s DeNucci’s brings the best of Italian-American cuisine to Hinsdale.
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
The pride Chef Salvatore “Sal” Lo Cascio takes in his handiwork is apparent. Stepping from the kitchen with a fresh-baked pesto pizza held aloft, Lo Cascio sets the pie down on a table at the recently opened DeNucci’s in Hinsdale, and says with grin, “And there you go!”
It’s no surprise that Lo Cascio’s pizzas are among the menu mainstays at DeNucci’s—Ballyhoo Hospitality’s newest restaurant. Lo Cascio’s pizzaiolo skills, honed in his Sicilian homeland, led to pizza triumphs at Ballyhoo’s Coda di Volpe in Chicago, then at Pizza by Sal in Wilmette, and now at DeNucci’s.
“I become obsessed,” says Lo Cascio, “especially when I am working on a new crust. I work on it every day. It’s not easy because there is so much to balance with time, temperature, and stretch. All of the pieces have to match perfectly to create a winning recipe and procedure.”
At DeNucci’s, the pizza is New York-style. e dough for the crust goes through a three-day fermentation cycle that gives it the perfect crisp and chewy texture and sourdough flavor when baked. It comes in three “white” varieties (pesto pomodorini,
mushroom, and tartufo) and four “red” varieties (Margherita, sausage & onion, spicy pepperoni, and good veggie.)
All of that, plus the gluten-free Sicilian-style pizza Lo Cascio first created as an act of love for his wife. “She’s celiac,” says Lo Cascio, “and it was heartbreaking for me that she couldn’t eat the things I could eat.”
icker than the New York-style crust, with a pillowy top, nice crispy bottom, and gorgeously fresh toppings (ricotta, mozzarella, blistered cherry tomatoes, and basil pesto), the pesto version was one of the best gluten-free pizzas we’ve had.
But there’s more to DeNucci’s than pizza. Warm, convivial, with plenty of red sauce on top, DeNucci’s is restaurant powerhouse and Ballyhoo Hospitality’s first entry into the Hinsdale dining scene. Opening this month, the restaurant takes over from Il Poggiolo as the go-to Italian spot that’s just as well suited to a quiet family dinner as it is a celebratory evening. With steak and sushi already represented in town, DeNucci’s gives Hinsdaleans a welcome new regular spot for date nights and family dinners.
Like its sister DeNucci’s, which opened last summer in

Lincoln Park, the menu at DeNucci’s Hinsdale is sans steak. Entrees are either fish or poultry, except for one veal dish. e hearty “Nonna-styled” specials featured throughout the week are Italian American favorites, like the five-layer lasagna Bolognese offered on Tuesday. Classically prepared, this delicious dish is not too cheesy, with its rich sauce layered between delicate pasta sheets handmade in the restaurant that morning.
Our culinary foray began with the mushroom-tru ffle arancini.
e crisp-tender morsels of nutty, 7-year-aged carnaroli rice blended with minced chives, mushroom duxelles, pecorino Romano, and mascarpone cheese were very good on their own, but even better twirled in the tru ffled aioli on the plate beneath them.
Another favorite starter? e platter of grilled calamari dotted with bright, pickled peppadew and banana peppers in a thickened red wine vinaigrette. e combination made me think, “Acid and spice, and all things nice,” which pretty much sums up the dish.
From the pasta offerings, we tried one of the four fresh handmade selections and one of the five dried and imported pasta offerings.
From the fresh handmade choices, the agnolotti del plin is pure decadence. e bite-sized pasta purses are filled with minced shallot, mascarpone, Maine lobster, and herbs and bathed in a creamy fennel-accented sauce dotted with more lobster pieces.
e lumache arrabbiata (lumache means “snail” in Italian) is a creamy, yet spicy dish with a sauce Ballyhoo V.P. of Culinary Jaysen Euler calls “Ballyhoo’s version of vodka sauce.” As the

name suggests, the noodles were snail-shell-shaped, perfect for cupping and holding the sauce.
Our group included some guests with dietary restrictions (dairy and gluten intolerance.) ankfully, DeNucci’s menu had plenty to offer that met their needs. e fish dishes, for example, were especially good.
e branzino piccata is a must. e nicely crisped and charred fish is bathed in a lemony caper sauce, with surprise bursts of flavor delivered by tiny lemon supremes.
DeNucci’s cocktail options were sampled throughout dinner. We found the Amaro Manhattan especially good, and the fun, non-alcoholic Phony Negroni equally tasty. DeNucci’s wine selection is robust, with more than 50 selections, and the dessert menu includes another 14 after-dinner drink options—from the Grappa di Sassicaia to the Ramazzotti.
And to close? DeNucci’s pistachio blondie sundae—a mountain of pistachio ice cream, whipped cream, and blondie pieces, with an amaro cherry on top is very shareable. We couldn’t even finish it between the four of us.
We look forward to trying DeNucci’s recently introduced mozzarella sticks on our next visit. e mozzarella is freshly made and hand-pulled in-house, before being breaded, fried, and served with marinara sauce. We’ll also pay close attention when the server lists the verbal specials, anticipating the introduction of the tavern-style pizza Lo Cascio is working on now. “ at day will come,” laughs Lo Cascio. “But not until it’s perfect.”

“We just installed all new windows at our house and we love them! Before we made our decision we went to the manufacturer’s plant to see how the windows were made. We were concerned at first because Russ’s price was more than half of his competitor’s quoted price. After our tour we were very comfortable with our decision. Installation day was quick and painless. Our house was left in great condition. I highly recommend this company!”

I watched kids' faces light up as they spotted the elves around every corner. It's the kind of thing that makes you remember why holidays felt magical when you were little.

Nemacolin has accommodation options for different tastes and group sizes. Falling Rock is the most exclusive, a 42-room property with 24-hour butler service and design inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. e Grand Lodge reopened in 2023 after being completely reimagined, offering 56 suites with a more contemporary feel. For larger groups, e Estates and Homes are private residences sleeping 8-22 people, with butler and chef services available.
e dining scene impressed me more than I expected. Fawn & Fable in e Grand Lodge does farm-to-table steakhouse food using local Laurel Highlands ingredients. Lautrec in e
is year's big addition is “Wrapped in Wonder,” a reservation-only experience that gives families private time with Santa, plus elf performances and activities like gingerbread decorating. ere's also Breakfast with Santa, where he sits with families during a holiday buffet. I loved hearing about the Bedtime Elf visits, where elves come to kids' rooms for story time, which sounds like the kind of detail parents will remember long after checkout. During winter months, you can try dog sledding and meet the sled dogs, which adds a real mountain adventure element you don't find at most destinations.
My room at e Chateau was everything you'd want for a holiday getaway. is property was recently renovated and inspired by the Ritz Paris. My room had vaulted ceilings with crystal chandeliers and a marble bathroom with a soaking tub that became my evening ritual after full days exploring the resort. e whole place has that old-world elegance that makes you want to slow down and savor the experience.

Chateau is the formal option with Toulouse-Lautrec prints on the walls that serves the kind of food you'll think about for days. Aqueous at Falling Rock specializes in modern seafood, while Gusto! does Italian fare, including wood-fired pizzas. With over 18 restaurants and bars, I never ran out of options.
One of my favorite surprises was Nightcap in the evenings.
e same elves who entertain families during the day return for "Elves After Dark," an adults-only cabaret show that's more entertaining than you'd expect. Combined with well-made cocktails, it's the perfect way for parents to unwind after a day of family activities.
During the day, I tried ice skating and spent time on the ski slopes when the weather allowed. e Peak has activities yearround like heated pools, cosmic bowling, and indoor axe throwing. In winter, you can add skiing and snowboarding to the mix.
e Woodlands Spa spans 32,000 square feet with 30 treatment rooms and all the relaxation amenities you'd want. e art collection has over 1,000 pieces from artists like Chihuly and Fernando Botero placed throughout the resort.
Hardy's Holiday Village runs from November 29 through December 28, 2025. It's the kind of place that offers holiday magic without feeling forced, where families can make the memories that stick around long after the decorations come down.

Chicago Window Guys helps homeowners beat winter chill with fall window installations.
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY
MONICA KASS ROGERS
When the owners of a 100-year-old Lake Forest home decided they couldn’t face another drafty winter, they called Russ Armstrong, owner of Chicago Window Guys (CWG).
“ ey’d been thinking about replacing their windows for years,” says Armstrong. “But with 25-year-old, leaky windows and another brutal winter on the way, they didn’t want to wait any longer.”
Quotes from other providers had come in sky-high. But Armstrong—who personally handles all sales calls—was able to offer a significantly better price. By eliminating sales commissions, manufacturing windows locally, and using a trusted in-house crew, CWG keeps overhead low and quality high.
While price mattered, keeping the integrity of the home’s design intact was also important. CWG’s experienced installers carefully maintained the original woodwork and interior casing, preserving the home's character while dramatically improving energy efficiency.
“ e homeowners were thrilled,” says Armstrong. “And their referrals brought in a dozen more window jobs. at’s the kind of word-of-mouth we’ve built our reputation on.”
Although CWG installs windows year-round, Armstrong says autumn is a great time to have the work done. “You want to get the new windows in before it gets too cold,” he says. “ at way, you enjoy a warmer, more comfortable winter—and start saving on energy bills right away.”
High-quality windows offer more than just curb appeal and clear views. ey’re critical to a home’s energy performance and can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 30 percent. ey also eliminate drafts, leaks, and moisture problems like mold—issues common in older windows.
All CWG windows are custom measured, and custom made—whether you're replacing classic double-hung windows or upgrading to bow, bay, garden, or projection styles. e products incorporate the latest energy-efficient technologies, including:
• Argon/Krypton gas fills
• Triple low-E silver coatings
• Foam-filled frames
• Non-metal spacing systems that prevent seal failure
“We build a barrier to keep your energy in and the elements out,” Armstrong explains. “We can’t stop the polar vortex from hitting Chicago—but we can definitely keep it out of your living room.”
With a manufacturing facility in Chicago and decades of experience throughout the city and suburbs, CWG understands the demands of Midwest weather and architecture. e company backs its work with a lifetime warranty on all parts and labor—including glass breakage—and offers a pricematch guarantee. “We don’t play the ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ game,” says Armstrong. “ at’s just a gimmick. Our prices are fair from the start—for a better product and better installation.”
Armstrong emphasizes that expert installation is just as important as window quality. at’s why CWG doesn’t use subcontractors. “You can have the most expensive window in the world, but if it’s installed poorly, you’re back to square one,” he says. “We use our own crew—people we know and trust—so we can ensure every job is done right.”
He also cuts the flu ff from the sales process.
“No three-hour presentations. No pressure to ‘buy today.’ I handle all sales calls myself, so you get straight answers, not sales tactics,” says Armstrong. “Over the years, we’ve built a loyal customer base,” he reflects. “People refer their friends and family, and many become friends themselves. at means everything to us.”

his stately Southeast Hinsdale estate holds many surprises. It’s recently built, though it’s timeless appeal hints at gracious eras gone by. It would look as lovely and at in the Oxfordshire countryside as it does in its Midwestern hamlet. Its elegant façade could fool one into believing that behind the door is a stuffy, formal space filled with equestrian prints and mysterious rooms. Instead, light-filled rooms on a magnificent scale feel bright, welcoming, and curated to perfection. Built by Dave Knecht Homes, with an obsessive attention to detail, this is one of the most special residences in-town or anywhere.

rough the stately front door and welcoming formal entrance frame the central room. A substantial fireplace is opposite a wall of French doors leading to a wide, welcoming terrace.

is heart of the home is scaled for family meals and entertaining. What is unique is how many rooms are directly accessible from this kitchen. e dining room connects through a pantry, the elegant great room is adjacent, and the casual sunroom is nearby. e breakfast nook is truly special. No mere banquette and table, it’s an elegant sanctuary that feels like an escape from the outside world.

At the end of a long day, this great room with its oversized sofas and classic bookshelves is the perfect spot for the family to decompress and discuss the highs and lows. e coffered ceiling and fluted columns add to the appeal of the room.

Somehow both cozy and bright, this is the ultimate multipurpose room. Artisans crafted the modern take on a checkerboard floor. A historical paint color enhances the wood trim throughout.

e extra-deep basement of the home allows for a theater, spacious home gym, game and playrooms for the children and the beautiful lounge to rival the best hotel lobby in the world. ere’s no better place to light a fire and cozy up.

A night to shine, celebrating The Community House and igniting its mission at the annual Holiday Ball.
As holiday lights twinkle and the spirit of giving comes alive, anticipation builds for Hinsdale’s most anticipated evening of the year. Behind the scenes, e Community House’s Holiday Ball Co-Chairs, Linda Davis, Karen Eck, and Heather Linn, have been orchestrating a celebration for December 6 that blends panache with purpose.
For decades, e Holiday Ball has stood as a cherished tradition—a date long circled in ink and marked with reminders on calendars throughout the community. Each year, it brings neighbors, friends, and families together in a dazzling celebration, uniting them for the greater good, sparking meaningful change that reaches far beyond the ballroom.
“ e Holiday Ball has been a special tradition for years. It is a chance for our community to come together and embrace the spirit of celebration and generosity,” reflects Linn. “ is is more than just an elegant holiday kickoff. It's a heartfelt opportunity for us to stand together and make a meaningful difference right here at home.”
is year, e Holiday Ball glows under the theme: Spark the Season—A Night to Shine. A Cause to Celebrate.
More than a celebration, it stands as a true call to action.
Supporting the Spark Youth Development Initiative, an essential program provided by e Community House, “Our goal is to ignite community engagement by raising awareness of the vital services and opportunities the Spark Youth Development Initiative provides for those in unincorporated DuPage County,” shares Eck.
Tuning into the spirit of the season, she notes, “Under the beautiful twinkling lights of e Holiday Ball, we will share the program’s importance, adding a sparkle to our community that will light up the lives across our neighborhoods. We believe igniting this spark can be a catalyst for something bigger, fueling lasting impact.”
making programs and services more accessible.
“A few miles can feel like a world away,” Eck also observes. “Programs at Anne M. Jeans Elementary School and Burr Ridge Middle School bridge that gap, providing children with the opportunities that are often taken for granted.” Linn adds, “Spark ensures geography and economics don’t determine a child’s opportunities. Children gain a safe, nurturing space to learn and grow.”
Beyond academics, Spark addresses essential activities and mental health needs, supporting children as whole individuals. Davis explains, “Everything from mentoring, study groups, counseling, and field trips is provided to participants,” highlighting the wide range of services available. Linn turns to the mental health component, noting, “Licensed counselors provide social-emotional learning groups and individual support, addressing trauma or stress many children face.”
e Community House’s initiatives thrive thanks to the generosity and engagement of the local community. Receiving no state or county funding, every contribution counts. “Community support—through business collaboration, volunteer engagement, and donations—helps increase reach and deepen impact,” Davis says. Local partnerships with programs such as Junior Achievement and Swimmers for Swimmers further amplify the initiative’s reach, providing additional resources and opportunities for participating children.
“We are committed to ensuring all communities have equitable access to opportunities...”
“Looking ahead, we aim to expand counseling, literacy programs, and enrichment opportunities,” Linn notes, highlighting the vision for Spark’s growth. Eck adds, “ e success of e Holiday Ball is critical for providing families with the essential programming they need to thrive,” reminding guests that their participation has a direct, meaningful impact.
Creating Spark in the community’s own backyard was intentional. “We are committed to ensuring all communities have equitable access to opportunities,” says Davis.
Formerly known as Willowbrook Corner, the Spark Youth Development Initiative embodies the true spirit of community service. “Spark takes a holistic approach to youth support, offering tutoring, mentoring, counseling, and mental health services,” says Davis.
Spark also offers affordable after-school care and summer enrichment programs, ensuring children have the guidance and opportunities they need to flourish both inside and outside the classroom. “Spark provides educational support and recreation programs, giving K–8 students a place to grow,” says Linn. Building on this, Eck emphasizes the enrichment opportunities. “We incorporate educational resources on topics such as literacy, managing finances, cooking and healthy eating, swim lessons and water safety,” she says. By bringing these programs directly to the schools, Spark extends its reach beyond traditional boundaries,
Even after the last song of the evening fades, the story continues. Davis encourages attendees to keep the momentum going. “Become a regular donor or volunteer—sustaining involvement keeps the spark alive,” she says. Eck echoes this sentiment. “Every act of compassion creates ripples of positive change,” she says, showing how small gestures can have a big effect in the community.
e co-chairs leave guests with a message that continues to spark long after the night ends. “When a community comes together, real change is possible,” Davis observes. Eck adds, “Your generosity creates sparkle and brings hope to those served by Spark.” Linn closes with a heartfelt reminder: “Supporting e Community House gives children a safe place to learn, grow, and shine. Whether donating, volunteering, or partnering with your business, the spark lit at e Holiday Ball can burn all year long.”

The Oak Brook Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary’s Mistletoe Medley is an extravaganza of friendship, fashion and fundraising.

Kathleen Sievertson, Marci Kizluk, and Susan Santefort ready for Mistletoe Medley at Drury Lane Theatre.
Giving Tuesday was established in 2012 as charitable response to the consumer frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It’s a day to give back by sharing time, talent and funding to support communities and charitable causes doing good work in communities that need it most.
Mistletoe Medley, the signature fundraiser of the Oak Brook Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary, is an exemplary way to spend Giving Tuesday and kick off the holiday season. “People always tell us this is the start of their Christmas season. So many of our members have been involved for decades and guests love seeing the same faces every year, even if they don’t know us, they love the family feeling of seeing this familiar group of women devoted to a cause,” says Marci Hanzlik, co-president of the Oak Brook Chapter.
For many friend groups and families, attending is important tradition. Event chair Susan Santefort says, “For over a decade I've been celebrating Mistletoe Medley day with my daughters who are also members at their area auxiliary chapters. Soon my granddaughter will join the Junior Board, so our family will have three generations involved.”
“We truly are like a family,” Marci says, “We’ve been through babies, grad, adoption, divorces, and we’ve still survived and thrived.”
“ ere is a reason why over 90% of our OB members have stayed for over 25 years and that is that the results are so satisfying. We raise between $100,000 to $200,000 at Mistletoe Medley. is funding allows for real-life underserved children and families access to health care services at the Clinic, enabling them to lead healthy lives,” Susan says.
To make the most of this one-day extravaganza, arrive right when the doors open at 9 a.m. to visit the Holiday Boutique. “ e first two hours are for shopping, entering the incredible raffles, and enjoying it all,” says co-president Kathy Sievertsen.
“My favorite part of Mistletoe Medley is watching the energy and enthusiasm generated by our guests as they peruse the fabulous Raffle Prizes and unique goodies showcased by our exhibitors, who always offer options for everybody's taste, age group, and price point," says Susan. “ ere are many things to look at in the boutique and so many people to meet. It’s a great time,” adds Marci.
Kathy shares that as a golfer, she and many others are excited about this year’s Grand Raffle Prize, sponsored by member Liz Berglund. It’s a 5-Star Luxury Golf and Spa Getaway in Kohler, Wisconsin. e package features three night’s accommodations at e Inn on Woodlake at the heart of Kohler’s sports, retail, and entertainment district. It’s a perfect setting for an extraordinary experience featuring great golf on Kohler’s legendary courses, spa services at the renowned Kohler Waters Spa, fine dining, and golf. Liz shares, “It’s a chance to visit a luxury spa without having to travel too far.”
en the entertainment kicks off. NBC5 news anchor Al-
lison Rosati has served as master of ceremonies for a decade. “Allison is wonderful and has become a big supporter of the center,” Kathy says. e beloved television personality keeps things moving as fashion goes front and center on the Drury Lane runway with another fabulous presentation from Zzazz Productions featuring the best of city and suburban chic. e dancers from Salt Creek Ballet dazzle with selections from e Nutcracker. “ at was an ask from one of the other IWS fundraising groups and showcasing the dancers really elevates the day,” says Marci. Kathy adds, “ e fashion show is magnificent, and the Salt Creek Ballet dancers are extraordinary.”
In between, guests will hear from the leadership team at IWS Family Health and learn how the generous support of the seven chapters of the Auxiliary make the difference for many who might otherwise go without health care.
IWS Family Health began in 1911, as the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. At the time of its founding, IWS provided a safe supply of milk for newborns as the city combated spiraling infant mortality.
Today, the Center provides primary medical care, dentistry, child development, and behavioral health services for all ages. Located in Logan Square, at 3600 West Fullerton Avenue in Chicago, this primary care center provides a multi-service healthcare home to medically underserved children and their families. Last year, an additional pediatric site opened in Dunning at 6416 West Belmont Avenue, Chicago.
Marci shares, “ e center is a beautiful place. When I was younger, my husband and I would drive down on Saturday mornings and I was able to go in and read to the children. It was the most wonderful experience to know these bright young children.” A version of this tradition continues with a book kiosk from which children can choose something to read.
e IWS Family Health Center also offers an array of support programs and initiatives, which the Oak Brook Chapter enthusiastically supports. e AngelBaby Bags program provides seven baby essentials plus additional items such as a pacifier or baby clothes and a classic or favorite baby book in a convenient diaper bag for new mom. e annual Fall Coat Drive, which help IWS Family Health patients be “Winter Ready.” Janie’s Kitchen Food Pantry, to assist patient families experiencing food insecurity.
anks to the generosity of the communities that our members live in, more mothers, children, and families will receive the essential medical care they need, enabling them to lead healthier lives and build strong communities. e Oak Brook Chapter is especially grateful for their longtime supporters, including Joe and Nives Rizza and Susan Heil.
If one day with this kind of love isn’t enough, the forty members of the Oak Brook Chapter welcome new members who are ready and willing to share their time, talent, and resources and make wonderful lifelong friends.

Chicago’s only woman-owned mortgage lender, A and N Mortgage, is redefining the future of finance.
WORDS BY JANIS MVK
Early on, Neena Vlamis honed a rare professional skill: to transform the mortgage process into an experience built on trust, expertise, and confidence. Armed with that skill, along with determination and a clear vision, she launched A and N Mortgage at the crisp age of 27 as its Owner and CEO.
“I’ve dedicated the last 20 years to educating people about homeownership and mentoring employees in their career paths,” explains Vlamis. “While it’s a field that has been historically male-dominated, I saw it as an opportunity rather than a barrier to bring a fresh perspective. I focus on delivering results while remaining relentless.”
Now, Vlamis stands out as Chicago’s only woman-owned mortgage lender—licensed in 22 states, with more than $5 billion funded, and over two decades of helping clients make sense of homeownership. Moreover, she has built a team grounded in her core values—crafting financial strategies tailored to each client’s unique life goals.
“What drives me to thrive in this space is a combination of resilience and results,” she says. “ riving in this industry isn’t about fitting into a mold, but rather redefining it by creating relationships, mentoring others, and proving through performance that success isn’t limited by gender.”
Vlamis shapes A and N Mortgage’s philosophy around resilience and helping clients feel confident in their decisions. She credits that success to building trust, mentoring her team, and offering clear guidance people can actually use.
“ e mortgage process can often feel intimidating,” she says. “My focus when working with our clients is to understand their story so I can frame the mortgage in the context of their

life goals. It’s important to communicate this with clarity and empathy.”
For Vlamis, luxury isn’t just about high-net-worth transactions—it’s about creating an experience that feels personal, refined, and intentional. From carefully crafted brand guidelines with her art director to a team culture built on compassion, expertise, and attention to detail, every interaction reflects the sophistication that defines A and N Mortgage. “We show up consistently,” she says. “Our messaging, visuals, and personal touches show clients they are valued and understood.”
Vlamis and her team ensure that their focus stays on opportunities, not obstacles. Her approach for high-end clients blends clarity with understanding—taking time to outline options and trade-off s ensures clients feel confident in every decision. “I care about their long-term financial well-being, not just a single deal,” she explains.
Looking ahead, Vlamis envisions A and N Mortgage growing not just in volume but in impact. e firm aims to create proprietary products and serve more families, solidifying a legacy built on expertise, trust, and personal empowerment. Her guiding principle is straightforward yet profound: “If you say you’re going to be there, show up. Show up as the best version of yourself and always help others.”
At A and N Mortgage, the team is more than a group of brokers—they’re architects of opportunity, mentors, and visionaries redefining what it means to offer luxury financial services with heart, sophistication, and purpose.

Michael Kowalczyk of Hinsdale Dentistry empowers patients to feel good about themselves and their teeth leading a practice that prioritizes compassion and minimally invasive, state-of-the-art dental care.
PHOTOGRAPHY

IAN MCLEOD / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
hey say that necessity is the mother of invention, and in the case of Hinsdale Dentistry’s Michael Kowalczyk, it was his own aversion to going to the dentist that inspired him to join a practice where patients felt comfortable, confident, and empowered.
“I had extremely sensitive teeth when I was young. Just to get my teeth cleaned was a painful experience. It was something I did not look forward to,” explains Kowalczyk, who grew up in west suburban River Forest. “ is is why now, as a dentist myself, I make sure we do everything we can to ensure people do not avoid getting that important preventive care.”
With an interest in science and math and the influence of family members who work in health care, he always knew that he would have a career in that sector. But the more time he spent with dentists, observing their clinical skills and talking about their daily practice, the more obvious his choice became to specialize in that field.
“Pursuing a career in dentistry was a perfect match for my personality and skills,” says Kowalczyk, who joined the longestablished Hinsdale Dentistry 12 years ago and now owns the practice. “I enjoy working with my hands, I enjoy the patient interactions in the clinical procedures, and I enjoy knowing that I can teach people how to have a more positive impact on their health through good oral health care.”
He credits his “patient first” mindset to what he learned from mentors and even his own parents, who were both health care professionals.
“ is foundation helped me to understand the importance of building each patient relationship based on listening, meeting needs together, and trust,” adds Kowalczyk. “One of my proudest moments was becoming my first grade teacher’s dentist. She taught me to read, to be curious, and to be interested in opportunities to learn. Now she trusts me to care for her.”
A turning point for Hinsdale Dentistry came last year when its beloved Dr. Peter Harnois died unexpectedly.
“Peter hired me in 2013 when I completed my post-graduate dental residency. We became partners and I am now the sole owner,” says Kowalczyk, explaining that Dr. Harnois began practicing at Hinsdale Dentistry in the 1980s—joining a practice founded by Dr. Don orne in 1969.
Hinsdale Dentistry recently welcomed two experienced

dentists part-time to help usher in the practice’s next chapter— Dr. Kimberly Dyoko and Dr. Jennifer Moran-Kobes. It has also updated its x-ray system and installed computers with state-ofthe-art screens so they can show patients images of their teeth in real time.
“ e screens are twice the size of the previous ones and really help patients become more knowledgeable about their own teeth,” continues Kowalczyk, adding that when it comes to the practice’s cosmetic procedures, other new technology upgrades allow them to create a “digital smile” so patients can envision the possibilities. “It’s really important for us to listen to each patient’s expectations and goals. We want everyone to have teeth that are both beautiful and natural. ere are ways to achieve this, so the restored teeth do not look too white or too false.”
In addition to Invisalign, Hinsdale Dentistry specializes in Implants and in high-quality porcelain Lumineers and other cosmetic enhancements—procedures that can be life changing for some patients.
“ e procedures can be hours long but when you put the temporaries on and they see their new smile for the first time, they often start tearing up,” he says. “ ey are so happy.”
Kowalczyk credits his background as a high school varsity athlete and a college lacrosse player to the work he does today at Hinsdale Dentistry—particularly when it comes to helping patients achieve their dental health goals.
“ e lessons I learned from competitive play prepared me for dentistry—set goals, prepare, be confident, disciplined, strive for perfection, play under pressure, trust in making smart decisions, and value teamwork,” he explains. “In my office, we view dentistry as a single player and a team sport, and take a lot of pride in treating generations of family members with compassion and respect.” at means building personal relationships that go beyond just taking care of teeth.
“Our goal is to be more than a dental provider. Unlike corporate dentist offices that have a ‘drill and fill’ mindset, we truly aim to be a part of our patients’ lives, to be a team they can count on,” adds Kowalczyk. “ at’s how we set ourselves apart.”

WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, M.D., CEO, HANSA MEDICAL GROUPE

As the fall season turns into winter, our sun exposure diminishes significantly, especially in the Chicago area. is also affects how much vitamin D we obtain from the sun.
Vitamin D deficiency is a very common finding on patients’ labs. Almost 80 percent of my patients are vitamin D deficient. So why is treating and obtaining normal vitamin D levels important? We know the deficiency can adversely affect our bones, insulin production, immune function, and even worsen our memory according to some studies. In recent years, more primary care physicians are checking patients’ vitamin D levels, especially in those older than 65. Dark skinned or higher pigmented individuals have a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency.
e lab tests for 25-[(OH)D] or 25-hydroxyvitamin D and there are 2 types of vitamin D. Ergocalciferol is obtained from dietary vegetable sources and oral supplements. Cholecalciferol is obtained primarily from skin exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in sunlight or the ingestion of food sources. e Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults is 600 international units (IU) per day or 800 IU daily for those older than 70.

However, in my experience, many patients require a much higher dose of 1,000 to 5,000 IU per day. Foods that are rich in vitamin D include fish like salmon, trout, tuna and halibut and dairy products like milk and yogurt.
You are considered vitamin D deficient, when your blood level is below 20 ng/ml, insufficient between 20 and 30, and normal between 30 and 80 ng/ml. When your levels are 30 or less, it’s almost impossible to correct from just sun exposure and food. Supplementing vitamin D comes in various strengths, forms, and dosing considerations.
Your dosing may require adjustments based on factors like prior gastrointestinal surgeries, kidney conditions, osteoporosis, malabsorption syndromes, taking steroids, or eating disorders. Most supplements come in tablet or gel-cap forms, are over the counter, and are typically well tolerated. Occasionally I prescribe a higher weekly dose when levels are extremely low. Most patients also require the supplement to maintain a normal vitamin D level.
Most reading this article probably have a low vitamin D level. e good part is that it’s easy to diagnose via blood test levels, treat with an over-the-counter supplement, and has a low side effect profile. Before starting any treatment, always consult with your trusted health care professional.
