Romulus College side made the short journey to Coton Green in the FA Youth Cup last month. A core of last term's players with a sprinkling of new recruits took to the field for the first competitive match of the season. The game turned out to be an epic affair with a bit of everything in and an entertaining watch for the fans. It definitely was a great advert for youth football in the Midlands area.
The game kicked off with both sides going back and forth on attack. The home side shaded possession, but Romulus Academy created more openings and looked more like scoring that first vital goal. However, the first major incident occurred midway through the half when the unfortunate Roms keeper Connor Harris was harshly sent off for handling just outside the area. Head coach, Luke Rowe was quick to make adjustments bringing on our reserve goalie Charley Morgan for his competitive debut. Initially the home side took the incentive and piled on the pressure with Romulus down to ten men. Morgan, fresh between the sticks soon showed his worth pulling off a couple of good reflex stops. After the barge of attack Romulus started to feel the way back into the game and started to dominate the forward play. Once again Roms created a few near chances, but against the run of play it was the home side who took the lead with a goal off a corner. With it being a hot summer's evening a drink break was allowed and Luke Rowe used the opportunity to rally his team. Romulus did not drop their heads as they went looking for the equaliser. Eventually the moment came as Isiaka Touray shrugged off two opponents surged forward then on the turn from some distance out rocketed the ball into the back of the net. The eventful first-half came to a close and I think everyone took a collective breath.
The second half was a much tighter game between the two sides, yet Romulus seemed the more likely to score, Touray carrying on his great form controlling and placing the College side on the front foot at every chance possible. With both sides creating opportunities in the game and the weather still muggy the ref decided to give another drinks break as we were closing in on the latter stages. Once the game resumed thoughts on a penalty shootout started to creep into everyone's minds. Unfortunately, the home side late on from a corner again grabbed the winner to the home fans' delight. Romulus Academy threw caution to the wind and everything they had to get back in the cup tie. A case of pinball in the Coton Green box resulted in a clearance off the line and few other half chances late on was not enough for Roms. Eventually the whistle blew sending the home side into the next round of the FA Youth Cup and Romulus College side wondering what could have been.
Not often I come away from a defeat and feel so proud of my team, but that game was one of the best examples with every player giving it everything and making a great account of themselves in a thoroughly entertaining night of football. One thing is for certain that if the lads carry on in that manner the Romulus College team will be in for a fantastic upcoming season. Anyway, enjoy tonight's cup tie & UTR, Trickie.
Well, the starting of another era.
Neil and his management team have stood down, and to be very truthful I am absolutely gutted that results wise it just hasn't been a success, but in every other way l feel they improved our club so much more in their tenure. Thank you all for your hard work and time you've all put in.
Then we go to our next step and welcome Joe Ballinger and George Evans, both have really wanted this job since Neil stood down and they both realise that it's a massive step to take on. They got off to a great start with the win over Uttoxeter, but now the hard work starts.
All l can do is offer them both my undying love for this club and any help and advice they may seek from me, it’s a massive ask both but I'm convinced you will both cope.
UTRs
Roger

Hello all – it’s great to be back at Coles Lane aka the Dominos Arena. From a Roms perspective, it’s the first time in 6 years we are playing at home in (Royal) Sutton Coldfield, the town that is the club’s natural home. From my perspective, it’s nearly 4 ½ years since I last tannoyed at Coles Lane. Yes, some things have changed, but the set-up remains roughly the same and I have a great view of the pitch. As ever, the team at Sutton Coldfield Town have been welcoming and very helpful and I’m looking forward to getting on the mic once again this evening.
We welcome Uttoxeter Town for our MFL Premier Division home game today. Roms have seen once again a lot of change in the pre-season. Watching the friendlies has been exciting, the highlight of the pre-season was playing a game at St. George’s Park on the very day England were contesting the Euro 2024 final a Romulus win and a tour of the facilities that England use to train was an incredible experience and privilege. A big thank you to George for organising everything. At some point, I will bore you all with my pictures from the day!
Admittedly, some of the results across our pre-season games have been disappointing, but I suppose it’s more about the performances and building a cohesive team and squad – after all, some teams may have won all their pre-season friendlies but in the course of the season, may do badly; whereas sometimes the reverse is the case… fingers crossed! The MFL, as we have come to realise, is a tough division, particularly because of the mileage each team has to cover week in and week out, but if we are able to grind out results on the road, and turn the Dominos Arena into a fortress, then, who knows?
I’d like to make a special shout-out to ‘Transport’ Dave Stafford, who came all the way from Ludlow to support the lads, including a Monday night game against Coleshill Town – it’s real dedication, which every non-league club deserves. I know Dave can’t get to all our games, but it’s always great to see him.
It’s great to be back.
UP THE ROMS!
Tom
