Social Responsibility of a Graphic Designer
Introduction Graphic Designers shape the way we see the world, and our perceptions of society. Because of this social responsibility is something that has been debated in the field since its conception. Social responsibility is an ethical framework, which suggests that, an entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large. Over the next few minutes, I will be addressing social responsibility as it pertains to advertising. I will start by defining social responsibility. Then I will address past and current trends in socially responsible advertising. I will finish by addressing the benefits of socially responsible advertising. What is Social Responsibility? For decades there has been a fine line between Graphic Design and the corporate business world. Some of the world’s most highly regarded Graphic Designers have expressed the importance of treading their commitment to the social responsibility of Graphic Designers. Current/Past Trends In modern society, with online reviews and professional review companies, it is much harder yet crucial to build trust with the consumers. Instead of just product trust, companies have turned toward socially responsible advertising to build moral trust.
