PETRO NEWS SAUDI ARAMCO'S OIL FACILITIES BEING ATTACKED (AGAIN) BY YEMEN'S HOUTHI

The Houthis in Yemen stated they attacked Saudi energy infrastructure on Friday, and the Saudi-led coalition reported the attack targeted oil giant Aramco's petroleum products distribution station in Jeddah, triggering a fire in two storage tanks but no injuries.

According to one eyewitness, a big plume of black smoke could be seen rising over the Red Sea city where the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was being held last weekend.

In recent weeks, the Iran-aligned Houthis have increased their attacks against the kingdom's oil facilities, just before of a short cease-fire for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Despite the coalition's repeated claims that it is exercising restraint in the face of the attacks, it launched a military operation in Yemen early on Saturday, claiming it was necessary to secure global energy sources and supply routes. The fire had been brought under control, according to a coalition statement broadcast on state television on Friday. In live footage broadcast by the Saudi-owned Ekhbariya television channel, flames could still be seen.

According to state news agency SPA, citing a Saudi energy ministry official, the kingdom strongly condemned the "sabotage attacks," reaffirming that it would not bear responsibility for any global oil supply interruptions caused by such attacks. The ministry criticized Iran for continuing to provide the Houthis with ballistic missiles and advanced drones, warning that the strikes would "have a negative impact on the Kingdom's production capacity and ability to meet its obligations to global markets." Teheran maintains that the Houthis are not armed.

MONDAY, 10TH APRIL 2022. The alliance had previously claimed to have prevented a series of Houthi drone and missile attacks, according to Saudi official media. A ballistic missile fired at Jizan was also intercepted by Saudi air defenses, resulting in a "small" fire at an electrical distribution plant.

Aramco did not respond to a request for comment right away. The alliance claimed the airstrikes on Saturday were aimed at "threat sources" in Houthi-controlled Sanaa and the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah. The attacks occurred during the Formula One Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which was being held in Jeddah. According to a witness, the dense black smoke could be seen from the racetrack. Yahya Sarea, a Houthi military spokesman, said the group fired missiles at Aramco's facilities in Jeddah and drones at the Ras Tanura and Rabigh refineries on Friday, as well as "important infrastructure" in Riyadh, the capital. The alliance had previously claimed to have prevented a series of Houthi drone and missile attacks, according to Saudi official media. A ballistic missile fired at Jizan was also intercepted by Saudi air defenses, resulting in a "small" fire at an electrical distribution plant.

The Houthi escalation comes as the UN special envoy tries to broker a temporary cease-fire in time for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins in April, and ahead of Riyadh's hosting of Yemeni parties for negotiations later this month. Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized the assault on Saudi Arabia's allies, saying the US would continue to engage with Riyadh to improve its defenses while seeking a long-term solution to the Yemen war. "At a time when the parties should be focusing on de-escalation and giving much-needed life-saving help to the Yemeni people ahead of Ramadan," Blinken added, "the Houthis continue their destructive behavior and irresponsible terrorist attacks attacking civilian infrastructure."

Proxy War A Houthi attack on the monarchy this weekend resulted in a temporary slowdown in refinery output and a fire at a petroleum products distribution station. The group attacked a refinery in Riyadh on March 11, setting a small fire.

The conflict, which is widely viewed as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, has killed tens of thousands of people and brought Yemen dangerously close to famine. According to the Houthis, they are fighting against a corrupt regime as well as foreign assault.

After the Houthis toppled the Saudibacked government from Sanaa in late 2014, the coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015.
