Junior Achievement USA announced the launch of its updated logo and branding, the first change to the logo since 1986. The update reflects the organization’s evolution from a supplemental youth development program in the 1980s to a fully integrated K-12 education partner today. Junior Achievement (JA) helps students connect what they learn in school to life outside the classroom, especially when it comes to managing money, work and career readiness, and entrepreneurship.

The brand update is also occurring globally, with JA operations in more than 100 countries worldwide beginning the process this year.

Since 1986, the Junior Achievement logo has consisted of a green triangle with three white or gold stairsteps in the triangle. The new logo, which resembles planes flying in formation or a flock of geese, borrows elements from the five previous JA logos.

The new logo and branding, which utilizes dark blue, turquoise, yellow, and green color elements, represents how one leader in the community, working in tandem with Junior Achievement, can impact many lives. Ultimately, by working together, we can all rise above. Junior Achievement envisions “a world where young people have the skillset and mindset to build thriving communities.”

A Message from the President & CEO Thank you for your support of Junior Achievement’s Spirit of JA Celebration. As the event’s name suggests, tonight we celebrate Junior Achievement’s mission and impact on the lives of the young people we serve in the Greater Boston region.

We last hosted this event in person in 2018. In 2019 we partnered with JA Worldwide to host the only global celebration of JA’s centennial. Just a month before we were scheduled to host this event in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to cancel the in person celebration in April, which we hosted virtually in October of that same year, and again in the spring of 2021.

Tonight, we are honored and excited to gather in person and celebrate together.

A lot has happened since our last Spirit of JA Celebration. Some of it was challenging, especially in the onset of the pandemic. However, I am happy to share that thanks to the unwavering support of our funders and resilience of our staff, board and community partners, JA of Greater Boston is stronger today than it has ever been.

We launched an exciting and bold new strategic vision to close the wealth and opportunity gaps for youth in key impact communities in our region (currently Boston, Brockton, Chelsea, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, Quincy, Somerville and Worcester) by creating middle school to career pathways, igniting youth entrepreneurship and preparing financially savvy youth.

JA Alumni Hall of Fame Eric Batista Eric, a native of Puerto Rico and longtime Worcester resident, is Assistant City Manager for the City of Worcester.

In 2012, he joined the City Manager’s office as Chief of Operations and Project Management. In 2019 he ascended to director of the newly established Office of Urban Innovation. In the fall of 2021 he was promoted to Assistant City Manager, and in the spring of 2022 was named acting City Manager by the City Council. In his future role starting June 1st, 2022, he will serve as Chief Executive for the second largest city in New England with 206,000 residents and oversee a city workforce of 7,000 employees with an annual city budget of more than $700 million. His tenure in municipal government includes securing over $5 million for the Youth Violence Prevention Initiative; overseeing the creation of the City’s Municipal Strategic Plan and Performance Measures; leading award-winning smart city solutions through the Office of Urban Innovation; establishing key data reporting functionality in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; and serving on regional nonprofit boards.

Before joining city government, Eric worked at BNY Mellon, YOU, Inc., and Latino Education Institute at Worcester State University. A dedicated public servant, he promotes and facilitates a safe, inclusive, and equitable workplace that supports employee engagement, innovation, and productivity. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from UMass Amherst and an MBA from Assumption College.

Eric is proud to be an alum of Junior Achievement from his alma mater, North High School, where he credits the support of staff and the leadership opportunities JA provided through their curriculum that set the bar for the rest of his career.

Spirit of JA Individual Awardee Steve Sullivan Steve is the founder of Wild Blue Flight Simulators, LLC. and is a commercial pilot and flight instructor. He is the retired Senior Vice President, Communications for the Liberty Mutual Group where he was responsible for advertising, public relations, internal communications, and worldwide branding. Prior to Liberty Mutual, Steve served as President of Mintz & Hoke Advertising and P.R., and Chief Operating Officer of Clarke Goward Advertising, both in Boston.

He graduated from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and served in the U.S. Air Force for six years including a combat tour in Vietnam. Steve was Chairman of the Board of The Association of National Advertisers and Chairman of BPA International, the circulation auditing firm. He was Chairman of Junior Achievement of Eastern Massachusetts and served on the JA Board from 1988 to 2008 during which he taught 2nd and 6th grade classes. He serves as a Corporation Member of Mass General Brigham Healthcare System Inc. and is a member of the Newton Wellesley Hospital Board of Trustees.

Steve and his wife, Rebecca, live in Wellesley, MA. They have four grown children. Steve and his wife Rebecca generously provide an annual college scholarship to the chosen JA Student of the Year in the amount of $10,000.

JA School of the Year Lawrence High School JA of Greater Boston enjoys a deep and growing partnership with this year’s JA School of the Year, Lawrence High School.

Through a dedicated team of administrators and Business Pathway teachers and JA’s Programs Team, the partnership grew again in the 2021-22 school year. LHS embodies all that JA envisions in school partnerships. We look forward to many years of impactful partnership with LHS to maximize benefits for LHS students

JA Student of the Year Donald Le Donald is currently a senior at Boston College High School.

Donald’s most successful venture in the JA Company Program “Know Me Know You,” an interactive card game that seeks to tackle the stigma revolving around emotional expression, won first place at the EforAll pitch competition last year.

Donald will be pursuing financial economics and computer science this fall at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. He is this year’s recipient of the $10,000 Steve Sullivan Schollarship.

JA Innovation Center @ RSM The JA Innovation Center @ RSM is the new headquarters and makerspace for JA of Greater Boston. The JA Innovation Center was made possible by the RSM Boston Foundation, who donated the space; Wayfair who donated the furniture; and generous stakeholders who contributed to making this dream a reality.

We are proud to dedicate this space in honor of Bill Schawbel.

The makerspace features the newest technologies for JA’s students to ideate, innovate, and create real products at the culmination of their programs. Use of this space is completely free, and the possibilities of what you can create are endless! Here’s a look at some things our makerspace is equipped with: • • • • • •

Glowforge Plus – laser engraver and cutter able to work with materials from leather to coated metals MakerBot Sketch 3D printer – uses PLA filament to create files created in a CAD program Cricut Explore Air 2 – for easy cutting, scoring and drawing on over 100 different materials, and creation of iron-on designs with the Cricut EasyPress Apple iMac – to edit photos and videos, create designs and presentations Canon Rebel DSLR Cameras & Photo booth – allows students to take photo and video of their products for marketing purposes Handheld tools, Drill Drivers and Tabletop Drill Press – allows students to easily assemble products and precisely drill through materials

Showing students what’s possible Last week, one of our JA Company Program groups had the opportunity to be the first to use our equipment, giving them the chance to get hand-on instruction from an experienced entrepreneur and feel the instant gratification of creating a final product.

Next steps for the JA Innovation Center include public open houses this summer for teachers, youth-serving organizations, and prospective volunteers. We also hope to host local entrepreneur-led workshops for students in the fall. It’s our goal to get all middle and high school students in Greater Boston to maximize the usage of this space!
