Can you give me some exercises I could use during lunge line lessons?

A. Lunge line lessons are one of the fastest and best ways to develop coordination, strength, and timing on a horse. A few words of caution: form is very important and once you have bad habits they are hard to break. From the beginning, decide that you are not going to round your back (slump) or place your weight into your hands—these are very bad habits!

For a good lunge line lesson, start out in two point for several times around at the walk and trot, or until you are feeling a stretch starting at the knee and going down. Two pointing helps you find your balance and drop the weight correctly into your foot.

Still trotting, go ahead and pick up a normal posting rhythm.

Pay attention to the little details. Keep your feet in the correct riding position, with 4

your knees down and tight. As you work your way through your position pay special attention to your upper body. No slumping! Try to keep your rib cage up and your chest open as you continue to post. Be sure your hands are in riding position while posting.

For another exercise, post four times, and then two point for four strides. Keep this rhythm going for several times around. When you need a break, two point for a few times around and then go back into your four and four rhythm.

Once you’ve mastered those, start posting regularly.

Then change your diagonal every

time you post. It’s as simple as sit, sit, post.

The last exercise is changing your diagonal in the air. This is the hardest exercise in the set. To work your way into it, start with this rhythm: post, post, stand up, stay standing. Once you can do this easily, change your rhythm to post, stand up, stay standing. This will change your diagonal as you stay standing.

As you become a stronger rider, move up to doing these exercises without irons. In no time you’ll be ready for that show ring! n

Located in Fulton, MO, William Woods began its equestrian program in 1924. In 1972, WWU was the first school in the country to offer a bachelor’s degree in equestrian science.

Life in the Mounted Patrol When dealing with crowds, one mounted officer is as effective as seven to ten officers on foot. Their high visibility deters crime, and their popularity with the public helps to balance the distrust police departments frequently come up against.

f you are lucky, you have visited a city with a mounted police unit, and have seen its streets patrolled by officers on horseback. If you are very lucky, you live in a city with a mounted unit. But no matter how many times you have seen them, every time you get a chance to see a squad ride down the street you will probably stop to stand and watch.

There is something really special about a mounted police unit.

They perform a unique and valuable service for everything from crowd control to community relations. It has been said many times: no one ever asks to pet a police car.

The oldest police departments were made up of officers both walking the beat and on horseback. Baltimore has the oldest mounted unit, started in 1888. The three largest cities in the country–New York, Los Angeles and Chicago–all have mounted squads.

We put questions about police life from the back

Horse & Academy: How many officers and how many horses do you have in your unit?

Sgt. Wills: We currently have 28 Officers assigned to our unit and three Civilian Stable Attendants. We have 32 horses of all different breeds and colors.

Sgt. Roberts: We have nine total: eight Officers and one Sergeant. We currently have 10 horses, but have the capability of maintaining a maximum of 12. All of the horses are donated to the police department and are trained in-house.

H&A: Do you get assigned to the same horse all the time?

Sgt. Wills: Officers do have regularly assigned horses that they ride on a daily basis. If something hap-

pens to their horse (like being sick or injured) we have other horses for them to ride until their horse is back active again.

Sgt. Roberts: Each officer is assigned a horse based on several different factors such as: size, riding ability and riding style.

There are occasions when a horse may have thrown a shoe or have an injury preventing him from deployment, which would require an officer to ride another horse.

H&A: Who takes care of feeding and grooming the horses?

Sgt. Wills: Until last year we had a full Civilian Staff that did all of the feeding and grooming.

Due to budget cuts they were all laid off and the officers began the stable management. We have now hired back three stable attendants, but the officers continue to assist.

Sgt. Roberts: The maintenance of the facility, including all horse care,

is conducted by the officers and Sergeant within the section.

H&A: Did all of the mounted police ride horses when they were growing up?

Sgt. Wills: Actually many of the officers have never ridden when they apply.

It is not a prerequisite.

The only prerequisite is that they are top-notch police officers. I can teach them how to ride. Everyone goes through a minimum eight weeks of basic training, with monthly updates.

Sgt. Roberts: Some of the officers have a background in riding, and some have no prior riding experience. Once assigned to the section, each officer is taught equitation specifically geared towards mounted police work.

H&A: What additional training does someone interested in being a mounted patrol need?

Sgt. Wills: They must be serious police officers with a great work ethic:

good integrity, high motivation, able to care for horses, and here in Houston, be able to work in all types of weather, especially the heat. There is no air conditioner on that horse.

Sgt. Roberts: An officer must first complete a minimum of three years in a patrol assignment.

We conduct weekly unit training sessions where I invite interested candidates to participate. This allows me the opportunity to evaluate ability and comfort level prior to completion of the selection process.

H&A: Do you have an interesting story you could share?

Sgt. Wills: Ninety percent of our horses are donated to us by individuals. Many times it is because the horse is too much for them; “crazy” is the word donors often use. In one case, I was riding a donated horse in front of its donor, through flares, over a jump, over a teeter board, and around the course. The horse was calm and confident throughout. At the end, the donor looked at me and said that none of her horses would have done that.

I turned to her and said, ‘This is your horse.”

Sgt. Roberts: Four Mounted Patrol officers were patrolling when a call came that someone was shooting a firearm in a nearby park. We trotted to the area and observed a large crowd in some chaos. We contacted officers on the ground and they relayed that several individuals were seen getting into a white SUV. We cantered through the park and observed a white SUV leaving in a hurry. We stopped the SUV, and observed three males inside the vehicle.

We got the individuals out and had them lie on the ground until ground

officers arrived to take them into custody. While waiting, we observed a head pop up from inside the vehicle behind the rear seat. We were at an elevated position; an officer on the ground could not have seen it from the side because the SUV had tinted windows. We then discovered four others in the back lying on top of two rifles and a handgun.

All parties were taken into custody and the situation was resolved. The horses allowed us to be where we needed to be. n

Getting Ready for College

This month, Horse & Academy has two respected equine education leaders sharing their advice with riders interested in getting a degree in equine studies.

oing to college may seem way off in the future, but preparing to go into equine studies starts early. This isn’t a course for the faint hearted—determination, focus, a sense of competition and passion are what it takes to get into a school with a major in equine studies.

Gayle Lampe is the Adjunct Professor at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, and author of the national best seller, Riding For Success: Both In & Out of the Showring. She was also chosen

by Ingram’s Magazine as an “Icon of Education” in their January 2012 issue. She says, “You need a lot of discipline,” when going to school to find a career working with horses.

With 41 years of teaching experience, Lampe has worked with many young girls finding their way in “the field.” “Nothing takes the place of experience,” she says. “Take riding lessons on as many different horses as you can and spend as much time working and watching trainers as you can.”

My horse has these scab like bumps on his legs, around the back of his pastern area. What is this and what should I do about it?

A: It sounds like your horse has a case of “scratches,” also known as pastern dermatitis. Scratches is due to a bacteria or fungus on the horse’s skin that creates an infection. This condition looks like scabs on the horse’s legs usually around the back of the pastern and fetlock area, but severe cases can cause skin problems up to the carpus (knee) and hock.

Scratches most commonly occurs to horses kept outside for long periods of time in wet, muddy paddocks, or those stalled in wet or dirty stalls. The most important thing to do to prevent and treat scratches is to make sure the horse is kept in a dry stall or turn out pen.

Scratches is a condition that must be treated—it won’t go away on its own. In fact, lack of treatment will

make the problem worse. It can be a frustrating problem as some cases are difficult to treat. A severe infection can lead to swelling of the af-

come an ideal living environment for the fungus or bacteria that is creating the problem, so clipping the affected area is recommended.

The area should be gently washed with an antibacterial solution to help remove the scabs (this may be a slightly painful procedure for the horse as scratches can be very irritating.) After the scabs are softened and removed, the skin needs to be completely dry before applying medication. Any moisture will allow bacteria to thrive, exactly the opposite of what you want to accomplish.

After the skin is dry, apply a topical cream or ointment over the area to try and eliminate the infection.

There are many different treatment creams or ointments for scratches, with an antibiotic to kill bacteria and a steroid to help decrease the swelling. Ask your veterinarian what topical product they recommend for the treatment of scratches. n

How Do You Feel About Going Back to School I am excited about going back to school because I get to see my friends and talk to them about the fun stuff that we did over summer break. I am also excited because I am starting middle school, which means that I am in a new building. I will not have to walk up four flights of stairs with a heavy backpack to get to class anymore. I will get to meet new people to talk to and have fun with. I am also happy because we are getting our own lockers instead of sharing, that we can talk at lunch the whole time, and that lunch time is longer than 30 minutes. I am happy we can have snacks every day and not just on Friday.

These are the reasons I am excited to go back to school. Faith

My fave part of going back to school is seeing all of my friends that I didn’t get to see over summer. One of the weird things I like about going back to school is that I love shopping for school supplies and other things that you need for school. But I don’t like getting up early for school and I don’t like doing homework. I will be going into seventh grade this year. I found out when getting ready for my sixth grade year that decorating the inside of my locker is really fun! It was really sad to take all of it down at the end of the year, though.

Hallie My favorite part about going back to school is seeing my friends and meeting new teachers.

The teachers are a big part of how much I like or dislike a class. If I have a teacher that appeals to me, I’ll be excited to go to class, and in turn, learn more. If there’s a teacher I dislike, I won’t be as happy to go to class, and I’ll probably not pay as much attention as I should!

This year I’m finally going to high school. I am excited to explore my new school, but I might have a more difficult time than usual trying to find my classes and get familiar with the surroundings.

All I can say is, challenge accepted.

Lauren Going back to school can be hard after a long summer and can be a nerve-racking experience for some, but it can also be a lot of fun. You get many new opportunities, whether it’s sports, helping the community, or showing off your inner talent! My favorite parts about going back to school are that I get to meet my new teachers and see my friends again. Sure, school has its down sides, but after a long day of working hard I like to know that I will get to go to the barn and ride.

The beginning of the school year is always the busiest time for me. I have to be at school at 7am for marching band then after school I stay till 6:30 and help out at football practice. When I get home I change and go to the barn to practice for Morgan Nationals in October. When I get home, all my time is spent on homework and studying.

It is a busy time of year but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have learned that the small time I get to spend with friends and family is greatly cherished and I try to never waste it.

When football season and show season stresses finally vanish, it is nice to relax for a while but I am always so excited for what next year will bring. This year is my senior year and I am going to hold on to every moment and stay as busy as possible with fun and Ryenn friends – and of course, horses!

There are so many exciting things about going back to school after a great summer! I personally love seeing all my friends that I have not seen since the end of the last year. The start of school is the perfect time to talk to your friends about all the things you did over the summer. Also, you get to see how much they have changed! I have had friends that have grown their hair out, gotten a tan and/or gotten braces over the summer, and they look so different I barely recognize them. Another favorite of going back to school is that my schedule changes. This means I will be going to sports practices on different days and seeing different people. Getting to have a different teacher is also a great part of going back to school. I love getting to know all the teachers in school. Even though school means homework, there are many exciting parts of going back!

Ezri My favorite part of going back to school is seeing all of my friends in the same place and at the same time. This year is different; it is the beginning of the end. I am so excited to be a senior, the leader of the school, with senior privileges. I also actually get really excited about wearing the tartan plaid uniform because I don’t have to choose what to wear. I am never too eager to start the actual work, but it is nice to reestablish a routine. The start of school also means Emma dances and parties. WOOOO class of 2013!!!!!!

First, I am excited about seeing my friends and old teachers. Second, I want to get to know the new kids and teachers. Third, I want to see my classroom. Finally, I like moving up to a new grade, and this year I’m one year closer to 6th grade, when we get new uniform shirt colors and classrooms. These are the reasons I am excited about going back to school this year. Oh, and I don’t want to forget about homework!

Tips for Balancing Horseback Riding and School One tip is that you do homework first if you have a lot because homework is more important than riding (yes, it really is) and if there is time, ride after your homework.

My mom sometimes has the horses up and ready for me when I get home from school so I can get a short ride in while the sun is still up, as long as I don’t have too much homework. Sometimes I save time by just riding bareback so I don’t have to drag out all my tack. My next tip is to ride on the weekends or days off school so you don’t have any homework to deal with. Faith I usually don’t go out to the barn during the school week, but when I do occasionally, I take my homework in the car and do it on the way there!

By the time we do get home, I would be too tired to do homework anyway, so doing homework in the car works out great! Then, on the way home we stop at a fast food place and eat when we get home.

The only homework I can’t do in the car involves reading a chapter out of a book. So then, I read the chapter during free time I have in classes during the day.

Hallie Balancing horseback riding and school is pretty easy for me because I like to keep busy and do many other extra-curricular activities out of school, too. I think staying busy with hobbies makes for a better student, keeping me out of trouble. I have a better sense of focus due to multi-tasking and know how to manage my time. Keeping busy doing activities I love is the relaxing part that balances everything for me, because it’s just what I like to do!

As a horse rider, or any other athlete, it is critical to balance school, sports, family, sleep, and a social life. It is often extremely difficult and discouraging trying to fit everything in.

Here are some tips to a balanced life: 1) Get in a habit at the beginning of the year. On the days I don’t ride I go home and have a thirty-minute break to unwind from the day. Then I work on homework. I eat dinner, and try to go to bed as early as possible. 2) Prioritize.

Sometimes you’ll have to miss a party or lesson to spend time with family, catch up on sleep or schoolwork. 3) Eat healthy.

Food is brain and body power.

4) Don’t let yourself get too run down, you’re only human.

Emma Managing horseback riding AND school can be difficult, but there are many ways to fit them both in. Some tips and tricks that I have learned (and do myself) are to carry around the assignments from your classes and do them whenever you have extra time.

Sometimes if I have a lot to do, I eat lunch quickly and go to the library to finish up my homework/assignments. Or I complete my work while eating in the cafeteria. Hope this helped!

Madison Try to get as much homework done at school as you can. If you don’t have time at school, try to get it done before you head out to the barn. You really don’t want to come home from the barn and still have a lot of homework. Trust me, I’ve been there! You don’t want to wake up feeling exhausted with a long day of school and horseback riding afterwards ahead of you. Again, I’ve been there!

Waiting for My Hay...

A new school year means changes at the barn for Goldie and his friends.

hings were very busy at the barn this summer! My riders were here almost every day, and it is quiet now that everyone is back in school. I do miss my human friends, but I will still get to see them in the evenings and on the weekends. Plus, now I have more time to talk to you!

We have some other changes here, as well. Some riders have just started and some are moving up to more difficult horses.

Let me tell you about a new rider first: Mary has never ridden before, so she will start with Fred.

You may remember from a few months ago that Fred takes care of beginning riders. He is nice and

that’s the way it goes! Michelle will still show me this season, but will move up to a tougher horse to practice on here at home. She will start riding Dolly soon. I’m very proud of Michelle for moving up to Dolly, because that horse is tough. It takes a lot of experience to ride her. Some of the lessexperienced riders get upset if a younger rider gets to ride Dolly before they do, but the instructor knows what she is doing. It’s not about how old or big you are, it’s about how much riding experience you have. So you need to listen to the instructor when it comes to which horse you ride. It doesn’t hurt to ask to ride a tougher horse,

next season! I’m excited to work with her. She seems like a great girl—she comes out to the barn even when she doesn’t have a lesson, just so she can help out. She has learned a lot about horses by working with them on the ground.

Ella, of course, is very excited to ride me, but it does make my human friend Michelle a bit sad. She will have to share me now. It is hard for some of the riders to have to share their favorite horse, but

Once she gets her balance, she will start learning to trot. Fred is really looking forward to helping her learn. He likes teaching beginners the best, since he is getting older and likes to take it easy.

Then there is Jenny. She has been riding Fred for a few months now and has learned all of the basic skills, so she is moving up to ride my good friend Barney. He will teach her better balance, and

how to tell a horse what she wants him to do. You see, Fred took such good care of Jenny that she doesn’t really know how to respond when a horse doesn’t automatically start trotting when she says the word “trot.” Barney will teach Jenny that she has to be firm and really let the horse know she is in charge.

He will still baby her a little, but give her a challenge, too. That is why he is so good at what he does!

Barney has a current rider, Ella, who will start riding me soon. Ella started riding about a year ago, and she has worked hard to learn how to ride Fred and Barney. Now she is doing so well the instructor told her she will get to show me

but if she says no, don’t pester her about it. She knows what is best for you and the horses.

I will miss having everyone around as much, so I hope you work hard in school and get your homework done so you can come see me in the afternoon. Otherwise it will be pretty quiet around here…until dinnertime, anyway.

The French Saddle Horse: le Cheval de Selle Français

An example of another European country’s response to a need for a lighter, faster sport horse.

lthough le Cheval de Selle Français (the “French Saddle Horse,” in English) didn’t officially become a breed until 1958, it began developing as a warmbloodtype at French government stud farms in the 1800s. After World War II was over, there was much less need for farm and military horses, so attention turned to breeding saddle horses. When the horses coming from many different districts started to resemble each other, the French government stepped in and brought them all together under the name le Cheval de Selle Français.

The name is generally shortened to Selle Français, and in case you don’t speak French, it’s pronounced, “SELL fron SAY.” This breed is actually the result of hundreds of years of testing and fine-tuning the perfect national racehorse by the French. Even the method of grading horses for breeding Selle Français has less to do with breed type and blood lines than is typical of most other breeds.

USEF High School Equestrian Athlete Program

Equestrian student athletes are now able to get the recognition and respect they deserve for their long hours of training and competition.

etterman jackets and varsity letters have long been a tradition of the American high school experience, but until recently, equestrian student athletes were left out in the cold. Today’s equestrians now have more opportunities to compete on interscholastic equestrian teams, and thanks to the United States Equestrian Federation’s increasingly popular High School Equestrian Athlete program, teens can earn their letter in equestrian.

The USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program began in the fall of 2009 when a growing number of high school students wanted their sport of choice—equestrian—to get the same recognition as the other traditionally recognized sports.

“What initiated the program,” says Jennifer Mellenkamp, Director of National Breed/Discipline Affiliates and Youth Programs at the USEF, “was simply supply and demand. We were receiving phone calls from parents asking, ‘is there anything offered that would recognize high school equestrian athletes? They spend just as much time training or competing as football and basketball players,’” recalls Mellenkamp.

The program quickly found its stride, and the response has been 16

overwhelming. “Right now we have nearly 5,000 students enrolled,” says Mellenkamp. “Par-

ents have told us the school systems don’t understand the training and dedication that is involved to be an equestrian athlete,” adds Mellenkamp, “and there is often no recognition for these athletes within their school systems. We felt we needed to start something to give all equestrian athletes the acknowledgement they deserve.”

The USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program was created so students could receive

recognition for their individual achievements regardless of their school recognition of equestrian as a sport. Students are responsible for tracking their own hours and competitions, which means support of the program by a student’s school is not necessary for participation.

Individuals who compete interscholastically can use their team practice hours and competitions to meet the annual requirements. The program provides schools with updates and information about the students. “We’re hoping this will initiate conversations with the schools,” says Mellenkamp, “and that they will start taking notice of the equestrians that are enrolled.”

The requirements for the USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program are simple: high school students must belong to USEF, log at least 100 hours of time training, and participate in three competitions during the program year. If you are currently enrolled in grades 9-12 and just now hearing about the program, it’s not too late to get started and earn a letter for all four years! The program has been expanded to allow any current high school student the opportunity to earn a varsity letter retroactively. You can even

USEF Equestrian College Search get started in the middle of the program year, which runs from June 1 through May 31, and use hours and competitions from before you enrolled.

The benefits of the program reach far beyond the varsity letterman patch, lapel pin, and Certificate of Achievement students receive upon completing the program.

Laura Orr of Topsail Beach, NC completed all four years of the program and described it as “an avenue through which kids in the equestrian sport can verify the time, sweat, hard work, victories and losses they have experienced as part of the world of horses.

It’s how the girl who takes her math assignments to every show, the young man that spends his time between classes studying Chemistry, and the homeschooled kid can be part of something bigger than themselves.”

Skylar Rowan of Knoxville, TN was another student enrolled in the program. When asked what the USEF

High School Equestrian Athlete program meant to her, Rowan responded, “What the (program) has given to me is validation and recognition from those who truly understand this amazing sport. By earning my varsity letter every year, I can also say to the world that I am an athlete... not just the girl who leaves school every day to ‘ride horses.’ Riding is my life, my passion and my sport. Yes, it would be great if my school was able to recognize me in the way that they do the other student athletes.

But because of the USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program, I now feel every bit as empowered as those that parade across the stage each May to pick up a letter.”

The Search is an online tool designed to inform students of the different opportunities available when looking for equestrian programs or teams at the college level. The Search asks students questions about what they are looking for in a school – everything from population of the student body, school location, academic interests, and equestrian endeavors. As each question is answered, the Search matches the criteria to qualifying schools, narrowing the list for the student. The first impression is really good, nice horse and well turned out rider, but looking closely there are a few problems. First is the pumpkin colored saddle. It detracts from the beautiful bay horse and rider. Stain the saddle a darker color…before the next show!

Also, the “underskirt” or seat flap is poking forward of the saddle which is unattractive. I don’t like the look of that much saddle pad in front of the saddle, but if it is necessary to prevent wither sores, leave it there.

I would like to see the rider’s heel a little lower. If her jods were longer I wouldn’t have noticed that.

Her lower leg is in a good position and she appears to be posting the correct height for the motion of the horse.

The rider’s hands appear to be excellent. They

seem to have a very good line of communication with the horse’s mouth. The horse is very pretty and has great expression with his ears. If his left front cannon bone and his right rear cannon bone were parallel to each other, it would show a really true square trot.

The rider is leaning slightly too far forward.

Here is where I would really fault this rider. She is looking down at her horse rather than where she is going. She just won her class and should be looking up with a proud appearance acknowledging her victory.

Keep winning blue ribbons! The horse looks fun to ride and the rider looks like she is having a good time. It doesn’t get any better than that!
