Give it a try; just be sure you don’t rely on your handlebars to get up off of the bike when posting.

The more “traditional” way to improve balance is through oldfashioned exercise. You might practice squats and lunges, standing on one leg, different Pilates movements, climbing up steps, and even using an exercise ball to do crunches and inner thigh squeezes. Get a DVD, take a class, or

Some of the common faults are: leaning too far back, slouching in the saddle, feet too far forward, and hey, put your heels down! Do any of those ring a bell?

Even when lunge line lessons aren’t an option, practicing balance is still an important part of your training. Just for fun, I have asked some of my equitation riders to practice patterns using their bikes. The rules were they had to post as the pattern directed, change diagonals as intended, and of course hit their points precisely! This is an entertaining way to learn patterns while you

ask someone to walk you through the proper form for the exercises you want to try. Good form is the key to your progress and safety.

When you’re riding, think about breaking your body into a “balance checklist.” Here is the one we use: Toes up Heels down Weight in the arch of your foot Knees down and bent

don’t have an instructor, figure out what part of your body “wiggles” the most. If it’s your legs, start at your foot and work through the checklist. The general rule of thumb for a good solid seat is “lower body back and upper body forward.”

Good balance doesn’t come overnight, but it will come. Keep practicing, and have fun! n

The Amazing Story of Neville Bardos

B

The United States Equestrian Federation named its short-listed Olympic three-day event team for the 2012 London Olympics, and Neville Bardos is on the list. You won’t believe his story.

y the time he was three, Neville Bardos’ unimpressive racing career was over. He was put up for sale and it looked like he would end at the slaughterhouse. Then along came Boyd Martin, an Australian rider and trainer who saw something in the Australian thoroughbred, and bought him for $850. After getting off to a rocky start, Neville went on to place 1st at the Melbourne CCI in 2006, 1st at the Fair Hill CCI in 2009 and 4th at the Rolex Kentucky CCI in 2010. Neville’s comeback was looking good.

By this time Neville, Boyd, and Boyd’s wife Silva had moved to the United States. Boyd and Neville were highly ranked by the FEI, with hopes for the future.

Then came the late night call on Memorial Day 2011 – the barn Neville lived in with 10 other horses was burning.

By the time Boyd arrived Neville had been trapped inside the blaze for close to an hour. Boyd

ran past the firefighters and led Neville out of the barn just minutes before the roof collapsed. Fortunately, firefighters had already rescued four other horses from the fire.

Neville was almost dead, with extreme car-

bon monoxide levels and terrible injuries to his lungs and throat from the smoke. He was taken to a veterinary hospital and treated daily in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Five weeks after the fire that almost killed a u g u st 2 0 1 2

Neville, Boyd got on him for a walk that quickly turned into a canter. His rapid recovery left everyone involved in his care amazed. Neville was coming back; there was no doubt about it.

Three months after the fire, Neville and Boyd finished 7th at the Burghley Horse Trials in England, one of the toughest three day competitions in the world. This put Neville back on the path to the 2012 Olympic Games. Along the way he was also named the US Equestrian Federation International Horse of the Year for 2011.

Not bad for a horse that had been uncomfortably close to death – twice.

The story isn’t over yet! At press time, Neville and Boyd continue to train and compete for the Olympics. The U.S three-day event team will be named on July 2.

2012 Equestrian Olympics in London The Equestrian schedule at the 2012 London Olympics will be: Eventing: July 28 – July 31 Dressage: August 2 – August 9 Jumping: August 4 – August 8 You can catch all the action on NBC.

his summer, Olympic organizers predict there will be 200 equestrians, along with their horses, in London’s Greenwich Park for the 2012 Olympic Equestrian Games. These athletes will be riding to win one of only six gold medals awarded over the entire twelve day Equestrian competition. Each of the three disciplines gets a chance at only two gold medals; one for its team event and one for its in-

dividual event.

The three disciplines offer very different challenges to both riders and horses. The format of both team and individual Eventing features dressage, cross-country, and a grandstand jumping finale. Scores are cumulative across all three phases, with the best total determining the Individual and Team winners.

Dressage is based on a series of movements (patterns) the horses and

riders perform known as a Dressage test. These tests are performed before a panel of seven judges, who award scores for individual movements as well as for the overall routine. Dressage consists of both a Team event and an Individual event that are conducted at the same time, and a rider’s score for a specific test will apply to both events. While Team event medals are decided on the total of scores

in the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special, the Individuals with the best scores go on to the Grand Prix Freestyle based on their performance in the Grand Prix Special only.

It is how riders perform in the Grand Prix Freestyle that determines who gets the medals in the Individual event.

Compared to the complexity of Dressage, the format of Show Jumping sounds almost, well, like a walk in Greenwich

Reed Kessler: Headed to 2012 London

Reed Kessler took time out from her equestrian training schedule to answer Horse & Academy’s questions about life as an Olympic contender. Since then, Reed and Cylana have been selected to represent the U. S. Olympic show jumping team at the 2012 London Games. Horse & Academy is rooting for you, Reed! Go Team USA!

When did you start riding?

I was 6 months old — hard to believe, I know! My parents put me in a basket on my pony Shasha, tied my stuffed animals in trees, and that’s how I learned to steer.

You ride two horses, Cylana and Mika.

How are they different?

I’d say they’re just about polar opposites! Mika came to us very nervous a few years ago and through coddling and spoiling, he has b e c o m e much more confident.

He wants to be loved and played with.

Cylana, on the other hand, is not so cuddly in the barn. She is happiest when she is at the ring competing. Any time she spends in her stall is torture; she just wants to show. She can be a real land shark at home. Even though she’s only been doing 1.60-meter jumps for a few months now, she has no idea that they are any bigger or more difficult than what she’s done before.

What is your training schedule?

We don’t have a set training schedule. It depends on the time of year, what show we’re heading to next, where we’ve just come from, and which horse it is. To prepare for Kentucky, my trainer Katie Prudent gave me a lesson on each horse over some small exercises mainly to get me sharp.

Then came a day of flatwork, then a day jumping a little bit bigger — around 1.30-meters, to ease the horses into jumping more significantly, followed by another day of flatwork, with one last day over a large course so the horses knew we were about to compete.

Do you do any cross training?

Yes, in Florida I have a personal trainer three nights a week. When I’m on my own, I try to hit the gym every other day.

Is it hard to keep up with school?

It can be difficult but luckily I go to a fantastic school in Manhattan called Professional Children’s School. It’s a school for “kids with

Tips for a Great Trail Ride

Whether it’s your first trail ride or your 51st, here are some rules hard core riders say you should follow.

• Helmets save lives – wear yours!

• Wear pants, and boots with short heels.

• Tell someone at home where you are going and when you expect to be back.

• Take water, a cell phone, sunscreen, insect repellant, and a hoof pick. Keep your cell phone in your pocket in case your horse takes off without you.

• Pick strong riders for the front and back of the group.

• Go the speed of the greenest horse or the least experienced rider.

• Wait until all riders are mounted to move off.

• Keep a horse’s length between riders to avoid kicking.

• Warn the rider behind you of low branches, stumps, holes, hornets’ nests or other hazards.

• If caught in a lightening storm, find low ground and get off your horse! Take tack with lots of metal on it off your horse, too.

• Stick to the trail and stay with the group.

Waiting for My Hay...

s I was standing and waiting for my hay, I suddenly realized that I’ve never talked to you about my human friends here at the barn! I’ve told you about the other horses, but not the people. I think introducing you to all my people would be a good way to pass the time while I wait for my hay.

First and most important to me is the stable hand. Why do I think he is so important? Well, I’m a horse and I like to eat. I like to have a clean stall to lie down in, too. I like my water bucket kept fresh and full all the time. That’s what the stable hand does all day long: takes care

She reminded me that my job is to stay on the rail, and now I do.

I try to be good... most of the time, anyway. The trainer also breaks the colts. That means she teaches young horses to be led, ridden and to have manners. The trainer goes to the shows during the summer.

She is in charge of managing the grooms, too.

of my basic needs. That is why I love him.

I also have a groom. She takes care of me and does things like giving me a thorough grooming every day before and after my workout.

She puts hoof grease on my feet to keep them soft and gives me a good, strong brushing so my coat is healthy and shiny. My groom goes with me to horse shows and sleeps in a stall, just to watch over me! She braids my tail and talks to me. I love my groom.

Both the stable hand and the groom are my most special people, but there are many other humans in the barn. One is the barn man-

10

ager. He is in charge of the whole barn! He has a huge job — he orders hay and grain, manages the stable hands, keeps the tractors in good shape, and pays the bills. He spends a lot of time at the barn and works hard. He doesn’t even get to go to shows unless one is in town.

Then he takes his family to cheer and support the riders. When we go to out of town shows, the barn manager stays home to make sure everything runs smoothly while we are gone.

Another person at the barn all the time is the riding instructor. She gives early morning lessons, and

some late night lessons as well, so everyone can ride when they want.

Because she uses me for lots of riding lessons, she oversees my care.

I’m her favorite (just don’t tell my horse friends!) She makes sure I don’t work too hard. She gives me a day off sometimes so my groom can take me out and let me play in the pasture. That is so much fun! When we go to shows, the riding instructor keeps everyone organized and ready to go in the ring on time.

Then there is the trainer, who doesn’t ride me much, since I already know my stuff. Her job is to train the green show horses and maybe school a few lesson horses

the farrier comes to take care of my hooves. He comes about once a month and it is always nice to see him. He gives me peppermints if I stand very still while he trims my feet and puts my shoes back on.

The veterinarian is another person who comes to see me. She gives me vaccinations to make sure I stay healthy. Once, she came in the middle of the night when I had a stomachache! I really appreciated that.

Everyone takes such good care of me here at the barn.

Now here comes my most favorite person — the stable hand, of course — because he is bringing my hay! I’ll talk to you later. n

Summer Survival Guide

When it comes to helping your horse beat the summer heat, you have to think smart: start with lots of water, always keep the air circulating, and monitor your horse’s condition for safe passage through the heat of summer.

Here is Horse & Academy’s summer survival guide for horses. Follow it during these dog days of summer for your horse’s safety, health and comfort. Your horse will thank you!

There is nothing more important than providing plenty of fresh water for your horse at all times. Green water is not good water; wash water buckets and troughs often to keep algae from growing in them. If you don’t think your horse is drinking as much as he should, you can add electrolytes into the water bucket to replace sodium and potassium he has lost, and help him retain fluids better.

Always read the instructions on the container first.

Keep salt and mineral blocks where your horse can get to them. Horses do a great job of monitoring their mineral needs by themselves when these are provided.

Be sure your horse is on a regular deworming schedule through the year. Summer is one of the most active times for parasite loads to increase in horses. Did you know parasites can cause severe and even fatal colic episodes? Talk with your vet to discuss the best plan for your area.

If your stable does not have an automatic fly spray system, you will need to spray your horse with fly spray at least once every day to decrease the stomping your horse does throughout the day. Keep the stall and turn out area clean and free of manure to reduce flies.

Try night turn out for your horse. He’ll be lots cooler!

Give your horse a quick shower on the hot days. Use lukewarm water to hose or sponge your horse off. This will remove the sweaty grime and keep him comfortable, too!

Safely hang a fan on your horse’s stall to help keep the air circulating.

Work your horse early in the morning or later in the evening to help keep him cool. When cooling out after riding, take your time. You’ll want your horse to have a completely normal respiration rate before cutting him loose. Also, check back in on the horse as he cools out.

Some horses are prone to reheating.

Horses sunburn, too! If your horse has white markings on his face, you should consider putting 30 spf sunscreen (the same stuff you use) on those areas.

You’ll know if he has gotten sunburned if he has raw patches and peeling skin — just like us!

Take care of yourself, too! Make sure you dress appropriately to work around animals and handle the heat. Don’t forget your sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.

Did you know?

Some horses have an inability to sweat, called Anhidrosis. It can affect horses of all breeds and ages. These horses do not have ordinary means of eliminating the body heat they produce, and must be worked very cautiously during hot weather. Consult your veterinarian if you suspect your horse has Anhidrosis. a u g u st 2 0 1 2

If you are just joining us, the last two articles have focused on what is traditionally called the “core.”

Today I want to try an equipment free alternative to s t re n g t h e n i n g your upper back down to Standing Wall Slide “W” your back end, also known as your “glutes.” This area contains tons of connective tissue that enables you to sit tall in the saddle, and it is crucial to properly train and strengthen it to get maximum performance from your core.

Belgian Warmbloods: Bred to Perform

C

A new breed from the old world.

ompared to many horse breeds, the Belgian Warmblood is a “new” breed. Even though Germany, France, and the Netherlands had been producing elegant riding horses for hundreds of years, breeders in Belgium weren’t allowed to breed saddle horses until the 1950s.This is because the government wanted to protect the bloodlines of the Belgian draft horse.

Then in 1953, the first stallion show for riding horses took place, even though it was still illegal to breed riding horses in Belgium! The Belgian Warmblood Studbook (BWP) was founded a few years later, in 1955.

In the early years, Belgian breeders had to import mares and stallions, developing an entirely new riding horse using Thoroughbreds, Holsteiners, Selle Français, Hanoverians and Dutch Warmbloods. A Belgian Warmblood is not characterized by pedigree or appearance but by suitability for a purpose: sport jumping.

General characteristics of the Belgian Warmblood include excellent trainability, good character, and strong health.

The studbook requires that they have a “rectangular frame, big outlines and good basic paces” and “be pleasant to ride and have an unobjectionable character.”

The only way to positively identify a Belgian Warmblood is to look for the breed brand on a horse’s left thigh: a circle

made up of the head and neck of four horses. Stallions receive this brand during their foal inspection, when they are presented to a jury for a stallion licensing test.

This test consists of a veterinary inspection, an evaluation of conformation and jumping ability without a rider, as well as an evaluation under the saddle. Mares are also evaluated, but judgment of a mare’s qualities as a riding horse is elective. a u g u st 2 0 1 2

Only foals deemed free of obvious defects are eligible for the studbook and get branded. To keep their status in the studbook, stallions must participate in competitions for young show jumping horses called the “Classic Cycle.”

The motto of the Belgian Warmblood is “Bred to Perform,” and a primary breeding aim of the BWP is performance in show jumping.

Olympic show jumpers include Big Ben (1984), Darco (1992), Egano (1992), Jus De Pomme (1992), Joli Couer (1996), and Sapphire (2008). Belgian Warmbloods have also excelled at Olympic eventing; Britt was an Olympian in eventing in 1992. The breed’s participation and influence has even spread to Olympic dressage.

Comanche, Equine Survivor of Little Bighorn

O

Not every tale is told in the history books. Here is the true story of Comanche, the only survivor found at the battle site of Custer’s Last Stand.

n June 25, 1876, General George Custer led a detachment from the US Army’s 7th Cavalry into battle near the Little Bighorn River in eastern Montana Territory. Many of the soldiers of the 7th Calvary came from Ft. Riley, Kansas, including one by the name of Captain Myles Keogh. Before he left Kansas for the Territories, Captain Keogh paid $90 for a horse named Comanche. Only one of them would return to Kansas.

The outcome of the Battle of Little Bighorn is known to most: every soldier with Custer was killed. The 268 dead included Custer, two of his own brothers, his brother-in-law, and a nephew.

It did not include the horse named Comanche.

Comanche was found in a ravine two days after

the battle. The horse had 20 bullet wounds, and was desperately close to death. His rescuers were

dedicated to tending his wounds, and Comanche made a full recovery.

Officially retired from active service, Comanche lead ceremonial parades and served as a symbol of Custer’s “last stand.” He lived with the 7th Cavalry until his death in 1889.

For over 100 years, people have flocked to the Kentucky State Fair, home of the World’s Championship Horse Show.

It is widely believed to be the richest and most prestigious Saddlebred show in the world.

he World’s Championship is one of three horse shows that make up the Saddlebred “Triple Crown.” The other two are the Lexington Junior League in Lexington, Kentucky and the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri. The World’s Championship began in 1902 and has been going ever since, with only two breaks. The first one came in 1904 when no state fair was held. The second break came in 1945, when the fair was cancelled after atom bombs were dropped during

World War II, leading to the surrender of Japan and the end of the war.

My horse is 17 years old and has never had a dental exam. Is having my horse’s teeth “floated” really that important?

A: Absolutely!

Dental work is as important for your horse as it is for you! A horse’s teeth are quite different from our teeth. The equine tooth continues to grow throughout the life of a horse. They are called “hypsodont teeth” and erupt 3-4mm per year. Your horse is able to keep his teeth ground down through regular chewing action, every time he eats. However, major problems can arise if your horse lacks a normal occlusal surface (the part where the top and bottom teeth meet and food is chewed.) An abnormal occlusal surface can occur when your horse is missing teeth or has an uneven chewing surface. These types of issues will usually result 20

Book Club Heather has a dream about a Morgan that could turn into a nightmare.

t is the first day of a new semester at school, and 15-year-old Heather Richardson wakes up to the same strange dream she has had many times before. In the dream, she struggles to rescue a big black Morgan stallion from a barn. But each time she and the horse named Blackjack have a chance to make it to safety, her alarm goes off and makes escape impossible once again.

Heather doesn’t own a horse, but she loves them fiercely. She is astonished when later that day a random conversation with Chauncy, her new school bus driver, leads to a discovery that

he owns a horse farm with fourteen Morgans. Their conversation results in an invitation from Chauncy to Heather and her parents. Heather is overjoyed when her parents agree to pay a visit to Chauncy’s horse farm.

While in the barn meeting the horses, Heather is stunned to come face to face with Blackjack, the Morgan from her dreams.

Chauncy has named him Gallant Image, and he is a three-year-old stallion with a halfmoon tuft of white hair on his forehead.

Chauncy offers Heather a job in the barn. In return she gets to ride

the horses and learn from Chauncy’s experience. Over the next few months, they work to break through an emotional scar that has been holding the big stallion back. Together, they take Blackjack to win the futurity championship for three-year-old horses.

Summer is coming and the future looks bright!

Disaster strikes the horse farm when Chauncy has a heart attack and needs medical care and a long period of recuperation.

Chauncy and his family have no choice but to put the horses up for sale at auction. This helps with medical expenses,

and relieves Chauncy of the burden of worrying and caring for the horses as he recovers. But it is a decision with devastating consequences for Heather.

Who is your role model?

My biggest role model is Beezie Madden. She trained with my coach, Katie Prudent, so she’s the model of what following Katie’s program can make you. Beyond being one of the biggest talents the sport has ever seen, Beezie epitomizes what it means to be a professional. I also really look up to Mclain Ward. He has this amazing way of making something perfect every time — he makes a plan and executes it.

What do you think is an important ingredient (other than the right horse) for a rider to reach Olympic level potential?

I think it takes an extreme level of dedication.

George Morris always says there are several criteria that make up a great rider, including talent and motivation. Surprisingly, talent is what he always says is the least important. I think drive is probably my greatest attribute. I’ve always known this is what I wanted to do, and no matter how many times

I’ve looked silly or made dumb mistakes, I don’t care because it has been in the pursuit of becoming a great rider. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do — not go to prom, hang out with friends, or go to college — just become the best rider I can be. I completely devote myself to it.

I guess you could say my other profession is shopping! I’m very good at that! n
