We only truly know who we are when we know where we’ve come from.

We keep this in mind in our 20th anniversary year as a charity. By remembering the story and mission of our founders, their dynamism and compassion may stay alive in us.

So, I encourage you to read about our origins in the timeline below. Thank you for your support over the last twenty years, I hope you are inspired to remain a part of our future, too.

We also reflect on this as we launch our Forever Butterflies in memory campaign. As nature’s new life blooms all around us, we encourage you to remember those whose life may be over but who inspire you to this day.

Whoever had a profound influence on you is not truly gone. They live on through you. I hope you will celebrate their life in this way.

At our annual Remembering Days for the children who have passed away, I encourage families in bereavement to remember this, too. Despite all that has been lost, their child’s influence endures in all who knew them.

We remember our founders, the children and others no longer with us because they shaped us, and they inspire us still to be the best version of ourselves.

A NEW FACE IN FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES

“I was at Southampton Hospital when I saw a Julia’s House Team Nurse Role advertised. I had always been interested in Palliative and End of Life Care, so applied. I got the job and haven’t looked back! Over the last several years, I have been privileged to work in various Lead Nurse roles,” says Beth.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH

She continues: “Most recently and during the pandemic, I was one of the Dorset Community Lead Nurses. Overnight, we switched 100 per cent of our care into the community. The support required from our care team during uncertain times and when lives were threatened was unfounded. Teamwork was essential to ensure all of the families continued to receive the best care. From collecting critical medicines for isolating families to providing Zoom play sessions and respite in full Personal Protective clothing. So much changed for the families during the pandemic and we identified a need for new services, so I was asked to develop the Family Support Worker Service.

“This was a huge honour and one which I took on with great enthusiasm and excitement. Working alongside the clinical nursing team enables us to provide a fully holistic approach, which is centred around the child we

Lead Nurse.

are supporting. I became passionate about how clinical care experience could combine and benefit the wider family support we provide, really enhancing the care we give to children and families. I think the perfect example of how these two aspects of our care are brought together are events such as our family garden party and JH Rocks, our hospice-based festival. These events can only work because they involve our entire care team. They are the perfect combination of everything we do and the families love them! The enjoyment of these events, starting the Family Support Worker Service and seeing the potential opportunities to be able to support the whole family, inspired me to change direction with my career. So, when the opportunity came up to apply for the Family Support Services Lead Nurse position in the team, I went for it and got it!

WRAPPING ARMS AROUND THE FAMILY

The Family Support Services Team comprises Family Support Workers, Sibling Workers, Play Workers, Complementary Therapists, an Emotional Health and Wellbeing Practitioner and wider health and wellbeing services such as counselling. It surrounds the whole family, as the impact of caring

24/7 for a seriously ill child affects everyone – one of the families said “it’s like a hug around the whole family”. The team also work closely with the named nurse. Beth explains: “We get feedback from the Julia’s House nurses on a day-today basis about the changing needs of the families they’re supporting, as circumstances can transform overnight. I feel now more than ever, in times of uncertainty, it is imperative to be able to support the families in diverse ways. We have to be responsive and work together to provide the family with what they need in that moment in time.”

The demand for family support services has never been greater: “The families have come straight out of the pandemic and straight into a cost of living crisis. It’s an incredibly difficult time for them,” notes Beth.

SPRING/SUMMER 2023 4
With a nursing career at Julia’s House spanning 15 years, Beth Whitworth, has taken up the reins in a new role as Family Support Services
Esmai-Rose having fun with play worker, Stacey

“Helping them to access financial support right now is vital. We give practical and emotional help too –there’s a lot of apprehension about how they’re going to meet the needs of their seriously ill children, charge vital equipment and feed their family. Staying up to date with local and national offers of support is paramount and being able to pass these onto our families is vital.”

WHEN THE WORST HAPPENS

When the worst happens and a child is at the end of their life, Family Support Services work alongside the nursing team: “Our sibling workers spend time with brothers and sisters, going for walks or being a listening ear. The Complementary Therapists can provide treatments for the child to help them stay comfortable as well as for the wider family to help them through such a difficult time. Play Workers help with play and our Family Support Workers can help with a wide range of support for families, for example, navigating around benefits paperwork, which often suddenly cease when a child dies.

“Losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to a family. Being able to offer all that the Family Support Service can provide from a child’s initial referral throughout their journey is a privilege and is what motivates me.”

FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES

FOREVER REMEMBERED

WITH JULIA’S HOUSE FOREVER BUTTERFLIES

This spring we launch Forever Butterflies, where you can purchase a beautiful blue butterfly to celebrate the life of a friend or loved one. Julia’s House Young Ambassador Diana Lawrence is dedicating her butterfly to her mum, Maria, and her sister Gabrielle, who was cared for by Julia’s House.

“When my baby sister, Gabby, was born she soon started having seizures and that’s when we realised she wasn’t a healthy baby. We discovered she had a rare brain condition which meant one side of her brain was stronger than the other – and this would be shown in her face – she had a little bit of a puffy cheek on one side which was the sweetest. Her condition led to scoliosis of the spine, epilepsy and learning difficulties and she stopped being able to swallow,” shared Diana.

“Gabby didn’t ever let her condition defeat or define her. She was the bubbliest, happiest girl you could meet. She was unable to talk but could communicate in her own way and her laugh would light up the whole room!

“After Gabby died, Julia’s House looked after her during her final

days. The nurses and carers reassured us that we could stay by her side and decorate the room just how she would have wanted. We had some photographs printed and put them up all around the room. We played her favourite songs and projected the night sky above her. It all looked so tranquil and peaceful.

She looked like she was just fast asleep, tucked into bed.

“We couldn’t have wished for a better place to be with Gabby in her final days than Julia’s House –a place where she came and played when she was alive and I guess she was playing there even after she was gone. When I look back I can smile because it was the best way things could have been.

“Some time after Gabby had died, we were invited to a remembering day at the hospice and spent the day talking about Gabby and how bubbly and happy she always was. Gabby wasn’t just missed by us but by all the staff at Julia’s House. We found it really comforting to talk about the memories we had ALL made together.

“Sadly, the night of the remembering day my mum grew her wings and went to be with my little sister. It was a complete shock.

“Even after Gabby and then my

A BUTTERFLY FOR NATASHA

Leading children’s cookery author and Julia’s House patron, Annabel Karmel, is giving her support to Forever Butterflies as she knows only too well the pain of losing a child.

“Julia’s House is a charity close to my heart because of losing my daughter, Natasha. Losing a child is the worst thing that could ever happen to a mother. Natasha was born healthy, but she died aged three months of a viral infection which went to her brain.”

Annabel continues: “It all happenened in a matter of days. I became worried about her and she was admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital because doctors thought there was something wrong with her brain. She ended up in intensive care on a ventilator.

“Eventually we were told there was nothing more they could do, so she was taken off the ventilator. A nurse put Natasha in a pretty little

dress and I held her in my arms. Four and half hours later she died. It was horrendous. You never forget something like that.

“I wanted to make something meaningful of Natasha’s life, so when I wrote my first book, The Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner, it was dedicated to her.

“I was lucky to go on and have three more lovely children, but you still think about the child you lost and how old they would be.

“When I became pregnant again I ended up giving birth to my son Nicholas at home on the staircase, with no medical support for two and half hours. I thought I was going to lose another child. It was traumatic

at the time, but we got through it and Nicholas ended up being the inspiration for my first book, as he was the world’s worst eater.

“Had Natasha not been born none of that would have happened, so something good came out of it. It gave me a career that helps other people and makes a difference to their lives.

“I always think that what you do for others lives on, and what you do for yourself dies with you. And the work we all do with Julia’s House will live on through many generations of families. Forever Butterflies will help that work to continue, and I will be proudly displaying my butterfly in memory of Natasha.”

YOU BRIGHTENED JOSSELIN’S CHRISTMAS

You will remember teenager, Josselin, from our Christmas Appeal. Due to her complex condition she doesn’t smile very often – but her biggest smiles are when her mum, Karen, tells her she is going to the hospice. Being profoundly deaf and registered blind she gets so excited about the bright lights and vibrations of the sensory room!

We are very pleased to tell you that your kindness and support for Josselin’s story raised almost £59,500! A fantastic amount that helped fund hospice sessions, vital respite and home care visits for Josselin’s family and other families like them over the busy festive season.

Not only this – but your Christmas wishes on the returned star decorations shone very brightly with such wonderful messages of support. When we shared these with Mum, Karen, she said: “Oh wow! The messages are amazing. There are lots of lovely people out there.”

Thanks to your support for Julia’s House families, it’s not just Josselin’s family who are smiling and feeling brighter! Thank you.

TEN MINUTES, TEN QUESTIONS

Melissa Farmer

Julia’s House Family Support Worker

WHEN DID YOU JOIN JULIA’S HOUSE?

I joined in February 2005 as a bank community carer in Dorset.

HAS YOUR ROLE CHANGED SINCE THEN?

I have had many different roles but most recently as a Family Support Worker. I support parents where there is specific need: emotional support such as meeting for a cuppa and a chat, helping them to complete essential paperwork, applying for grants as well as organising and hosting events for the families. Also, signposting families to specialist help and information.

HAVE THE NEEDS OF THE FAMILIES CHANGED?

There are a lot more children with really complex needs now, needing more specialised care. This puts additional pressure on exhausted families trying to manage everyday life.

HOW IS THE RISING COST OF LIVING IMPACTING FAMILIES?

Parents are seeing day-to-day costs such as rent, mortgages, heating, clothing and food increase. A lot of the children we care for are on ventilators and other lifesaving equipment, which increases the use of electricity. Parents are worried.

WHAT ARE THE MOST URGENT NEEDS OF THE FAMILIES?

There is often no spare money for the expensive specialist equipment that

IS

WOULDN’T CHANGE MY ROLE FOR ANYTHING.”

children with complex conditions need. We have helped obtain grants for equipment such as a rain and sun canopy for a specialised buggy and a fixed hoist as well as supporting in other ways – driving lessons for parents, memorable family days out, fuel costs and a laptop so a family can manage the mountain of paperwork for their child.

WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY?

I can help a parent complete a complicated application form, research and apply for a grant for equipment, organise an event or meet a parent for coffee and a much needed chat. Every day is different!

WHAT ARE YOUR STAND OUT MOMENTS?

Seeing parents grow in confidence from when they first attend an event,

to seeing them chatting to other new parents, giving advice and support.

WHAT DOES BEING A PART OF THE FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES TEAM MEAN TO YOU?

Having the opportunity to offer that wider support to the whole family is so important to me. I wouldn’t change my role for anything.

HOW DOES THE TEAM SUPPORT EACH OTHER?

We work together so well and encourage each other in our various roles. Just ‘being there’ for one another is paramount, so that we can further support our families.

HOW DO YOU RELAX?

I enjoy crafting and going out for local walks and I also volunteer as a Youth Leader at our local church.

GO WALKIES WITH OUR SWINDOGS!

You may remember our Pride in Bournemouth art trail around a decade ago. It was so much fun and such an amazing way to raise awareness and funds for our care that we’ve decided to do it again – this time with Swindogs!

Artists will soon be tickling our giant Swindogs behind the ears with their paintbrushes and transforming the blank sculptures with their uniquely wild, wonderful and utterly wacky designs. We already have a host of fantastic sponsors on-board. And soon, scores of smaller Swinpups will be wagging their way into classrooms for schoolchildren to decorate too. The Big Dog Art Trail runs from 15 July to 3 September 2023 through some of Swindon’s best-loved and most historic places. The free public art trail will end with a grand farewell event and after that all the Swindogs will be adopted at auction to raise vital funds for Julia’s House. TOGETHER WE CARE

In last autumn’s newsletter, we called on you to help raise awareness and donations for our care for seriously ill children and their families in Wiltshire.

Each and every year, we need to raise around £1.5 million to fund our vital care from Salisbury to Swindon, both at our Devizes hospice and in families’ homes across the county. And we rely almost entirely on the kindness of supporters like you to make that happen.

Just like in Dorset, demand continues to grow for the specialist care our nurses and carers provide. More children are living for longer with increasingly complex care needs. With the pandemic and cost of living crisis, our lifeline of care has become even more essential to local families. So many are struggling with the rising costs of running life-saving equipment for their child and feeling more isolated than ever before.

Despite a challenging year for us all, we’ve raised an incredible £1.2 million during our Together We Care Appeal. You have donated generously, fundraised with flair, shared our care story with passion and volunteered with gusto! We couldn’t be more delighted and we want to say a huge thank you – no matter how small or mega your contribution last year, we couldn’t have done it without you and we’re so grateful you’re part of our supporter family.

14 SPRING/SUMMER 2023
We’ve got a PAW-some year ahead, as we’re poised to host the world’s first balloon dog art trail in Swindon!

YOUR GIVING IS EASING THE COST OF LIVING

Thank you for donating your pre-loved items to Julia’s House shops last year. Funds raised from their sale always help to make a big difference to the families at Julia’s House.

Good quality second hand items have never been of greater importance to others in our local community, who are feeling the financial squeeze of rising energy bills. With the cost of living crisis continuing to play on everyone’s minds, many of us are looking for more affordable ways to shop and

£2.40

the popularity of buying pre-loved items is on the rise.

Let us show you how the price tags of items recently sold in Julia’s House shops could be an affordable alternative to buying brand new.

The pre-loved items we sell provide hours of life-changing care for local families.

Over 1,600 pieces of furniture and 38,671 kitchen accessories were sold last year. This could cover the costs for nine seriously ill children to receive one week of clinical nursing support at the hospice with their family, when they are at the end of their life.

FAMILY NECESSITIES

With 138,853 items of children’s clothes, toys and games sold in 2022, the money raised could fund four fivehour hospice sessions per week for a whole year, where children can have fun and socialise, while their families can spend time with siblings or catch up on sleep.

CLOTHING FOR EVERY OCCASION

The sale of 62,434 women’s tops in 2022 could pay for three years of vital emotional support for 32 families struggling with bereavement.

AN AFFORDABLE HOBBY

A staggering 93,108 books and 39,226 crafts items were sold in 2022, raising funds that could pay for 40 families to receive a monthly three hour community respite session with a nurse and carer, giving exhausted parents a much-needed break from 24/7 care.
