12” x 16 “ oil on stretched canvas May 25, 2021 I painted this on the anniversary of George Floyd’s death as we take 9 minutes and 29 seconds out of our day to remember the seismic effect the brutal death of George Floyd under the knee of a policemen one year before, May 25, 2021 has had on our nation and the world. I was inspired to paint this after that trial because I was so moved by this group of heroes. Not only were there multiple bystanders of different races and ages, a ‘bouquet of humanity’ , but they were all strangers with nothing in common, explained the prosecutor in the trail against the policeman who murdered George Floyd. Say their names: Darnella Frazier, Donald Williams. Genevieve Hansen. Charles McMillan. These and several others shine as true heroes in the tragic story of George Floyd, just regular people who were brought together by fate in that place at that time to witness that moment. Because of the videos a nation began a race reckoning, sparking protests and new legislation to reform police departments all over the nation. A lot has happened in one year and yet there is so much more to be done to become a nation truly bent on creating justice and equality for for all .
