Mother turned 89 on Oct 2, 2020. I painted this for her using her high school black and white photo that hung in our family home all the years I can remember, as a reference. I painted it on her birthday while she watched me paint via video. She’s was in California and I was Puerto Rico. Thanks to my sister Andi who set up the video on her end. We had a nice chat and she gave me the nicest encouraging compliments. I needed to know the color of the dress as I was painting from a black and white photo. She told me a maroon brown color. She told me our dad (her husband Jim) said this was her ‘dressy dress’ . Best birthday memory. It turned out to be the last conversation I had with her before she died in December. I was unable to travel to be with her because of Covid travel restrictions until June 2021.
