The REX Your Remote and External Newsletter February-March 2014

Letter from your Remote and External Officer Hi everyone, Welcome to Study Period 1 at James Cook University! My name is Kate-Lyn Ward and I am your Remote and External Officer for the JCU Student Association. The JCUSA is you independent representative body, governed by a Council of students just like you who are elected at the end of each year by the members of the Association. We are here to ensure that we all have a fair and enjoyable experience throughout our time at JCU. On a national level, the JCUSA has worked with the National Union of Students to secure Youth Allowance scholarships and continue the improvement of student income conditions. However, on a day-to-day basis, we provide a range of free, confidential, and non-judgemental services to students. So if you are ever feeling hassled by academic life, getting assignments in, studying for exams or even making ends meet then we are here to support and guide you when you need it. JCU has a range of policies and procedures that apply to students and these can be quite confusing. If you are ever unsure of what these are or how they apply to you then we can answer any questions that you may have. Our professional Student Support Officers are available to assist you with any academic concerns. They can provide advice and represent or support you in consultations with the university or individual lecturers. They can also assist with applications for deferred exams, special considerations, requests for a review of your assessment and help you to appeal a university decision, if necessary. This assistance is provided to ensure that you can present your case to the university in a fair and clear way to obtain an optimal outcome. They will explain the options available to you and if you so wish help you to pursue appropriate action. The JCUSA doesn’t just provide academic assistance. We also provide a range of other services including welfare support. If you are ever feeling down or have something on your mind and just need to have a chat we are here to support you. If we cannot help you we will make sure that you are put in contact with the right person to help you with your concerns. We also provide assistance with Centrelink payments and can help you to question or appeal any decisions made in relation to these. In addition, we can help you with housing and accommodation information and tax help during tax time (if we have the volunteers). So if you ever have any concerns we encourage you to call our free call number 1800 330 021 and speak to one of our student advocates.

The REX Your Remote and External Newsletter July 2013 So that you may know who I am, I would like to tell you a little about myself. I am an external student living and working on the Atherton Tablelands and am currently doing a Bachelor of Social Work with three subjects per study period. This will be my second year as the R & E Officer and I really enjoy this job. I love meeting all of you that are studying on the remote campuses and it is great when I get the chance to meet those of you who study externally. Last year was the first year that the JCUSA has ever had an R & E Officer, so it is a very new position which I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to develop. Last year I visited the Mackay, Mount Isa and Thursday Island campuses to get a feel for how each operated. Among other things, I have developed this R & E newsletter so that you all know what is going on at the remote campuses and at the Townsville and Cairns campuses. You can also find the REX on the JCUSA website under ‘Services’-‘Remote and External.’ This year I hope to continue working alongside all of you to give R & E students a higher level of representation and a stronger voice on the major campuses. With this aim, I hope to aid students to develop JCUSA Clubs on each of the remote campuses to enable you to run events and foster a strong campus culture. I am also trying to create an R & E committee including students from each of the campuses and a couple of external students that can help me to provide the best representation possible to all R & E students. If you are interested in being a part of either of these opportunities and would like to play a role in representing your fellow students, I would really like to hear from you. If you would like to know more about anything I have discussed here, are interested in lending a hand, have any concerns or would just like to introduce yourself, you are very welcome to send me an email at Katelyn.ward@my.jcu.edu.au or call me on (07) 40 916 690. I hope to have the chance to meet as many of you as possible over the course of this year. Happy studying!!
