NOW YOU GET TO CHOOSE! The 2013 JCU Student Association (JCUSA) Elections have seen the return of student interest in their representative body. This year we have more candidates than we have in over seven years!

The level of interest in this year’s elections is indicative of the post federal election change in government and this is generally when students get active in their representative bodies.

This year sees four tickets registered.

For those who aren’t aware, tickets represent a group of students who have like minded ideals and policies and run together to provide above the line voting options.

This years ticket registrations include; STANDUP!, REPRESENT!, Student United Party (SUP) and Refresh.

In this edition of The Bullsheet, we hope to provide you with an insight into the candidates who are chasing your vote!

Voting will take place on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th October for the JCUSA Student Council elections and for NUS elections will take place on Tuesday 8th, Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th October. Polling booths will be located in front of the Refectory (Market Square) and behind the Library.

Presidential Candidate – Annemarie Theuma Over the past years, I have seen JCU grow bigger in scope and prospects, with personal belief that the JCU Student Association has been an integral player in this evolution. This year I was elected as Vice-President, during which I endeavored to represent Students both in matters of the Student Association, to the University at large. I was an integral player of the set up and launching of the 'Green Switch' Initiative, which saw a great number of events promoting Sustainability on Campus, including frequent Clothes 'n Stuff Swaps, the weekly Student Kitchen, the plastic campaign, and working with Clubs and Societies to create awareness. Next year, as part of the Refresh Team, I hope to play a larger role in the Student Association, enabling me to represent and work with all students at JCU. My focus would be to continue the growth of a campus culture, as well as to promote and establish sustainable practices on campus to achieve increased environmental awareness. I will represent all students in matters of salience to them; I will attempt to address situations that impact students, regardless of where their home campus is located. If elected as President, I will aim to establish closer ties between the JCU Campuses and be a voice to all students from all walks of life.

If elected, I will continue to organize and run Sustainable initiatives on campus, working towards creating a better campus life for all students. It would be an amazing achievement to have the 'Green Switch' Initiative running for a second year.

Additionally, I will endeavor to run an audit of Student Association Services, in particular the food outlets. I am aware that a number of students do not think that this service is at its best, and would do my best to create a positive change in the refectory.

Campus life is an integral part of being a student, and it is important that students from all backgrounds are catered for and included in all JCUSA activities.

In the past, student councilors have been directed to work on projects individually, however this may not have produced the best outcomes. If elected, I will direct council to create campaigns and projects collectively, which will run on both Cairns and Townsville Campuses, as well as the remote and external campuses. We will seek to further work with the Singapore and Brisbane Campuses to create JCU-wide initiatives. The Campaigns will be Environmental, Welfare and Diversity orientated, vouching for students needs and ensuring that they are being met by the University Management.

I have held a position within the JCUSA council for three years, and believe that I have the necessary skills to lead the council in a strategic and positive manner. All in all, I will strive to create positive change for students, and work for the betterment of academic and social aspects of life during our time at JCU.

Presidential Candidate – Benjamin Gertz Hello, my name is Benjamin Gertz. I am a 3rd year Business (Economics) Student and I am your REPRESENT! candidate for the position of President in the upcoming Student Association elections. You might be asking, why should I be your next president?

Well, for many good reasons. Over my past three years as a student at JCU, I have been involved in student politics, overseen the creation of many clubs and societies, and have had previous experience as the Equity and Diversity Officer on the Student Association council, and as an NUS delegate and NUS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Officer where I was able to engage with students and university departments all over the country.

While my previous experience will no doubt serve me well if elected, I also understand that my experience alone will not make me and the REPRESENT! team any better. It is our also vision that will make your student representation better!

I am running because, over the past 3 years, we have seen control of our student association favour one campus over the over.

REPRESENT! believes our current system of representation needs to be reformed in order to provide adequate representation for both campuses, and REPRESENT! will be looking at ways to make student representation better, as well as fair and equitable.

I am running because I believe our the services provided on our campuses can be better! I believe that our services such as the Uni Club are under utilised, and with the university providing more competition against Student Association run food and beverage services, now has never been a better time to show students what our services are made of, and I will continue to ensure that our services still remain the better choice for food on campus for our students. I also believe our campuses need to be more vibrant, and REPRESENT! hope to establish more events and activities on campus and make JCU not just a place of study for our students, but a vibrant community which can be enjoyed in our time away from study.

I want university to be more flexible, and would like to see our students access cheaper textbooks, more online lectures, and a universal lunch hour for both students and staff to enjoy. However, these are issues where our continued affiliation with the National Union of Students comes in handy, and we will fight to continue our relationship with NUS. I am running because I believe our campus can be more sustainable, I will work with the university to install more recycling bins on both Townsville and Cairns campuses, and work with organisations such as TropEco and external transport providers to promote sustainable transport as an alternative solution to our parking woes.

These are the issues that I and your REPRESENT! candidates are passionate about, but we'd also like to hear from you, and hear how you would make the university better!

Presidential Candidate – Connor Davey I, Connor Davey, am a student at the James Cook University Cairns Campus. I am a first year law student with the hope of being elected as the JCU Students Association (JCUSA) President. I promise that if I am elected I will uphold the values of James Cook University, the constitution of the JCUSA and conduct myself in the best interests of the students of the University along with James Cook University. It will be a priority to promote the Students Association to all students, not only students from Cairns but from Townsville, Brisbane and Singapore. Increasing membership is important as this will give students the opportunity to voice issues they might have and a chance to become proactive in how the Student Association operates.

As a member of the Students United Party (SUP) along with Kenneth Damaschke and Oliviero Bolli we have combined to promote the welfare of the students as a key issue. It is a promise, not only from me but by SUP that we will make things happen to benefit all students if I am elected as President of the Students Association. I promise to: ?

Provide students with a voice. Regardless of their location (campus), faculty, age or background.

Seek clarification on how much of a say the students of JCU have on how the Students Amenities Fees are spent. Also ask for a specific breakdown on where the money is distributed to.

To establish a genuine JCU social club for students. This will originate in Cairns and off the success off the Cairns Social Club, will expand to Townsville and then the idea will take hold in Brisbane.

To keep students informed of all issues that concern them.

Break the divides between each faculty between students and unify the student body.

Be approachable to all students that wish to talk about issues they feel are important concerning James Cook University.

Create a forum where students can discuss publicly, with each other not just members of the JCUSA, issues they feel are important concerning the University.

To promote meetings with the heads of each student society from each faculty to promote a united approach to promoting the welfare of all students.

To take all concerns that students raise seriously and to address them quickly and efficiently.

To respect all cultures, opinions, traditions and ideas that students bring to James Cook University.

It is with these ambitions that if elected as president I will increase membership of the JCUSA, unify the student body and create a strong sense of alliance in making a difference for the benefit of the students of James Cook University. This will not only benefit the students but maintain the sense of belief that students have in James Cook University in providing a strong education and future for all.

Presidential Candidate – Fraser Carrier - Hubbard ‘The James Cook University Student Association is an organisation directed by elected students which aims to provide high quality representation, support services and relevant nonacademic activities to all of its members.' This mission embodies the whole concept of the STANDUP! party and what we are all about, the students. We want to put the capital letter in H-igh quality representation and allow the voices of every JCU student, whether they are on campus or external, international or local. Our aim is to standup for everyone's opinions and values because we are all unique and valued members of the JCU community.

In 2009 the STANDUP! party was formed with the idea and plan to change the JCU experience for every student by completely altering the social dynamics of JCU life. By no means was this an easy task with the association suffering serious financial problems after the abolition of compulsory membership in 2006. However with new policies and initiatives successive STANDUP! Councils were able to return revenue and bring the association to the state in which you see it today. Nevertheless there are always areas for improvement and 2014 will be like any other, big changes and expansions will enhance the learning experience further.

Being a student, just like anyone else I see first-hand areas in need of development and hear concerns from other students wanting to see improvements. This is my main reason for running for the presidential position in 2014, I want these concerns to be heard and actually acted upon.

The allocation of the Student Servicer Amenities Fee (SSAF) is something that should be chosen with the input of the whole student community and must represent the majority of students. I promise as your president to: ?

Breathe life into the facilities and updating them to fit the needs of today's students – Over $150, 000 will be dedicated into the facility upgrades on both Cairns and Townsville campuses.

Empower the students - by being your voice and holding meetings and forums to get the best outcome to benefit the student body. (This will involve actually getting out and around campus and see first-hand the areas needing improvement.)

Continue the work on the policies conducted by this

year's council, in particular the environmental policy – JCU prides its self on the research and its connection to the tropics, so implementing relevant policies to protect it and ensure it's there for decades is essential.

These three policies form only the beginning, STANDUP! will be launching more policies in coming days on its Facebook page. These promises are not only going to be followed through by myself but by my whole party. Each member will be focused on particular aspects of university life so that nothing will be neglected. Together with the backing of you (the student body) JCU can continue to grow in a direction that aids the student population. STANDUP! will fight for you because it's your life, your campus, your voice.

VICE PRESIDENT CANDIDATES: Vice President Candidate – Shelley Smith My name is Shelley Smith and I will be running for Vice President on the Refresh team. As part of the Student Council for 2013, first as Equity & Diversity Officer, and then as Cairns Campus Officer, I have made many positive changes on campus, and have an extensive and internal knowledge of how the Student Association is run and how it operates.

Over the course of the past year I have been a part of the most visible and exciting campaigns and events on both Cairns and Townsville Campuses, including the complete running and organization of Rainbow Day, The Clothes Swap, Student Kitchen and the Green Switch Campaign.

As Cairns Campus Officer I have seen the campus culture grow bigger and more inclusive over the past years, and I plan to be part of bigger and better changes over 2014 on both Cairns and Townsville campuses. If elected as Vice President I plan to establish closer links between Campuses and aim to hold campaigns and events on both campuses, focused toward Sustainablity. I will strive for a more sustainable Student Association, positive change and representation for all students.

Vice President Candidate – Nathan Toll Hello, my name is Nathan Toll, and I am a 3rd year Law student and I am running as your candidate for the position of Vice-President as part of the REPRESENT! team. I am running for the position because as a Law student, I continually struggle with the extra costs and pressures associated with study, and I understand that students are losing flexibility with work commitments, often to the detriment of study, and I want to ensure that the student experience at JCU is better and more flexible for all students.

If elected, I wish to work with our affiliated and non-affiliated clubs and societies, as well as relevant university departments to ensure our student's voices are heard. I will advocate for access to cheaper text books, more course flexibility with online lectures, and a universal lunch hour that all students can enjoy. I will work with other office bearers to ensure that our campuses are more sustainable, ensure that our campus is more vibrant, and ensuring our services are better for all JCU students. TOWNSVILLE CAMPUS OFFICER CANDIDATES: Townsville Campus Officer Candidate – Nicholas Barber Hello, my name is Nicholas Barber, and I am a 2nd year Bachelor of Information Technology student and I am running as your candidate for the position of Townsville Campus Officer as part of the REPRESENT! team. I am running for the position because I as a student who resides oncampus, I regularly use the facilities available on campus, and I know that the services and student support on our campus can be better, and I hope to be the person who makes it better for you.

If elected, I wish to work with our affiliated and non-affiliated clubs and societies, as well as relevant university departments to ensure our student's voices are heard. I also believe that our facilities such as the refectory and the uni club can be better utilised, and that is why I will be fighting to ensure more regular events at the uni club, and making sure not only our students are supported, but association staff as well. I will also be fighting to make our campus more vibrant by advocating for more on campus events, and giving students more activities. A vote for me, is a vote for Better representation.

Vote 1, REPRESENT! Townsville Campus Officer Candidate –Joshua SmithMonaghan I believe Townsville needs a dedicated and driven Campus Officer, one who can engage with both the faculty staff and students. One who cares about the welfare of the Townsville JCUSA and JCU. If elected to the Townsville Campus Officer position, I will continue the policy of greater organisation and cooperation that I tried to foster in the short time I spent as the Equity and Diversity Officer. Over the last six months I have helped the previous Townsville Campus Officer in some parts of the role, and this has given me some excellent insight into what the position requires and what is needed of a Campus Officer. Organising more social events that happen within O Week and other times throughout the year is a priority for my work plan.

Getting greater involvement and a larger percentage of student association members during O Week events will enable the greater cooperation and organisation within the student body and across the campus.

I hope to be elected as the JCU Student Association (JCUSA) Townsville campus officer. I am a member of a group of Townsville students who feel that our view is too often considered last. We believe that as the customers of the university we deserve a strong voice. This mission has led us to establish an important strategic alliance “The Students United Party (SUP)”. SUP consists of three members from cairns and three members from Townsville. Sup will support and listen to students. We will ensure students know exactly how their SSAF and SA+ fees are being spent. We will lobby for automatic FREE membership of the Student Association and give people more incentives to upgrade. We are proud JCU students who have a vision for our campuses. CAIRNS CAMPUS OFFICER CANDIDATES: Cairns Campus Officer Candidate – Alana Valero The JCU Student Council has played an important role in expanding JCU's scope and involvement with the local community as well as at a global scale. As Cairns campus officer, I will represent Cairns students both to the university at large and to the cairns community. I will make it my task to collect, engage with and discover the issues which are important to Cairns students. I believe that by doing this, student collaboration will increase, both within cairns and across all JCU campuses. By having an increased sense of place and community within the university, I hope to continue the growth of campus culture. My focus will also be on increasing sustainable practices on campus and working with clubs and societies to increase student participation and environmental awareness.

Ultimately, my main aim as Cairns campus officer will be to integrate the social and academic aspects of student welfare and lifestyle by empowering students and facilitating positive change.

Cairns Campus Officer Candidate – Simon Winston Marshall As one of the majority of students, I am a Mature Aged Student who attended High School in the Mareeba area. Upon commencing my studies at James Cook University, I noticed that the unity between students across all faculties was lacking. I feel this unity can be grown from its current state with the assistance of the Student Association, Clubs & Societies and Students who are Mentors in the Mentor Program on campus.

By representing students on the Cairns Campus, I aim to foster student unity in all faculties and work closely with Clubs & Societies to achieve meaningful and lasting outcomes that will benefit all students on campus, external students and members of public who attend the campus. With my prior knowledge of interactions as a Mentor with students/staff and as a Casual JCU Staff member, I also aim to promote all student run events and be a voice for all students, advocating on their behalf to the council and the University.

At James Cook University I value fairness, equity, democratic processes in all areas concerning a student's academic road trip.

Cairns Campus Officer Candidate – Olivireo Bolli As many others on the Cairns campus, I am a school leaver who attended High School here in the Cairns area. Upon joining JCU, I noticed that a certain unity between the students of different faculties was missing. I believe that this unity cannot happen without the intervention of an entity like a student association. In observing the current approach to student unity and appropriate representation, I have noticed a considerable lack of effort.

I aim to bring the students together and represent them in any changes they wish to see in our campus. My objective is to transform the refectory/boathouse area into a forum where students can gather on organised dates to suggest any action they wish the Student Association to take. In our University, we value fairness, equality and last but not least a democratic process – in any area concerning a student's academic journey. In the campaign with fellow students Connor Davey (running for President) and Kenneth Damaschke (running for Vice President) I wish to bring a voice to the people of James Cook University, amplify their needs and help them achieve what they wish for when studying at JCU.

EQUITY & DIVERSITY OFFICER CANDIDATES: Equity & Diversity Officer Candidate – Jo-ann Raleigh I Jo-Ann Raleigh would like to be able to support and assist the Student Council in setting a standard of equity and diversity having friends from all walks of life who have shared their struggles and stories giving myself a better understanding of the daily pressures of being accepted. Friendships however formed I respect regardless of background or persuasion, having many acquaintances from all over the world, eg: homestay international students , I've learnt from their cultures and perspectives on life moving me to ensure I am more able to actively support them in a positive way. This passion is extremely important to me in also being able to share their stories with others especially my children and mindsets of others. Being a sole parent and also an active community member with volunteer work on and off campus I believe my role in this position would enhance the options and support to any student who experiences discrimination or is misunderstood and requires in some part an advocate to speak for them.

Equity & Diversity Officer Candidate – Jade Gould Hello, my name is Jade Gould, I am a 2nd year Bachelor of Science student and I am running as your candidate for the position of Equity and Diversity Officer as part of the REPRESENT! team. I am running for the position because I am passionate about seeing our students who are from diverse and multicultural backgrounds succeeding in all aspects of university life. I am currently active in many clubs and societies on campus and I helped establish and currently serve as the Vice-President of the Indigenous Student Association.

If elected, I wish to work with our affiliated and non-affiliated clubs and societies, as well as relevant university departments to ensure our student's voices are heard. I also believe that our campus can be more sustainable, as well as vibrant. I will push for more recycling bins on both Townsville and Cairns campuses, as well as work with organisations like Sunbus to improve public transport, and work with clubs and societies to establish more events on campus aimed at promoting multiculturalism and diversity, as well as provide students with more activities on campus. Equity & Diversity Officer Candidate – Phillip Deguara My name is Phillip Deguara and I believe I will make an excellent Equity and Diversity Officer 2014. Using tertiary training experience from completing a traineeship, an apprenticeship and having years of experience in many roles in the workforce I am passionate about helping students realise their potential at JCU. As an apprentice I participated in the 2008/09 Australian Apprenticeships Roundtable and the Australian Youth Forum. These programs highlighted youth issues such as engagement and retention in learning and provided a great platform for understanding common problems faced by youth in tertiary education as well as the more unique challenges and promoting change.

As Equity and Diversity Officer my goal is to maintain a high level of service to James Cook University students. As a second year Psychology student my studies and experience has given an understanding of student issues such as social and economic immobility and their effects on self-elimination from education.

My aim is to promote a healthy and interactive student lifestyle which enhances the resilience and determination required to engage and complete university education. I will continually seek to improve my current skills and provide and exceptional standard.

Equity & Diversity Officer Candidate – Jade Luchsinger My name is Jade Luchsinger. I am a first year law student at James Cook University Townsville and am excited about the opportunity to be elected as the JCU Student Association Townsville Equity and Diversity Official. I am a Canadian citizen, and have completed an Environment Science Degree at home and hope to be an asset to this position through my knowledge and diverse background. I have similar values to those of the Student Union Party (SUP) in Cairns and intend to promote much of what they are advocating. I also will include some aspects I believe are important and will aid James Cook University and the students. As an elected official I Intend to ? ? ? ?

International Student’s Officer Candidate – Mohammad Ilias Inam I want to compete for the international student officer position at 44th Student Association Council election due to the following motivation: 1. International student have different racial aspect respect to Australia. Due to that reason, it too challenging for them to adopt new culture during their first stage in Australia. On the other hand, they are also coming from diverse country. I would be happy to help them to embrace new culture and will try to adjust them into the main stream. I also want to explore their culture into the Australian culture, which will help to enrich Australian culture.

2. Since International student are coming from different University or College from different country. I want to explore James Cook University among their previous education institute with the help of international student. It will be helpful to upsurge James Cook University as worldwide acknowledgment.

International Student’s Officer Candidate – Elvira Mostyn My name is Elvira Mostyn, and I am asking for your vote to be re-elected as JCU International Student Rep. Born in Russia, relocating to Canada, and now studying in Australia, I understand the challenges of studying in a new country.

International students should be treated equally and fairly at JCU, and I have not stopped fighting for you since my election last year.

Continuing to be accessible and accountable to you, I will continue to embrace your ideas and concerns.

I am proud of our achievements since last year, but there is so much more to do.

I will fight for you, the international student, including: 1. Fighting for On-Campus Student Accommodation; 2. Fighting for Gender Equality on campus; 3. Equality for Int'l Medical and Dental students, who continue to pay international fees even after changing their Australian residency status; 4. Continued support and reasonable accommodation for international students on campus Thank you for your support, and together we can fight for the rights of international students on campus.

On October 8 & 9 2013, Vote ELVIRA MOSTYN for International Student Rep! International Student’s Officer Candidate – Thomas Reid Fraser I, Reid Fraser, am a first year student in the Bachelor of Laws graduate entry program at James Cook University Townsville. I am hoping to be elected as the JCU International Student Officer. I am a Canadian student who has completed a degree at the University of British Columbia and moved to Australia to complete my threeyear law degree. I bring with me university experiences that have given me values similar to those of the Students United Party (SUP) at the Cairns Campus.

As a member of the SUP I will promote the welfare of the student body and act in a way that best represents their interests. If elected as International Student Officer I will: ? Seek to hear the voices of international students at JCU and bring all matters of issue to the forefront, helping them become involved both on campus and in the community. ? Organize international student activities on and off campus. (perhaps they can vote for their favorite) ? Promote the reopening of the University Club on Thursday nights, while enforcing the 'one friend rule'. (safe enjoyable culture) ? Food deals at the refectory, such as pop half price with a sandwich or wrap.

Hello, my name is Benjamin Gertz, and I am a 3rd year Business (Economics) student and I am running as part of the REPRESENT! team as one of your candidates for the position of National Union of Students delegate. The National Union of Students is the peak tertiary student body in Australia, and has a strong history supporting university students from all walks of life, and has achieved major successes for students over its lifetime. As a former JCU delegate and former NUS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander officer, I have proven experience advocating for JCU at a national level, and will use my understanding and previous experience at NUS to continue fighting for JCU Students.

I, Thomas Reid Fraser, have been nominated for the position of International Student Officer at James Cook University Student Association. If I am elected I will promote the voices of international students at both the Townsville and Cairns campuses at this event.

As a law student, I am concerned about the increasing costs of material such as text books and university access as well as study loads and believe that the student experience needs to be better.

As an Indigenous student, I am passionate about ensuring Indigenous students continue to have the opportunity to study at a university like JCU, and it is only through a national body like the NUS where Indigenous students can continue to have their voices heard.

NUS Delegate Nominee – Jade Gould Hello, my name is Jade Gould, I am a 2nd year Bachelor of Science student and I am running as part of the REPRESENT! team as one of your candidates for the position of National Union of Students delegate. The National Union of Students is the peak tertiary student body in Australia, and has a strong history representing the interests of students from diverse and multicultural backgrounds, as well as fighting for the interests of regional universities.

If elected as one of your NUS delegates, I will take the views and opinions of fellow JCU students, especially those from multicultural and diverse backgrounds, down to the National Union of Student's conferences and fight for the issues which affect James Cook University students and work with students from other universities facing similar issues. NUS Delegate Nominee –Jessica Simpson As NUS Delegate I hope to prevent and restore cuts to the university funding made by the current and former government. This will also increase funding per student and fight to avoid the start up scholarship becoming a loan for students to pay off.

I would also hope to gain more funding for the university to finance a wider variety of courses for students at Jcu. Though we have a wide range of courses available, more majors, minors, electives and degrees can be offered to make jcu on par with other great unis in Australia.

I also hope to provide advocacy and a voice for students not only on a campus forum but on a national level.

By giving the more regional voice in the NUS, it can be hoped that it will mean better services available to students.

NUS Delegate Nominee –Jesse Cook The National Union of Students is the peak representative body for students in Australia. This year saw the union play an important role in activating students in the electoral process through stimulating discussion within students and debate between party leaders. It is NUS that ensures education funding and student support remains a topical issue in parliament, continuing the fight for more investment into universities and greater support for students from low socio-economic backgrounds. I have a great passion for representing students on these issues and hope to continue to do so again if elected one of JCU's delegates the to the National union of Students.

NUS Delegate Nominee –Fraser CarrierHubbard Throughout this year I have been witness to many of the National Unions Campaigns being run by the Association. I have a keen interest in student welfare and I believe being elected as and NUS delegate will go hand in hand with my candidacy for President of the James Cook University Student Association. I firmly believe that a strong voice on the national platform is what JCU needs and I promise to be that voice. Too often regional voices have been forgotten on the national agenda due to universities being focused in and around cities and I pledge to make a difference.

NUS Delegate Nominee –Annemarie Theuma Being part of the Student Association, I also understand the importance of looking at the broader picture as part of the Australian Tertiary Education System. The National Union of Students provides a platform for all students throughout the country to unite on issues affecting students across states. It focuses on giving each and every student a voice, regardless of their gender, sexuality, ethnicity and social economic status. Being an NUS delegate would enable me to be informed about the broader issues, as well as have knowledge about the policies and campaigns the national union is pushing. Being part of this, I will be able to encourage students at James Cook University to be active on campus on issues they relate to. We will be able to work towards changing the system and lobby for positive change from the main bodies that govern the concerns of dispute. The NUS also enables students from different universities to meet to discuss issues and exchange ideas on how we could tackle them to create change within our respective universities as well as within the community at large.

NUS Delegate Nominee –Nicholas Barber Hello, my name is Nicholas Barber, and I am a 2nd year Bachelor of IT student and I am running as part of the REPRESENT! team as one of your candidates for the position of National Union of Students delegate. The National Union of Students is the peak tertiary student body in Australia, and has a strong history supporting students from all universities, and has achieved major successes for students over its lifetime, especially in regards to student housing. As a student from Central Queensland, I currently reside on campus, and I understand the pressures that affect on-campus students, and those seeking accommodation during their study.

If elected as one of your NUS delegates, I will take the views and opinions of fellow JCU students, especially those who reside on-campus in student housing, down to the National Union of Student's conferences and fight for the issues which affect James Cook University students and work with students from other universities facing similar issues, especially in relation to student housing, to achieve better outcomes. What is NUS? The National Union of Students (NUS) is the peak representative body for undergraduate students in Australia.

NUS works to protect the rights of students across Australia, organises national campaigns on issues affecting students in a range of different areas, and makes sure that the student voice is heard by government, the media, and the public.

Who Runs NUS? NUS is owned and run by students, and its activities and direction are determined by students through annual campus elections. Any student at an affiliate campus may run in these elections to be a delegate to the NUS National Conference, held every December, and all students are welcome to participate in the decision making of NUS. The National Conference sets the policy for NUS, determines its structure, and elects the National Office-Bearers and the National Executive.

The management of NUS is conducted through the National Executive, which is comprised of 12 students as well of all of the State Branch Presidents. The National President chairs the National Executive.
