A Message From

Superintendent

mdrahos@m-ecs.org

On Tuesday, December 10, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Edward R. Andrews Elementary gymnasium the voters of the Morrisville-Eaton Central School District will have an opportunity to vote on the following advisory (straw) vote regarding a potential merger with the Hamilton Central School District:

Should the Hamilton Central School District and the Morrisville-Eaton Central School District be joined together as a single district by centralization? This community vote follows a two-year process, whereby the district examined options to respond to the cuts in state aid and subsequent cuts in educational staff and programs. Over the past four years our total staff has been reduced by 20% and extra-curricular opportunities have been reduced by 50%. Community advisory committees from both districts met for over a year with consultants culminating in a Reorganization Feasibility Study, which can be found on the district website at w w w. m - e c s . o r g y or s i . The Board of v d Education and I are committed to traw meeting with any ote interested community groups to discuss the study findings and the tough decisions that our district will face in order to meet our mission.

A “S V

In addition to offering to meet with these groups, the district is inviting all interested people to attend our community informational sessions. The first community forum was held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday night, October 21st. I began with an overview of the rationale for the study, an overview of the findings, and an outline of the alternatives to a merger with Hamilton. A copy of this presentation can be found on the district website and is titled: “Is a merger in our districts best interest?” After the presentation, I and members of the Board of Education responded to questions, and listened to concerns from those who were present. The next public forum will be held on Saturday, November 9th. There will be a student-sponsored pancake breakfast (donations going to a literacy initiative for pre-school students in our district) from 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Tours of the middle high school will be available to anyone interested from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. A second community forum, following the same format as the previous one, will then be held at 11:00 a.m. The Hamilton Central School District will also provide a building tour at 5:30 p.m. on November 14th for anyone interested. We strongly encourage everyone to examine the study. A brief overview of the study recommendations can be found inside this issue of the Glances. If you do not have access to the internet, the district office can provide you with a copy of the full study. This is truly a generational decision and one that we believe rests in the hands of the community, not a five member Board of Education. We will do our best to answer the questions that can be answered, and to listen carefully to the hopes and concerns of everyone as we move forward to the December 10th advisory vote. Sincerely,

Michael R. Drahos, Superintendent

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS Dear Families and Students:

News From Mrs. Lake

Help with the Common Core In November, we will begin hosting parent nights with information and activities to help you help your child(ren) with the Common Core English Language Arts and Mathematics. Below are other resources that you can access. The informational sites are taken from EngageNY, which is the site for all things related to the Common Core in New York State. The site also has many other resources for parents and families.

These are the first three children in my class that have read 25 books in our 100 book club. Students are to read at least 100 books before June and these students have read 25 or more so far and it is only October!

Council of Great City Schools Parent Roadmap http://www.cgcs.org/Domain/36 The site provides individual road maps in English and Spanish for ELA and mathematics for each of grades K-8. These maps help guide parents through what their children will be learning and how they can support that learning. They also provide timelines showing how selected standards change from year to year so that students will be college- and career-ready upon their graduation from high school. The Council of Great City Schools has also produced a parent-friendly three minute video explaining the Common Core, available at: http://www.commoncoreworks.org Stand for Children Web site http://stand.org/national/blog/2012/09/10/common-core-standards-building-strongfoundation-our-childrens-success The Stand for Children web site includes a brief and parent-friendly description about why states have adopted CCSS, what the shifts are and what will change for students. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS MECS PTO NEWS MECS PTO is off and running in the new school year. We meet the first Wednesday of each month in the elementary school library (enter through the library door on the side of the building near the playground). We look forward to new members joining us anytime and we are always looking for volunteers to assist us with the many events we hold throughout the year. We are preparing for a busy holiday season by sponsoring the following activities at the elementary school: • Elf’s Closet – Our annual Elf’s Closet will be open December 2nd – 6th during the school day to provide an opportunity for students to purchase gifts for family members. Volunteers are available to help students select from a large variety of items ranging in price from under $1 up to $10 each. Students are so proud that they can purchase their own gifts for family members. Please let me know if you would be interested in volunteering to assist us with this event. • Holiday Make & Take Card Class – We will again be hosting our very popular Family Make and Take Card Night on December 5th from 6 - 8 PM in the elementary cafeteria. Students will have the opportunity to make three different customized cards with multiple layers and embellishments. Please join us and show your creativity. This is a family activity so students must be accompanied by an adult to assist with the cards. Also, coming up are the first elementary and middle/ high school honor roll receptions. PTO provides a free treat from the cafeteria for all students who make the honor or high honor roll. Elementary student parents are specially invited to an ice cream reception with their children. Middle and high school students have the opportunity to win a yearbook or a $10 gift certificate for food from a Morrisville eatery. PTO donates one yearbook and one gift certificate per grade. Each student on honor or high honor has his/ her name placed into a drawing and two winners are selected from each grade - one for the yearbook and one for the food gift certificate. Reminder: If your child missed picture day or you weren’t happy with the pictures, retakes with Lifetouch are November 4th at the M/HS and November 13th at the elementary school. Feel free to contact me at 684-3796 if you have any questions or are available to volunteer at any of our events. Sincerely,

New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Sex Offender Registry There are 4 ways to obtain information about sex offenders in New York State: 1) You can call 1-800-262-3257 to determine if someone is on the Sex Offender Registry. You will need the name of the person about whom you are inquiring and one of the following: an exact address, a complete date of birth, a driver’s license number or a social security number. 2) You can access the Subdirectory on the Division of Criminal Justice Services web site at www.criminaljustice.state.ny.us by clicking on the “Search Subdirectory” button. 3) The local law enforcement agency where the offender currently resides, can, if it chooses, release community notification information on sex offenders residing in the community to “entities with vulnerable populations related to the nature of the offense”. The law enforcement agency can release information on level 1, level 2 and level 3 offenders through this method. 4)

Your local law enforcement agency has the subdirectory available for the public to view upon request. The laws regarding the Sex Offender Registry are frequently updated. Therefore, we encourage you to refer to the DCJS website listed below for the most up-to-date information.

Please Note: As a result of the ongoing federal litigation in Doe v. Pataki, certain sex offenders cannot be included in the Subdirectory. Additionally, as a result of this continuing litigation, additional information regarding certain level 1 sex offenders will not be available via the DCJS 800# and law enforcement cannot perform community notification on them.

DISTRICT NEWS

Christmas 2013

It’s hard to believe that we are beginning our 28 year of the Morrisville Community Christmas project. As you know, the families that we reach out to are in need of a little support during the holidays. With the economy remaining very slow to recover it is only with your help we can offer these families the opportunity to give their children a little joy and magic that the season promises to all of us. Last year we served 90 families and over 200 children. The generosity in our community and beyond made possible the most amazing experience for not only the parents, but the volunteers who work throughout the year to insure that the children of the Morrisville-Eaton School District have warm clothing, hats, mittens and of course a few toys and books. th

I’m sure that no one needs to be reminded of the slow job growth in our area in the past year. The 2013 Christmas project is expected to host a similar number of families as last year. I would ask that you consider once again giving generously so that we can meet the many requests for assistance that the elementary school receives. Judy Parker, Coordinator, and the over 50 caring volunteers in the community are excited to officially kick off the 28th Annual Christmas Program and with your support it will be another meaningful Christmas this year. The program will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013. Please take this opportunity to send a monetary contribution to Judy Parker, PO Box 266, Morrisville, NY 13408. For tax exempt donations please make checks payable to, St. Joan of Arc Church, PO Box 1087, Morrisville, NY 13408. Donations of new clothing, toys, sleds, mittens, hats, children’s books, crayons, markers, jewelry and stocking stuffers would also be appreciated. Thank you for sharing in the true meaning of Christmas. Your generosity will make a brighter holiday for the children of our area. Warmest regards,

Judy Parker

Board of Trustees for the Morrisville Public Library The Morrisville Public Library Board of Trustees is looking for interested candidates to be on a waiting list should an opening become available on the board. Interested people must be at least 18 years of age and qualified to vote in the M-ECS District. He/she must be literate, a citizen of the United States and not be a convicted felon or have been adjudged incompetent. A trustee’s job is very simple. Attend our meetings in January, March, May, July, September and November on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30pm. Vote on new policies, the annual budget and various issues that come to light. We hold the annual book sale, the open house in December and a few fundraisers each year. We also do projects ourselves as a group to save money for the library-assist the gardener, fix odds-n-ends things, etc. Being a trustee is as much time as you can provide and everyone is not expected to do everything. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact the Library Manager.

Peterboro Joins Bell Ringing Commemoration of March on Washington Bells in Peterboro rang at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28 in unison with the nation’s recognition of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s March on Washington and his I Have A Dream speech. The Smithfield Community Association began the program at the Smithfield Community Center at 5255 Pleasant Valley Road in Peterboro with the ringing of the bells in the tower of the Center by Steve Joeckel, former President of the Smithfield Community Association. The bells across the street at the Peterboro United Methodist Church rang at the same time. Following the solemn bell ringing, the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited. The Flag was accompanied by six 35 star flags presented at the Annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend and Emancipation Day - in recognition of six African-Americans from Peterboro who served in the Civil War fighting for freedom from slavery. Rev. James Fletcher, pastor of the Perryville and Peterboro United Methodist Churches, opened the program with words of reconciliation and prayers for freedom from racism and discrimination. Norman K. Dann PhD., Member of the Cabinet of Freedom for the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, and Nell Ziegler, President of the Smithfield Community Association, lead the reading of excerpts from King’s I Have a Dream speech. A facsimile of the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation that toured eight cities in New York State in 2012 with King’s I Have a Dream speech was on exhibit with accompanying pamphlets for attendees.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR ATHLETIC COORDINATOR, CHRISTOPHER DOROSHENKO I would like to thank all the athletes that played either a Junior Varsity, Modified, or Varsity team this fall. It has been a very successful season and a pleasure to watch you all on the athletic field. Also, I would like to thank the Morrisville State College and the Athletic Director, Greg Carroll, for the continued working relationship that we have. This fall we started a new combination with Hamilton to allow athletes from both schools to compete in the sports that they love to play. As before the Hamilton athletes traveled to play football here at Morrisville-Eaton as MEH Football. Along with football this year, we joined together for field hockey at Morrisville-Eaton. The girls are going into sectionals as the #1 overall seed for Class D. Our boys soccer traveled over to Hamilton to join the Hamilton team and going into Sectionals as the #2 seed in Class C. Girls soccer did not combine with Hamilton and are going into Sectionals as the #3 seed for Class C. I would like to extend a big thank you to all the coaches. They have been great working out these opportunities for our athletes along with the athletes from Hamilton.

Whether we want to admit it or not, the holiday season is fast approaching. It’s time once again for the GAA to start planning for the Christmas Charity Program. This program has been offered by the GAA for well over 50 years. We traditionally select ten to fifteen underprivileged families from our school district and purchase Christmas presents for those families. The club solicits donations from the community, individuals, and groups within the school. The GAA also sells concessions at boys’ basketball games to contribute to the program. We are proud to serve the community and are striving to keep this wonderful program alive. We would like you to become a part of our program by making a donation to the GAA. Checks should be made out to, “MECS GAA”, sent to Erin Tucker at the Morrisville-Eaton Elementary School, 55 Eaton Street, P.O. Box 990, Morrisville, NY 13408.
