DISTRICT NEWS A Message From

the

Superintendent

On behalf of the Morrisville-Eaton Board of Education, I want to thank our district residents for their overwhelming support of the 2013-2014 budget. The 207-71 vote reflects a 74% approval of our efforts to meet our educational commitment to students, while at the same time acknowledging the financial challenges faced by our district residents. Additionally, the bus proposition passed with a 195-52 margin and Melanie Martin was re-elected to a 3-year term. I also want to thank those who filled out a feedback form. I will be sharing those comments with the Board members, and we will be mindful of the issues and concerns that have been raised. People continue to be concerned about the programs and opportunities no longer available because of program and staff cuts made over the past four years. A few shared their belief that the per-student spending was not justified given the performance of students on standardized testing and declining enrollment. There were numerous questions and comments regarding the merger study. Many expressed concern about the Board not allowing the community to weigh in on whether to continue with the study when it comes back from the State Education Department. I can assure everyone that our Board is unanimous in the belief that any decision about a potential merger must be based on a vote of the community. There was also concern about what the Hamilton district may or may not do when the study is returned. While there is nothing we can do about the decision Hamilton will make in this regard, I think there is a need for the Board and myself to re-communicate the academic and financial factors that led to our decision to investigate a possible merger with Hamilton rather than with Madison and/or Stockbridge Valley. The motivation for moving ahead with a study with Hamilton lies in the fact that the tax rates between our two communities is very similar, but much higher in the other two. The preliminary study data indicates that this merger could result in improved educational opportunities, and at the same time a lower tax rate in both districts. A merger with Madison or Stockbridge however, would mean a significant tax savings in those districts with a much more modest, flat, or even increased tax rate for Morrisville-Eaton. So it was the potential for educational program improvements and tax realities that led to the decision to conduct the study with Hamilton. Again, thank you for your support and input. The future will continue to be challenging, but we have a very dedicated staff, a supportive community and most importantly – very talented and deserving children who depend on us to help them reach their full potential.

Sincerely, Michael R. Drahos, Superintendent

DISTRICT NEWS 2013 Instruction and Non-Instructional Employee of the Year Morrisville-Eaton is blessed with many dedicated staff members committed to fostering a strong and positive learning community. While it is hard to single out any individual, each year the Board of Education recognizes an employee of the year from both our instructional and non-instructional staff. On behalf of our Board of Education, I would like to congratulate each of the nominees for the 2013 Employee of the Year. This year’s instructional nominees were: Michele Cesta, Beth Geatrakas, Laurie Haswell, Jacqueline Storer, and Molly Wheaton. The non-instructional nominees were: Linda Bataille, Richard Bowie, Mike Corpin, Sandy Eaton, Janice Goff, and Marva Maciag. Marva and Beth were ultimately chosen as the 2013 recipients.

Pictured above from left to right: Marva Maciag, Mr. Drahos and Beth Geatrakas

Marva began working for M-ECS in 1988, which makes this her 25th year, or silver anniversary. Marva actually received multiple nominations for the recognition this year and each of the nominations was endorsed by multiple people including parents, teachers, colleagues, and district residents. These nominations include “modeling good citizenship, treating all children and colleagues with respect and providing a nurturing and compassionate environment. During the past quarter century she has worn many hats from serving in the cafeteria, playground, hallways, and most recently in the kindergarten playground. She has been described by previous supervisors with words such as “flexible, sense of humor, dependable, and team player”. At the recognition ceremony, Mr. Drahos added, “I would add my own observation that when I see Marva working with kids, she is genuinely invested in their well being.” Beth also received multiple nominations from her colleagues this year. Beth joined our learning community in January of 1996 as the school media specialist. The characteristics used to describe Beth include, unfailingly positive, excellent resource, dedicated to learning, tireless and genuine. Her professionalism, commitment to high standards, ability to work with others, and knowledge of her field of expertise led previous administrators to refer to her an integral part of the learning community. Rather than coasting into her final years, Beth has been committed to providing the instruction which will be critical to library and research skills for all of our students. She was committed to making sure our students were college and career ready before that was even a State Education catch phrase.

PTO News As the school year comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the PTO volunteers who have assisted at so many activities throughout the year! Most recently we have provided support to the following activities: Community Appreciation Dessert during the budget vote, Junior Prom, Writer’s Jubilee by providing volunteers as well as breakfast and lunch for the presenters, ice cream for all teachers and staff for Teacher Appreciation week, snacks for all students in grades 3 – 8 for each day of state testing; ice cream for the Elementary Honor Roll receptions, a free yearbook and gift certificate to a restaurant in Morrisville for each grade at the Middle/High School Honor Roll receptions as well as a cafeteria snack for each honor roll recipient, movie nights and Kindergarten welcome bags. In the near future we will be providing monetary support for the admission fee for the 5th grade trip to Civil War Days, the 1st grade etiquette trip to the Purple Salamander, the 6th grade bon voyage breakfast, the 8th grade picnic and the Senior breakfast, which are still to come. We will also be providing a scholarship to a graduating senior pursuing a degree in the education field. Finally, I would like to thank parents. Your assistance in our Gertrude Hawk candy sale, Box Tops for Education, school pictures and purchasing MECS clothing provides PTO with the funds we need to be able to sponsor all of these activities. I hope everyone has a great summer and please consider joining PTO in the fall! We are always looking for volunteers. Lynda Lehr, PTO President

ELEMENTARY NEWS Mrs. Smith’s Class Goes to Washington by Air Mail! Shortly after the presidential election, Mrs. Smith’s 4th grade class wrote the President of the United States. They shared problems that concerned 4th graders. They asked President Obama if he could help solve some of their concerns. During the month of March, an official letter was received from the White House! It was an exciting day to know that our letters had been read by the President. We were so proud that he acknowledged the importance of the 4th grade students’ opinions and concerns at Morrisville-Eaton!

Third Grade Writing Stars! On Friday, May 17, 2013, four ER Andrews 3rd graders were honored at the Colgate Bookstore in Hamilton, NY. These students wrote and illustrated fantasy stories for the Chenango Valley Scribes Young Writers and Illustrators Contest.

ELEMENTARY NEWS

A Message From the Elementary Principal The school year is winding down and summer is almost here! Continue learning with your child this summer. Read different kinds of materials together: books, the comic pages, magazines, etc. Find a good book of jokes and read those to each other. Take a walk with a book about birds or plants and identify some together. Read about places to go and plan a visit. We have many great resources in our area including the Abolition Hall of Fame and Gerrit Smith Estate in Peterboro, the newly opened Eaton Museum, the Great Swamp Conservancy in Canastota, and the Chenango Canal Trail which starts in Hamilton and goes through Bouckville. Local libraries are also sponsoring children’s programs this summer. Look for information on these during our last week of school.

Second graders Josh & Evan have their books signed by Jerry Pinkney.

Time spent learning together shows your child that learning is important to you, helps increase your child’s knowledge, and gives you a shared experience. What could be better than that?! As always, thank you for your continued support in your children’s education. Have a nice summer! Sincerely,

Debra Dushko

Illustrator & Caldecott Winner, Jerry Pinkney visits Illustrator & Caldecott winner, Jerry Pinkney visited E.R. Andrews Elementary students on Friday, April 19th. Mr. Pinkney is the well-known illustrator of over 100 books for children and the winner of the 2010 Caldecott Award, five Caldecott Honor Awards and Coretta Scott King Awards. He has been illustrating children’s books since 1964 and his books provide positive images for African-American children and other children of color. During the weeks leading up to his visit, all of the students heard stories and had lessons planned around Mr. Pinkney’s books during library class. Each class contributed to our school’s version of The Lion & the Mouse, based on Mr. Pinkney’s wordless book of the same name. The three versions of the story can be seen in the elementary halls – one is in the main hall; one in the hall next to the gym, and the third is in the library hall. Stop down to the elementary school and read them! Mr. Pinkney gave three presentations to the students throughout the day on Friday, and signed books. He talked with the grades about how he got into illustrating and demonstrated Jerry Pinkney demonstrates his his drawing technique for the students. drawing technique.

All of the students were excited about Mr. Pinkney’s visit with us and all had a good time. Mr. Pinkney was impressed by the way our students behaved and the way our teachers interacted with the students. He also said that our school was full of love and that our students were in a good place. He mentioned that this was one of the best school visits he’s had. Kudos to our students and teachers!!

DISTRICT NEWS Writers’ Jubilee 2013 This year’s Writers’ Jubilee was held on Saturday, April 20th. It was a fun and exciting day for all who attended. This year’s keynote speaker was Jerry Pinkney. Mr. Pinkney is an illustrator and Caldecott Winner from Westchester County, NY. During his keynote speech, he talked about how he got started in illustrating, the person who influenced him the most, and the obstacles he’s overcome. Mr. Pinkney also did two workshops on Saturday, where he talked more about illustrating and demonstrated his drawing techniques.

Christie Casciano and Rose Mary Moziak talk with Writers’ Jubilee participants about creating a graphic novel.

This year there were 22 workshops during the two sessions on Saturday morning. These workshops were given by 18 presenters, which include many local people. Local author Barbara Linsley from Brookfield gave presentations on how to paint a picture with your words, and Tom Lemery gave acting tips and tricks. Ian Domes let participants experience what it was like being a photographer and a model for an hour, and local news anchor, Christie Casciano and her sister, Rose Mary Moziak presented on how to create a graphic novel. Brynn & Daniel Semeraro taught participants the basic of Improv; local author, Dorothy Stacy, had participants creating creepy menus and several local poets showed participants how to express themselves in poetry. Our own Mrs. Lake had participants making “edible” poetry; Mrs. Phillips help participants create a scrapbook page with their own photos and Mrs. Holmes taught how to make pop-up cards. The Writers’ Jubilee cover was designed by our own up-and-coming artist, Dale Lake, who received a signed program from Mr. Pinkney. The workshops varied in theme, but all had something to do with communication. There were workshops on poetry, publishing manuscripts, pop-up cards, writing stories, photography, acting, and much, much more. The event was attended by 150+ students (and adults) from Morrisville and surrounding school districts. In addition to the workshops, the participants could peruse the Scholastic Book Fair and Colgate Bookstore and have their books signed by the authors and illustrators. The PTO put on a delicious spread for the presenters in the library. The day was enjoyed by all who attended (participants, presenters, and volunteers alike). A HUGE Thank You to: the Board of Education, the MECS administration, the faculty and staff, the custodial and cafeteria staff, the PTO, the Colgate Bookstore, and area businesses and associations for their support of this event. A special thank you to all the volunteers who dedicate their time and talents in making the Writers’ Jubilee a successful day.

ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE/HIGH NEWS Peterboro Civil War Living History Education Day On Friday, June 7, 2013 the Smithfield Community Association will host the Peterboro Civil War Living History Education Day. Re-enactors from all over the eastern United States travel to Peterboro for the annual Civil War Weekend event. This year the weekend fundraising event will be held on June 8th and 9th. The weekend kicks off with an educational day for 5th grade students on Friday, June 7. One hundred seventy fifth graders from the M-ECS, Madison, Hamilton and Stockbridge Valley Central School districts will take part in the program.

Our Dandy Digestive System! Students in 3P have been learning about their body systems! We measured yarn the length of our digestive system, from the start of the esophagus to the end of the large intestine. We were amazed at how long our digestive system actually is. The yarn went from our classroom door to Mr. Martin’s door! That’s a lot to be kept right inside our bodies!

The event gives the students an opportunity to see and talk with reenactors of historic soldiers, nurses, medics, and even President Abraham Lincoln in person. The students will talk to people who dedicate much time researching the subject through primary documents like family diaries, letters, and photographs. While in Peterboro, students will also tour the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark and the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum at the Smithfield Community Center. This year the students will view a facsimile of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation also found upstairs in the center. The students spend the weeks before the event studying the Civil War era, and the 19th century social movements that influenced the lives of Americans, making it one of the biggest topics covered in the 5th grade social studies curriculum. They concentrate on what it was like to live in that time, and the Living History Day is a perfect way to compliment the students’ studies. Morrisville-Eaton teacher and member of Smithfield Community Association, Mrs. Carrie Martin, has coordinated the Peterboro Civil Living History Day for the past 9 years. It offers so many students from the region a wonderful opportunity to learn how important their local history is in relation to the larger history of the United States. The M-ECS fifth grade classes wish thank the Smithfield Community Association, The 12th US, and the Civil War Heritage Foundation for providing this event. We also thank the PTO for helping with the admission, and MECS seniors and Camden High School history students for presenting and helping out with the event.

DISTRICT NEWS Teachers Wear Blue Jeans for Scholarship

NEWS FROM THE ATHLETIC OFFICE As the end of the spring season is upon us we would like to thank all the athletes and their parents for a successful and enjoyable sports year. We would also like to congratulate Jessica Chandler and Alex Clark as they have been selected to represent Morrisville-Eaton as our Section III Scholar Athletes.

Have you ever walked into either the elementary or middle-high school on a Friday and wondered why the teachers are wearing blue jeans? It is not just a dress down day. Those blue jeans are supporting great opportunities at Morrisville-Eaton CSD. Each Friday faculty and staff have the opportunity to pay for the privilege of wearing blue jeans to work. At the elementary school this money is used to fund the annual Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) program. At the Middle-High School this money is used to fund the annual faculty/staff commencement awards and to help members of our school community during times of need. This year, the middle-high school staff has raised and given away over $1000.

Morrisville-Eaton Faculty Association Gives Back If you are a member of a labor union, have you ever wondered where all of the money you pay in union dues goes? For members of the Morrisville-Eaton Faculty Association a good amount of that money goes back into our learning community. This year our association has given over $1000 in donations. All of these donations go to programs that directly benefit the students of Morrisville-Eaton. Some of the programs our dues supported this year include the GAA Christmas Program, the Morrisville Area Children’s Christmas program, the MECS Yearbook, Parents as Reading Partners, the HOBY Student Leadership Conference, and the Writers’ Jubilee.

Summer is a great time to have your child’s immunizations updated and have physicals completed. All new entrants and students in Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th, 7th and 10th grades need current physicals on file. Current means done within 1-year prior to entering that grade level. Physicals are required to include the weight category status of each child (% and BMI). Students entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, 6th grade and going to college typically need immunization updates. All children entering school for the first time (Pre-K or K) and in 2nd and 4th, 7th and 10th are required to provide a dental certificate done within the past year.

PLEASE provide the school with required documentation before school starts in September. If you have a question or concern, feel free to call: High School Mrs. Martorana (684-5903) or Elementary Mrs. Burt (684- 5909).
