REPORT

CONTEXT The second wave of Covid19 in India, which started in mid-March, and peaked in mid-May, had slowly waned away by July. According to public health experts, the new deadly wave was caused by the delta variant, which is more transmissible and affects the younger population, unlike the original strain, which mostly affected the elderly. At its peak, 400,000 cases were being reported daily in India. Community-level outbreak, increased hospitalisations and rise in deaths were reported from regions, where low-income families resided.

Across the country, the healthcare system had totally collapsed, even before the wave reached its peak. Shortages of medical-grade oxygen, hospital beds and life-saving medicines led to preventable deaths.

Although the second wave affected people from all socio-economic backgrounds, lowincome households particularly struggled in accessing treatment.

The second wave induced fresh lockdowns derailed the gradual recovery of livelihoods.

Communities dependent on daily wages were left in the lurch, with no savings and no access to government ration. These families living in low-income communities were relying on relief from the civil society to sustain themselves.

Protective and hygiene items became costprohibitive and households were foregoing basic hygienic practices in order to reduce expenses. Therefore, equipping communities with adequate protective and hygiene items was essential not only as prevention against Covid19, but also other diseases caused by lack of hygiene.

INTERVENTION Don Bosco Network-BOSCONET in collaboration with Macquarie Group Foundation and State Bank of India distributed 'Health and Hygiene Kits' to vulnerable and marginalised households living in Delhi-NCR, Jhajjar and Mumbai.

People living in slums and streets, migrant workers, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable populations were identified in the target regions. These households were provided with the relief kits.

Social distancing measures were ensured during the distribution and local community leaders and government officials were engaged to smoothen the process and support for crowd management.

IEC Material was included in the relief kit. The material explained in local language Covid19 preventive measures and home isolation care guidelines by the Government of India (GOI).

The relief kits addressed the nutritional, protective and preventive needs of the communities affected by Covid19 lockdown and loss of livelihoods.
