Re ections on Joy by YOU

A conversation with Danielle York, CEO, and Andrea Corradini,

Danielle York, CEO

Pediatric hospitals and care facilities are the foundation of expanding programmatic impact. In what ways do the partnerships with them come to life?

We could not do the work we do without our healthcare partners. They are holistic enablers to our mission delivery. They have big jobs — they are highly focused on treatments to cure and extend life. What we are able to bring enhances what kids are experiencing as they go through those treatments. It’s a collaboration where they welcome us to support their patients’ emotional and mental wellness — through music, mentorship, and nature — and in doing that, hopefully alleviate some of the unavoidable challenges of these kids’ situations.

Corporate partners have helped fuel access to JoyRx programming across the nation. What have these partners fostered to support the organization’s expansion?

We nd that our corporate partners inherently understand the importance of expansion. I suppose it has a lot to do with recognizing how unique our programming is, and how critical the need remains — and the only way for us to address that need is broader reach. The business community is de ned by progress and evolution, so they support and invest in our pursuit of those fundamentals. This is seen pretty clearly in how we think about technology as a di erentiator, brand as an a nity builder, and inclusion as a measurement of success.

Day in and day out, the JoyRx sta continue to move the mission forward. What FY23 accomplishments are you most proud of?

It’s a long list. Our program team is relentless in their pursuit of creating transformational experiences for the children and families we serve — to see where we are now, present in 36 site locations across the United States, is all a testament to them and their e orts. I’m proud of our sta ’s one-team mentality — they work incredibly hard to be there for each other, in the midst of tremendous change, and I love seeing their wins achieved through collaboration. I’m most proud of our growth — in how we approach our impact, how we diversify our services, and how we de ne success. Our business has gotten more de ned, more complex, and certainly more deliberate over the last few years — and it’s our sta who have driven this to the betterment of the organization.

FY23 was a big year for scaling JoyRx Music in Austin, Texas.

How have you seen the Austin Leadership Council champion Joy in the community?

We have incredible leadership councils and a mighty governing board of directors who envelop our organization with smart thinking, thoughtful ambassadorship, and personal investment. All of our leadership groups are unique and bring diversity of perspective, skillset, and in uence to our e orts. Austin is special because the leadership group there is comfortable with our start-up position in that market. We were founded 28 years ago, but we’re still very much the new kid on the block in Austin — and their entrepreneurial strengths and mindset have accelerated everything in that region for us in a very short period of time.

How do you nd Joy in your life?

I nd Joy much the same way most people do — my family, rst and foremost. I’m thrilled to watch my son growing and becoming his own self with his own interests and identity. I’m blessed to still have my mom healthy and with us to enjoy the best parts of the seasons. I’m excited to think about new journeys with my husband — and so enjoy our time with my amazing in-laws. The older you get, the more time is of value — and the more it’s people, not products or production, that ful ll you. And I’m pretty old!

As you approach the end of your term as Board Chair, what are you most proud of?

As I re ect on the last two years, there are multiple areas of pride, but I think what rises to the top are our board members. The Board of Directors is only as strong as the collective dedication and experience our committed leaders bring to it, and I’m extremely proud of the group we have today — leaders with decades of experience with JoyRx, mixed with many new voices and fresh perspectives. Leaders we searched for who are the best in class in elds where JoyRx can leverage their expertise (e.g., legal, nance, marketing). And nally, leaders who are connecting JoyRx with their network so as JoyRx expands into new markets, we broaden our reach of support for the team as well.

What advice would you give the next JoyRx Board Chair?

Buckle up. JoyRx is on a path of growth and expansion, and it’s an incredibly exciting time to lead the Board. Danielle and her executive team are amazing in that they often leverage the Chair to be an active thought partner in strategic evolution, which allows active participation and dedication. I’d also remind the new Chair that this is rewarding volunteer work, and JoyRx is amazing at understanding there are capacity limitations and work so incredibly well to ensure it’s a manageable role.

Looking at the JoyRx community of contributors (sta , councils, donors, volunteers, etc.), where does your hope for growth lie?

I feel it’s important we have balanced contributory growth. We’ve always had an army of incredible volunteers and individual and corporate donors, and I feel we can start nding some larger growth engines with more sustainable and less volatile year-to-year dependance.

As you conclude your time as Board Chair, what lessons will you carry with you?

I was quite nervous coming into this role; it was an unfamiliar space with such incredible leaders, and I wasn’t sure what I could bring to the table. Over the last couple years there have been some incredible challenges, and I’ve learned that deep listening to all points of view is incredibly important to be able to be the best voice of support to JoyRx. There is a lot of complexity in Board leadership, and nding the best path through, in what are often polarities, is something I’ll continue to leverage in my professional career.

What has been your most Joyful experience as Board Chair?

I go back to the humans with whom I developed deep and meaningful relationships — most importantly Danielle, who is leading JoyRx to such an incredible future, and the Board Executive Committee, with whom I’ve spent hours upon hours, and will without a doubt continue to leverage as advisors and invite over to dinner as friends for years to come!

Your contributions enable our programming to be o ered at no expense to the children and families we serve. We are grateful for the support of our community near and far, and we work hard to maintain the highest levels of transparency and stewardship, as re ected in testimonials from third parties like Great Nonpro ts, where we are a top-rated organization. We are also a proud Candid Platinumrated charity and receive three stars on Charity Navigator.

Since 1995, donors have fueled every drumbeat, every belly laugh shared with a trusted friend, and every breath of ocean air that our JoyRx Music, Mentorship, and Nature programs have provided for the families we serve. We are proud of the reputation we have built and of the moments of Joy that make us who we are — we couldn’t do any of it without YOU!

National Impact

At JoyRx, we know that Joy is an unlimited resource and an undeniable need for children everywhere. That’s why our goal and focus is to create equitable access to our no-cost programming for all children, regardless of diagnosis, ability, language, location, age, socioeconomic status, or ethnicity.

As youth isolation and mental health challenges continue to cause damaging e ects, the demand for our services is at an all-time high. We have big goals to help meet the emotional needs of seriously ill kids across the United States. Here’s how we’re doing so far:

198,067 JoyRxInteractions (up19%fromFY22)

27,709 KidsServed (up30%fromFY22)

23,788 FamilyMembersServed (up7%fromFY22)

Our de nition of JoyRx interactions is informed by a thoughtful assessment of our relationships and service engagements, considering kids and adults present and the period of time we are with them.

We are dedicated to measuring the reach of our programs to children, families, and healthcare workers. Due to the nature of our music programming, we are unable to track and report on unique children served and some metrics include duplicated tallies.

Connor felt the impact of Joy-based programming during his recent hospital stay. After being served by JoyRx Music, he wanted to pay it forward. His solution? A concert in the hospital family lounge!

Read his powerful story here.

Watch the video here.

When we surveyed our hospital partners on the e ectiveness of Joy-based programming, 93 percent of our partners reported that JoyRx Music helps to create a positive hospital experience for children.

Through three modes of delivery, we reach children with in-person bedside visits (Live), virtual music sessions (Digital Live), and 24/7 online music performances and lessons (On Demand). Our Live music services are now available in both Portland, OR, and Austin, TX.

When engaging in person, children can choose to watch a Live music session, request a song, sing along, participate in music lessons, or grab an instrument to join in — whatever feels right and brings Joy to them in that moment.

With Digital Live and On Demand o erings, we can reach more children who are undergoing treatment at home or within a healthcare facility where we do not have JoyRx Live music specialists. We partner with hospital sta to integrate music into their existing entertainment systems or through real-time, one-on-one virtual interactions. In addition, we always have on-demand content available, with exclusive artist performances, music lessons, and more.

“I would one hundred percent recommend JoyRx for any family. I would one hundred percent advocate for anyone to use the music program. It’s amazing. It made a big di erence in our son’s journey and recovery. It helped us appreciate music even more, too. We already had a love for music but even more now — I told Connor, ‘Hey, when you get older, if you want, you can go play music for people who need it. In the hospital, at the old folks’ home. Wherever.’ Musicislifeandlightshimupandhehelpslightothers up,too.That’swhatJoyRxgavemyson.”

Artist Partnership

This year, we teamed up with artists across the country to bring the healing power of music to children in need of Joy. From personalized concerts for kids, headlining charity bene t concerts, and livestreamed, virtual concerts via hospital CCTV, artists such as Amos Lee, Band of Horses, SaulPaul, Smith & Yarn, and Shiela dedicated their musical talents to JoyRx Music.

New in FY23, JoyRx Music created monthly virtual livestream events, securely broadcasted via Vimeo. These concerts were livestreamed to our partner hospitals across the country, allowing hundreds of kids to enjoy music from Disney songs to pop favorites to modern classics. Kids, families, and hospitals all over the country have access to live and interactive concerts each month from the convenience of their personal devices such as laptops, phones, or tablets.

Our music specialists take requests in real time and kids enjoy the music no matter where they are. The most requested songs this year? “We Don’t Talk about Bruno,” from Disney’s Encanto, and “How Far I’ll Go,” from Disney’s Moana.

Oregon Symphony Musicians Holiday Show:

Our biggest livestream of the year, dozens of hospitals were invited to attend and enjoy the holiday-themed concert, with the most song requests we’ve ever received during a livestream event.

Read more about the holiday cheer! For the year, we hosted 11 total Vimeo livestream concerts and hosted 2 unique events.

UMass Arts in Health Event:

In collaboration with UMass music therapy and art therapy sta , JoyRx Music helped celebrate Arts in Health Month with a unique livestream concert. JoyRx provided live music while UMass art therapists led kids in arts and crafts activities, and UMass music therapists led kids in breathing and movement exercises.

Altogether,duringour 2022–2023year,27,613 childrenparticipatedin 120,365musicinteractions.

Musical interactions profoundly impact a child’s treatment experience by elevating their mood, easing their perception of pain, and reducing anxiety.

JoyRx Mentorship fosters trusted companionship to inspire laughter and distraction during an isolating time. Our trained, adult volunteer JoyRx Mentors o er emotional support to the child they are matched with and to the child’s family. Our JoyRx Mentorship specialists thoughtfully match kids with their mentors based on hobbies, interests, and parent and child preferences. Our mentors show up to hospital visits with curated bags lled with games, crafts, and other fun things tailored to the child. For parents, these visits o er a brief respite, allowing a moment to talk to their medical team, or some time for themselves to grab co ee, spend time with their other children, or take the opportunity to step away and breathe. Mentorship matches can last multiple years, and the bonds of friendship are often still strong long after the nal treatment.

85 percent of parents reported a stable or improved sense of emotional support for their child when matched with a JoyRx Mentor.

As of November 2022, many of the visitation restrictions hospitals had put in place to protect children and families during the pandemic were lifted, allowing our mentors to visit their mentees in the hospitals once again. Now that we are back to making in-person matches, we are diligently working to connect more children with mentors as we strive to resume our pre-pandemic match level, ensuring every child desiring a mentor has one. If you are interested in volunteering as a JoyRx Mentor, please visit our website for program requirements and to get started as a volunteer.

“I’m eternally grateful for the work JoyRx does, bringing surprises and Joy to all these little ones in these di cult times. Thank you for the time JoyRx Mentorship dedicates to my princess and for being there for me, too. This unconditional support and friendship mean so much to my family.”

This year, we focused on hosting fun, creative in-person activities and events with JoyRx Mentorship families around the community and at our o ce. We’ve provided donated tickets to sporting events, museums, and concerts, and hosted themed arts and crafts nights around the holidays. Our Pumpkin Palooza in October was the rst family event we’d held at JoyRx headquarters in almost three years, celebrating Halloween. Following that, we hosted Jolly Jamboree in December and Happy Hearts in February.

Joy by the Slice

Flying Pie Pizzeria in Portland, Oregon has been an avid supporter of JoyRx for many years, providing pizza donations to JoyRx Mentorship events and meetings each month. To date, Ty DuPuis, co-owner of Flying Pie, has donated over $40,000 in pizza to JoyRx, often personally handdelivering the pies to our headquarters. Joy never tasted so good!

Community Support

We’re so grateful to our community partners who help make our JoyRx Mentorship events a success. With 1,105 donated experiences, kids and families (often with their mentors) were able to experience Joy in a number of unique ways, thanks to the generosity of companies like the Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Timbers & Thorns football clubs, Oregon State University’s Dream Come True program, and many more! In November, we partnered with LAIKA Studios to host an interactive art night and workshop to help kids get interested in the arts. If you have an experience you’d like to donate to JoyRx kids and families, please reach out to Mentorship@JoyRx.org.

This no-cost, ve-day retreat restores energy and provides respite for families battling pediatric illness.

“We loved every minute of [our stay at the Caring Cabin]. My children had a blast. I never thought that so many months after a cancer diagnosis we would be having so much fun!”

Suzanne, Yunis’ Mom

“We had a wonderful time at the Caring Cabin. I am so grateful for the opportunity because we needed it so badly. It has been a di cult, lonely, and very stressful three-year journey so far, and this is one of the rst times we were all able to relax and just be! Thank you so much!”

— Tay, Khyraya’s Mom

Braylon and his family spent some time at the Caring Cabin, and his mom, Jamie, sent us some sweet moments she captured while they hung out, relaxed, played, and just enjoyed a stress-free week “away from hospitals and treatment.”

“It was such a peaceful and relaxing time, and it was very hard to leave. It was some of the best memories we’ve made.”

An advocate for the power of Joy in her child’s life, Priscilla highlights the impact music medicine has on hospitalized children. As a Champion of Joy, Priscilla stands as an advocate and ambassador to the power of emotional healing through JoyRx.

“Seeing JoyRx at Kamari’s appointments has been a true pleasure and we are so thankful for the happiness that they bring to what can be so stressful. I watched my daughter’s face enamored by the JoyRx Music Specialist playing the guitar, and I joked with her dad that we’ll need to budget guitar lessons for Kamari in the future… We are so grateful for programs like JoyRx. The love that exudes in their work is clear. It takes a giant reservoir of compassion to follow journeys like ours and bring light and happiness to the scariest moments.”

Teen Recipients of Inaugural Paul Hogan Award

On Sunday, September 25, 2022, six Catholic schools in the Portland metro area came together to participate in the ninth annual Walk for Joy event. In a show of solidarity and compassion, high school students worked to raise funds for JoyRx and raise awareness of pediatric cancer during the month of September.

New this year was the inaugural Paul Hogan Community Award, given to an outstanding student leader from each school, named in honor of former Jesuit High School principal, former JoyRx board member, and key Joy Maker, Paul Hogan.

“For 25 years, the students of the Catholic high schools of Portland have danced, walked, run, and brought Joy to our city’s streets in support of all those kids served by JoyRx who can’t yet dance, run, or sometimes even walk due to serious illness. These student leaders are inspiring and represent the thousands of Portland teens who have joined together to support JoyRx over the years. These ‘kids for kids’ truly rock our world.”

When Chloe rst saw pictures of Beth (aka @pardonthyfrench), it was love at rst sight: She immediately asked her mom if they could follow them on TikTok and Instagram. When Beth sold plushies to bene t our programs last fall, Chloe couldn’t wait to get one, too.

As soon as that plush arrived, Chloe was so excited. “Beth!” she yelled out happily and immediately tried on the plush Beth’s hat to see if it would t her, too. (It did!)

Since then, Chloe takes her Beth plushie with her everywhere. When anyone asks her about the plushie and why she likes it so much, she says simply: “Because Beth had cancer just like me.”

Because Chloe is such a super-fan of the pup, Beth’s owner reached out for a surprise meeting between the two. Together, alongside other Portland Joy Makers Sizzle Pie and Proud Mary Co ee, Chloe got to enjoy a perfect day with a new friend.

“The experience [of cancer] took a real emotional, mental, and physical toll on me as I struggled to take care of my daughter, and I had three other kids that needed attention and no family in the area. And I would take her alone to the hospital for treatments where we would spend long days alone. For us, JoyRx was just such a blessing — to have someone who came and distracted and entertained her meant a lot. Someone who cared about her and made her laugh and paid attention to her and treated her like she was the most special person in the world, which took some pressure o of me and gave me a chance to just breathe. I immediately knew that I wanted to make some sense out of our experience. It had to have meaning to me. And so, the rst thing I thought when JoyRx knocked on our door was ‘when we get through this, I want to be that person. I want to be the one who knocks on the door of these vulnerable families and o er support and moments of Joy.’”
