Cortina are no longer produced; the Opel is still available in Europe. I believe there is a gene in the Gatton DNA that causes us to want to drive something dif ferent from the ordi nary cars you meet on the road. My Grandpa Gatton had a Whippet automobile with wood en spoke wheels, then switched to Studebaker pickups. I don’t recall all my dad’s vehicles, but some of them were an AMC Eagle, a Ford Econoline pickup, and a Corvair.Once I graduated and we moved to our “new” house in Garden Grove, we spotted a car with some style, on Eldon(?) Spidle’s lot in Leon. It was a ‘69 Plymouth Barracuda fastback, with a slant-6 engine, dark blue. Nice car. Traded that boxy Cortina for it. In a few years, when we went our separate ways, Margaret kept the Barracuda and I went out and bought one that looked just like it, only a year older, with a V-8. For awhile we had twin cars. Then, oh my goodness! I spotted a ‘69 American Motors AMX on a car lot, East 14th Street in Des Moines. Couldn’t have been much more than three years old, low miles, nice condition, with a 4-speed trans mission and a 390 en gine. It was quite fast, and it was SO cheap. The salesman was a guy I had taught with, and I think the Volkswagon dealership just want ed that muscle car off theirSolot.now I still had my old Studebaker, and the AMX. About that time, I added a ‘65 Honda Dream mo torcycle to my fleet, and rode it much of the time when the weather was nice. I re call trips to Sioux City, and Mason City on the bike, to see a new girl in my life, who was soon to become my wife. As Judy and I started our married life in Mason City, eventually moved to Leon and bought an old nursing home on South Main, it was not a very exciting time in the world of cars in the garage and driveway. I sold the old VW, previ ously mentioned, and during this time Roger Main, mild mannered UPS driver and car buff, pestered me to sell him my Studebaker. I finally relented some time around 1980, and he still has the car to day. In the sale though, I took his ‘54 Chevrolet in trade, and it turned out to be one of the best cars I ever had. After a reset, which included a divorce and a remar riage, and a new job, I spent four summers driving to and from Maryville, Missouri to work on my master’s degree. For six weeks, each of those summers, 160 miles round trip, I drove the old Chevy, and one flat tire in those four years was all the trouble I had with that car. Definitely a keeper!Sometime close to when I let the Studebaker go, I also parted with the AMX, selling it to Galen Kauzlarich. It had started to get rusty holes around the back wheels, really needed a new interior, and I didn’t want to, nor could afford to deal with those issues. When I see what a ‘69 AMX is selling for today, that is definitely one I should do we have so far, for extinct cars? Studebaker, two Plymouths, Javelin, Cortina, and AMX. (Watch for more to come.)

Every now and then, someone poses a question on facebook, asking “What is the one car that you wish you’d kept?” I can’t really an swer that question in the way it was intend ed. There is no ONE car I have owned that I wish I still had. If I had a garage big enough, and had won the lot tery some years ago, I wish I had almost all of them back. Perhaps not the little black ‘66 Volkswagen bug I bought from Lawrence Morrell. As people told me, they are fun to drive, but mine spent almost as much time in Doyle Stevens’ shop as it did with me. It was a good day, when I saw it leave my drive way with a new owner. I sold it cheap, and the new owner knew it had problems, but I felt badly that it did not make it quite all the way to its new home in Mercer, Missouri before it stopped running.

A little more than three years ago, one of my columns detailed the history of my first two automobiles, a ‘30 Model A sedan, and a ‘35 Studebaker President, the one I drove in my senior year of high school. I men tioned the car I bought when I sold the Model A. It was also a Ford, but 24 years newer, a Skyliner, with the front half of the top made of green plastic, an earlyday version of a sun roof. After my first year of college, I acquired the older one of my parents’ cars, which was a ‘51 Plymouth Cranbrook, club coupe. I skipped a year of col lege, then returned to Cedar Falls with the Plymouth, a new wife and a new mobile home. I made my sis ter good deals on first, the Skyliner and then later, the Plymouth. The reason for getting rid of the Plymouth was because my wife Margaret and I wanted to get a new car. We chose a very low-priced and economical car, a pretty, light blue Opel Kadette fastback. A coworker of Margaret’s bought the same mod el, except in light tan, and they made a cute little pair when parked together.Wereally liked the Opel fastback, but when American Motors premiered the Javelin, Margaret and I decid ed we should have one. Though I was going to school, we both had jobs, and cars and car payments were not all that high in the 1960s. We had the Javelin about two years. Then the tires were worn out, and instead of getting new ones, we traded the Javelin for a new Ford Cortina, an English car. We were do ing a lot of driving be tween Cedar Falls and Garden Grove, it got better mileage than the Javelin, and payments were cheaper. The car was white, but we got them to paint it a baby blue, like the Opel, and then I painted the hood of it flat black, to match the windshield wipers and window trim, and just because it was a cool thing to do, at the time.As I continue de scribing vehicles I’ve owned, it’s interest ing to note that many of them are now ex tinct. With the ones I’ve mentioned so far, Studebaker and Plymouth and Ford
