I told you in last week’s column that I was meeting with a South School co-work er and I did on Tuesday. Luci Weber spent the week in Decatur County contacting friends that she had made during her 5 year teaching career in Leon. Luci is retired and lives in Austin, Texas. She had rented the cabin at Nine Eagles for the week and Charlotte Braby stayed with her. I drove to the cabin on Tuesday. We sat on the porch that over looked the lake and the trees. It was a beautiful and peaceful setting to catch up on all the lat est. Hours went by but it didn’t seem like that much time. Oh, what a wonderful visit we had! Then on Thursday, Luci and Charlie stopped by my house to bid fare well til the next Iowa visit. My South School friends (family) are the absolute best!

Abandoned cem eteries are really ev erywhere in the grand scheme of things. In the 1800's before specif ic ground had been set aside for the purpose of burial; families had their own spots. Some unfortunately were bur ied during their journey and others beside their home. Some of these cemeteries have been located well enough to be called 'abandoned', but there is history there that has been re corded. One is the Madarasz Cemetery in Richland Township. There are no tombstones. This abandoned small fam ily cemetery is not visi ble today, but was near the east side of the road in the SE 1/4 of Section 36. It had four graves of which two were babies. Once there were small stones, a lilac bush and a fence. Ladislaus MADARASZ was born in Hungary, September 22, 1811 and became Secretary of State in Hungary.Hisfirst wife died in 1843 and he came to New Buda in Decatur County in 1851. Second wife, Sibila OSOLOCK, who was born in Germany in 1836, were married in Decatur County before 1862. They bought 340 acres of land in Section 36. Their oldest daugh ter (Note from Janet KOZLAY: "Bela is a common boy's name in Hungary", possibly this should read oldest son), Bela L. MADARASZ, was a school teacher born in 1862 and died in 1886 and was buried in the Munyon Cemetery located one mile to the east.It is presumed that the burials are Ladislaus and Sibila MADARASZ and two of their children, al though no death re cords or dates can be found.

CD's offense. The team continued to set themselves back and negate big gains with self-inflicted wounds. "We want to play free and aggressive, but we also need to show discipline so we don't shoot ourselves in the foot," said Head Coach Jon Pedersen. "It is the coaches' re sponsibility to put the team in situations in practice that simulate game situations so we can play fast but also under control. It is something we will plan for in the com ing weeks in practice and try to execute on Fridays.""We need to get better and it falls on the coaches to show the way and players to accept the chal lenge and produce." CD's defense bent, but never truly broke while in the red zone. The Cardinal defense held SWV scoreless until the fourth quar ter. Kale Rockhold led the way with 11 total tackles, 2 for a loss. Ty Rasmussen was re sponsible for 5.5 tack les, 1 being for a loss. Scrivner had 5 total tackles and 1 sack.

River Hamaker was all over the court. She led the Cardinals in digs with 13. Hamaker also led CD in service aces with Preslee4. Jones had an impressive run at the end of the first set. Bedford was on set point at 24-15, but Jones served effec tively. CD won seven straight points before Bedford could sweat out the last point need ed to win the first set 25-22.In addition to Horn leading with 4 kills, CD Rotary Exchange Student Giorgia Pelliciari recorded 2 kills along with Amy Potter, Hamaker and Lexi Jensen 1 each. Tristyn Leymaster and Potter each earned 2 assists along with Hamaker, Jensen and Kaycee Boyce with 1 each.Potter and Pelliciari each recorded 1 solo block.River was the scrappiest with 13 digs joined by teammates Horn with 5, Jensen 4, Leymaster and Breegan Lindsey 3 each, Potter and Jones 2 a piece and Boyce 1. CD Offense Stifled by SWV, Drop Season Opener
By Zach Smith Central Decatur football opened the 2022 season on the road in Corning for a non-district matchup against the Southwest Valley Timberwolves. Last season, CD shut out SWV 28-0. Twenty-eight com bined points were scored once again, this time in favor of the Timberwolves as they won 17-11. It was a defensive battle from the begin ning. Neither team scored in the first quarter, and only one play occurred outside of CD's 50 yard-line. The Cardinals had a chance to score early after Champ Walker returned a punt 70+ yards deep in the Timberwolves's red zone, but a holding penalty negated his return, a recurring problem for CD this game. The only score in the first half came off a blocked punt. Marshall Knapp from SWV blocked Jack Scrivner's punt at tempt through the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety. CD's defense would make a crucial goal line stand as time expired in the half to keep the score 0-2. There were four lead changes in the second half. Walker would start the back and forth by charging into the end zone on a 15-yard rush half way though the third quarter. A success ful two-point conver sion pass to Scrivner would fensewithThegoalleaddive.laterwouldEvanSWVfollow.quarterbackTimmermanscoretwodrivesonaone-yardCDretooktheona36-yardfieldbyKaleRockhold.Cardinalsled11-96:54remaining.TheCardinaldewasabletoforce
a quick stop from SWV on their next drive, but CD was not able to maintain a drive of their own. A punt by Scrivner placed the Timberwolves at their 45-yard line with three minutes remaining in the Onegame.play is all it took for Timmerman to break away for the longest, most impact ful play of the game, a 55-yard touchdown rush. His two-point conversion was suc cessful as well. The score would remain at 17-11 for the remain der of the 2:40 left in the SWV'sgame. defense seemed to have an answer for any thing CD attempted. The Cardinals were held to a total of 91 yards combined. Sam Boothe would throw for 86 yards off 8 completions on 18 attempts with 1 in terception that was deflected at the line. The Cardinal ground game was held to 5 to tal yards. Walker was the leading rusher with 18 yards on 11 carries. Walker broke away for the lone 15yard touchdown in the third Penaltiesquarter.plagued

75 YEARS AGO (August 28, 1947) Dean Akes, 27, LeRoy, was a patient at the Decatur County Hospital where he was being treated for burns. The accident occurred when a spark from a car on which Akes was working in his garage ignited gasoline on the floor. His hands and right side were quite severely burned. The barn and an adjoining shed at the Walter Scott farm northeast of Leon on the old Leon and Garden Grove road, were burned about 4 o'clock in the morn ing, when lightning struck the buildings during the heavy rain and electrical storm. Several hundred bales of hay and straw and a little over 100 bushels of oats were destroyed. Mr. Scott had some in surance.Leon played host to a celebrity. The fa mous labor leader, John L. Lewis, stopped at the Leon Hotel. Representatives of The Leon Journal-Reporter were on hand early that morning to interview, but the results were nil. John's comments when he emerged from the hotel cafe where he ate breakfast, were of his usual variety, terse and very uncommunicative. "I have nothing to say.... just passing through."
