Obesity is a grow ing epidemic in our country, and unfortu nately, the trend is also true in Decatur County. Obesity is a complex disease, and address ing excess weight is not a one-size-fits-all mod el. To help people in our region combat obe sity, and lead healthier lives, we are excited to announce the addition of a Medical Weight Loss Clinic to the DCH Outpatient Clinic. This month, Libby Allen joined our team full-time to continue to provide Rheumatology services for our region. Libby also specializes in a customized weight management program, Thanks to The Leon Journal-Reporter for their effort to high light community pride! Their "third story" on Paradise Farmers' Mar ket stirred me to go to my file cabinet and pull the file on Paradise Farmers' Market. Why would I have a file on Paradise Farm ers' Market? Because, I was one of five found ing members. The orga nizational meeting was held May 27, 2004, at the Leon Public Library. Darlene Richardson, Chairman and Market Manager; Judy Lan drum, Secretary/Trea surer; Cat Bethards, Everett Parmer; and Bud Parmer were all filled with anticipation and great pride in cre ating this venue for De caturDarleneCounty. Richard son sold farm crafts; Judy Landrum sold "absolutely delicious" pies; Cat Bethards sold unique and beauti ful crafts and flowers; and, of course, Everett and Bud Parmer sold their "perfectly grown" produce, melons, and pumpkins. (I'm sure Everett and Bud Par mer sold produce on their own before this.) That first year we had 14 vendors and many support organizations and Budbusinesses.Parmer had so many good stories to share, so I always looked forward to Thursday afternoon on the square. Ever ett Parmer was strong, sensible and could make us all laugh too. Everett is now Market Manager.Asummary of the successful first year of operation was printed in The Leon JournalReporter on November 3, 2004.Just so you know! Judy Landrum 30443 Co. Hwy. Grand River MELINDA MACKEY With the Iowa State Fair time here, I am reminded of Donald and Merna VanLaar. Known for growing some of the biggest and best produce around, they would bring some of the biggest to the state fair to compete. Then later on towards fall, you would see Donald's pickup loaded down with pumpkins. Grandma would take me out to visit Merna or on one of their many trips to town and we would get to see some of these monsters. The preschools and grade school field trips to see the pumpkin patch; the generations that have walked that pumpkin patch, amazing. Times have certainly changed since those car rides to Osceola and Leon for shopping with Grandma and Merna, but I'll always think of them this time of year. On Tuesday, ser vices were held in Leon for longtime resident Jimmie Lee. He was definitely one of Grand River's favorite charac ters. I don't think too many escaped a fin ger shaking from him. I think it is incredibly sweet the way the com munity has stepped up to honor Jimmie. A request was put out for photos for the ser vice, and there was a wonderful response. And the kindness of a few of our community members contacting people and making plans for the service. This is what Grand River is, taking care of each other. Times have changed a lot, but some of the important parts are still there. Our history proves it, and the actions of people today continue to make it true to this day. Jimmie would be touched. I would name names, but I'm not sure if they would want me to do that. I just hope they know they are ap preciated for putting time in to give him a nice service.Andit is Grand River Rodeo Weekend! I hope everyone has a fun weekend! Davis City LINDA BOOTHE Geez! Guess noth ing was going on this past week. I’ve pon dered what I should write about the whole day long. I think l’ll write about school starting in a few days. I can’t believe that the summer break is com ing to an end already. Just for a brief conver sation, let’s address some important things (to me) that we should be thinking about. One topic high on my list is bullying. So, if you see someone who is struggling to make friends or being bullied because he/she doesn’t have many friends or because they are shy or not as pretty or not dressed in the most ‘in’ clothes...PLEASE step up! Say hi or at least smile at them in the hallway. You will never know what that person might be facing outside of school. Your kind ness might just make a BIG difference in their life! And, talk to your kids about this so they will either step up themselves or report it to a faculty member. Let’s address the bus ride to and from school. Bus drivers take two breaks out of their day to drive the bus safety to school and back home each day. Talk to your kids about sitting in their seats and not causing a disruption on the bus. If the driver is distract ed, it could easily cause an accident. Teach respectfulness to all schoolTeachersemployees.have your child 7 plus hours a day. In a lot of cases, a teacher spends more of your child’s awake time with them than the par ent does. They have 20 plus other kids in the classroom to give indi vidual help to. So make sure your child is rest ed, has a good break fast and leaves the house with a positive attitude. And, you’re saying you’ve heard all this before and who is she that thinks she can preach? ALL I want is for everyone to have a good day and a great schoolNow,year!let’s send out some happy birth day wishes to Brook Tharp, Matt Marvin, Pam Barth, Travis Clark, Patty Pinegar, Rick Boswell, Amanda Fox, Palmer Erke, Ron Helton, Cory Byrd, Ramona Clark, Talya Waddell, Mary Jane Boswell Hunt, Emma Hess and Brandon Hinds. Happy Anniversary to Charity & Goo Hess on the 16th! Best wishes to all! Teacher: How old is yourKid:father? He is 6 yearsTeacher:old. What? How is that possible? Kid: Well, he be came a father only when I was born. Please call me with any and all your lo cal news at 442-3595.
