Tannehill to be next mayor of Oxford Robyn Tannehill has become the mayor-elect of the City of Oxford.

Friday at 5 p.m. was the deadline for any other citizen of Oxford to qualify for the mayoral race. Because no one else entered the race, Tannehill is now officially running unopposed, making her the next mayor of Oxford.

Tannehill announced her candidacy after current mayor Pat Patterson announced that he would not be running for a third

team, following in the footsteps of his predecessor, former mayor Richard Howorth.

Tannehill has been a resident of Oxford for nearly 30 years. She originally came here as a student at Ole Miss, and became a full-time resident upon graduation.

During her time in Oxford, Tannehill has served the school district’s parent teacher organizations and co-chaired the $30 million bond referendum

that went toward the construction of the new high school. She was the president of the OxfordLafayette Count Chamber of Commerce and the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council. Tannehill has also spent many hours volunteering in several different facets of the community.

The election, where Tannehill will be the only candidate on the ballot for mayor, is set for June 6.

Andrews, Herbert enter race for aldermen Two new candidates have entered the race for alderman within the City of Oxford.

Executive Director of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council Wayne Andrews,

50, announced this week that he would be running for Ward 6 alderman as a Democrat.

Republican Jason Bailey currently holds the seat. Andrews is the only other person

vying for Bailey’s position.

Andrews is well known in the community for his work with the arts council, a position that has allowed him to play a key role in the cultivation of Oxford’s

Art Scene.

Patrick Herbert, 25, has announced his candidacy for Ward 1 alderman, running as a Democrat. He will be facing up against incumbent alderman Rick

Addy, also a Democrat.

Herbert, who works as an adjuster at the Winchester plant, has lived in Oxford for seven years. He has spoken about Oxford’s need for more affordable

housing.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. Friday to enter the race of June’s upcoming election. The election will be held on June 6.

The End of All Music celebrates five years

Wednesday evening, The End of All Music celebrated their fifth year in business with friends, pre-release records, Busch Light and tasty jams.

The End of All Music opened their doors March 1 of 2012. Owner and operator David Swider opened the store simply because he loved records, and there was nowhere in town dedicated to selling vinyl. The last record shop had closed in Oxford nearly 6 years before.

“I’ve always believed that Oxford is definitely a town that needs and deserves a record store,” Swider said.

“This town has proved me right in that.”

Like most people, Swider’s love of music, and particularly vinyl dates back to his childhood. He would spend afternoons combing through his parents classic rock records and wanting more. He collected baseball cards and comics and soon that obsession with owning pieces of pop culture history

Patrons packed in the record store to hear the band play and celebrate five years in business. The End of All Music opened their doors on March 1 of 2012 and have grown every year since. bled over into his love of vinyl. But in Swider’s hometown of Greenwood, in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, there weren’t very many places immediately available for him to purchase more records.

He fed his habit by carefully picking apart yard and estate sales, he perused antique stores and thrift shops, looking for stay vinyls people were selling or had tossed aside to clear up space. He loved it. He loved everything about records.

The sheer physicality of them, the fact that they were tangible manifestations of music, the cover art that came with them – everything, Swider just really loved old school records.

“With any online medium for music, whether that be streaming or mp3s or whatever, I’m not convinced that you totally ever own it,” he said. “If you want to own music, I think vinyl’s the best, because, as far as packaging goes, you’re getting the best version of that

product that they’ve ever come up with. You get a 12inch record, a sleeve, beautiful artwork and it’s this nice, physical object that looks way more interesting than a CD or cassette or a reel-to-reel tape or definitely an mp3. I’m a collector. I like to own stuff.”

To celebrate the fifth anniversary, alternative indie beach rock group Casey Golden performed in the store.The group is based out of Tucson, Arizona and are making their way across the

Southeast, touring to promote their new album. Their self-titled record was put out

by Muscle Beach Records, a label based right here in Oxford. This was the label’s first album they’ve put out on vinyl. It’s set to be released on March 10, but those at the party could purchase and take home a copy early.

There was a big round cooler filled with ice and Busch Light set up by the front door, in front of the sales counter. Those of age could walk in, grab a beer

and gather around the band that was set up right there in the store. When The End of All Music opened their doors in 2012, they welcomed the community with a live performance. Swider thought doing the same for the fifth anniversary was a fun way to honor that opening day, as well as celebrate the entire reason the he opened the store: the love of music.

“I think it worked,” Swider said, the day after the anniversary party. “I was nice and we had a really good crowd. We sold some records. I’ve always said that after five years, we’d reevaluate staying open and if it was worth it, and, with a resounding ‘yes,’ it has been worth it. We’ve been successful. We’ve grown every year. We’re still seeing growth, we’re still seeing new customers. So yeah, it’s been well worth it. LMR holding Humanities Affair tonight

Today, Sunday, March 5, at The Lyric, the University of Mississippi’s Music Department will be holding their second annual hUManities Affair to benefit the department’s Living Music Resource.

Associate Professor Nancy María Balach founded the Living Music Resource, colloquially referred to as the LMR, in 2013 as a way to help stir up interest in living composers. During their active season, the LMR holds regular live shows that they broadcast on the web. The international viewing audience can watch as guests perform participate in interviews and just have a good time. These sessions are hosed in the theater located in the Powerhouse.

While vising Oxford, the artists are guests of the Music Department and engage with students. They hold master classes or intimate Q&A sessions that the LMR calls Shoulder to Shoulder. It’s during the LMR Live sessions that are digitally broadcasted around the world when the broader Oxford community becomes involved in the LMR’s work. They’ve had students from Oxford High School participate in the show as well as members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Anyone is also welcome to sit in on the broadcasts and be a part of the live studio audience.

“These shows aren't just for students; they’re meant for students and the community and our viewers,” Balach said.

“Those viewers have included other institutions of higher learning, as well as people who are just interested in the arts and live in other cities. We’re really trying to make Oxford a portal for this style of interactive musical learning experience.”

The fundraiser being held this evening will take place at The Lyric. Festivities kick off at 4:30 with hors d’oeuvres. Then at

5:30, the concert begins.

Headlining the concert are Mary Donnelly and Mary Lane Haskell, performing with the accompaniment of the Mississippians Jazz Ensemble. Special guest performers for the evening include Guy

Hovis and Balach. The concert is titled “Standard Time” and celethe Great brates American Songbook.

“A very cool part of this is that when Mary Donnelly was a student here, she got her start singing with the jazz ensemble as

a student,” Balach said.

“It was when she was collaborating with that group that she really learned the repertoire. So, it’s really neat to have her back and see her working with them again. And they all sound fantastic.

We had a rehearsal on

Monday, and to see them working with Mary Donnelly and then hearing Mary Lane, who just has so much going on with her career right now. It’s all just so neat.”

Balach is working to grow the LMR to include more involvement and

interest from the community. They want a broader audience and they want more people involved so that everyone realizes that the humanities are meant for everyone.

“We’re trying pull in various types of audiences and people because humanities, I think, needs to be a broad umbrella,” Balach said. “If we stopped thinking of it like only this is art, only this is theatre, only this is music, I think we would realize that we’re really all just after this human cultural experience.”

Balach said that she truly does believe in the old adage of music being the universal language.

She talked about how important it was for the academic and artistic community not to make themselves entirely separate from the community that supports them.

“I think it’s important that we involve the community in things like this for many reasons,” she said. “For one, it’s always great to have the opportunity to widen the bridge between the university and the broader community. I also think that in any area that you’re studying or researching or trying to become an expert in, you can become a little isolated. I think that even happens in the preforming arts. I believe that, as performers, we need to do a better job of welcoming and inviting the public and by educating folks about what our message is, everyone will enjoy it better. I don’t want anyone to feel like an outsider, and this fundraiser is an opportunity for us to build this relationship, build this understanding and welcoming folks in. We’re a community together.”

Lewis to appear on Thacker Mountain Radio with debut novel

Phillip Lewis will be the featured guest on this week’s Thacker Mountain Radio Hour with his debut novel, “The Barrowfields.”

Lewis has been writing for many years now. He used to run little literary blogs where he would post short stories. He grew up in a household that really valued the written word, and this love of literature was ingrained in him from an early age.

“My father has always been a writer, my younger sister is a writer–I’ve just always been around it,” Lewis said. “If you came to my house on Christmas or Thanksgiving and sit down at the table, all you would ever hear anybody talk about is ‘What are you reading? What books did you bring with you?

Can I borrow that when you’re finished with it?’ and that sorta stuff. It’s part of our family and what we do.”

It wasn’t until about five years ago when Lewis delved into his novel full force. To say the least, it was a challenge to balance his life legal career and this new venture. He was concerned about his father’s failing health. He had just gotten married and he and his wife welcomed two baby boys, one now 3 and the other just a year old. Life happens fast. It was hard to find the time to sit down and churn out page after page of copy, but he found a way.

Lewis grew up in a small town in the mountains of North Carolina.

The town was sparsely populated, elevated at 4,000 feet, rainy and cold and generally isolating.

This was hard for him at times. It became even more complicated when he became a teenaged father, and his existence in the small town became completely defined by him being the 16-year-old who got his girlfriend pregnant. His grades didn’t matter anymore and no one really cared about his basketball skills. This one thing now defined

“It’s hard having kids now, and I’m 45,” Lewis said. “At 16, you don’t know what the hell you’re doing. I remember taking Ashley, my daughter’s name is Ashley, to McDonald’s, our one restaurant right there, and everybody would stare at us. It was tough. I remember being in English class and reading “The Scarlet Letter” before anyone knew my girlfriend was pregnant, and my face was just burning. I’ve always just felt this bleak, oppressive quality to everything about the place, the whole area.”

It was this sense of isolationism that drives the narrative of “The Barrowfields.” The story is set in the fictional Appalachian town of Old Buckram.

This is the birthplace of Henry Aster, a young man who loves to read, but grows up in a house where the Bible was the only book kept within its four walls. He feels more than a little out of place, and this puts a strain on his relationship with his parents.

Henry moves off for college and begins a career as a writer. Years go by, and his mother falls ill.

Henry and his new, pregnant wife are forced to return to Old Buckram.

They live in a giant, gothic house of iron and glass on the side of mountain with a library filled with countless books. Henry’s son, Henry Jr., and the boy’s little sister watch as their dad’s love of literature turns into an obsession that threatens to tip the whole family over the edge.

“The Barrowfields” is a novel that explores the dark possibilities always lurking within devotion and is set in one of the poorest and most beautiful areas of the world.

Lewis’ tale takes readers across decades as he looks at what makes us who we are and what we can’t help but become.

University Offsets Electricity Use with Renewable Energy Certificates UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

The University of Mississippi has offset a portion of the electricity it uses through the purchase of renewable energy certificates.

The purchase, which came about as a recommendation of the UM Energy Committee, allows the university to lower its carbon footprint, support the development of renewable energy technologies and practice resource stewardship, a tenet of the UM Creed.

"RECs are a simple and efficient way to immediately integrate renewables into an energy portfolio," said Larry Sparks, vice chancellor for administration and finance. "This is an important next step for UM that complements our long history of increasing energy efficiencies, lowering energy utilization rates and investing in renewable energy installations on campus."

One renewable energy certificate, or REC, represents the environmental benefits associated with one megawatt-hour of energy generated from renewable energy resources.

The university purchased 3,835 RECs for $1,800, which is 0.02 percent of the overall electric-

"As well as making a contribution to a cleaner world, we feel this is an educational opportunity to show that there are alternative ways of producing power."

READING ACROSS AMERICA

It is estimated that the university's RECs have an environmental impact similar to growing 69,848 trees per year for 10 years or not using 6,240 barrels of oil, according to 3Degrees Inc., the company through which Ole Miss purchased the certificates.

When electricity is pro-

duced from a renewable generator, such as a wind turbine, two products are created: the energy, which is delivered to the grid and mixes with other forms of energy, and the REC. Because renewable energy delivered to the grid cannot be distinguished from electrons of nonrenewable re-

sources, the REC is a way to track the renewable electricity – it acts like a receipt for owning the environmental benefits associated with the generation of renewable energy.

"It is not practical to set up a wind or solar farm, just as we wouldn't build a traditional power station to provide the university's electricity," Banner said.

"Rather, we purchase electricity from the producer, usually the local power supplier.

"By purchasing RECs, we are able to certify and verify that a percentage of our electricity is tracked back to its source. In our case, the source is a provider that produces electricity using wind turbines that do not create greenhouse gas emissions such as CO2."

RECs allow individuals and businesses to support renewable energy development and help to make renewable energy projects financially viable while lowering carbon footprints.

Besides the REC purchase, the Ole Miss campus is home to renewable energy installations that include more than 400 solar panels on the Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence and geothermal heating and cooling at Insight Park.

Oxford runs the gamut on artistic endeavors for the state. Writers, painters and musicians all have a place in the small northern Mississippi town. Hayden Brewer, the front man of the Blue Magnolia Band, is a classics major at the University of Mississippi who understands the implications of music and art native to this state.

Brewer, 20, says Mississippi music, especially the blues, is undergoing constant evolution, and he sees the Blue Magnolia Band as a vehicle to bring that musical heritage into the future.

The Blue Magnolia Band has been playing together for three years. It is comprised of Hayden Brewer as lead vocalist, Brandon Bourgeois as drummer, Jacob Moore as bass guitarist, and Jerry Cruse and Caleb Gruys on lead guitar. Band members attend several different colleges across the state, including Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi.

The group has a wide variety of influences, stemming from blues, classical, country, and psychedelic rock music.

“We liken ourselves to the Black Keys, the North Mississippi All Stars, and Sturgill Simpson because we try to use our roots in an interesting way,” said Brewer. “Mostly, we play

covers, a lot classic rock, blues, but we play country, and we like to get people dancing. However, we’re also collaborating on original music, which we don’t always play at our shows, but we incorporate stylistically and musically into the covers we do. Sometimes we’ll add verses or mash up songs.”

Blue Magnolia Band is booked until June in venues across the Mississippi Gulf Coast in towns like Biloxi, Gulfport, Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs.

The band is organizing shows in and around Oxford, Jackson, New Orleans and Memphis.

“As we book further into the year, that’s when we’ll be playing with more frequency in the areas like Memphis, Oxford and Jackson, because those are our travel periods,” said Brewer. “So if we have to travel to practice and play, we generally try to make use of the geography.”

Brewer is especially appreciative of the arts scene in Oxford, which he believes has introduced him to a greater variety of music.

“Oxford has an enormous artistic influence on basically anyone that lives here,” said Brewer. “Oxford has a strong tradition of writers, and also a strong tradition of music. A lot of that music has been underground.

“There’s a great blues tradition in Oxford, and a lot of the bands that come through Oxford, in the col-

legiate aspect, have that same feeling to them.”

Brewer’s favorite venues to frequent around Oxford include Rooster’s Blues House, Proud Larry’s and the Lyric. He also enjoys area house shows.

“There’s a lot of great music that goes on in house shows around the city of Oxford,” said Brewer. “If you know where to look, you can hear some really great sounds.”

With Hayden Brewer, you don’t just find a musician. Brewer also acts as the band’s manager, publisher, and social media analyst. In today’s age, an entrepreneurial spirit is vital for success in any industry.

“I’ve always had a knack for managing bands,” Brewer said. “Some of my greatest talents are in the PR and social media marketing field. I have a passion and a great amount of knowledge about music, (and) I think those skills are useful and hopefully marketable.”

Pace Ward, the guitarist for the local band Woolgathering, sees a band on the rise in Blue Magnolia.

“I’ve known Hayden for about three years now,” said Pace. “His band has been playing more and more shows on the coast, and we’ve been trying to get something together up here.”

Ward is a big proponent of the same house shows Brewer and his bandmates frequent.

Medieval FROM 1

Where did people get groceries or medical care or an education?

As a part of this curriculum unit, students read the chivalric romance from the late 14th century “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” and Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales.” At the fair, they had sections set up that represented Canterbury and Southwark, both real places that still exist in England and played a significant role in Chaucer’s stories.

Students in standard senior English were the ones putting on the fair, but anyone in the school is welcome to come out and see what it’s all about. Some students from Della Davidson Elementary School even came to the fair to see what it was all about.

“I like that the kids get to share what they found interesting from their research,” said Kim Austin, one of the senior English teachers overseeing the Medieval Faire, during the event Thursday morning. “The kids from Della will be coming soon, so some of the projects were geared toward younger students. And everyone loves getting a chance to taste authentic foods, so we have some students who’ve prepared food too. It’s just a lot of fun.”

Tents and tables were set up for the event to represent a castle, The Tabard Inn, the Canterbury Cathedral, a haberdashery, a marketplace and so much more. The kids got to pick a topic of medieval life they’d like to further explore. From there they did a research project, delving deep into that one subject area. There was a student who studied the role of cheeses in medieval times as well as kids looking at the role of music, the role of nuns, farm life – pretty much anything they could come up with.

Some of the kids were able to pick jobs or societal roles that kind of correlated to their own career aspirations. Two students were set up as barbers at the event. One wanted to be a hair stylist and the other wanted to be a dentist. Barbers were once the town surgeons, after all, so they would have likely worked in the same place back in those days.

Jonathan Webb, a student at OHS, had a table set up set up to discuss the significance of honey in medieval life. Dressed in full beekeeper garb, Webb explained that honey didn’t come cheap back then. For the people who could afford it, it really improved their lives. Honey was, and still is, used in facial treatments. People used it for it’s antibacterial properties to treat rashes and for its ability to prevent infections. It was a highly valued commodity.

Allison Movitz is the other senior English teacher overseeing the fair. She said that she looks forward to the event ever year, not only because it’s fun to get out of the classroom and dress up, but also because of the opportunity it gives the students.

Movitz said that she believes anytime students can demonstrate what they learned out in the real, or pretend, world, rather than just writing about it on paper, everybody wins. Longo Implementing New Offensive System

hil Longo has but two requirements for his Ole Miss offense.

Go fast.

Keep it simple.

The Rebels have done just that through two practices so far this spring, even if the Rebels are spinning some as they familiarize themselves with new concepts, philosophies and styles. Longo is installing his 25-play version of the Air Raid – an offense popularized by Mike Leach, who is now the head coach at Washington State. He said he’s hoping for full implementation by the team’s fourth practice.

“I feel good about the way the guys are picking things up,” he said. “They’re scrambling a little bit and will the next two days, but that’s to be expected. The fifth day, things will begin to clear up more.

“Right now, for having a new staff and a new offense with guys who did something different terminology-wise a year ago, I like where we are. We have new terminology, new formations and new plays and everything is a little Greek to them, but they did a good job of getting ready. We knew the force-feeding and quick install would be difficult, but day four we’ll come out of the tunnel a little and into the light.”

Longo’s offenses at Sam Houston State the last three years combined for 22,243 yards and smashed FCS records in the process. Sam Houston State concluded the 2016 season ranked No. 1 in total offense and No. 2 in scoring offense and passing offense, and the Bearkats set a Southland Conference season record in 2015 with 7,975 yards of offense, which also ranked third all-time in FCS history.

“I've been running this same system for 20 years,” Longo said, “and we’re (Ole Miss) on pace with everywhere else I’ve been. So, as I said, I feel good where we are right now.”

Despite running a pass-heavy offense, Sam Houston State led the Southland Conference in rushing and ranked among the Top 25 FCS teams nationally in rushing in 2014. Ole Miss, by comparison, finished 97th in FBS for rushing offense in 2016.

Steady Leader Zalina Khairudinova has stepped up for OM Rebels

There is a different feel to the Ole Miss women’s tennis team, according to senior Zalina Khairudinova. The No. 17 Rebels may be young across the board — Khairudinova is the only senior for the record — but there is something special about this group.

“We’ve always been close but I would say we all get together very well.

We’re a little bit closer than last year,” she said as the Rebels headed into the start of SEC play. “There has been a lot of energy. I feel like we have much better energy this year.”

Whatever the Rebels

have, it has worked in their favor. Heading into their home SEC opener against Alabama, Ole Miss was 9-2 as a team. That included wins over Virginia and LSU, Hawaii, UCIrvine, Yale and Memphis.

“We’re a good team. We can host. I know we are capable of winning against any team in the SEC. It’s about sticking together and fighting for every point,” Khairudinova said. “We started the season off well. We went to ITA Kickoff which was in Virginia and beat two really good teams. I thought the girls did a really good job of sticking together and brought of lot of energy. There was a lot of competition going on. It

was a good experience.”

This is the final season for Khairudinova, who was 11-6 heading into the weekend in singles play and 10-3 in doubles partnered up Tea Jandric.

“This is my final season and I want to make sure that it’s a memorable one,” she said.

As a senior, there is extra expected of Khairudinova from a leadership standpoint. She and head coach Mark Beyers had a talk before the season about stepping up.

“He told me I’m the only senior, I’m the captain and that everyone is going to look up to me and that I had to teach them stuff,” she added. “I thought it was a good opportunity.

Not only to be a captain and a good leader but it was also a good opportunity for me to guide a team and learn things for myself. It’s not very easy to be a captain. You always have to be an example for everyone.”

So far the example that Khairudinova has set has been a positive one. She is pleased with her role and how things have gone with the team.

“I have always given 100 percent but right now I feel like I can’t even think about giving less than 100 percent because of all the people on the team and how they look up to me,” she said. “They basically follow my steps and if I do something wrong, I don’t

feel like it’s right. I’m a leader and I need to make sure I set the right example and it’s tough to be that example.”

The results on the court have also pleased Khairudinova, who had won two straight singles matches heading into the start of SEC play. She is a different player on the court, especially when it comes to the mental side of things.

“I feel like I’m stronger there. Since I’m a senior, even if it’s not going the way I want it to go or losing, I’m going to battle all the way down to the last point,” Khairudinova said adding that her shots are better because she is better mentally. “I feel like

since I’ve had a couple of wins, I’ve gotten my confidence back and I feel like my forehand has improved. Sometimes it’s not about the way you swing, it’s all about the things in your head.”

The Rebels are hosting Auburn at 1 today at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. Khairudinova was excited about getting to play in Oxford.

“It’s always fun to play at home because a lot of fans come to watch you,” she said. “It’s nice to be home.

At the same time, you get a little bit nervous because you want to win at home.

So, you feel a little bit of pressure but at the same time, you feel a lot of support.”

OHS Chargers looking to win another track title in 5A

Oxford's quest to win a final MHSAA track championship in Class 5A started in the winter with indoor workouts. Now that the weather has started to warm, and the days are set to get longer, the Chargers will build up their talents for a run for the annual state meet in May. The Chargers clobbered the competition in 2016, garnering 156 points compared to the 90.5 that Canton had in second place.

Last year's team had speed, power and depth. This year's team will have some of all that, but it will be younger in some areas. It's the job of coach Chris Bush, who was in the middle of preparing for the Oxford Citizen Relays, to mold it all together.

And to rely on seniors like Jonathan Tyler and talented speedster Jaquan Webb to help gobble up points in various meets.

Coach Chris Bush said the indoor competitions was successful even if it wasn't as productive as the 2016 season. The 4x200 meter relay recorded a time that ranked them eighth in the country and earned them a spot in the national indoor meet in New York. The 4x400 team, with only one returning runner off last year's great team, also made the national meet.

“That's a big credit to the guys for the work they put in,” Bush said before talking about his squad for 2017.

Wilkins, along with his fellow running backs, which include Eugene Brazley and Eric Swinney, have shown glimpses of promise in their limited practice time.

“We're positive and working and that's all you can ask for from a group of guys,” Tyler said. “Some of the guys that were big for us in cross country, we're counting on them to be big for us during the track season.”

“This team is young, but we have a lot of potential. We've had some setbacks this year.

Some of our A listers are not with us in Kenard Harris, Devin Rockette and CJ Gable. To have some guys developing, and still running some good times, without those three guys who were a big part of our team, that speaks highly to the new guys.”

Webb is off a phenomenal start so far as a junior.

Jacquanzi Johnson is coming into his own, while other football players like Barry Flowers are starting to develop for Bush. Johnson will run on three of the relay teams for the Chargers, as well as run the 100. Webb will compete in the 100, 200, 400 and the 4x100.

“He is the one we have to

count on this year, especially with the absence of those other three. He's a big one we have to count,” Bush said of Webb. “He's gotten off to a little slow start this year because of the turf toe he had from football. We're having to watch that but overall, we've had great workouts heading into outdoor.”

In field events, Bush has added Quentin Wilfawn to

“We have some guys that can make a little noise for us in the outdoor events,” Bush said. “In the jumps, we have Tyrese Ivy and KJ Gipson.

“Right now, it's a little chicken with your head cut off whereas that's going start to fade and there will be more poise in our tempo,” Longo said. “Right now we're

trying to run around, get please coaches, things done and think fast. As the confidence builds and we start to click, the sense of urgency will start to increase and I think the lack of knowing what we're doing will decrease.

Then they'll feel the confidence.

“The first two days also is probably the heaviest two days. I equate it to when you get to class at 8 in the morning. You’re most attentive in the beginning. By the time 8:45 a.m., you're looking to get out, so what we do is, following that philosophy, give it all to them when they're attentive.”

Oxford makes more plays to finally trump Wayne Co.

JACKSON - Good things always seem to come in threes.

On the third day of the third month of the year with Oxford's third crack at the Wayne County War Eagles in the MHSAA 5A quarterfinal round, and despite Jarkel Joiner not making a single threepointer, the Chargers came out on top 58-48.

Although all things seem to be lining up with the number three, Oxford coach Drew Tyler and his players are not superstitious.

"I don't believe in luck because you put yourself in a position to win the lottery," Tyler said when asked if it was the third time being the charm against the War Eagles.

"You bought a ticket, so you put yourself in that position. We don't believe in luck or superstitions."

Much like Oxford does during division play during the season, Tyler thought that it did help that they played Wayne County (18-13 overall) the past two seasons in order to counter their style of play for this meeting.

"We played other teams three times," Tyler said. "I think it does help knowing the style of play. Wayne County is known to jump trap (on defense) and bring a second guy at the ball late in the game. They are really aggressive with it. For the most part, we

The War Eagles went 1for-10 in the final quarter and had four turnovers which led directly to six Charger points. Oxford secured the rebound on all but one field goal miss Wayne County had. The Chargers outrebounded the War Eagles in the contest 42-24.

Much like the previous two meetings between the schools, it was another low scoring grind it out affair, but it was the ingame adjustments Oxford made that turned things in their favor.

"Wayne County, they can get in you," Tyler said about the 20 Turnovers the War Eagles forced on the Chargers. "(Wayne County) Coach (Kendrick) Davis does a great job.

They are a well coached and disciplined team. It was a slow-down game they won in the game that put them in the elite eight.

They showed the disci-

pline to pretty much win a game that came to a halt.

We knew what we were dealing with. We knew what we've seen as far as the style of play the last two years. Out of our different defenses, we do like to push it. Wayne County, they do a good job of disrupting the opponent's offense and they did that early. We were able to get Jarkel freed up with some picks and we kinda grinded it out."

Scoring was at a premium and it was close throughout the game with the lead not being bigger than six points until the last 70 seconds of the contest.

Wayne County led 9-8 after the first quarter, but Oxford led 21-20 at halftime. The Chargers made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to help salt the game away.

Lafayette (28-3 overall) jumped out to a quick 124 lead in the first five minutes of the contest.

McComb (29-3) recovered nicely to end the quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 14-11. The lead went back and forth between the two teams throughout the second quarter and the Lady Tigers ended up with a one point lead by halftime at 23-22.

Shaniyah Buford was held to just three points at the break and was 0-for-8 from three.

After McComb scored the first four points of the second half, Lafayette took over the contest going on a 16-0 run keeping the Lady Tigers off the scoreboard for nearly eight minutes in the second half.

"We made offensive plays and defensive plays when we needed to in the second half," Linzy said.

Ripley and Byhalia are in Division 2-4A with Lafayette and will face each other in the other 4A semifinal game. Linzy notes just how tough Division 2-4A was this season and the other division teams making it this far just proves it.

"It's a hard division," Linzy said. "I'm excited for Ripley and Byhalia. I'm always a league type of guy. I root for every SEC team when they are playing somebody else. It's the

same thing here. We've coached against those teams and played against them. We want to see them do well and represent our division. Let everybody know how hard our division was during the year. I think everybody can see that."
