Reality Fair LHS teaches freshman about life after school BY CHANING GREEN NEWS WRITER
Friday morning, Lafayette High School freshman got a chance to see what it was like to live on a budget during the school’s annual Reality Fair. The Reality Fair has been going on for nearly a decade at Lafayette and is used as a way to teach kids what life is like after high school or college. Students are given a number that represents their monthly income. This number is determined by their grade point average during their first half of the school year. The higher the grades, the more money a student receives to spend at the Reality Fair. Students take their monthly earnings and have to build a life.
After picking up their mock paycheck, students swing by a booth that lets them pick out a cell phone and a plan. Representatives from CSpire are there to walk them through the different plans they offer and how much a phone costs. After they decide on a plan, they have to deduct it from their budget. The next booth is one from Remax and students have to figure out where they’re going to live. They can even split the rent if they can find a unit with multiple bedrooms. Students then move to a booth set up by Northeast Power where they have to learn how to pay utilities. Representatives from State Farm were there to advise them on how to purchase insurance policies. They then moved to medical insurance, grocery bills, and more. The students also have to
spin a wheel that has the potential to damage their earnings or perhaps increase them. They could land on a space that tells them they have to pay $100 to have their car fixed or so much money for a co-pay for a doctor’s visit based on which insurance plan they chose at the previous booth. They could also land on a space that said their aunt sent them a birthday card that month with $50 in it. The wheel is a part of the Reality Fair to show students they never really know what’s going to happen and why it’s important save. Unforeseen expenses do happen. The last stop for the students are several booths with representatives of different banks in town. The kids are shown exactly TURN TO REALITY PAGE 6
