Rick Mize looks at 50th CMA awards with fond memories

Country music used to be how local radio personality Rick Mize earned his paycheck. Mize may be the current general manager of Supertalk Mississippi's 93.7 and Q 105.1 FM stations, but for almost two decades, he pressed palms with the legends of country music like Charlie Daniels, Hank Williams Jr. and George Strait.

Mize is a lifetime member of the Country Music Association, which means last night's award show, broadcast live on ABC from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, was an event Mize had his eye on. Besides having an opportunity to vote for artists involved in the ceremony, Mize had a special place in his heart for the 50th anniversary show.

awards Mize captured during the 11 years he was in Biloxi. In 1989, he won the CMA Program Director of the Year, an award that isn't even around any longer.

Once you won in your market size, Mize was unable to capture another unless he went to a larger market.

Mize said the Country Music Association is a unique one to him because it's one of the only ones that promotes a genre of music, and not just in radio, but in all facets.

“It was formed all those many years ago and they do a super job of promoting the industry,” Mize said recalling how he first got involved with the awards from the CMA. “We were trying to win station of the year, that was really our goal. I had been nominated the year before in 1990 with a different

morning partner and then the next year with Gwen Wilson, we were able to get it.”

As far as Mize knows, he is the only Mississippi native to win a broadcast award.

“Obviously we have had a lot of artists win awards over the years,” Mize added. “I would say country music was my favorite overall, but I do like all genres of music.

Today you could get in my car and in my CD player, I might have the greatest hits of Charlie Daniels and then the next CD might be the soundtrack to Singing in the Rain. I try to be fairly diverse in my tastes.”

When Mize, who grew up locally and graduated from Lafayette High School, moved back to the area, there were some who speculated that he would change the format of WQLJ, 93.7 FM, the station he co-

owned with David Kellum and Jack Gadd.

“You don't go fishing with things you like to eat,” Mize said. “You realize that you have to meet that market's needs and this market is a college town and country wouldn't be the preferred format. Not to mention that we're already inundated by stations around the area anyway.”

Mize has been playing hot adult contemporary music since being back in Oxford.

That still doesn't mean he doesn't at least try to listen or keep up with country.

Mize said that Chris Stapleton, who was up for Performer of the Year, was the “first breath of fresh air” in country for Mize.

“People have to realize that country music started with the urbanization of the country and people going back to the factories and you ended up having people work in places like Memphis and Birmingham or even up in Philadelphia and they had grown up in the country,” Mize said. “They were homesick for it and country music met that need. So it became a huge format because all of these major metropolitan areas had these people that loved it. Things have changed and people aren't like that anymore, which means country music has changed. People say it has more of pop, 70s feel to it and there is some truth to it.

‘People person’ Brent Larson has enjoyed his run for Lafayette's school board

For the past 26 years, Brent Larson has been seeing people, several thousand people during a week, come in and out of his Cash Saver grocery store. Larson is used to engaging with them, and finding out what they like to buy, or what he can do to better serve them on a daily basis.

Running for political office has been much of the same for Larson, who is seeking his first term on the Lafayette County School Board in District 1. Larson has two sons, Will, 16, and Sam, 14, who are students in the district at the high school and middle schools, respectively. He is the current vice president of the high school baseball bullpen club while he and his wife Christy try to be involved at all of the schools, and with all different aspects of the district.

“I've loved it,” Larson said about the campaign. “I'm a people person to begin with. Going door to door and seeing people has been wonderful to me. Everyone has been great, just wished me good luck.”

A call to run for the board for Larson revolves around the children that attend all the schools.

He talked specifically about the class of 2029, the students that just entered kindergarten and will leave high school a little more than 12 years from now.

“I care in my heart for the kids in the district. I don't have a personal agenda at all,” Larson said.

“I want to see the district excel. We need new buildings for the school, and I want to see us go forward with that and not backwards. I see a lot of things that the school district has done well and I want to

Larson, who is a life-long resident of Lafayette County, graduated with a general business degree from the University of Mississippi in 1990. With his extensive background of studying at Ole Miss, and the almost three decades of hands-on work experience gained in the grocery business, Larson feels like he can really help the district.

“I think that enables me to forward the district in many ways. I think I can help them meet the needs of the future for the kids because there are so many things going on there with the population and the district growing,” Larson said. “We have to look to the future and not look back. I'm

thinking about the year 2029 right now because that's this year's kindergarten class. That's when they're graduating and that's on my mind now and how we can meet their needs and better their future.

“I have a vested interest with my two, but I have a soft heart for kids, K through 12. I want to see them do well. I employ a lot of kids here, not only Oxford kids but Lafayette, too. I want to see them excel in all aspects of the school.”

Each day is a busy one for Larson at the store, and almost all of it involves crunching numbers of some kind. The cash registers run every minute of the day, and money is always changing hands.

Larson is constantly involved with

both aspects. The county school district operates on a budget of $26 million, which makes it a big business like Larson is used to dealing with.

“You have to keep up with margins and if your margins aren't right, then the money changing hands isn't right so we have to keep up with that,” Larson said talking about the store. “That's a day in, day out, hour by hour type of thing.”

Lafayette's schools have been consistently rated as a “B” district from an academic achievement standpoint. Larson talked about keeping the momentum going, and then tapping into things that haven't been done before.

“If elected, I want to get out

there and help that momentum and be hands on. I'm a very hands on person and I want to help them continue that,” Larson said adding the district feels like coming home to him and his family. “It's like no other. It's a wonderful deal. Our kids love, we love it. Everybody is together. It's a family atmosphere, and that's what we like out there.

That's what we had going through school and you don't have that everywhere.”

Preserving that family feel on campus is the goal for Larson. He would also like to improve it, even with the district growing.

“It's tough to keep the continuity but I think the dynamics of Lafayette are always going to be able to stay there,” Larson said.

“Lafayette is a unique place.”

Campaigning for the job has made a positive impact on Larson.

He feels more well rounded now, getting to know people he didn't previously know well before.

“I think it's made me a better person overall. I've knocked on a lot of doors and when you haven't done that, you just don't know what you haven't seen,” Larson said. “When you go and meet those new people, it's just wonderful. When you get invited into living rooms and sit down and have coffee and talk for 30 minutes, I love that. It's like no other.

I'm that type of person and it's why I love this business. To be able to go out and see some of the same people at their homes, that's been rewarding. And to ask them for their vote has been even more rewarding.”

The election for the District 1 seat will be held Tuesday.

One of the busiest people in Oxford ahead of the upcoming presidential election is Lafayette County Circuit Clerk Baretta Mosley. The Oxford native is in her fifth year of serving in the position and has been with the circuit clerk’s office for nearly three decades. She is the First Vice President of the Mississippi Circuit Clerk Association and in July of 2019, she will be named the president, becoming the first circuit clerk from Lafayette County to do so in the in the 80-year history of the association. For the past several weeks, Mosley’s office has been working to make sure everyone is registered, absentee ballots are in order and voting machines are fully operational in time for this year’s election. The Circuit Clerk took time out of her day Monday afternoon to sit down with Oxford Citizen reporter Chaning Green and discuss her job and her history in the position.

CHANING GREEN: How long have you worked for the Circuit Clerk’s Office?

BARETTA MOSLEY: I was here 24 years before I ran for office, and I’m currently in my second term in the position. So nearly 29 years total. Before I ran for circuit clerk, I was deputy circuit clerk.

GREEN: Why are you still here?

What do you like about working here?

MOSLEY: There’s always something interesting. Court is very interesting, as are the people. We cross paths with a lot of different people here from everywhere. Because of the university, we get exposed to a lot of different cultures and it’s always interesting to converse and ask 'Where are you from, and how did you find Oxford?' Being a people person, I enjoy meeting people. This job is hectic sometimes, like during elections season, but you can’t help but love the people here.

GREEN: How did you first come to work for the county?

MOSLEY: Well, my friend Mary Alice Busby was the previous circuit clerk, and we both worked at First National Bank. We were bankers. She decided she wanted to work in the public sector and run for office. When she did, I thought it was a good idea, and I helped her campaign. When she won, back in 1987 and took office in January of 1988, she said 'Do you wanna walk across the street with me?' It was something different, something interesting, and we didn’t have a clue what we

I’d been a banker for 10 years and she’d been a banker for 24, so we were both looking for something different, and boy did we find it.

Mary Alice brought me on as Deputy Circuit Clerk. I was one of her first hires when she took office.

It was before we got computers, so there were no computers. There was one typewriter and one adding machine. It was so different from banking, but we could still use our banking skills because a lot of money does come through this office. We reconcile all this money monthly and balance everything to a tee, and that’s the banker in us here. I reconcile bank statements as soon as they come in, make sure all the money is where it should be and is then distributed how it should be. So our banking skills did come in handy there. The court side was definitely interesting. We didn’t realize how much happened in Lafayette County, didn’t know all this was going on.

GREEN: What exactly does the Circuit Clerk do? What all does your office oversee?

MOSLEY: Well, unless you’re working here, it’s kind of difficult to grasp everything that we do.

We’re very busy with elections right now. We’re doing absentee ballots today, which is why everyone is lined up out front right now.

We are a state court. Ninety-nine percent of our cases are out of grand jury when they come to us, and they are felonies. We have civil cases which can range anywhere from debt collection to medical malpractice, contract disputes.

We’re also a court of appeals. We do marriage licenses, and we do a

lot of accounting for not only the main court system, but also Drug Court.

Drug Court meets every Thursday and serves seven counties. We take payments for all seven counties. They’re entering their 10th year, and we’ve always done their accounting for them. They’ve really grown into something big.

They are actually hoping to start a second one in the northern part of our judicial district. We would be assisting them in collecting those payments as well. We are very busy here.

GREEN: Describe what your last couple weeks have been like.

MOSLEY: Ha, we’ve been running around like chickens with our heads chopped off. We have a lot of people who want to vote via absentee because they work during polling hours, will be on vacation, are senior citizens or a variety of other reasons. Right now, last I checked, we’ve had well over a thousand and they’re steadily coming. It’ll be like this for the rest of the week. During this time, we’ll also be testing our voting machines. I’ve already programmed the cards that will go in the machines, the all have to be tested now. Testing is open to the public and will be held at the conference center on Wednesday.

GREEN: How has preparing for this election compared with others?

MOSLEY: It’s like this with every presidential election. It’s always very hectic, and it’s always a huge turn out. There’s always a large number of people who move away, forgot to register in their new place and think that they can

still vote here. If you’re not a resident of Lafayette County, you can’t vote in Lafayette County. There are laws we have to adhere to. You have to have a valid reason to absentee, and forgetting to register at your new location is not one of those. A lot of these people register in Lafayette County as students and just forget to register when they move away.

GREEN: What’s an aspect of your job that a lot of people probably wouldn’t think about?

MOSLEY: We have a lot of cases that we have to summon juries for.

Most of the time, the cases are settled before the jury has to come in, but jury trials are always interesting. It’s not like what you see on TV, someone isn’t going to break down on the witness stand and confess. A lot of these cases are so tragic. We’ve had some really, really bad cases come through here that I will take with me to my grave. They have been so sad, for both sides, the victim’s and the defendant’s. There’s no undoing what’s been done. I guess it’s the finality of it, you know?

I just have to take my hat off to all our judges because they all do just a great job of seeing both sides of the situation and having to do what is right within the law. You look out and people are crying, their families are, but again, you have to adhere to the law. The law says you have to do this and this has to be done. Applications open for Leadership Lafayette

Applications for the Chamber of Commerce’s professional development program Leadership Lafayette launched earlier this week. The program seeks to connect Lafayette County residents of all professional backgrounds so that they can work together to better understand and lift up the community.

Torie White has been chairing the program for four years.

White herself, along with every other person on the steering committee for Leadership Lafayette, graduated from the program as well. White graduated in 2009.

Leadership Lafayette is a ninemonth professional development program built around a model consisting of different sessions where participants are given a chance to network and understand more of what takes place and the challenges being faced in the community. The 25 people chosen to participate in the program are broken into groups who then work on a project dedicated to improving the quality of life in Lafayette County. That project can be a fundraiser for local nonprofits, education or ecological initiatives or anything else that contributes to the prosperity and growth of the community.

White said that selecting participants can be difficult at times because there are so many viable candidates in the community, and that number is growing every year as the program continues to expand. This year, the 2016 class of Leadership Lafayette contained slightly more than 25 participants, had the highest ever number of applicants and the program ran a

Participants of the program are selected through an application process. Every member of the steering committee must go through each application. They have a process by which they score each applicant. They look for things like community service, professional background, references, what potential impact they could have on the community and more. “Leadership qualities” is how White sums it up. On Dec. 14, members of the steering committee will meet and spend the next five or so hours going through the applications and comparing notes.

The committee will discuss and debate until they have the pool narrowed down to the desired number of applicants and they will adjourn.

White is an assistant director with the Ole Miss Alumni Association. She works with the School of Journalism, College of Liberal Arts and Black Alumni Advisory Council. She said that without the professional development, networking opportunities and relationships the program allowed her to develop, she probably wouldn’t have made it as far as she has.

“Leadership Lafayette has done a lot for me,” White said. “It has done a lot for my career. I was a probation officer for 14 years. The networking I was able to do and the people I met during this program have helped me get to where I am right now.

I’m still in contact with probably all but one or two people from my 2009 class. I worked at Visit Oxford before my current job, and my executive director there was a part of my Leadership Lafayette group. It’s great for net-

working, it’s great for service and it’s a great way for me to give back to the community.”

All participants in the program meet once a month, usually the first Thursday of the month, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sessions are themed and each give a look at a different aspect of the community and the program. There is an orientation session, a teambuilding session, local history/vision for the future session, university session, criminal justice, community development/education, business/industry session and a healthcare session.

“These sessions educate participants about Oxford, Lafayette County, the university and the needs of our community,” White said. “Participants get to meet city officials as well as take business and industry tours of places like Winchester. That’s somewhere a banker or someone in

my role would not normally have the opportunity to see.

During our criminal justice session, we tour the federal building, meet federal agents, go out to the sheriff’s department’s training facility and the S.W.A.T. Team does demonstrations.

Everybody really likes that one.”

White encourages everyone who might be interested in the program to apply. She said the diversity in age and professional background of the applicants is one of the things that makes the program so interesting and allows for it to represent as much of the community as possible.

Hot Off the Press exhibit showcases UM Archives

The Department of Archives and Special Collections in the J.D. Williams Library is constantly working to obtain new materials for their already extensive collections. These materials frequently come in the form of donations, but are also often purchased through auctions or other means. On the third floor of the library in the Faulkner Room, the Archives have put together a special exhibit showing some of the department’s most recent acquisitions.

The exhibit features different facets of history that all take place in or directly tie back to Mississippi and the rest of the South. None of the materials in the exhibit have ever been displayed for public viewing. Much of the exhibit is composed of new acquisitions, but there are also many items that the Archives have had for sometime, but for some reason or another are only just now

able to display and make available.

Around the Faulkner Room are displays set up containing materials from the Archives’ literary, historical, blues and political collections. The wide range of topics is meant to show visitors the wide variety of subjects and materials covered within the library’s archives.

In the literary case is a display dedicated to William Faulkner’s great-grandfather William Clark Falkner, or the Old Colonel, as he was commonly known as. In the display is a letter that was sent to the Old Colonel’s son after the older man had been shot on the Square in Ripley, sustaining a wound that would eventually kill him.

Falkner was no stranger to gun fights, having engaged in a two duels in his youth.

He won both and was acquitted on the grounds of self-defense each time.

It was a disgruntled business partner of the Old Colonel who, in November of 1889, gunned him down,

claiming he saw the Old Colonel reaching for a weapon. Given Falkner’s reputation, it was a plausible scenario. However, it was later revealed that Falkner didn’t even have a gun on his person at the time of the incident. The former business partner was tried and acquitted of the charge.

The papers in the collection regarding the Old Colonel came from the family of Thomas Spite a friend of the Old Colonels. Spite also served as the district attorney. In the collection is a letter Spite wrote to his wife where he shared his fears that Falkner’s killer would ultimately be acquitted.

In the historical display are items tied to Native American history in the area, including documents relating to a land dispute between a native of what is now Oxford and a white settler. There is a ledger that was kept by Jacob Thompson that has details regarding the number of slaves he maintained on his planta-

tion in Oxford, as well as on other plantations he owned throughout the state.

There’s an invitation to a Whig’s barbecue in the political papers. There are papers relating to the life and death of Brigadier General Wirt Adams. Adams was a somewhat prominent figure in the Civil War. Rare marketing materials for famous performers can be seen in the blues collection part of the exhibit. The exhibit currently on display in the Faulkner Room covers so much and yet is only the smallest taste of what the Department of Archives and Special Collections contains.

Jennifer Ford is the Head of the Department of Archives and Special Collections at the university. She has several curators that work under her to oversee individual collections. She has been working with the university for the past 17 years.

“It’s hard to say,” Ford said when asked what excited

her most about the exhibit currently sitting in the Faulkner Room. “I’m naturally drawn the materials I’ve worked with the most, but there’s so much here that I’m constantly surprised when curators put out items and I get to see all these things I didn’t know about. There are so many treasures here, it would be hard for me to just pick out one or two. It’s an exciting exhibit for us.”

Ford went on to say that, as a historian, seeing the different materials from the Archives’ extensive historical collection is on of her favorite things about her job.

She said that she has a lot of favorite things about being able to work in the Archives, but, if she had to choose, her absolute favorite thing would be sharing her love for her work with the community.

“What I love the most about my job is making archival documents exciting for patrons,” Ford said. “I don’t like the stereotype of

an archive being a dark, dusty place where people are afraid to come in. We try to make these archives as accessible as possible, while still maintaining security. We want to make these documents real to people. Same thing goes for the film, the photos and the audio. We want it to speak to them.

Mississippi is an extraordinary place, and it has had some extraordinary people live here.”

We've changed the control room and given it a total makeover,” Ginn said. “We've added some equipment into our overall production efforts that have been exciting for us because it expands what we're able to do and produce the kinds of shows we're going for both the Internet and television and for the fan that's in the stadium watching it on the Jumbotron.”

With enhancements made at both the football stadium and the new basketball arena, Ginn and his mates can really do a lot.

“This fall, we had soccer and volleyball play in facilities that now have video boards. We have a video board at softball, so the internal expectation that comes with those opportunities to showcase for the fan, both stat and excitement videos and fan interaction videos, all of that is new for us,” Ginn said. “We haven't had that in the past at soccer or volleyball and we have had one at softball, but it has been significantly upgraded. Now there are three video boards inside Vaught-Hemingway and the Pavilion has the biggest, best video board in the country.

“What it has done has elevated our internal expectations. It's 'What can we do on those boards to excite the fan, to inform the fans and to create or add to the game-day experience?' We've always had the freedom from our administration to go out and make this exciting, within the rules because the NCAA and the conference does have rules about what can happen with a video board and when they can happen. Within those parameters, we've always challenged ourselves and been challenged by others to make this the best when we can make it.”

There are routine meetings held with the administration to figure out how to best use the video boards and the staff, Ginn added.

One of the most loved produc-

tions is The Season series that chronicles football, basketball and baseball, among other sports. This is the sixth year for The Season, Ginn said.

“I feel like it's our best season yet. We have finally gotten to a point from a developmental standpoint that we could start to work on the show in the spring,” Ginn said. “This year we really made a concerted effort to start compiling the interviews and the stories. It's the leg work we don't have time to always do in the fall.

We wanted to do it to be able to tell more complete stories about our student-athletes and the team as a whole because of the work we were able to get out in front of.

“I feel like from a substance standpoint that we've definitely gotten to a place we wanted to

get to as far as the detail we can put into these stories and the reality of the stories we can bring to our teams. To me, we are where we have strived to be and this is the level we want to stay at in terms of the types of profiles and features and overall TV production we're doing as it relates to The Season.”

The hours put in by the staff in relation to getting an episode ready for The Season is to put a number on for Ginn because there are so many different people working on so many different aspects of the show.

“Because there are so many people involved in The Season, to calculate it is pretty difficult,” he added. “Again, do you add in the hours spent a month out from the production or the actual hours spent during the week and then on that Saturday and Sunday and the days leading up to a Wednesday release? Then how do you count the hours that are being done right now for two weeks from now? There a lot of different people that play roles in not only the football Season, but for all the other episodes in all of the other sports as well. We're just always doing something with an eye towards the next production.”

There are eight people that work full time on the video side of

things, Ginn said. That includes all the video for the boards at the stadium or for the SEC Network or for The Season. There are also four gradate assistants that play a prominent role in all the productions, as well as some student workers who factor in.

All the profiles mean a lot to Ginn. He did like the segment completed with football coach Hugh Freeze recently where they traveled back to his hometown.

“I also love the one we did on the Luke family. I love generational stories like that where a love and a passion is passed down and shared, in this case, for three generations of Ole Miss Rebels,” Ginn said. “Those kinds of stories just make me smile ear to ear. I love that family from interacting with them, they're wonderful people. I love folks to see what we see on a daily basis. We tried to remind ourselves to not take for granted the special people that make up this football team, this football staff and all of our other coaching staffs and teams. City Board hears recommendation on parking garage

A parking garage was the talking point of the first November Oxford City Board meeting Tuesday night. Tom Sharpe, who chairs the Downtown Parking Advisory Commission, presented the most recent findings and recommendations of the commission.

The commission that Sharpe chairs has been looking at the logistics of constructing a parking garage near the Square for at least four years now. Sharpe said that the commission has been focusing on two potential locations in downtown Oxford to erect a four-story parking garage that would add 500 parking spaces to the area. The first potential location was directly behind city hall. Due to topographical issues, the commission chose to recommend the parking lot behind Oxford University Club. This area is more level and structurally sound for the proposed project’s needs and would therefore end up costing the city less in construction costs.

The projected cost of con-

structing the garage is currently at $9 million. Rather than having the garage paid for via a tax increase, the Downtown Parking Advisory Commission is looking at a system that would make it possible, over a period of years, for the garage to be paid for by parking revenue. Coinciding with this, the board voted to raise the cost of metered parking on the Square from $1 an hour to $1.25 an hour. This change is effective January 1, 2017.

Ward III Alderman Janice Antonow voted against the increase, saying that she could easily see a decrease in the number of people choosing to use metered parking if the price of that parking increases. She and Mayor Pat Patterson both proceeded to point out that the importance of free and reasonably priced parking on and around the Square, especially considering all of the employees that work downtown.

Sharpe said that there are two primary motivators behind the increase: to create a “cushion” of funds that would go toward the completion of the parking garage if the city were to move

forward with the project and the funds were needed. Sharpe said the second reason was to “more importantly, allow us some time to see how this increase will affect parking patterns.”

When Sharpe finished delivering the commission’s recommendations on the location and logistics regarding the proposed garage, Antonow delivered a series of comments and concerns about the project. The alderwoman pointed out that during busy weekends, there is barely room for people to safely walk on the Square and that most restaurants and bars are often at capacity. Where would the people occupying these 500 parking spots go when space is already so tight? Antonow then proceeded to say that with the increased prevalence of taxi and ridesharing services in the city, efforts to improve the public transportation system and make Oxford more bicyclefriendly, the parking garage would become obsolete in the near future, leaving a $9 million structure unused in a prominent location downtown. She cited research done in larger cities where similar scenarios

have played out.

Sharpe asked the board if he was permitted to respond, and, after given permission, he said that he respectfully disagrees with Antonow’s viewpoint. He said that he is not discounting taxi and ridesharing services as playing a factor in parking activity on the Square, but comparing Oxford to larger city in terms of transportation "Is not very fair because we, as a small Southern town, are in a unique position when it comes to how many cars we have on the road."

He continued by saying that if taxi services were to make a substantial impact on the town’s parking situation, that that impact would still be offset by the rate of growth the city is currently experiencing. More people will continue to move to the area and they will bring their cars. "People need a place to leave their cars. That problem is not going away," he said.

The board also heard the first reading of an ordinance change that would extend metered parking hours from 10 p.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday.

At the next regular meeting of

the City Board on Nov. 15, the board will vote on whether or not to accept the recommendations of the Downtown Parking Advisory Commission, which will allow them to take steps toward the garage’s eventual construction. The board agreed that they will leave time during this meeting to take public comments on the issue.

It's grown every year and this is one of the things we try to do to help.”

The recent meeting was well attended, with over 100 showing up. A large table held the gifts for children, while money was placed in a donation box up front for those that wished to help that way. Ole Miss Athletics Director Ross Bjork was the guest speaker, and Allgood felt like him being there aided the cause greatly.

“This is the second time we've had Ross and the first time he came in, as he put it, was at the end of his rookie year as athletics director. We have enjoyed a working relationship with

Christmas started just before Halloween for many members of the North Mississippi Board of Realtors. At their bi-monthly meeting held last week, members brought an unwrapped toy to the luncheon held at the Oxford Conference Center in the effort to help fill the needs of the youth in the community. The local Christmas Store is the place where the toys were shipped to, said board president Linda Allgood.

“Usually what we've been doing is have a brunch the first week in December and we would do our toy drive then,” Allgood said. “The problem with that is, depending on when that would fall, the Christmas Store would have already given out some of what they had the weekend before.

“Now they would still take what we had and put in storage until the next year or if they had kids that came in

attendance, the plan was to give out information for the Christmas Store. Local attorney Nicholas Brown is on the Christmas Store board, and he also serves the realtor's board as well which is how the connection started.

Another local group that the board tried to focus on was Holding Hands, which is a non-profit that only employs young adults with learning disabilities. It's the first time that the group was brought to the attention of the board.

“It gives them a job and the big thing for them is they have a moving van and if you have furniture or if your students are moving in or across town whatever, if you call them, they will come and get it,” Allgood said. “They take it back to the store and re-sell it and everything they make goes toward the salaries for the young people that work there and the overhead.”

Ross calls it a career as Oxford volleyball coach

T

ara Ross is now able to say she shares something in common with NFL quarterback legend Peyton Manning. The Oxford High volleyball coach is leaving on a high note, just like Manning did following this most recent Super Bowl.

After 10 years leading the Lady Chargers, Ross has decided to call it a career. And she does it with a championship ring to size on her finger. Oxford won the Class II volleyball title this past Saturday at Millsaps College. It was an emotional win for Ross and the team. Tears of joy and hugs that seemed to last forever captured the feel of everyone that spilled on to the court following the win over Lewisburg.

Ross wiped away her tears in order to talk about her team that afternoon. She had to again Monday when she let the team know that there would be no long bus trips to the Delta to share or substitutions to make. A lot of the players had an idea that Ross would be leaving. There were rumors, whispers, of her intentions. But nothing is ever final until it's final.

“There were some parents that I had told.

Maggee (Hobson) told me one day that they don't really think you're not coming back. I think it was harder me just saying the words,” Ross said. “I don't think anybody was shocked. I wrote all the juniors a letter saying I'm leaving next year's team in their stead. They're going to be the six. It was hard. I got emotional. ” TURN TO ROSS PAGE 20

“They present a challenge because they recruited or either had transfers that were really talented kids at the skill positions and their speed is concerning,” Freeze said of the Eagles.

“They create options on almost any kind of blocking

scheme, whether it be power, counter, zone. A lot of the time they are going to have the capability of pulling and running the option and that’s not the easiest thing to prepare for when you don’t see it that regularly. It is a concern because of their speed and athleticism, but also because of the system. We’ve got a lot of work to do to get zoned in on stopping that.”

As for the losing streak, and the five losses overall, it's obvious Freeze has

“When you look at the stats it shows you the issues and the deficiencies we have that caused those.

Whether it was a critical turnover at a really bad time for you or a drop here or a missed tackle here or a missed fit here or an explo-

“You just have to play at 100 miles per hour every play it seems for us to have a chance to win those games.

You look at it and say we have certainly been beaten by quality opponents, that doesn’t make it feel any better though.”

Friday Night Previews: Week 12 Chargers-Gators to decide final playoff seeds from 1-5A

For the past five weeks, Oxford's Chargers have essentially been in playoff mode. The regular season comes to an end Friday night on the road for the Chargers, who have rolled to five straight wins since losing to West Point to open up Division 1-5A play.

Up next is a meeting with Lake Cormorant, another team that is 5-1 in 1-5A, which means who finishes second, and more importantly, who earns a home playoff game, will be decided in the outcome.

“This is as clear cut as the district standings can be coming into the last week.

The beauty of it is we don't have to scoreboard watch.

This is just us and them,” Cutcliffe said. “It's going to be decided on the field. It's the only game that has playoff implications. That's what you want, at the end of the year, you want things to be decided on the field.

You don't want to be looking at point differentials in another game or how it all shakes out.”

West Point has earned the top seed from 1-5A, while Clarksdale is the No. 4 seed. If Oxford loses Friday night, the playoffs will start on the road on Nov. 11.

Last week, the Chargers defeated Center Hill 49-18 at home on Senior Night.

John Reece McClure had a big game at quarterback, while wide receiver Jaquan Webb came through catching touchdowns for the Chargers.

Radio: FM 95.5 ally hard. Defensively, we had a few just blown assignments and gave up two passing touchdowns that we weren't real pleased with. Overall, it was a lot of really good things,” Cutcliffe said. “We had some receivers that played well and step up and make plays.

John Reece played well. I was certainly one of his best games. We put a lot on his shoulders and just trusted in him to make plays and take care of the football.”

Heading into the playoffs, Cutcliffe feels like he has a lot of players who can score touchdowns, and gain first downs.

“I think we're in a situation where we can pick our spots and take what the defense is giving us. If that means running the ball a high percentage of the time, I think we're good enough to do that,” Cutcliffe said. “If that means coming out and throwing it 60 times, I think we're good enough to do that. I think our guys buy into trying to be versatile that way.”

Lake Cormorant (7-4 overall, 5-1) is a balanced team on both sides of the ball, Cutcliffe said. The Gators have always been

Wide receiver Brandon Smith can do a little of everything, and regarded as one of the top overall athletes in the state. He enters the game with 59 catches for 1,301 yards and 16 touchdowns.

“He has made plays every week and certainly somebody you always to be aware of,” Cutcliffe said.

“Their young quarterback is playing really well and they can also run the football. I think they have good talent at running back and their

offensive line is big and physical. They're really a complete team. To be at 5-1 in the district says a lot about their team and how consistent they have played. I think it's a huge challenge.”

Record watch (subhead) Junior linebacker Quentin Wilfawn has a chance to surpass the season total in tackles this Friday night. The current record is 155 set by a teammate of Cutcliffe's, Will Britt. Jack Turner and Michael McGhee both came close to the record the past few seasons but were

unable to break it. Wilfawn has 145 stops in just 10 games, which has impressed Cutcliffe.

“He has a great chance to break the tackle record.

We've had some guys get really close, actually one or two tackles short, each of the last three years,” Cutcliffe said. “He has a chance to break it in the 11th game, where the other guys had 15 games. I think that's a huge accomplishment. He is just so consistent. He goes above and beyond. He makes every play he's supposed to make, and then he makes others on top it like

forcing turnovers, running things down from the backside. You know what you're going to get from Quentin once he steps on the field.

He's averaging right at 15 tackles per game for the season. I think last week was his lowest tackle number but he forced two fumbles and recovered a fumble and ran an interception back for a touchdown. The Oxford Chargers are going to have to rain 3-pointers down on opponents this season to make up for a lack of size.

Chargers have speed, ability to run teams ragged

In the 20 years that Drew Tyler has been leading the Oxford High Chargers on the basketball court, style of play has always been dictated by personnel. In years gone by, Tyler has relied on bigger framed players in the middle. There have been some teams with a mixture of size, and speed. And this year, with a little bit less overall height to work with, Tyler is looking to run and gun. On both sides of the court.

“Our solution to our lack of size is faster pace, more shots, more trips, more 3s,” Tyler said.

“At the same time, that means

being on the defensive more, too. We're going to be able to do some defensive schemes, strategies, that we haven't been able to do in the past just because we are smaller and quicker.”

OHS fans should expect the Chargers to be more baseline to baseline on defense. They will be able to pressure teams better, and longer, than in the past. By the time December and January rolls around, Tyler does want his team to take higher percentage shots and play high percentage basketball, on both ends of the court.

“We know you can live and die by the 3 but at the same time, we want to stretch our opponent's defense sideline to sideline and

make them have to really guard the perimeter,” Tyler said.

“Hopefully that will open up some driving lanes for us. Our ability to penetrate and attack those lanes, we're going to create some open shots for teammates. We've got to knock those shots down. They're going to push us off the 3-point line, so we are going to have to make some mid-range shots. Most definitely.”

Oxford's roster is headlined by senior combo guard Jarkel Joiner, who will sign with CalState Bakersfield next week.

Terry Williams, another senior, is also back at the other guard spot. The tandem are as good as any in the state. Tyler is also

bullish on what his freshmen can provide.

“We feel like we have one of the best freshmen class in the state. It's going to be my job and coach Tyler Reed's job to make sure that the ninth grade group is ready to play varsity basketball,” Tyler said. “You look at our roster and you think it's mother's morning out daycare. During recess, this ninth-grade group has been playing basketball. They have really put the pressure on the 10th and 11th graders.”

The only other player that has started a varsity game currently on the roster is Hiram Wadlington, and he is currently on the basketball team. Tyler added there will be highs and lows and

a learning curve to deal with.

“We will have growing pains but at the same time, we were really able to hold some of our freshmen to the hot flame that comes with varsity basketball,” Tyler said. “We found some things out and we don't think we're going into our season where our young players don't know what to expect out of them.

They know what we've been getting them ready for as far as on the floor, and the mental side of it, too.”

Cliff Ormon admitted he was a little nervous about the start of the 2016-2017 season but at the same time, he was also very excited to see what his Oxford Lady Chargers could do on the court. The season is right around the corner and this is the second year for Ormon, who helped guide the program to the MHSAA Class 5A state tournament last season.

“There are things they're going to seed in those first few games that you can't simulate in practice but I'm definitely excited about the first games to open the season,” Ormon said. “We had a great year last season, so we're hoping that

some of that carries over into this year as well.”

Ormon is going to really rely on the experience of Tiara King, a senior, this year, as well as junior Jordan Freeze, another returner from last season.

“Tiara is a proven point guard in 5A. She's played a lot of years and had success. She was an all-division player last year and I think she is as good of an athlete as you will see in any sport, period,” Ormon said of King, who is an all-state performer in track as well. “She is also a tough kid who can really affect the game defensively. She changes the game. Jordan Freeze had a tremendous sophomore year and probably could have been all division. It was a toss up with a lot of

players and she got injured late in the year so some of that didn't carry over into our tournament where the coaches didn't see her.

She had some games where she hit five or more 3s. She was a difference maker through the middle of our year. We're expecting her to lift up her scoring and from there, it's going to be on some juniors.”

Calicia Zinn is a junior who Ormon was looking forward to seeing play. He added she had a great summer. Christina Owens is a guard who will see playing time, while Kelsey Wilborn is a sophomore who hustles and makes things happen, Ormon said.

“She gives energy and effort and will get better as the year goes on,” Ormon added about Wilborn.

“Cemiah McGee is another junior who has to be ready to play. We do have juniors in place, just not a lot of experience there. Then we have some other young players we're going to let make a name for themselves.”

The personnel is different and there will be adjustments based on how the season goes, Ormon said.

“It's really going to be what teams allow us to do and who can step up,” he said. “We're going to have implement some different things as far as how we do it. We may play zone, which is something I haven't done a lot in the past.

We're going to dictate what the kids can do.”

Ormon said that his players have come in to work everyday

with a great attitude and ready to work.

“We have had great practices, but there is a lot of youth and kids who just haven't been in the fire,” Ormon said. “That's what early season games are for. We have an exciting tournament here the 21st and 22nd. Ingomar, the defending state champions, are coming in and New Site girls and Ridgeland which played in the state tournament in 5A. You also have Minor, Alabama. Independence that played in the 3A state tournament.

OHS dance team has made Hinton better in several ways

Ellie Hinton has been dancing competitively since she was age 7. She's been on the Oxford High dance team since it started, and enjoyed every moment.

“It's been great and so fun.

The first year, it wasn't very technical and it was more fun and we got to do maybe one basketball game,” Hinton said. “Now, it's all technical girls and we have been in studios before. We get to be at every basketball game, every football game. We get to do halftime, we get to do pep rallies and we have gotten more known over the years and I think it's going to get better as we even go on.”

For Hinton, being a part of the Chargerettes has changed her in a very positive way. Her best friend, Katherine Poole, is someone she met on the team.

“We didn't know each other that well freshman year and now senior year, we're best friends,” she said.

“It's because we have spent so much time together. Our team, I feel like we've learned people skills and how to get along with everybody. In order for a team to be great, you have to function well and I think my team, every year, has taught me how to be a team player.

They're like my family.”

Football is a favorite sport for Hinton, but she does enjoy basketball. Hinton added when you think of a dance team, you think football, with the girls doing their routines under the lights.

MEET YOUR Chargerette Ellie Hinton “The most challenge thing about basketball is there are games on Monday night or other nights and people have homework,” Hinton said. “I have homework on weekends, but I have two days to do it. In basketball season and we have a game and homework, tough luck, I have to do both. I love basketball season. The games are fun, the boys are awesome.”

Hinton was a cheerleader in middle school but it just didn't fit. She also ran cross country but when she heard about the dance team, she knew that was her thing, or at least something to try.

“I love being a part of a team and I tried out thinking if it wasn't fun, I wouldn't do it next year,” she said. “It's been my favorite thing I've done all of high school. I love Coach Lyons and Ms. Little and all my teammates. It's given me more than I could have asked my freshman year for sure.”

High school has flown by for Hinton, who was told by others that would be the case when she first arrived on campus.

“I said there is no way this is going to go by fast. It feels so slow and now that I'm a

senior, high school was literally in a blink of an eye,” Hinton said. “It went by so fast.

We had senior night last Friday and they were announcing all of our names and where we are going to college.”

Hinton is headed to study special education at Mississippi State. The majority of Hinton's friends are going to Ole Miss. And both of her parents went to Ole Miss.

“I'm going for my major and at Ole Miss you can get an endorsement for it but I want to major in it,” Hinton said who was thinking about the dance team at MSU. “It's a huge time commitment and I want to get my freshman year started off with great grades and I feel like if I was on the dance team, I might be a little distracted.

I'll take it from there. If they have company dancing, I know Ole Miss has contemporary dancing, I would probably do something like that if I had the opportunity.”

Jazz is the thing Hinton does the best. She said the music is “super upbeat” and that she also likes pop music. The dance team helps choreograph the majority of the routines each week. Hip hop is fun to Hin-

Friday Night Previews: Week 12 Commodores host Shannon to open 4A playoffs

A final tune up before the start of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs is out of the way for the Lafayette Commodores.

The regular season finale at Byhalia this past Friday night only meant another win on the slate. The Commodores, who have won eight straight, had already locked up the top spot in the playoffs from Division 2-4A, which meant a home game this Friday night.

Their opponent, Shannon, plays in 1-4A and the Red Raiders finished fourth with a 2-3 record. Lafayette coach Michael Fair said the Red Raiders (6-4 overall) are very athletic and run well based on film study.

“They have some size up front. They have a tailback that plays some that is about 295 pounds. And when you hear that, you think he's pretty slow, but this cat can go,” Fair said. “He's a big athlete so he poses a problem.

They have two quarterbacks that they play. Both of them throw well and they have receivers that can go get it.”

Shannon likes to stretch the field vertically in the passing game, which means Lafayette's defensive line will have to play well. If they are able to get pressure, then the Commodores could garner as many sacks as they've had this year in a single game.

“Offensively they are balanced. I think they're a good team. Defensively, they run to the ball well and they play an odd-man front. That's what they've been all year.

Shannon has averaged 208 yards per game through the air and 229 yards per game on the ground. Quarterbacks Jordan Gilleyln and Martavious Fells have combined to throw for just over 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns. The duo has also combined to throw 12 interceptions. Fair said both like to throw first but they can also get out of the pocket and run some.

“They want to throw the ball and we haven't seen many pass first offenses.

Most of the folks we go against are run first,” Fair said. “They do enjoy throwing the ball down the field, but they do have two running backs that can go.”

Shannon likes to play man coverage and jam receivers off the line on defense. Fair said it will be a challenge for his receivers to get off that jam and into their passing routes.

“Sometimes they will play

a Cover 1 which is one safety and then sometimes they will play Cover 0 and just get everybody down in the box to try and stop your run,” Fair said. “We have faced a couple of teams that have run a lot of man and I think we do a good job of balancing our offense. It's hard to play that against us because we have threats on the outside and (quarterback) Will (Ard) is throwing the ball so well.”

There was a different feel to start the week. The Commodores have to win, or the season will be over.

“You can tell that it's on the kids' minds and that's good, that's where it needs to be,” Fair said. “We'll put in a good week of preparation for them and we'll be ready to go. I think their mentality is going to be a lot different than what it's been the last couple of weeks.”

One thing that Fair is starting to do now that the playoffs have arrived is pulling back on practice from a time standpoint.

Some schools lengthen practices in the playoffs. Fair is just the opposite.

“We want to keep their

legs under them and keep them fresh,” Fair said. “We will try to be very efficient with our time with them and get them out of here and let them rest. Hopefully that makes a big difference on Friday. I can't be any more proud of our coaching staff and the work we put in on the weekends. All the film watching that goes on for our whole staff does, it will be fun to see it all come together for a game like this.”

“There are just so many that have given me a shout out. It's amazing to say you

won a state championship, but that is just a small part of life,” Ross said. “I hope for nothing else that they knew I cared for them as people. I wanted them to grow into great adults and be successful. I love sports and I think sports is a great way to build character and to get through the defeats and let the highs really motivate you. I hope this is a great moment in their life and always look back with excitement.”

There were a lot of people for Ross to thank. From the basketball coaches,

Drew Tyler, Cliff Ormon and Shayne Linzy when he was at OHS, to the support staff and her assistants, Ross said she couldn't have done it by herself.

“It really does take a village. From the booster club, to the administration.

We shared all that space together with the coaches and helping them get me through it,” Ross said. “Between my boss, Dr. (Martha) McLarty who was at Della to Steve Hurdle here at OIS, the fact that they allowed me to leave early and do what I need to

do, this job takes so much time.”

This year's Lady Chargers were a special, special group. The title win was one of my tip top ones to cover in almost 20 years. It's rare to have a team focus on an ending and then come through just like they planned it. Again, Ross wasn't the only reason the Lady Chargers came this far, but she's a big part of it.

And it's so, so pleasing to see her leave the way she is.

Lafayette girls basketball coach Shayne Linzy has seven seniors on his roster this season.

Experienced Lady Commodores ready to begin 2016-17 season

A large senior class highlights the roster of the Lafayette Lady Commodores heading into the 2016-17 season. Coach Shayne Linzy has some standouts in Orianna Shaw and Shaniyah Buford but also some very solid complements he can rely on.

“We know what we're doing.

There is room for improvement, just like anybody, but the good thing is it's not new to them. I've been here a year so they know how the system goes,” Linzy said.

“They have definitely bought in and with a year under our belt, I'm able to add some wrinkles and some different ideas. They

seem to be good with and seem to be rolling with it. I'm very excited.”

Lafayette won 22 games last season and advanced into the MHSA Class 4A state tournament. Buford averaged 21.4 points per game, while Shaw averaged almost six rebounds per game and contributed great defense. Mariah Holland, a sophomore, also did a lot of good things for the Lady Commodores last season.

“Those are my three returning starters and then I have another senior who started last year and then some others who say some playing time,” Linzy said. “The good part is I really feel like we have offensive power from other

areas. One that I have been really excited about is Chelsea Allen who is going to be a senior. She played in every ballgame last year for me and very easily could have started. She will start this year and I think a lot of good things are going to come from her this year.

Mariah Holland and Xhiir Burgess, who will be a sophomore, I'm very excited about them. Xhiir has been working on her offensive game. Last year she was more of a rebounder and a defensive player. This year, she has added more offensive game to her play.”

Azariah Buford will see time at point guard for Linzy, which will allow Shaniyah Buford and Allen to see more time scoring.

“I can put Azariah on the floor and if she gets in trouble, she has those two girls to help her. She's getting experience now so she will be able to handle the majority of the load next year when those seniors are gone,” Linzy added.

There is a good chance that the Lady Commodores start off faster this year due to their experience and comfort of what Linzy likes to do.

“There are teams that start on fire and they do it all year. I think we're one of those teams that could do that if we wanted to,” Linzy said. “But at the same time, I do like to see a progression because things happen during a season, illness, injury, foul problems. In these early games,

they're not division games, so I want to see multiple lineups on the floor and multiple kids play because I want to see who can handle game situations. This year we're deep and I want to make sure certain girls see some extra time on the floor because when we get into January and February, and hopefully into March, if something happens, I can feel good to count on some of these other girls to come off the bench to provide that spark or not miss a beat when we're playing.”

Lafayette coach John Sherman has stressed free-throw shooting and increased strength for his basketball team heading into the 2016-17 season.

Commodores looking to take steps in Sherman's second year

Another step, or two, is what John Sherman wants to see his Lafayette Commodores take as basketball team and program this coming season. It's the second year for Sherman to lead the program, which made big strides in a short amount of time in 20152016. Ever since the summer, when the Commodores played 24 games, there have been gains made. The dividends of hard work are yet to be decided, and Sherman is doing his best to stress coming together to the 10 players he has to work with.

“I've seen great improvement, individually, as far as develop-

ment. I've seen some signs of maturity,” Sherman said. “We've got to put that together. We've got to put that improvement individually into a team, into guys that work together and share the ball together and realize what it takes to be a winning basketball team and program.”

Strong man-to-man defense is always stressed under Sherman and this year will be no different in that regard. He added that he thought the team was better from an offensive standpoint than they have been in a while.

“There isn't one great scorer.

We don't have that one player that stands out above the rest as far as scoring but all of them are pretty solid,” Sherman said. “I've

told them that and what they've got to believe in or what they have to understand is how good of a team we're going to be is going to be very closely related to how good of an assist team we're going to be.”

Two things the team has worked on more than ever before are 1) free throw shooting and 2) lifting weights. Sherman looks at free throws as “game winning shots.”

“Now, when our guys miss a free throw, they're mad when they miss one,” Sherman said.

“They can shoot free throws physically. When you're on the line in the game, now it's on them. It's their DNA, their makeup. They have shot enough

where they're confident in making free throws and confidence breeds success and success breeds confidence. It's a never ending cycle. Now they have to do it in a game. They have to take a step and a next step.”

Sherman told the players they can be a really improved basketball team and still finish last in the division because of how good the 2-4A field is. After football concludes, the Commodores will add four more players to the roster. The 10 non football players that have been in the gym since the start of school have done their part in regards to effort and hustle.

“These guys have been with me for two years now and I've got

a strong junior class. They're the core group of this program,” Sherman said. “I think number six through 10 is very comparable to one through five. We have good matchups as far as five on five or four on four, whatever we want to do. It makes it competitive and quality practices. We have specialized on getting stronger and getting better at free-throw shooting. They know by now what style of defense and fundamentals and ball handling and shooting that we do. We still have to clean up our quality of play.”

Chargers looking to come out on top in 5A cross country

If everything goes according to plan, the Oxford Chargers will be state champions in cross country Saturday afternoon. If the Lady Chargers run like they are capable in the final meet of the season, they, too, can be champions in Class 5A. Head coach Chris Patton saw his Chargers win the Region 1-5A title last weekend in Saltillo by four points. He is confident heading into the state meet in Clinton that they will be on top again.

“If we go down there and compete like we have been competing. It's like I've said to them, now is when we want to run our fastest,” Patton said.

“We're getting plenty of rest this week, not training as hard as we have been.

I'm just getting their legs under them so they can run their best time they have run this season. If we do that, we should be victorious.”

Last week, the Chargers had five runners in the top 12 and the goal is to have all seven that compete finish in the top 14, which means all-state recognition. John Owen Yoste finished second on the team last week, and in the top five overall. He was all state last season, and looking to help lead the team to a title this Saturday.

“For him, he got off to a slow start this season and he got a little discouraged. I told him that I was training him to run fast at the right time. He kept training and now he's running his best times of the season and some of his best times ever,” Patton said. “JO is such a competitor. He's that guy that you can always count on. He was good last year, the year before and as an eighth grader. The best part of his races are the finish, from a mile and a half on, he's that guy. You better look out, because he's coming. He's been a big help, he's been training so hard.”

Yoste said he was very pleased with his most recent time, and he hasn't felt this good since he was a freshman.

“I've had meets where I've gone 17:30s and then the next week low 17s. It's been consistent and I haven't had that so it feels really good,” Yoste said adding the key at state is the finish. “A strong third mile, that last half mile is hard. You come out of the woods and you can see straight up.

The final 800, you see who you have to get. It's really just mental from there.”

Towards the end of the season, Yoste has been stronger at the end.

His first mile has been “kind of chill” and after the second mile, he really starts to compete.

“I'm going to try and hit around 5:12 the first mile and then see where I am and really try to compete those last two miles,” he said about strategy Saturday. “That's all that's left for the rest of the season. I feel like we can win and that we can definitely get six guys at least all state. That would be huge. Being top five is a big goal for me.”

The Lady Chargers finished second in the 1-5A meet, with Addie Thompson finishing at the top for the team.

Patton feels like his team can give more, and that they can do better.

“All we have to do compete and I mean compete from the gun, don't wait to compete two miles into the race because then it's too late,” Patton said. “I felt like we waited a little too late to kind of turn on the jets. A lot of it is mental and they've told me this.

They're afraid if they get out hard, they won't have anything left. But this is the state championship, give it all you've got. There is no next week.

Oxford swim caps another successful season in 2016

Improvement over the entire season is what pleased Oxford swim coach Robert Gonzalez the most. With the season coming to an end this past weekend at the MHSAA state meet in Tupelo, Gonzalez was able to look back on the fall in a positive manner.

The Lady Chargers finished second out of all the schools that are in Class 5A, and sixth overall in the meet.

Gonzalez added that they were the strong part of the meet from a points standpoint.

“Our girls' relays did phenomenal. In the 200 freestyle relay, the quartet of Anna Dennis, Lucy Chiniche, Kate Byars and Caki Field that have been doing great all year, they finished third in the 200 freestyle relay and that same group finished fourth in the 400 freestyle relay,” Gonzalez said. “They were top in Class 5A in both of those events. They finished third overall in the 200

which is the first time that the girls have medaled in any relay for years. That was a high point in the meet and something that was a major step forward for the girls to get on that podium and take that next step, that next approach for them long term.

They should understand that they have the ability and the expectation for them in the next few years is now not break through, but to move up even higher. That was a really special moment for the kids. They were really emotional and really excited.”

Before the season started, Gonzalez, and the swimmers, were under the impression from others that this was supposed to be a rebuilding season because they had very few seniors back.

“We never allow that mentality to kind of take place within the program itself. We had to make sure that we kept the expectations as high as possible,” Gonzalez said. “Going from there, we saw a lot of im-

of some really phenomenal seniors last year and be able to hold down the fort. Being able to get through this year as well as we did, I think it puts us in a great position to do so much better the next

couple of years. With such a young team, I think it's a catapulting stage for us.”

Almost all of the team returns for the 2017 season and with the extra momentum garnered at the state

meet, Gonzalez was upbeat about the future from a scoring standpoint.

“We did have three individuals who did make the finals at the state and were selected as all-state performers. Lucy Chiniche, who finished fourth overall and was first in Class 5A, she was was second team all-state in the 100 freestyle by going 57.36 seconds,” Gonzalez said.

“Jeffrey Wang and Graham Norris were selected third team all-state for their individual performances. Jeffrey in the 300 freestyle and Graham in the 100 butterfly.

That was really exciting. Last year we had three individuals qualify for finals and this year we have three qualify for finals and we also had four other people finish ninth or 10th.
