The Pride of the South band is where Randy Dale is supposed to be. The Ole Miss graduate from Olive Branch played in the band as a student and for the past

seven years, he's served as the assistant director of bands. Dale has been a huge football fan his entire life, so Saturdays in the fall are very special to him.

Parker's love for Lafayette drives him for third term

For the past 12 years, Johnny Parker has seen the Lafayette County School District grow into one of the most successful and highest achieving in the state of Mississippi. Parker, who is seeking a third term on the school board this coming election, has a deep love for Lafayette, the children that make up the district and those that help educate them on a daily basis.

Parker's involvement with Lafayette started 25 years ago. Both of his children, Kevin and Molly, attended Lafayette, from kindergarten through graduation in high school.

Along the way, Parker has been named Parent of the Year, he has served as president of the booster club and was the past president of the Lafayette Youth Athletic Association. He coached hundreds of district children in baseball, and when it came time to

build a new sports complex and a field house, he volunteered to help build the press box that overlooks the baseball and softball fields.

When events are going on at Lafayette, Parker makes an attempt to be there. He doesn't just show up for board meetings or collect the check they receive. To Parker, being on the campus, is like being at home. He treats everyone like they are part of his family.

“Because of the summer youth programs that we had at Lafayette, I still have children that I coached through the years, call me Coach Parker to this day,” he said. “I'm so proud of that. When I used to walk through the halls, those children would approach me and they would all call me Coach Parker, whether they were on my team or someone else's team. The uniqueness of having all the students on one campus gives it that family atmosphere. You love your

Sometimes I may brag too much, but I'm very proud to be a part of all this.”

Lafayette has maintained a rating of “B” from an academic achievement standpoint while Parker

has been on the board. In 2015, with no waivers that are allowed by the state, the district ranked in the top 15 out of 146 total in the state. All of the achievements came with a budget far less than the one across town, and without taxes being raised for county residents.

“My children were actually in the trailers that we moved off campus before we had the big building project at the Upper Elementary School and redesigning the sports complex facilities. I was proud to be a part of that,” Parker said. “I think everyone who hasn't been to this particular spot on campus needs to go on the home side of the football field, go up on the bleachers and then go to the far left at the top and just stand up there and look around. It makes you feel so proud of how far we've

come in just a short period of time. Our budget is about half of what the city budget is but we are looked at as equals in every aspect of the school, academics, sports, whatever. We've done a lot with a lot less. I think we've been good stewards of the taxpayer's dollar. As long as I'm on the school board, we will always do that.”

There is a need for at least one new building to house students. Enrollment has continued to increase in the district, and Parker would like to use his experience to help make those projects run smoothly. Besides his 12 years of experience on the board, Parker has 30 years of experience working in construction, and with contractors, through his plumbing and electrical business, which has always served the district well in the past.

“Right now we're busting at the seams. We know it. We actually have a picture of a possible building and I have experience in dealing with architects and the project managers, having gone through that with the building of the Upper Elementary School, it helps me look at the blueprints and keep an eye on everything,” Parker said. “I think that's a big benefit going into a building project. We are the ones that have to keep that in check and being in the business for so long, I know how to keep it in check.”

The reason the district is so close to Parker's heart is because of his daughter Molly who is teaching math at the high school.

His daughter-in-law, Margo, teaches kindergarten in the district. He also has two grandchildren that are set to go through the school system.

“I have a vested interest in the present and the future of Lafayette. I've always been one that whoever calls me about an issue, district wide, not just my immediate district, I've always answered to them,” Parker said. “I have more to give. I will always be the voice of the students, the parents and the teachers in that board room. I was this way before I became a board member and I will be that way after I'm completed out there. This is the 27th year that the OPC has been operating the forest. The trail costs $5 a person and all of the money being raised will be split between the commission and the university’s rec department. OPC will be using the money to offset the cost of setting up the trail and the university will be using their portion of the funds to pay for scholarships and to send students to conferences.

Friday night, the University of Mississippi’s Department of Physics will be holding their 10th annual night of Spooky Physics.

Community members of all ages are welcome to come and see demonstrations of the power of physics with a Halloween twist. Students and faculty of the department will be showing off the science of liquid nitrogen in a variety of ways including freezing flowers, marshmal-

Tonight, is the second, and final, night of the Oxford Park Commission’s annual Haunted Forest and Goblin Egg Hunt being held at Avent Park. The two-night event began Wednesday night and will last through 10 tonight. The event was put together through a partnership with the University of Mississippi’s Recreation Management program.

The Haunted Forest is recommended for children 10 and older and opens at 7.

Younger children are allowed on the trail if accompanied by an adult, though the OPC advises there will be a few scary things along the trail. Mr. Harold Barroner Smith, 80, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, at the Mississippi State Veterans’ Affairs Home in Oxford.

Mr. Smith was an attorney and also a proud veteran. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Harold retired from the United States Army as a Lt. The city of Oxford is preparing for the ribbon cutting that will kick off phase one of the Woodlawn-Davis Nature Reserve. The new park will be at the end of West Oxford Loop where it meets Anderson Road and feature a variety of native plants.

Katrina Hourin is the senior planner with the city of Oxford and is overseeing the project. Hourin said that under the most ideal of circumstances, the funds to have the park fully operational could be raised and put to use to have park open and functional around five years from now. The park is projected to cost around $1.7 million dollars and much of the plant life in the park, the trees in particular, will take years to properly cultivate, so there is no exact time frame on the parks construction and opening at this time. The plan is for the nature center to be completely open and accessible to the community.

“We’re surrounded by nature, but much of it is privately owned land,” Hourin said. “We want to have programming geared toward education.

It would be accessible to anyone and the educational component will be in place to help raise awareness about a variety of things and maybe also give young visitors a different perspective of how they fit in the world. I think that, on a very basic level, it’s important for everyone to know how they fit into their natural environment rather than a constructed environment.”

All of the plant life that will be installed at the park will be native to North Mississippi. The land for the reserve was acquired by the city a few years ago in a land trade with a private citizen. Shortly after, in July 2012, Hourin was brought in on the project.

The first idea for the land was to create a large walking trail that went through the area. However, there were a lot of opinions on what to do with the property coming from the neighboring Woodlawn subdivision. The general consensus was that they wanted to create a park that was different from what other parks in town had to offer. For the next several months, Hourin and her department worked to find a balance between making sure the residents of the Woodlawn subdivision had their voices heard and that the city would be able to construct a park unlike any other in the area.

There is currently no concrete plan for how the reserve will be laid out, but concept maps have been drawn up to indicate the city’s intentions.

There are plans for what is termed a “native foodscape garden” that will feature vegetables and edible plants that are grow naturally in the region. As far as physical structures, the park will have a Grecian amphitheater that will serve as a space for performances, lectures and more.

A large pavilion will be constructed to give park goers a place to gather for birthday parties, meetings and anything else that will be needed.

A maintenance shack will also be put up on the property.

Groves of native trees will be planted around the park.

There are plans for pecan trees that will likely be a part of the native foodscape garden. An area on the plans has been set aside for a vernal pool, a wetland area that may or may not be holding water depending on precipitation levels and other environmen-

tal factors. Butterfly gardens, botanical gardens and open grass areas are also mentioned in the conceptual plans for the area.

The city is partnering with the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center to make the reserve a reality and help set up and maintain the education initiatives of the park.

Hourin said that this partnership with Strawberry Plains will take the educational aspect of the nature reserve to another level, which she considers one of, if not the most, important thing the park will have to offer the community.

“Not everyone has access to nature,” she said. “Some people might have a bigger backyard, but they don’t all live with a biologist. When you bring the partnership with the Audubon Society into consideration and the different experts from the university, then there’s the opportunity to learn.”

The ribbon cutting and dedication will be held at the future site of the Woodlawn-Davis Nature Reserve on Saturday, November 12. Festivities begin at 3 p.m. with a welcome speech from mayor Pat Patterson. Jody Burnett of St. Peters Episcopal Church will be there to bless the park.

More speakers will be featured and the ribbon will be cut at 3:30. From 3:40 to 4 there will be kids’ fun run around the loop running the through the park. The next hour will feature tours of the area. At 5, The McLeod Guyer Trio will be performing. White wants to contribute to Lafayette County Schools

Bryan White is a graduate and former employee of the Lafayette County School District and is hoping to be brought back into the fold as a member of the school board. White is a native of Lafayette County. He and his wife have one child currently enrolled in the school district and one who will be starting there as soon as he is old enough for their pre-K program. The certified personal accountant worked for seven years as the district’s business manager where he put his extensive financial knowledge and skills to work for the betterment of the district. White took some time before his busy workday Tuesday morning to sit down with Oxford Citizen reporter Chaning Green at the CPA’s acCHANING GREEN counting firm on North Lamar Bryan White is a local CPA running for Lafayette County School Board. CHANING GREEN: Did you graduate from Lafayette?

BRYAN WHITE: I did. I graduated in 1995 and went on to Ole Miss and graduated from there

in accountancy. After that, I lived in Memphis for about 10 months were I worked for a large accounting firm there.

Memphis just didn’t really do it

for me to open my own practice.

I have no interest in returning to that role as business manager, but after have kids of my own, my interest in the school district and the work being done there went back to that and what role I could have in my child’s education. I mean doing more than just sitting down with him every day and helping him with his homework, but to better the schools as a whole for everyone.

GREEN: How long have you had an interesting in running?

WHITE: I first became interested last year, 2105, when my son transitioned from pre-K program to kindergarten. I didn’t see anything necessarily wrong, but if anyone asked my opinion on things, I would definitely have one to give and have the capacity to make decisions.

GREEN: How did you end up as the business manager there and why did you leave?

Standing room only at this month's Oxford School Board meeting

The Oxford Middle School lecture center was packed out to standing room only during this month’s regular meeting of the Oxford School Board Monday night.

This was the first regularly scheduled meeting that the district has held since the community outcry following Superintendent Brian Harvey’s comments to the Oxford High School student newspaper The Charger regarding the district’s considering of a controversial approach to closing the achievement gap.

At the beginning of the meeting, the board recognized three OHS students for earning the title of National Merit Semifinalists.

OHS Principal Bradley Roberson congratulated Nitin Ankisetty, Shawn Chao and Anne Hardy for their hard work and contribution to the district.

Each student had taken a total of 16 advance placement or college-level

courses, the maximum offered by the high school.

The three students are also the current top three achieving students in their graduating class.

After those students were recognized, the board then asked, as they do every meeting, if anyone in the audience would like to address the board.

This is known as the public participation portion of the school board meetings.

Five members of the community volunteered and were given five minutes each to speak.

One of the speakers was Walter Zinn, an attorney who represents members of the community and helped to request a special school board meeting that was held last Tuesday night at the Oxford Conference Center. He gave the school board a list of six questions and two requests that he would like the board to address as soon as possible. Those questions were: “What has the school done to address the achievement gap in Oxford Public Schools;

The first request Zinn presented to the board were for an outlining of the demographics and total count of students who have faced disciplinary action at the school. The second request was for the achievement gap in the Oxford School District dating back 10 years to be outlined by demographics.

During the meeting, Harvey also recognized the work of the district’s principals and their role in helping the district achieve the No. 1 ranking in the state based on student test scores from the previous year. He pointed out the work of Della Davidson Elementary School Principal LaTonya Robinson, saying that if they were forced to name an MVP for the occasion, she would be it.

Gordon Center working to preserve the past, ensure the future

In 1951, on the northern edge of Lafayette County, several African American churches in Abbeville banded together and raised enough money to open Abbeville School. Before integration, the black students in the area had no other option but to attended what were referred to then as “church schools” that were funded and operated by churches in the community.

The Abbeville School served students from first to eighth grade. Many students’ school careers ended at that point, but some were able to continue their education at an area high school. Abbeville School had just four rooms with each divided up for two classes and one grade per class. Former attendees of the school estimate the total student population to be well over 100, adding that there were at least two school buses operated by community

members to make sure kids made it to class.

After the implementation of mandatory desegregation, the students were absorbed by local white schools and, once the integration was complete, the building that once housed Abbeville School was left unoccupied for more than four decades. In January of 2009, the Gordon Community and Cultural Center Inc., a registered nonprofit, took over the building and began renovations that were later completed in 2013. The nonprofit is overseen by a seven-person board of directors composed of both current and former members of the Abbeville Community.

This past Saturday morning, an event was held to raise funds to keep the center maintained and keep its different enrichment programs operational.

Since its renovation, the school, now known as the Gordon Center, has been used for summer programs and

The fundraiser featured a silent auction of donated items that ranged from jewelry, handmade clothing items, goats and cookbooks donated by John Currence. Games for all ages were set up through-

out the building, including a special room for younger kids as well as an area outside where children were playing with a parachute.

Theodore Isom and his brother Ben were both students at the school in the 1950s, joining the first year it was operational. The

men were each 15 and 12 years old at the time, respectively. Standing near tables covered in handmade clothing that was being sold as part of the fundraiser, Theodore gestured around the room, recalling the time he spent there as a student.

“I remember my teacher sitting right there and our desks went this way,” Isom said, pointing at an green chalkboard and wooden desks that sat on opposite sides of the room. “Mr. Lockhart was along this wall, and his class faced this way so that we could have two teachers in each room. This building is a landmark. This is the original.”

In 1959 or 60, an extension was added on to the original schoolhouse. The extension has also fallen into disrepair over the decades and the Gordon Center is working to raise enough funds to renovate that as well. So far, the Gordon Center has received a TURN TO GORDON PAGE 10

Strength, faith, support has aided Gall through cancer

Strength, support from her family and friends, and her faith in God, carried Sheila Gall through breast cancer a decade ago. She is banking on all of them again as she deals with a second bout of cancer. Three days after being cancer free for 10 years, Gall found out she would have to do battle with the disease again.

Pains in her neck brought her to her doctor, Kurre Luber, who performed a knee surgery on Gall.

The belief initially was she had pinched nerves. She underwent therapy and it helped ease the pain in her neck, but not the one in her hand. After a CT scan was ordered, the results showed that cancer had returned to her body.

It took Gall a solid year to overcome cancer the first time. She had several issues crop up and hinder her recovery. In total, she had six surgeries that year. Gall originally found the first cancer through a lump in her breast.

“It was very high, so I didn't pay it much attention. I knew I was going to have my yearly check up and discuss it with my doctor then,” Gall recalled. “I had a mammogram but nothing showed. I said 'By the way, I have a lump up here.' He checked it out right then and ran back and look at the mammogram again. It still didn't show.”

Just to make sure, Gall had a biopsy completed and two days later, it was ruled she indeed had cancer.

“It was like wow, like a tornado just sucked out everything,” Gall said de-

scribing her shock. “A couple of days later, I wasn't in a trance, but I still had to decide all these different options. I was trying to decide which way I was going to go. I sat down on my floor and I almost had like a 2year-old temper fit. I was crying and then I sat back and smiled. I said this is silly, this isn't going to accomplish anything. I have got to fight this.”

Cancer was overwhelming at first but over the days, and weeks, things got better for Gall. She pulled in her support groups, her family, the church and the people she worked with. The congregation at St. Andrew's Methodist were very helpful, Gall said.

Her latest cancer is a hormone driven form of breast cancer, which settled in Gall's vertebrate.

“What happened was a couple of little cells didn't die the first time,” she said. “I was surprised after 10 years. I really, really was. I don't think anything surprises the doctors.

They've seen it all. I did feel like the world had been pulled from underneath me that day when they said it wasn't pinched nerves, it was cancer.”

The type of cancer that Gall is battling is not curable, but it is able to be controlled. She said that was just as good.

“What they've done is given me a hormone blocker and it will encase all the little cells that are loose and it will never be able to grow or go anywhere. Maybe it will even be able to suffocate it. I don't know that part,” Gall said. “It is as the point where they can control it and nothing can TURN TO GALL PAGE 9

get into it and can't get out.

They didn't even have the hormone blocker when I had cancer 10 years ago. They are making strides, big improvements. If you can get that treatment quick enough, there are things that can help you.

There is a patch in the ribs that is being dealt with by radiation. With this one, I have a lot of pain. I still do. But you have

to get up, you have to face it and fight it. Then you have to be an advocate. You need to help other people through it.”

Gall is big on the awareness aspect of cancer and that's why she is so active with Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. She has provided motivational stories for others.

She tells people they can't wait in regards to fighting cancer or getting checked by their doctor. Gall knows people that are afraid of the results, but she insists they need to find out.

“Anything can trigger cancer in your body. You never know,” she said. “The biggest thing is you have to take care of it. You can not wait. You have to find a support group. There are people that can help you. The cancer center here, you will find a network that you will not believe. They have social workers and people to help you through things.”

work the students put in to get the band sounding just right. “We open the doors to this building about six hours before kickoff.

Our staff has got a lot to do as far as getting our equipment over to the stadium and getting water ready for the students. We also play in the Grove, so there is a set up for that. Certain pieces of the uniform that they don't use until game day, we keep it and pass it up. Most of that takes place in the Grove, so we have staff that take vans and golf carts everywhere on game day.”

Some students have their instruments with them, while others store them in the music building. There is a pep band in place for the Rebels when the do the Walk of Champions.

“After that, you can see our drummers playing on the stage in the Grove and that happens about an hour and 45 minutes before kickoff. Then you will se the entire band by the stage and that goes along with the cheerleaders and Rebelettes,” Dale said. “That's something that has been going on since the early '90s.

It's a lot different now because of how crowded the Grove is now, but it's a special day for our students. They really, really enjoy it.”

There was a time when Dale was a student when he could tell just how many fans gathered up close to the stage. Now, when he looks out, he can only really see tailgate tents. The band congregates and then marshals on University Avenue in order to parade the band into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Once they arrive there, they kill some time before getting prepared for the pre-game show.

“That's another big component of game days. That's undergone changes over the years, but it's still a unique thing to Ole Miss.

It's really a good way to set the tone and it's very neat for the band students,” Dale said. “We start off with the fanfare and then we march from south towards the north with the fight song and then we play something called Swing Low Ole Miss which has components of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and I Saw the Light. Being a part of the pageantry of college football is a highlight for Dale, who added he was more of a Rebel fan than Ole Miss employee.

“Just getting to plug in a tiny little way is just amazing,” Dale said. “We tell our students that they must strive to be the center of school spirit of Ole Miss Athletics and I think we achieve that for the most part. We try to engage the crowd as much as possible.

We try to fill in any kind of open space with cheers or some kind of music, anything we can contribute.”

Jason List, who is the assistant athletics director for marketing and fan experience, raved about the role of the band before and during games.

“Our relationship with The Pride of the South has grown every year,” List said. “They are integrated into our overall strategy on game days to provide the best game-day experience for our fans as possible. We communicate almost daily and both sides are always looking for new ways to capitalize on the excitement that is Ole Miss football.”

Everything the band does is scripted before a game, but there is also constant communication with the press box for the times

when the piped in music fills the public address system.

“It doesn't always go perfect, but it does have a pretty good flow,” Dale said. “Ole Miss Athletics considers the band to be a big part of the game-day experience and just elevating the fans. They appreciate what we do, and it's a big plus.”

The band is located in a new part of the stadium, close to the newly enhanced North End Zone.

Dale said it was a great place to sit, and how it shapes the band with a natural curve.

“I think the band looks and sounds good. There are some components that are a little bit difficult, just getting up there because there is no direct field access,” Dale said. “It does take some time and it's heavily crowded through the one or two staircases that are up there for us to get up. Also in the middle of the day, the position of the sun can be a little bit tough. However, athletics has been terrific. They have bought us all the band students really good looking Nike hats to wear and shield their faces a little bit. They buy whatever, however many bottles of water we say we need in a day. Sometimes we will go through 1,000 bottles of water for the band on a game day.”

There are times when a fan would like the band to play a specific tune but most of the interac-

tion is very positive.

“They appreciate what we do.

As long as the atmosphere is right, they participate with our cheers and stuff, so it's neat thing to see,” Dale said. “One of the best moments I saw that happen is when we played pre game this past year at the Sugar Bowl. Just the way the Superdome lit up with the Hotty Toddy cheer and Ole Miss fans really getting behind the band at that moment was pretty remarkable.”

The band plays the same halftime show two times, and sometimes three in a row. The Pride of the South was unable to play at halftime of the Wofford game due to a lightning threat, so the same James Bond routine was played for both Alabama and Georgia.

Dale said that for the Auburn game, there will be a Halloween based show.

“You will hear a couple of classical sounding things but you will also hear Thriller by Michael Jackson. The formations on the field will be Halloween themed,” Dale said. “For the homecoming show, we did something different. We featured the Rebelettes toward the student section and played a very contemporary, Latin sounding show by an artist called Pit Bull. It was called Fireball.”

The students in the band do offer up suggestions for the halftime routine, but Dale said every-

preserving an important part of the past that holds value with many of the supporters.

“Well, I think it’s a good thing; it’s a mighty good thing,” Theodore said when asked how he felt about the efforts being undertaken to preserve the building. “I’m willing to do any-

thing I can to come out and support it. This is history for us. This is a beginning. So you never wanna destroy your beginning.

When you leave, you wanna leave a mark.”

Ruby Kelley joined the school as a first grader in the late 50s.

“There’s a lot of people in this community,” Kelley said. “Several of the young people need extra tutoring and this is a place that we have set up for that. This is also for the community to

There are many different obstacles to go through to get clearances and permissions to play the music,” Dale said. “A lot of times, you have to deal with a lot of different contracts, a lot of different checks to be written to be legally arrange and then perform. The James Bond arrangement was completed in May for example and the show that will be played for the Egg Bowl and Georgia Southern will be a tribute to recently passed artists such as David Bowie, Maurice White from Earth, Wind and Fire and Prince.

“That was a little difficult getting clearance on that music, especially Prince,” Dale added. “We were able to get something for one his songs.”

There are currently 315 members of the band, and that includes the Rebelettes, who are always with the band. The biggest band Dale was a member of when he was in school was just under 300.

“That's kind of where we stay these days is just over the 300 mark and that's a good size band for Ole Miss,” Dale said. “Mississippi is just a different place. We don't have a metropolis like Atlanta where the University of Georgia is just an hour out. And we don't have a 40,000 student campus. We also 15 community colleges in the state all with huge bands and another SEC school in the state and another Division I football school in the state, so the fact that any of us have a band bigger than 200 is pretty remarkable.”

On a game week, the students spend about 25 hours working on their craft. Dale said the students love Ole Miss and they love being a part of things.

“Their morale is delicate, but from looking at them, you would never know that just because they represent this university so professionally,” Dale said. “I'm blown away everyday by our students.

lows and other items. They will also be using the super-cooled liquid to make ice cream that will be served to the audience.

Visitors will have the chance to undergo a literal hair-raising experience with electrostatic generators that are capable of putting out 10,000 volts. A stage show featuring a bed of nails, magnets, mirrors, optical illusions and more will also be a part of the fun. There is even a kids’ costume contest. Doors open at 7 p.m. and festivities will last until 9, and the event is free and open to the public “We started this in 2007 when I had this idea of doing something fun for the public, and this just seemed like the perfect opportunity,” said Marco Cavaglià, an assistant professor in the physics department who has been with the event since its inception. “It was a success, so we hold it every year.

Our students and colleagues help us out so much, plus it gives us an opportunity to dress up in costumes.”

Also taking place Friday night is Oxford University School’s Halloween Carnival. The carnival is a fundraiser for the school, and all of the games and activates will operate on a ticket system. Tickets will

cost 50 cents a piece and most activates and games will cost a varying number of tickets to play. All proceeds raised go to benefit the school.

Some of the activities include a cakewalk, a giant nose that kids can pick candy and prizes from, pony rides, a haunted maze and much more. Kids will even get visits from a fortuneteller and Count Dracula himself. Food will also be available for purchase through the ticket system. The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and will shut down around 7:30.

Magnolia Montessori School will be holding their own fundraiser Friday night at the Old Armory Pavilion called Historic Halloween.

Admission for children over the age of 2 is $10 a person. Children under 2 and parents will not be required to pay admission. Local band The Wilburs will be performing and Yalobusha Brewing Company will provide beverages for the adults in attendance.

Games and activities include pumpkin painting, a cupcake walk, face pointing, a mini archeological dig, bouncy slide, photo booth and more. Food will also be available at the event and family-friendly costumes are encouraged. The accounting I do here in my office for my clients is forprofit. If you’re showing a profit in a government entity, it means you’ve leveled too many taxes and have more than you need. You want to break even rather than turn a profit. In this job I see reviews and summaries of people’s financial lives, financial statements, W2s, things like that.

Working in the school, I was elbow deep in managing the accounts payable. It was a chance to see the other side of accounting and be involved in the process rather than just the outcome, if that makes sense.

And on the personal side of things, the people I worked with there were just great. I still have friends that are there who I consider life-long friends.

Satterfield Pottery becoming very popular locally

Satterfield Pottery, a unique and upcoming pottery line located in Oxford, has created the first pottery duck to sell at Lansky Brothers gift shop in the famed Memphis Peabody Hotel. Lansky’s commissioned Michael Satterfield to make an exclusive duck that can only be found in their shop. Along with his sister, Tara, Michael Satterfield started the pottery business in May, 2012. The brother and sister duo create custom dinnerware and home décor.

Michael Satterfield graduated from Delta State University with a degree in sculpture.

He later went on to study at Ole Miss and received his Masters of Fine Arts in sculpting. Originally from the Mississippi Delta, Michael Satterfield grew up on his family’s farm.

His studio gallery out in Taylor is housed in an old barn that he converted. In the future, he wants to plant a vegetable garden and wildflower fields to add as attractions to his gallery, as well as a music and arts festival. Also known for his ornaments, he hopes to host a children’s pottery workshop around Christmas.

Some of his bestselling pieces are his free forms, which incorporate his sculpture background, and are his favorite to make. He owns five kilns, and really prides himself on the different textures and characteristics of his work.

“Growing up in the Delta made me appreciate the distressed characteristics of the things around me and see the beauty in them. A lot of my things are symbolic of the Delta,” he said. “I did a complete dinnerware line and each year I add new pieces to that. Shops also want to carry gift items as well. Different seasons bring the demand for different pieces. Right now with football season in full swing, we can’t make enough Colonel Rebs and Bulldogs.

During Christmas our ornaments are very popular, and of course around Easter time, everyone wants a rabbit.”

One of the people who inspired him to create pottery was Mississippi’s own McCarty.

“In my high school, pottery

classes weren’t offered, but I was always creating, always staying late after art class. I was born an avid creator,” he said.

Around 15 or 16, his mother started gifting him McCarty pottery pieces for birthdays, Christmas, or special occasions. He applied for a job with McCarty pottery and loved it.

His own collection includes pieces made in Pistachio (cool, calming beachside hues with neutral green undertones and crisp bright colors,) Indigo (bright, bold colors with visible neutral undertones,) Creamstout (simple neutrals with an elegant design,) Gumbo (neutral tones of ochre brown and tawny clay,) Riverbottom (rustic textured finish with organic earthy undertones,) and Hotty Toddy (of course being his red and blue collection.) Satterfield can be commissioned to make any pottery piece by special request.

“We don’t just make pottery just to make it. We like to take our time and handcraft every piece individually,” he said.

“Lately I’ve been playing around with incorporating glass in the pottery, all different colors from yellow to turquoise. These pieces come out different and unique every COURTESY OF MICHAEL SATTERFIELD single time.”

When he’s not behind the Michael Satterfield and his sister Tara make several different pieces of pottery. The business was created in 2012. potter’s wheel, he loves to spend his time playing in a band or with his daughter. He lives for camping and being outdoors, anything having to do with nature. Growing up he lived near the Mississippi River and loved to collect driftwood. Satterfield still enjoys all forms of creating — sculpting, woodwork, and photography are his favorite mediums — besides pottery. He gained experience by teaching pottery to elementary and junior high students. Satterfield also worked as a ceramic artist and instructor for the Oxford School District and established a ceramic program, known as “Bolts” for the Oxford School District. One day he hopes to return to Ole Miss as an art instructor.

Rebels, Tigers headed in two different directions

I

t's been two years since Auburn last visited Oxford to play Ole Miss at VaughtHemingway Stadium. Two years ago, both teams were ranked in the top five.

The Rebels were 7-1 heading into that game on Nov. 1, having been defeated the week before 10-7 at LSU. Auburn was 6-1 with its only loss coming at the hands of a Mississippi State team that ended up being ranked No. 1 in the nation that same week.

The 2014 season was the first big step into the stratosphere for coach Hugh Freeze and his staff. Not long after the Tigers left Ole Miss, they took a fall from the top perch. It was a fall that stretched into the 2015 season. Auburn may have made the Birmingham Bowl last year but that's not where the fan base expected to be under Malzhan. Not two years after playing for a national title and just a season after being ranked in the top five in early November.

Ole Miss fans know the feeling about falling from the upper levels of college football after this year's start. A 3-4 mark is not what a lot of people would have expected for the Rebels. Even with a tough schedule, many pegged a 9-3 or 10-2 mark on them. Ole Miss has lost back-to-back games under Freeze for the first time since TURN TO REBELS PAGE 24

Man in the Middle Skidmore holds things down for OHS line

Colton Skidmore is the best senior center in the state of Mississippi. His selection to the annual Mississippi-Alabama game earlier this month is a testament to his outstanding career in football, and his overall ability. Skidmore has started every single game while in high school at Oxford. Heading into his senior night Friday against Center Hill, he has 55 starts under his belt on the offensive line.

“I had never thought much about it until going into this year and I started getting a lot of questions about it. Looking back, it is pretty crazy when you think about the number itself,” Skidmore said of the games started streak that is a school record. “You don't ever think about it. You hope for a 15game season. That's all you worry about. It blows my mind to have started 50 something games.”

This year has been another good one for Skidmore, who is a rock in the middle for the now 6-3 Chargers. He's been pleased with how he's played from a pass blocking, and run blocking, standpoint.

“And not just me, but as a unit.

We've been run blocking great. It's awesome for offensive linemen to go out and just bully the guy in front of you all game,” Skidmore said. “I think we've done that well.

I love it.”

Run blocking is something Skidmore has improved on as career has gone along. He enjoyed pass blocking for former OHS quarterback Jack Abraham.

Cain has no issue flying through the air for LHS

Lizzy Cain has enjoyed the 2016 football season.

If she hadn't missed cheerleading like she did, she might have been sitting in the stands at Lafayette's William L. Buford Stadium instead of standing on the track and pumping up the crowd.

The senior has been flying through the air at football games the past two seasons. After a twoyear break, Cain returned to the cheer team in the fall of 2015.

“I missed it. It was good to be back,” said Cain, who enjoys the competition aspects of cheerleading. “It's fun. I like being in front of people.”

One of the best things about Friday nights this year is being on the same team with her younger sister Emma Cain, who is a freshman.

“I like that we get to cheer together,” she said adding that the win over Oxford was the top game of the year. “The Senatobia game was really close. The Oxford game was the best for everybody because everyone expected us to lose because we had lost four years in a row. It was a good game, we played really well.”

Besides being close with her sister, Audrey Tapp and Canton Foley are the other two cheerleaders that Cain is close

Flying through the air was the only real option for Cain. She asked coach Sandra Smith if she could be a base and Smith's only reply was a laugh. Being tossed several feet into the air isn't scary to Cain, who did say trying new things can be a little scary, and fun, all at the same time.

“I like being scared, but I hate Halloween,” Cain added. “I like it because it's a rush. It's really the most dangerous thing I do, and I'm not really a dangerous person.”

Quarterback Will Ard, a fellow senior, is the Commodore that Cain buys snacks for before all the games. Cain wasn't sure how she was lucky enough to get the quarterback, and added that Ard is a nice guy.

“He likes Reece's and he asks for blue Gatorade,” Cain said.

“He's pretty chill. We have yoga together in

four period with Ms. Deb Jones.”

Cain said that Ard was football was more of his thing than yoga was.

Cheerleading has played a key role in Cain's development as a student at Lafayette. She feels more outgoing because of cheer.

“I used to be really shy and didn't like to talk to people,” Cain said. “I'm not like that anymore.

They know I'm a cheerleader and they ask me what the hardest part about is. Stunts are hard and it's hard sometimes to always keep a good attitude because not everything always hits and people get frustrated with each other.”

Of course it's also easier on the cheerleaders when the Commodores are on a seven-game winning streak like they currently are. Look for Cain and the other cheerleaders back at home in the first round of the playoffs on Nov. 4.

Chargers host Center Hill on 'Senior Night'

With a spot in the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs secured, the Oxford Chargers are looking to improve their seeding now. Oxford hosts Center Hill in the final home regular season game of the year Friday night. There are just two more games left on the slate, and both Division 1-5A contests can help the Chargers earn at least a second-place finish in the standings.

“We were sitting there a few weeks ago talking about New Hope and Clarksdale and Lake Cormorant and we talked about how the playoffs have already started and we control our own destiny and if we wanted to have a playoff game at home, we just had to go win,” OHS coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “I think our guys have bought into that and they know how important these games are.

And this one coming up is no different. We have to win to lock up the highest seed we can possibly get.”

Oxford (6-3 overall) is in the position to finish second thanks to its latest win at Clarksdale. It was the team's fourth straight and the most impressive since beating Madison Central the third week of the season.

“I thought it was a really big win on the road. I thought they were a very complete team coming in.

Their quarterback, Terrence Humphrey, is an outstanding player and their defense was only giving up eight points a game,” Cutcliffe said of the Wildcats. “I knew it was going to take a complete team effort to win the game and we were able to overcome some mistakes and still come away with the win. That was great to see.”

Clarksdale came on short fields. The Wildcats were just 3-for-11 on third down chances, and completely unsuccessful on five fourth down chances.

In the four wins, the Chargers haven't allowed more than 13 points in any of the contests.

“We were 50 percent on third downs so I think if you combine that they were 3-for-16 on third and fourth down, I think that was a huge part of the game,” Cutcliffe said. “We did run the ball well and

Cutcliffe felt like he legitimately had “seven, eight, nine” guys that quarterback John Reece McClure has to throw the ball to, whether that's running backs, tight ends or wideouts.

“I just think that's difficult for people when you don't have the ability to just take this receiver out

of it and they won't have success throwing the ball,” Cutcliffe said. “I think that just makes it harder for us to defend for people.”

Center Hill is a team that likes to move the ball on the ground with the option, which triple means the Chargers have to be on their assignments and disciplined. The Mustangs are just 2-7 overall and have lost four straight in 1-5A play. Still, the Chargers can't sleep on Friday and just expect to win.

“Their quarterback is a good athlete and it's a challenge to be disciplined every play and not give up a long play with a busted assignment on defense,” Cutcliffe said. “Defensively, they have a good scheme. They have some good athletes at corner.

Friday Night Previews: Week 11 Curry's instincts have served him, Lafayette well in 2016

Speed and instincts are just two of the things any linebacker needs to be successful at any level of football.

Junior outside linebacker Brandon Curry has both traits, and a lot more, to offer the Lafayette Commodores of 2016.

Head coach Michael Fair said Curry was one of the most vocal guys on the team. Even with a host of senior starters on defense, Curry hasn't let that prevent him from leading the team in tackles with 89 heading into the final regular season game Friday night.

“He's a good leader on the defensive side of the ball,” Fair said. “It seems like he, along with all the other linebackers, get everyone lined up on the front and where they need to be. For the most part, he's been real consistent all year. He is strong and he does have good instincts.

He's not the fastest and he's not the strongest but he tends to be where he's supposed to be when he's supposed to be there.

That's what you're looking for from a linebacker at any level, the instincts to be where the ball is and he does that.”

Finding Curry on the film has been easier than not because he is almost always around the ball.

Against Senatobia, Curry struggled a little compared to his first eight games of the season, but it was clear that he wanted to let that be a learning situation at the start of the week.

“We were running five linebackers and there were a lot of people that cut back on my side. Basically when the running back cut back, he had two more people to cut back to before he got to me,” Curry said. “Other people made tackles before I did. I think I've played pretty well all year. Sometimes you have ups and downs in the game and you just have to work it out with your coaches on

Defensive coordinator Ben Ashley said the key for Curry's success has been his ability to run to the ball.

“He goes and hits it and he's pretty good at making tackles in space. That's the key, he runs to the ball and he tries to be the first guy to the ball,” Ashley said. “One thing about BJ, he likes football and he wants to be as good as he can be at it.

That's the great thing about having Hudl on the sideline, you can show them immediately where they're wrong. He's the kind of guy that's going to go out here and try to get better. BJ has a lot of foot-

Ashley pointed out that Curry did a good job of running to the ball simply because half the plays are away from him since he's on the outside.

“BJ plays hard, he plays

with a lot of passion. He wants to win and he wants to be successful,” Ashley said. “As long as you've got that going for you, it's a good fit for the defensive side of the ball. We're going to take a hit on the defensive side of the ball, but it's comforting to know that BJ is going to be back.”

The season started off well for Curry, who finished with 19 tackles against Horn Lake in the opener. He said the key to his success this year is listening to the coaches, and then reading the plays.

Curry started his football career with the Oxford Buccaneers where he played all three linebacker spots. He likes playing both outside and in the middle

of the Lafayette defense.

For Curry, it's all about making plays and helping the Commodores win games. Curry talked about the tradition at Lafayette and how this year's group wanted to bring the great tradition back to the forefront.

“We wanted to live up to big expectations. People didn't believe in us the first couple of games and now that we have everything back together, we want to go back to our heydays, go back to state,” Curry said.

“All the guys from last year were great influences. Playing behind them and learning from guys like Quin Jones, it was great being around guys like them.”

The Commodores seem to play defense like a wolf pack. Curry may lead the team in tackles, but there are a number of other players who have a large amount of tackles.

“Everyone stepped up.

We have Amani (Johnson) at defensive end and Cory (Williams) and Dillon Tyler and (Woods) (Williams). People that weren't starting last year are starting this year, we all stepped up and filled the shoes we had to fill,” Curry said. “It's a pack mentality.

2014 and the meeting with Auburn. Losing multiple games in a row is something Freeze has done a good job of avoiding with the exception of his first few seasons when the program either 1) lacked talent or 2) had very young, inexperienced talent.

This season has soured on the Rebels, and rather quickly. The losses to Florida State and Alabama stung because of how they occurred. The Arkansas loss was bitter, while last week's loss at LSU was a punch in the gut. Ole Miss was throughly beaten, from pillar to post, for the first time all season. There was little to get excited about with the exception of the first quarter. Unlike the loss at Arkansas, when things were close at the end, LSU took control in the second half and never let up. It was a mauling.

And the finger pointing, the frustration of the players, showed. It was very visible. Football was no longer fun for the Rebels.

Auburn didn't have a lot

of fun moments in 2015.

Everything seemed to be a struggle on The Plains.

That's how 2016 started off for the Tigers. A loss to Clemson in the opener and a loss to Texas A&M in Week 3 had many questioning Malzhan and his offensive approach. Even if he's not calling the plays any longer, Malzhan got the blame for the Tigers' struggles on that side of the ball. There was no quarterback to lean on, no running back to gash teams with. And a defense that seemed to be giving their all was getting worn down.

Everything changed for the better starting with the Week 4 win over LSU. The Tigers held on to win an ugly 18-13 game. LSU got rid of Les Miles because of it, and the AU Tigers took off. That win was just over a month ago. Auburn isn't even close to the same team they were coming into that contest. The offense has come alive and a defensive unit that had impressed in losses has become even more formidable.

It's clear that this year's defense isn't good enough to stop anyone. Some key turnovers have aided this year's defense, or at at least allowed them not to be labeled abysmal, but they just aren't good enough to be relied on.

Ole Miss will have to find a way to score points against a very, very solid Auburn defense if an upset is to occur. And Auburn's offense, which has become much more potent, will suddenly have to hit the skids again.

Leading the Way Mary Alex England has been key to OM's running revival

Four years ago, Mary Alex England was racing to navigate her way through the Ole Miss campus en route to her classes. The senior from Cary, North Carolina had finished up her cross country career in high school. Or so she thought.

At the end of her freshman year, England realized she needed something competitive in her life.

She needed to get out and feel a part of something. And because swimming wasn't an option at Ole Miss, England looked to the cross country team to fill that void.

“I swam everyday after school for three hours and I needed something back in my life in athletics so at the end of my freshman year, I decided I wanted to try and walk-on the cross country team,” England said. “I knew after my junior year in high school that I didn't want to swim in college. I just started to look at schools solely to go to the SEC, or a big football school. Over the summer after my freshman year, I trained and built up mileage and made up workouts by myself. I had no idea if I was getting faster or anything like that.”

England came to the tryouts, in the pouring rain, at Pat Lamar Park. This was in the beginning of October in 2013, after she got cleared by the NCAA and met all the physical requirements.

“I was going to try out on some morning and it was on a morning where it actually rained for the first time in Oxford for the past two months,” England recalled. “I ran two laps around Lamar Park in the rain. I had no idea what I was doing. I was honestly running for dear life. Coach Dawson who used to be here told me I could be on the team.”

A two year hiatus from running didn't seem to have much of an impact on England. By the time the SEC meet came around in 2013, she was up to speed and competing. She finished seventh on the team, and 76th overall in her first collegiate race. Ever since that first season, England has improved tremendously. Her times have improved, and once she hit one time, all she wanted to do was get faster.

“You don't really have time to really look back at anything,” she said.

athlete, you have to be pretty good in high school. On the women's side, it's not always so direct. She is someone who leads by example in terms of someone who works hard. She was one of the first women that ran at a high level when I was coaching the women's program my first year.

She was the first one to have a break through and show that we can have a good women's team.

She has served more in that capacity in that she kind of led the charge for the rest of our group.”

England's sister, Julia, is a sophomore member of the cross country team. She thought her sister's accomplishments were inspiring.

“I think it's pretty great with her having experience in swimming and being able to transition over to running so easily. It definitely took a lot of hard work in what she was able to do,” said Julia, who looks up to her sister from a running standpoint. “I started applying myself towards the end of my senior year and I realized that I had a little bit of natural talent and that if I kept working hard, I could probably get better.”

Up next are the SEC Championships at the University of Arkansas this weekend. The women are ranked No. 16 and looking to impress the rest of the conference with a strong finish, or a better one than the projected fifth-place finish they were tagged with at the start of the year.

“I think it's cool. We've definitely been a team the past two years but this year it seems even better. Everything is really clicking is for us. All the training we've put in is really working,” Mary Alex said. “It's great to have Ole Miss recognized for their women's cross country team as well.

“We've been putting in the work and it will be nice to have that pay off at the SEC and it will be nice to compete against teams in conference. We've all bought into Vanhoy's training and just the whole program,” she added.

“We're all sleeping a lot, recovering. I think we all get along as a team and as a coach because we can joke around with each other.

Oxford's Joiner feels at home at Cal Bakersfield

Bakersfield, California may be almost 1,900 miles away from Oxford, but it felt like home to Jarkel Joiner.

The standout combo guard for the Chargers is headed to play basketball at Cal-State Bakersfield.

Former Ole Miss head coach Rod Barnes leads the Roadrunners, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. The 6-foot-2 Joiner, who is regarded as one of the state's top players, felt the most comfortable, and at home, at CSU Bakersfield, members of the WAC. There is more than a hint of the South on the Bakersfield.

Taze Moore, who helped show Joiner around this past weekend during his official visit, is just one of the back-home connections.

“He's from Southaven, so we already knew each other,” Joiner said. “It just made me feel comfortable.

He took me in like I was his little brother. We have a guy from Alabama and one from Memphis. It just made me feel at home, like a little Oxford out in California. The coaching staff is pretty much from the South.”

Bakersfield is located about an hour and a half away from Los Angeles.

Joiner flew into Bakersfield but flew back to Memphis out of Los Angeles. Joiner said that the Roadrunners winning 24 games last year and making the Big Dance had “a little factor” in his decision. The main thing Joiner was looking for was to feel wanted.

“I wanted to feel how my relationship was with the coaching staff. Coach Benjy (Taylor) came here a lot and Coach Barnes,” Joiner said. “They made me feel like I was wanted, like I was their main, top priority. I got to meet with their president, Dr. Mitchell, and there aren't too many college visits that you're going to meet the president. That made me feel special.”

Oxford coach Drew Tyler was glad that Joiner had options in the process.

“My job as his coach was for him to have options and he had a number of other really good universities where he can get a good education and play the best basketball in the nation,” Tyler said. “Going

into this whole process, being offered and then going on visits, you want to be wanted. You want to hear that and you want to see a staff show you're wanted there and you have to have a good feel for it. I know Jarkel's parents want a coaching staff to be the parents away from and

they feel like that with California Bakersfield's staff.

They like the Rod Barnes they see in the coaching box and they like the Rod Barnes they see away from the court. At the same time, there is a connection with Dr. Thomas Wallace as Vice Chancellor there, that he's going to help de-

velop the whole Jarkel, the student, and the athlete.”

Barnes recruited Joiner to play both guard positions. He has the ability to handle the ball like a classic point guard, but he also has plenty of ability to score, both as a shooter and a driver.

“I think they're going to

maximize my strengths and then work on my weaknesses as a I grow into college,” said Joiner, who averaged 30.1 points per game last season for the Chargers.

New Mexico State was the other team that Joiner seriously considered, or got close with, during the recruiting process. He ended up with almost two handful of offers, but Bakersfield always felt the best. Joiner plans to make things official Nov. 9, the first day basketball players can sign with a school. It comes a day after the Chargers open up the 2016-17 season against Calhoun City.

“I didn't feel any pressure if I did wait to sign after the season, but it did take a load off my back,” Joiner said. “I feel at peace with my decision. No pressure, just able to focus in on the season.”

Oxford has advanced to play in the MHSAA Class 5A state tournament the past two seasons, but Joiner is looking to do even more his final year under coach Drew Tyler.

“I just want to take this team all the way to the state championship. I want to win, I want that gold ball and I want Coach Tyler to have another ring on his finger,” Joiner said.

“I want this team feel like we did it with expectations lower on us, that people didn't believe in us.”

The Chargers do have a lot of potential with Joiner, and Terry Williams, in the backcourt as well as several incoming players.

Joiner spent the entire summer playing AAU basketball against some of the nation's best guards. He also liked the way the team has worked in the practices leading up to the season.

“We play harder. We're all joined together as one.

Everyone has a big part in this,” Joiner said. “I feel better and I went up against guards I wouldn't see around Mississippi. I feel like I got much better as a player, physically and mentally. I think I'm smarter as a player.” john.davis@journalinc.com Twitter: @oxfordcitizenjd

Oxford swim teams ready to roll at state meet

Anna Dennis is focused on her final time in the pool as a member of the Oxford High swim team this Saturday. Dennis will compete in the 50 freestyle two weeks after performing at a high level in the Class II north state meet. Dennis finished her event in under 27 seconds, which really pleased her head coach Robert Gonzalez.

“I'm really excited. I've gotten a lot better this season, and throughout my career,” Dennis said. “I'm hoping to end on a really good note.”

Dennis felt like her mindset was different compared to other seasons even if she didn't feel any differently physically.

“I really wanted to push and do everything I could to drop that second,” she added before talking about the rest of the team. “Everybody has really improved and it's been really cool to see. They've got a bunch of sophomores that are going to grow up and get a lot better. Everybody on the team is pretty young.”

Thomas Hoskins, who is one of the 16 OHS swimmers traveling to the state meet, felt like team improved compared to last season.

“Their strokes have gotten better and times have gotten faster, especially me.

My strokes are totally different now because of Robert,” Hoskins said. “I'm a lot more confident than

“I wouldn't say we were just a passing offense, but I felt more comfortable in a pass set than I did in a run blocking standpoint,” Skidmore said. “But there is no better feeling than to go out in a game and just have your way with the guy in front of you and run the ball. When you have two 100-yard rushers, it's an awesome feeling.”

A lengthy career didn't go unnoticed when it came time for this year's All-Star to be selected. For Skidmore, making the annual roster was a dream come true.

In the relays, the splits have improved, and Hoskins felt like the times would reflect an improvement. Hoskins is on the 400 freestyle relay. The girls' 200

and 400 free relays are seeded the highest for both OHS teams.

Hoskins never stopped swimming after last season compared to the year prior when he took off nine months.

“This year, it's been non

stop through the summer and after the last high school season. I don't feel just way stronger than at the start of the year, but I've definitely gotten a lot faster,” he added. “My times have gotten a little better every meet. It was just be-

cause of swimming all year and not taking a break.”

Tupelo is the site of this weekend's state meet, and the pool is celebrated by the swimmers for how fast it is. Hoskins added that he liked how cold it was.

“It's the best pool in the

state and it is a lot colder than any other pool we have, so it affects how you swim. It wakes you up,” Hoskins said. “They also have the fancy blocks.”

“I was definitely excited.

Growing up, I always watched the MS-AL game. I made that a goal of mine,” Skidmore said. “From my first varsity game, I made that a goal to play in that when I became a senior.

When I got the news that I had finally made that, it was awesome. It just opens up a lot of opportunities for me I fee like. I just want to go and have a great week of practice and a great game and try to better myself against some awesome talent.”

Oxford football coach Chris Cutcliffe said enough can't be said for what Skidmore means to the team. He has a great personality to be a leader, Cutcliffe said, and

his games played streak only enhances that fact.

“Everybody is going to look up to him. He has played really well lately. The past few weeks we had run on average over 300 yards per game and he's been right at the heart of it anchoring the offensive line,” Cutcliffe said. “I think he's played his best two games the past few weeks. That's been really great to see.”

Skidmore is a very good student as well in the classroom with a grade point average of 3.3. Cutcliffe has never taught him but he's also heard from other teachers how well he does.

“He doesn't ever get in trouble and I always hear

from all the teachers about him as a person and student and they all enjoy having him in class,” Cutcliffe said.

This coming winter, Skidmore is set to play basketball for the Chargers. He loves hoops and it's a sport he has been a part of in a lot of ways over his time in high school.

“I've been missing since I stopped playing. I played seventh grade and then I stopped because I wanted to make sure I got into the weight room because I wanted to play varsity football my freshman year,” Skidmore said. “I wanted to come back when I got into high school and I've been to almost every game since

I've been in high school. I was with the team a lot of the team and I have lots of buddies on the team. The only thing that's really changed is practicing and sitting on the bench and on the court. I love basketball, it's an awesome sport to play. It's a really fun game and I love playing it.”

Oxford basketball coach Drew Tyler is very glad to have Skidmore back on the team, and to use in games.

He raved about how coachable Skidmore is.

“He has that seniority. No pun intended, but he carries weight. He has leadership qualities and through his performance in practice, and in games, he's been

around our program,” Tyler said. “He's been around our program from a support staff and the No. 1 fan at times. His feet and his hands have gotten to a point to where he can help us on the basketball court.

He can help us around the goal with his frame and size.

His intangibles help us do things that other kids don't like to do, like some of the physical work that has to be done on the offensive and defensive glass. He'll do that for us. Colton is a high school senior that carries himself as someone who is a lot older.”
