Fantastic Boost Regional brings out fans to help local economy BY JOHN DAVIS OXFORD CITIZEN

Grills started early Saturday morning at Oxford-University Stadium. Well before the Ole Miss Rebels and Tulane Green Wave really got going with warmups, fans in both left and right field were out and about, and ready for the second day of the Oxford Regional. A day after dodging rain drops and suffering through a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Utah, Ole Miss fans were back in the stands, ready to pull the Rebels through the loser's bracket. Wins on the baseball diamond aren't the only things to come out of the weekend.

From an economics standpoint, regionals are always positive for business owners, and the area as a whole. Ryan Miller, the Chairman of the Board for the OxfordLafayette Chamber of Commerce, was planning on attending the regional and pulling the Rebels through. “Any time there is an event that brings a national spotlight to our community, by in large, even though there have been instances in the past that we've had negative attention for a variety of reasons, there have often been great opportunities for this city to show who it really is,” Miller said. “I think this baseball regional is another opportunity to do that. The past

regionals that we've had, the past super regionals, you have seen thousands upon thousands of people flock to this city.” Miller has attended as many of the past regionals as possible, and a visit from Maine in 2005 is one he will never forget. “I don't know what numbers Maine draws to its baseball games, but I would venture maybe a couple of thousand people a year. They have this team show up and they see the amount of people that were jam packed into this city for that regional,” Miller said. “Maine didn't fare too well in that regional, however, the Ole Miss, Oxford, Lafayette crowd, adopted

them as their second team. Every one liked the Rebels, but they also liked the Black Bears that weekend. I remember reading stories about those guys going back to Maine saying they had never experienced anything like that in their life.” Just over 10,000 fans showed up for Friday night's contest with the Utes. David Calhoun was one of those who attended. Calhoun, who helps operate and manage Oby's, said he saw an increase in business on Thursday starting with lunch and then that increase at dinner. “We also had a great (Friday) evening as well,” CalTURN TO REGIONAL PAGE 5
