Technology is growing and changing every single day. Being a full-time teacher can make it hard to be able to keep up with technological advances and software, especially when you are expected to use some of that technology in your classroom. That’s where Stephanie Stallings comes in. Stallings trains teachers from every school in the Oxford School District on how best to use the technology provided to supplement their curriculum. She does such a good job of it that she was selected as the 2016 OSD Employee of the Year.

CHANING GREEN: How long have you been with the Oxford School district?

STEPHANIE STALLINGS: I have been at the Oxford School District Since 2008. I was a teacher, and then this is my third year as one of the instructional technology coaches. I came here as a teacher. I began

One to One. Meaning, starting with grades seven to 12, all of our students have a MacBook. In our lower grades, we have laptop carts and iPads. So, the idea is for teachers to actually use that device in their classroom beyond a substitution. We want them to research more, do project-based learning and showcase that with their objectives.

Teachers know their content, but we don’t always know the best tool to go along with that lesson. So my job is to help find those tools. We give teachers a tool box, supply it with a ton of tools and then we go in and train them on those tools so that they can go in and take those tools back into their classrooms.

my teaching career in 1998 in Senatobia. I was there 10 years. I’ve always loved computers, but I also like science. So I taught science. I actually have a secondary education degree in biological sciences. I taught that for nine years. We used to have curriculums called career discovery and computer discovery. Those changed and went more towards what became informational communication technologies, which is ICT, and is, I would say, the high school equivalent of computer applications. We started teaching that at lower grades. Kids today are more digital than older people. Once ICT came in, I really liked the curriculum. I decided that was what I wanted to do, so I went and got the license to do that, and that’s where I went.

You don’t want to have to be reactive, that means we haven’t done what we should be doing. We like to plan, prepare and mitigate.

If we’re doing that well, the rest takes care of itself. So a lot of my duties are making sure that the university is prepared in terms of planning. We meet state and federal guidelines in terms of mitigation plans and business continuity plans. I have a sound emergency operations plan. That includes all of the basics of what to do in case of fires, tornados, any kind of natural event, building evacuations, active shooter plans, anything of that nature. All of this is driven federally as well as on the state level. Then of course, we have the planning for football games, special events and any large gatherings on campus. All of that is prescribed as well.

Barb Russo was recently brought on as the emergency management coordinator for the University of Mississippi. The Staten Island, New York native has a Ph.D. her field and has spent the last 20 years practicing and teaching emergency management. She describes herself as a “pracademic,” a person who spent years examining their profession from an academic standpoint while also remaining an active practitioner. With less than five Ph.D. programs in her field available in the country, and her being a member of the very first class of the first program of its kind, this is an uncommon thing the world of fire and emergency management administration.

CHANING GREEN: What is your job description here?

Charles Ivy is one of the most reliable city workers. He's been on the job for 28 years, without a day missed for vacation.

Ivy has seen a lot of change during his time with the city

Early in the morning, before most people in town are out of bed, Charles Ivy is at work getting ready to perform his duties for the city of Oxford. Ivy has worked for the city as a member of the public works department for the past 28 years. To Ivy, the time has flown by. He came to work for the city thanks to a couple of friends that were employed in the city.

Ivy wanted a city job because he was looking for benefits besides a pay check.

After some great recommendations from those friends, and supervisors who knew how hard Ivy worked, he was hired and the rest is history. Ivy started under Jack Tidwell and he's worked under a number of

different supervisors, a total of seven in all. Amberlyn Liles, the Director of Environmental Services for the city, has never seen Ivy miss work. Late last month, Ivy had 2,000 hours of vacation time, an amount that likely only increase before an hour is ever used.

“If every employee was like Charles, it would be much easier to come to work everyday. He is super dependable. If you ask him to do something, there are no questions asked,” Liles said. “He's always 'Yes, ma'am, I'm on it.' He's just a good guy.”

Ivy knows the city roads like the back of his hands.

He can navigate the large garbage truck into narrow spaces, and Ivy is keenly aware of the traffic pattern.

“He knows the ins and outs of the city. Not only does he work full time dur-

ing the week, but he's one of the first guys we recruit for the Double Decker crew which we run for 36 hours,” Liles said. “It's not straight, but it feels like it. He can go harder than some of the young guys.”

There are weeks that Ivy works every day. Because Oxford has grown so much, front end loaders that lift bins of trash in and around businesses, are picked up on the weekends.

“We rotate out the three drivers, but football game weekends, Double Decker weekends, big baseball weekends, we usually have to run two drivers since it's so much for one,” Liles said.

Ivy is amazed at how much the city has grown.

Everything he learned at the start of his career has changed due to the growth.

Ivy started on the back of the garbage truck, and he

remained there for 10 years.

He likes driving now, and said that's the spot he's going to retire from.

“The toughest part of that job was when we had those old trucks,” Ivy said. “We had a five speed, straight stick. Now they make it so easy, anybody can do it. Really the hardest thing is when the students leave and then come back. You can get in places easier and you get used to that and then it changes again. I go to Old Taylor Road early in the morning because you can't get in and out of certain places. When the students are gone, happy comes to you.”

There are three employees that started working together back in the late 1980s. Ivy said they are the “older guys” that were hired

by Tidwell. Ivy said he tells the new guys about all the

stuff they went through. His wage back then: $4.18 an hour. Now, Ivy has a good pension that will only continue to increase the longer he stays.

A day's work for Ivy starts at 4 in the morning. He makes all the coffee in the office. He works straight until 2 each afternoon. In the old days, a shift started at 5:30 and lasted until 2:30 p.m.

“I love it. I've been doing that for a long time. If I wasn't doing it, I probably would miss it,” Ivy said. “I see Oxford when it's quiet, and I see it when it gets busy and real noisy. Football games are very busy.”

There were times that Ivy could run his route in three hours, and then spend the rest of the time working on the vehicle or around the facility. Now, almost every hour at work is spent col-

lecting. Monday and Tuesday are the two busiest days to collect. Ivy used to have Wednesdays off. With the rotation, an off date may occur on a weekend. If he does work on the weekends, it may only be for a few hours.

It's no surprise to find out that Ivy started working when he was young. Lloyd G. Oliphant & Sons Paint Company was the first place he started to garner a pay check. He also worked for C.M. Lawn Service. He also worked at Captain D's for 14 years. Ivy grew up on Fudgetown Road about two miles from where Yellow Leaf Church is located. The Oxford Park

Located behind the main building of North Oxford Baptist Church is the Family Life Center.

Among other things, it houses the gymnasium and the office of North Oxford’s Associate Pastor of Family Ministries David Bodenheimer.

Bodenheimer, or, as all of the children know him as Bodie, has been with the church for over 20 years.

Currently, his spacious office is crammed with boxes and boxes of snacks, utensils and decorations, all in preparation for North Oxford’s annual vacation Bible school.

The theme of their VBS this year is Submerged.

Bodie said the point of the theme is to help kids learn to fully immerse themselves in the love of God. He said that they want help kids understand that it isn’t about the religion, but the personal relationship they build with God and how that can transform them.

Every year, North Oxford’s Vacation Bible School draws anywhere from 200 to 300, sometimes even more, children from around the area.

They keep about 80 teachers on staff during this time to accommodate all

the kids, and at least 20 other adults help out with things like snack time and making sure everything stays orderly. It’s quite an operation and one for which Bodie is the last to take all the credit. He said that while he is the overall person responsible, his main job is get in front of a few hundred kids and act silly and make sure everyone is learning and being taken care of. He said it is the people behind the scenes making sure every kid has something to eat, that all of the needed materials are ordered, that every child is present and accounted for—those are the people that keep the program afloat.

“Lori Bray, she’s our children’s coordinator and VBS director,” Bodie said.

“She in turn has surrounded herself with some

ladies that are highly organized and highly motivated, most of them mothers. They do everything. It’s all only happened because I didn’t try to do it myself and control it all. I couldn’t do it. I don’t have those skills, but they do. They just blossomed.

They really shine every year.”

Bodie is originally from North Carolina. He met his wife while they were both teaching at a summer camp in Alabama. They realized they were both in seminary at the same institution. The pair fell in love, got married and moved to Tennessee for five years. They later found themselves working in Budapest, Hunhary where they would live for four years and have both of their children. They realized they wanted to rear

their kids in the United States. Bodie’s wife had family that attended North Oxford. The two of them relocated to Oxford and have been working at the church ever since.

“Most of the time I have to pinch myself when I think about the fact that I get to paid to play with kids,” Bodie said. “It’s my gift and my heart and I’ve just been fortunate enough to grow into that ministry. Some people may think I’m weird, but kids are weird too.”

North Oxford’s vacation Bible school begins Monday, and goes through Friday.

County holds comprehensive planning meeting

Thursday evening, around 50 citizens of Lafayette County met in the auditorium of the Oxford Conference Center for a comprehensive planning meeting. The purpose was to engage the public in a discussion of how best to steer the development of Lafayette County over the next 20 to 25 years, with members of the community voicing their opinions and concerns throughout the process. This is the third meeting of its kind, with two more to be held in Yocona, Taylor and in the College Hill area in the coming weeks.

Kevin Frye opened up the meeting by telling everyone that Lafayette County is the fastest growing county in the state, and that a plan like this is necessary in order to make sure that growth is manageable.

“The city [of Oxford] has done a great job in updating their 2037 plan,” Frye said. “That is soon to be finalized and rolled out, so we need to play catch up, I think. We need to make sure that what we’re doing is keeping with sound principles. We need to make sure we’re planning ahead for a community that, whether we like it or not, is going to look very different 20 years from now.”

Planning firm Slaughter and Associates was hired by the county to help form the comprehensive plan.

Mike Slaughter took the stage next to begin going over the plan that consisted of several parts.

While he was going over the different aspects of community living that his firm wants to make sure they address in the plan, he welcomed input from everyone in the attendance. CEO of the Chamber of Commerce Jon Maynard frequently joined him on stage to help answer questions and concerns.

The different parts of the plan focused on education and workforce, hospital and health care, housing

and residential, commercial development, parks and recreation and open space, transportation and public safety.

“In summary, a comprehensive plan is a statement of county policy,” Slaughter said. “We want to give the county a document that is a written policy with their aims, ambitions and desires. When I say ‘their,’ I’m including you as citizens. It’s guide to decision making, as opposed to your planning commission or board of supervisors making decisions without a solid foundation. ers work on their objectives, but tie in what I had to teach with what they had to teach.

I would do that with an English teacher or a math teacher and so forth. So we took that idea, being a One to One, it’s now trying to get these teachers to say, “Okay, now that we have these devices, we can do more than paper and pencil.”

GREEN: Do you miss teaching?

STALLINGS: It’s a mixed feeling. I like what I do.

Teachers and students are totally different. I do miss it.

My last class that I taught are now seniors. I miss seeing my students. I miss being able to joke with my

agement administration. An event happened at an institution I was at, Wayne Community College. A lone gunman came in and shot and killed a former colleague of mine. That was kinda my impudence to get back to practicing. I felt I could do a little more good there. That was April 13, 2015. It flipped a light switch. I figured I had a little bit more to give, so I decided to go back into practicing and the vacancy here opened up and I applied.

That’s why I’ve made my transition back out of the classroom and back into practicing.

GREEN: Have you held an administration position like this before?

RUSSO: Oh, yes. I spent three years as a fire career professional in the city of Jacksonville, North Carolina.

Part of those duties as position chief of training and standards was that emergency management piece. I managed their city emergency plan, and it is very much the same as managing a university’s plan. We do function as our own city.

University, Mississippi, where the university sits, we’re our own jurisdiction.

Likewise, we function as our own city. We have our own utilities and sustainability here. We are truly our own city. So those same pieces of the puzzle apply in the same setting.

students. Students are just different. They always come in with that light bulb and the eagerness to learn. I love their energy, let’s just put it that way. I have a lot of energy myself. I taught eight grade and up and I liked that energy with the kids.

When it comes to teachers, kids are more willing and accepting of technology, and I would say that teachers are not always so accepting. They don’t always wanna go in the direction you want them to go. It can be difficult for them when we say, “It’s okay, you can still do what you love, let’s just change it up a little.”

Pedagogy gets in the way.

So, yes, I do miss some of the classrooms. I don’t really miss all the headaches, the lesson plans, the short lunches, but the kids are GREEN: What did you study in school?

RUSSO: My undergraduate work, believe it or not, was in criminal justice. I started on that side of the house. I was teaching and coaching at an institution that is no longer open up in northern Wisconsin. I was at baccalaureate service, and this is where I jumped over to the dark side, or left the dark side, however you look at it. We were coming out of the baccalaureate service and you know how people talk about hearing that freight train sound with a tornado? It wasn’t like that at all. We came out and you feel the barometric pressure drop, and you could feel a 20 degree temperature drop immediately. We come out and the sky’s darkened. It was like it had gone from day to night instantly. The tornado just ripped through town right in front of us. Within five minutes the volunteer fire company is out, chainsaws going, the whole nine yards.

I was so impressed with how quickly they jumped into service. So I joined their fire department as a volunteer.

They trained me. I became the first woman to join their volunteer fire department in a town of 4,000. That’s when I was bitten by the bug. Now I’ve been in the fire services as a volunteer or professional for almost twenty years now.

GREEN: How does it feel to win the award?

STALLINGS: I can tell everyone that I’m flattered.

Ms. Mize, I remember when she won the award and there were a couple others, it’s overwhelming that we’ve got so many people that are deserving of this. It’s a humbling and flattering experience. I really appreciate the recognition. Too many of, we’re behind the scenes and they don’t know what we do.

suburb just outside Fort Lauderdale. I did my undergrad in Virginia at Averett University. From there, I’ve kinda been all over the place.

I landed at Oklahoma State, which is the birthplace of fire science. They also became the first place in the country to hold a Ph.D. program in fire and emergency management administration. They generated and created the first Ph.D. holders in our disciple and I came through with that very first cohort of Ph.D. holders. Now I think there are probably about four similar programs around the country.

GREEN: What do you like about this job?

RUSSO: I love the fact that, unlike the classroom where there’s a lot of predictability and control, here, everyday is something new. I’ll give you a great example. I’ve spent the last few days training up at F.E.M.A. at their annual symposium for higher ed professionals. I got a call that we ruptured a gas line out here. Ashton called me from facilities maintenance and he said, “Barb, I need to let you know that a gas line has been ruptured. Are you on campus?” And I said, “Actually, I’m in Maryland training with F.E.M.A.” I asked him how bad it was and whether or not I needed to get an alert out, because I could facilitate that where I was. Dollar General donates $8,000 to Lafayette County Literacy Council The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded The Lafayette County Literacy Council an $8,000 grant to support adult literacy in the local community. This grant is part of over $7.1 million awarded to more than 900 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves.

The Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) program provides one-on-one coaching in reading and GED preparation. The ABLE program improves the lives of local adults by helping to provide them with the skills necessary to pass the GED, improve their job prospects, take their driver’s license test, participate in community activities and read to their children or grandchildren, while providing support along the way.

“The Lafayette County Literacy Council is thrilled

to receive the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grant once again,” ABLE Program Coordinator said Barbara Wortham said in a press release. “These funds are invaluable to our learners and coaches. The ABLE Program has shown significant growth over the past year, and these funds will allow us to provide more resources for our learners and to train more coaches. Without their support, we would not be able to change lives for the better in Lafayette County.”

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $120 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 7.3 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

“Consistent with our mission of Serving Others, we are excited to provide these organizations with funding to further literacy and education across the communities we call home,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO. “It is always so exciting to see the true and meaningful impact the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has on both children and adults looking to improve their lives through literacy.”

Tarasque Cucina has quietly turned heads locally

A new Mediterranean inspired restaurant has arrived in Oxford. In their fifth month of being open, the owners, John and Lauren Stokes, have been overwhelmed with the support and business they have received from the community. John Stokes, a chef who has been cooking since 1996, recently opened Tarasque Cucina with his wife, Lauren, and business partner Jake Sessums. Stokes is a native Oxonian by birth, and has been trained in both French and Italian styles, while his wife Lauren (originally from Maine) does not have a background in food, but has waited tables and worked in catering. Sessums runs the YoknapaTaco Truck, which can be spotted all around Oxford.

Sessums has been in the hospitality business from Los Angeles to New York (and now MS) for 15 years.

“Jake and I found this property and thought it was too good to be true,” John Stokes said. “We wanted to do a Mediterranean cuisine-blending French, Spanish, Italian and olive oil style foods.

We opened with the idea that we would start small and slowly, mom and pop style.”

Jake and Lauren are not on Facebook because they believe that the time they spent on Facebook could be spent towards planning new menu items. They do however, have an Instagram and a website. Both agreed that they wanted to start slow but the idea of growth was always there.

Plans for the future of Tarasque include opening for dine in, starting with a brown bag policy, and then later applying for a liquor license and having a full bar. The seating in the restaurant is trattoria style, the way many Italians

“Oxford has gotten so big it’s cool to meet neighbors and get to know other people,” John Stokes said.

“That’s another goal right now for us to foster a clientele. We want to know the folks coming in the front door.”

Currently the menu features items like: linguini with shrimp in cream, spinach garbanzo salad, pappardelle bolognese, kale nicoise salad, rigatoni with sausage and peppers, homemade bread, vanilla bean panna cotta, chocolate cream puff and more.

“We’ve done no advertising and people are ordering our food. It’s so humbling and exciting. It’s awesome to see the love of the food and the appreciation of it,” Lauren Stokes said.

“We have really high standards for ourselves,” John Stokes said. “We know what the end vision will be, but we don’t want to rush anything. People

want to know about good wine, they want to know about good food, and we want to give it to them. It's our standard.”

The busiest day for pick up is on Fridays when they serve a lot of families. They have had repeat customers, and since they are only open Thursday through Sunday, the business has been steady every day.

“People might work in their yard on Saturdays, or

work around the house and don’t really feel like leaving,” John Stokes said.

“We definitely see an increase in our Landshark delivery orders on Saturthe days towards evenings.”

Tarasque Cucina is located behind Mr. Feather’s, and is considered the perfect space.

“It’s easy access for pickup orders,” Lauren Stokes said. “We wanted a smaller space intention-

ally, because we want to make it feel like you’re coming to our home for dinner.”

The Stokes’ are appreciative of all the support they have received.

“We want to say thank you to all who have dined with us. It doesn’t go unnoticed,” Lauren Stokes said.

“To have people eating your food in their home and feeding it to their kids is the absolute best feeling.”

It was a record year of giving for Oxford Booster Club t was an amazing athletic calendar year for the Oxford High Chargers and Lady Chargers. Six different teams won state championships, the most in a single year in school history. That's saying a lot considering OHS has routinely won three or four for the better part of a decade. Geoffrey Yoste was able to see all of it take place.

As the president of the booster club, Yoste sat in the stands and cheered everyone.

Fall, winter, spring, rain, cold, sunny days, cool nights, Yoste was there.

His tenure as president came to an end this past week. Tuesday to be exact. The final number, the amount of money disbursed this past year to both the high school and middle school teams, was just over $105,000. Let that amount wash over you. As many programs and athletes as there are in the school district, that's a lot of funds to give out for sure. Raising money, and finding a way to help with projects, was a labor of love for Yoste.

“Over the past 24 months, we've had huge success with the booster club and Oxford athletics. I was reminded of it at graduation when (superintendent) Brian Harvey said that the class of 2016 was the largest pre-K and kindergarten class at Bramlett ever and then it was the largest graduating class ever,” Yoste said. “They had a whole host of awards and achievements from state championships during their tenure to national merit finalists and millions of dollars of scholarships awarded.”

When the seniors that just left OHS were juniors, turf was added at Bobby Holcomb Field. Yoste was heavily involved in that project. A number of athletic teams have found a way to utilize that surface besides football and both soccer teams playing all

EUGENE, Orgeon – Raven Saunders punctuated a fantastic first season at Ole Miss by winning a national championship. The first woman to qualify for the shot put from Ole Miss ended up defeating the field competing in the NCAA Championships at the University of Oregon in grand fashion.

Saunders, who came to Oxford after starting her career at Southern Illinois, broke a 33-year-old collegiate record with a throw of 63 feet, 5 inches. It came on her fifth throw of the competition, and it came on a wet, but memorable, day.

NCAA titles are nothing new to the Charleston, South Carolina, native. She claimed the indoor and outdoor national crowns as a freshman last year at Southern Illinois University. But when this

one landed in the brown gravel pit on this particular day, she knew it was special.

She threw her hands in the air and celebrated when the display board proved to her and the 9,027 fans in attendance just what she had accomplished.

“Wow, I didn’t even notice,” Saunders said in a release from the school when asked if she knew the record she broke was 33 years old.

“One thing my coach always stresses to me: records are going to get broken, but titles are forever. So, I got the win.”

What’s more, she thought she could have thrown better.

“Technically I feel like I set it up OK, but I definitely missed it. Basically on my strike, I threw my head so the shot came off slightly early.”

Rockette announced the offer news from the Rebels via Twitter. It was the first from a Division I program.

Rockette is a speedster, who will compete next week in the USA New Balance Nationals. Rockette has competed at a high level in both football and track, including helping lead the Chargers to the MHSAA Class 5A state title.

He was a member of the 2015 All-Citizen football team and expected to do even more this coming fall.

Cutcliffe credited the help of track coach Chris Bush for making Rockette an even better athlete.

“Those guys have really developed speed through a lot of hard work in the weight room and on the track and it's really paid off for him,” Cutcliffe said.

“This was really a dream offer for him, growing up in

Oxford. That's what you're around your whole life. You look up to those players and when you get that call, I'm sure a little bit unbelievable really when you hear it for the first time.”

Cutcliffe felt like Rockette would probably have more offers by now if he had gone through spring practice instead of just a week.

He was rotated in and out the lineup during the spring game he did take part in, Cutcliffe said.

“A lot of the coaches that come around in the spring to evaluate kids come to practice and Devin was at track,” he added. “Somebody may have come with an offer if they would have seen him. He hasn't really gone to any other camps yet, but seeing how he ran, that was the best thing going for him to see what he did in person and how fast he is.”

A move to cornerback a year ago turned out to be a big bonus for Oxford's Devin Rockette. The rising senior picked up a scholarship offer from Ole Miss this past Wednesday. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds, impressing the coaching staff with his overall athletic ability.

OHS coach Chris Cutcliffe found out the Ole Miss coaches were close to offering the 5-foot-11 Rockette. They expressed how much they liked his ability, and once Rockette was able to make it to camp, everything else just fell into line.

“I found out from the Ole Miss coaching staff and Devin was thrilled and they really loved how he competed and how hard he played,” Cutcliffe said.

Harbaugh makes a stop in state for satellite camp

The Jim Harbaugh Show stopped in Mississippi on Wednesday.

If there’s been a lightning rod in the satellite camp discussion it’s been Harbaugh, the Michigan head football coach.

The Pearl High School camp, the 25th he’ll conduct in 15 states, ran from 9 to noon. He was in Mobile on Tuesday and is scheduled to be in New Jersey by nightfall.

The NCAA recently flipflopped on the legality of these events, and while things were still in doubt many SEC coaches weren’t necessarily in favor of them.

That didn’t really matter.

If satellite camps gained footing – and they have – the SEC would be a part.

While the SEC was finding its way Harbaugh was forging ahead.

Many SEC coaches said, in a tone that was not complimentary, that “satellite” is an inaccurate description of these camps, that they should be called “recruiting” camps.

Well, that’s true. High school players aren’t getting better from 9 to noon.

They’re not being graded for footwork or arm angles in passing drills. They’re not being taught how to fire low in a three-point stance.

From a high school perspective, they know this, and they’re OK with it.

Harbaugh estimated between 500 and 600 in attendance at Pearl.

“It’s almost like a pro combine,” Moss Point assistant coach Gene Harmon said. “They’ll run a 40 time, a short run time, then do some individual drills. They’ll get a chance to choose what position they want to do and go to

these position coaches. It gives coaches a chance to see them instead of just watching them on film.”

It’s also cost effective.

The Pearl camp cost participants $25 if they preregistered, about average for a satellite camp.

Harmon says Moss Point’s strategy is to encourage these camps as opposed to three-day or longer overnight camps on someone’s campus. The staff has picked out 10 camps. It lets players choose their best fit then helps get them there if they can. Harmon and Moss Point bussed to Pearl, and theirs was not the only bus on the grounds.

Last week, he took Moss Point players to a camp at Gulf Coast Community College that he estimated had 13 schools and 700 participants.

Harbaugh put a nice spin on the goodness of

satellite camps. It was a kinder, gentler version of the Michigan coach than the one sometimes seen on social media.

His was the only major college voice.

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen twice said no to interview requests, and Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze, participating in the FedEx-St. Jude Pro-Am in Memphis, did not attend.

Coaching staff members from both schools were present.

Harbaugh was dressed in a black Archie Manning Saints jersey with black sleeves beneath, long khaki pants and his Michigan camp. With players gathered at mid-field before things got cooking he took a bull horn and told them, “No one is allowed to get hurt.” In essence, if you feel tightness get out of the drill.

Harbaugh was on the move throughout the day,

at times chatting with local adults in Michigan gear who yelled out for “Jimmy,” their coach. “Half the state is for you,” one said.

Numerous other schools were represented including Jackson State, Alcorn, Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas State among others.

The goal of the camps is not to sign players for Michigan, Harbaugh said.

“So many if not all of the guys out here today can play after high school in some form or fashion.

There are so many spots for football. That’s the thing to remember. There are ways to earn scholarships, to earn financial aid.

I can’t think of any other sport that has as many spots available for postgraduate high school education in athletics like football does.”

Regardless of where coaches previously lined

up on the satellite camp issue, there appears to be a truce in play now.

The NCAA applied the stamp of approval, so now it’s jump in or get left behind.

And whether or not you want to debate Harbaugh’s intentions, the message is true. The camps can be mutually beneficial.

“We’re just our here coaching the youngsters, every coach, every school that was here. That’s what we do. We coach. Youngsters are all trying to show what they’ve got. That’s a good thing. It’s healthy, productive, fair competition going on at all levels of everything that’s happening out there. I can’t see anything wrong with that at all,” Harbaugh said.

Price-Smith talked about the significance of a win like this for the Ole Miss program.

“It’s great coming into Ole Miss and being able to have a national champion.

For her to come in her first year here and win a championship for the University, I think she’s really excited about it. She threw up that shark fin a few times. She’s just proud to be a Rebel, and I’m proud to have her here with me.”

The season is not quite over for the Ole Miss sophomore, as she will be back in Eugene to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials next month. Saunders talked about what this meet does for her in preparation for that one.

“Basically try to do the best that I possibly can every meet,” Saunders explained. “This was a great setup for going into a really high intensity championship meet. So it really sets me up for the Olympic Trials.”
