Memorial Day is for honoring those who serve the country. It’s also the unofficial start of summer. Each of the two public school districts are done with school, and many parents are looking for a place to entertain. The Oxford City Pool opens Saturday and it’s one of the best spots in town for kids to beat the heat, and stay active all at the same time.
Bubba Robinson operates the pool for the Oxford Park Commission. He has been in the role for the past 16 years, and he looks forward to it opening each May. “Summer is here, and everyone knows it’s summer when the pool opens,” Robinson said. “We start about a month ahead preparing for it, getting all of our guards in, getting the pool cleaned and all the guards trained so that we will be ready for opening day.” The pool is open Monday through Sunday starting at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the pool

closes at 5, but all of the other days, it’s open until 6. Cost is just $3 for kids all the way up to age 54. It’s free to enter for those happen to be 55 or older. There are six lifeguards on duty each shift, Robinson said. Five are around the pool, while the other helps at the front desk. “We usually hire around 15 for the summer,” Robinson added. “The attendance has gone up the last six years.
