This year's Citizen of the Year placed Oxford, Lafayette County, his family and all of mankind first. He did that right up until his untimely and unfortunate death last month in Calhoun County.

Captain Max Miller Jr., who passed away in a car wreck on April 22, was named the 2016 Citizen of the Year during the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Foundation annual meeting held at The Inn at Ole Miss Wednesday.

accomplishments of Miller, who passed away while helping University of Mississippi students transport a soap box derby car. Miller served as a Deacon at College Hill Presbyterian, and he worked on campus for many years. Mize talked about the time spent visiting others in hospitals, and being there for others in a time of need.

His widow, and son, Ryan Miller, who replaced Mize as the chairman at the luncheon, spoke as a picture of Miller, dressed in his United States Coast Guard uniform, was placed on the screen next to them.

“He would be so humbled and he would tell you that there are so many other people out there that deserve this more than he did,” Janis Miller said. “I had my first date with him in 1964. I had my last date with him the night before his accident. In all those ensuing

years, there are three statements I most remember him making.

The first was to go out and find something good you can do for someone every single day. That's the way he lived his life.

“His second, and I know it was directed at both our boys quite a bit, was do the right thing. He believed that in how he dealt with students as well,” she continued.

“The last thing was a testimony to his deep faith in Christ. It comes from Micah 6:8, which was his favorite verse in the Bible.

It says 'What does the Lord require of man but to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.' That's what Max Miller is doing today.”

Once the standing ovation ended, Ryan Miller followed his mother. He had tears in his eyes, and paused a few times as he spoke about his father.

When he was a freshman at Ole Miss in 1997, he remembered his father saying how great it would be to move from the Gulf Coast to Oxford one day.

“He told my mother, wouldn't it be great if we got to live here? The fact is we do, we get to live here and this town, this county, this community, has meant so much to family for the last 18 years. It's an honor and a privilege for me to get to live here,” Ryan Miller said. “Never forget you get to live here. This is a special place and as such, we are required to serve.

To give back to the city and county we love and to beckon others to join us. At the end of the day, you are to serve, not to be serve, but to serve. In doing so, this community will continue to grow. It will continue to thrive and we will continue to celebrate successes that we enjoy every single year. I implore you, I charge you, do something everyday to make someone's life better. The MHSAA held its annual Class 1-4A tennis tournament in Oxford last week at the FNC/John Leslie Tennis Center.

Tennis and Oxford have always gone together, and last week at the MHSAA championships, tennis was on full display at the FNC John Leslie Tennis Courts.

Mike Young of the Oxford Park Commission was one of the many who helped organize the event that featured the state's best tennis players from Class 1-4A. The three-day tournament was deemed a big success by Young, who also credited the hard work and help of Lafayette tennis coach Debbie Swindoll and Oxford's Louis Nash for the event to be located in Oxford after years being in and around metro Jackson.

“It went very well. With all the departments that helped us work to get this to Oxford, Coach Swindoll and Coach Nash, we had a great weather and a great tournament,” Young said.

“Outside of a 30-minute delay, everything went really well. The feedback I got was that everybody really enjoyed coming to Oxford.

One thing that we will definitely have to work on is our parking.

“There's not much we can do on that other than educate the people on

where they can go to park,” Young said. “That will help some of the headaches. We feel like we got people across the street fine and we took care of our schools, making sure they had great parking right here on the facility.”

The estimates for the turnout was well into the thousands. Young said the MSHAA was pleased with them being the host site.

“They basically gave us the draws and took them and did everything else,” Young said. “There were three classes, with one and two being together, and that Monday (May 9), we probably had close to 1,500 people here. We made it work and we look forward to hosting it many more years. We will hear back from them more in November, but we feel good about getting it again. What might happen is we switch out and us get the 5A and 6A site.”

No money came from the OPC in order to secure the tournament, Young said. Ricky Neaves from the MHSAA came to tour the facility and then he met with Young and the OPC. “We told him what we could do. He took it back and it got voted on. I think it was hard vote at first be-

cause the south teams didn't want to change or drive to a different location,” Young said. “But like he told us, the majority of the 1 and 2A schools are up here in the northern part of Mississippi, so it helps them out a lot.”

The new courts have been a big help for the OPC as they bid on similar type tournaments that involve the USTA. Swindoll said the entire thing was a big success and that the reviews should help garner future events.

“This wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the OPC staff, the volunteers, the umpires, it was top notch,” Swindoll said. “I've been at tournaments for 30 years. I know I'm biased because I'm here, but our staff did a great job. We had 10 people out to dry courts at 5:30, 6 o'clock. We were only delayed 30 minutes.

The way it was run, the efficiency of it, the number of courts, just coming to Oxford, it should set us up for others. Baptist halfway through construction of new hospital

On top of the new fivestory, 600,000 square foot hospital facility that Baptist North Mississippi is in the middle of constructing lies a beam covered in signatures. The names of Oxford residents, local government officials, employees of Baptist and those that are part of the construction crew are just some of the ones who took time to make their mark on the structure Tuesday.

The final beam of the fifth story, or top, is officially attached to the building that will cost some $300 million when everything is put to rest.

Construction has been ongoing since 2014, and the project will be completed in the summer of 2017, barring any unforeseen delays. The first patients can be accommodated and cared for in November of 2017.

“Our hospital will improve the experience for patients and their families and enhance the working environment for our health care providers,” said Bill Henning, the administrator and CEO of Baptist North Mississippi. “We've reached the peak of construction. It brings us one step closer to transforming health care in this region.

When completed, this facility will be unsurpassed by any other in the region.”

Jason Little, the Baptist President and CEO of Baptist Health Care Corporation, was also on hand for the ceremony. He has been involved with the project since the beginning, and he was the one who helped Henning really figure out where to go with the facility.

“Thank you for assembling here today to celebrate this milestone in the history of this health organization. It's our three fold ministry of Christ, healing, preaching and teaching, that guides our organization and what we do,” Little told the assembled crowd. “It's not the

The local hospital has been associated with Baptist since 1989. And since that point, the company has invested more than $140 million into facility, according to the information provided at Tuesday's ceremony.

“When I think about Oxford, I think this has truly been a foundation that has been built about relationships with so many people,” Little said. “There is a tremendous medical staff that has grown over the years as Baptist has invested in this community and our existing hospital, to relationships with our patients who trust us with their care and will come to us in increasing amounts as we truly realize the vision of a regional referral center. We have a relation-

There are 15,000 employees across the Baptist organization who have their eye on this project.”

Little has been told that this construction is the biggest in the county's his-

tory. There will be 217 rooms in the facility, including cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, the Baptist Cancer Center and a 24-hour emergency room.

“It will truly be an excep-

tional structure that will enable us to further our commitment and further our relationships in the community,” Little said.

Wold Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest comes to Oxford

The World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest is, for the first time, coming to University of Mississippi on Memorial Day Weekend.

Instead of Beethoven in a fancy suit sitting at a grand piano, think of a guy in suspenders excitedly cranking out an upbeat ragtime jam for a saloon full of people raising their cups and dancing. That is what the contest means by old-time piano.

The contest is divided primarily into two categories: the main competition, and the auxiliary contests. The main competition will be split up by ages. There is a Junior Division open to players ages 17 and under. Everyone above that age range will compete in the Regular Division. The auxiliary contests vary in what they entail and whom they are open to. All of these competitions except for the

New Rag Contest must feature music that was composed between 1890-1939.

The New Rag Contest will be taking place on May 27 at 4:30 p.m. and will have up to ten pianists performing. These individuals are playing pieces they have written and prepared.

After that at 6 p.m., the Piano Duet Contest is being held. It will several feature pairs of pianists performing against one another with the audience judging the winner.

The primary competition will begin at 9 a.m. with the first round of eliminations taking place for both the Junior and Regular Divisions. This will continue throughout the day, with a winner being declared around 5 p.m. There is over $5,000 in prize money being given away to different competitors.

The last competition is called the Cutting Contest, happening on Sunday. It will be judged by the audience and feature pianists going head to head until

All of the music being performed must be played entirely from memory. Associate Professor of Music at Ole Miss, and the person responsible for bringing the competition to the university, Ian Hominick said that this is to ensure the performance is a little more

unique, that each individual competitor puts his or her own unique flair into the music, while also staying true to the piece. They also must perform while wearing period-accurate clothing.

The contest was officially founded in 1975. Its roots can be traced back to the Monticello Railway

Museum in Illinois. In 1973, the movie “The Sting” starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman was released. The film is set in 1936 and was wildly successful, wining seven of the 10 Academy Award nominations it received. Hominick said that it was the film that brought back such a wide interest in ragtime.

“Up to that pint, ragtime was still around, but it had been more of a novelty thing,” he said. “The movie sparked a new interest and all of these players started coming out of the woodwork. A guy by the name of Ted Lamen, he was involved with the railroad there in Monticello, he started this festival.”

Lamen performed ragtime sets out of the back of an old caboose at the railway using an 1870s upright piano. People would show up and set out chairs in front of the caboose to listen to him play. As time went on, the performances got more popular and bleachers were eventually built and it became a festival. The event continued to grow and more performers began joining in on the fun until they were forced to move it indoors to a facility capable of seating the spectators comfortably.

LHS seniors set to graduate this Friday at Tad Smith Coliseum

There will be approximately 188 seniors from Lafayette County High School who will be walking across a stage set up in the Tad Smith Coliseum where they will receive their high school diplomas.

The graduation ceremony is set to begin at 6 p.m., and is open to the public. The graduates will be lead by a procession of representatives from every grade at the Lafayette County School District.

Each grade representative will be caring a flag dictating what grade he or she is currently in. Senior guidance counselor at LHS Rebekah Babb said that this procession works as way to motivate everyone. The kids walking get to be excited about the aspect of graduating one day, while the students graduating are reminded of how far they’ve come and how hard they had to work to get where they are now.

Many of the graduating seniors, including valedictorian Samuel Meals, have only ever attended the district. With all of the schools that make up the district residing on one campus, for some kids, they have spent their entire educational careers up to this point in one location.

Many of them will be attending the University of Mississippi, others will be moving off to join the ranks of Mississippi State and some will likely be going to colleges somewhere out across the country.

This is Dr. Glen Kitchens' first year presiding over the graduating class of LHS. The former elementary school principal has spent the last 12 years working in Water Valley and was the assistant principal at Lafayette Elementary for

seven years before that. He said that his favorite thing so far this year has been watching the students grow in the classroom and build relationships with them on a broader spectrum.

“When you’re a teacher, you only really know the 150 or so kids that you teach throughout the day,” he said. “As a principal, you don’t get to know each of those kids as well, but you get to know just a little about all of them. I love being able to interact with the full student body.”

Kitchens said he is looking forward to seeing what this years graduating class is capable of doing.

Lafayette High School will hold its annual graduation ceremony Friday at Ole Miss' Tad Smith Coliseum.

Piñon to bring sustainable food education to Magnolia Montessori

UM graduate Ben Piñon has just singed on as the latest member of the Magnolia Montessori family as the school’s Director of Food and Sustainability Programs.

Piñon came to Mississippi from his native New York after graduating with this bachelor’s degree and joining the HealthCorps, an nonprofit dedicated to giving young people the tools they need to live a healthier lifestyle, beginning in the school system. He was placed in Clarksdale during his two-year stint with program. After his time with the organization was up, he was hired as an academic mentor with the University of Mississippi. During that time, he worked with freshman students who were, for whatever reason, struggling with college life. He was there to mentor them and make sure they were provided with every opportunity and resource they

would need to succeed.

While holding that position, Piñon worked on a master’s degree in business administration, which he graduated with this past Saturday.

Piñon first heard about the position while through a friend of a friend. Director of the Montessori school Stacey Sanford mentioned the opening of the position to Daniel Doyle, executive director of the Mississippi Sustainable Agriculture Network. Doyle was familiar with Piñon’s work in the community and mentioned it to him. Piñon knew it would be a good fit for him and his overall career goals.

In the long run, Piñon wants to make a living by educating local communities about sustainable agriculture, cooking and the entrepreneurial opportunities it can provide. These educational sessions would be run through a nonprofit organization that Piñon would oversee.

Montessori will be centering on food education.

Piñon will be preparing lunch for both the children and the faulty and staff at the school, while also educating the children on the importance of being aware

of what you’re eating.

This interest in food and sustainable eating dates back to Piñon’s childhood.

His father was the cook in the family when he was growing up. They had family dinners every night and

Piñon and his siblings would assist their father in the kitchen. It was time they spent together as a family.

Since January of last year, Piñon has been working with local Food Corps members to do cooking

demonstrations Oxford Boys and Girls Club. He said that he loves having the opportunity there to work with kids and teach them about food. Though Piñon has spent a fair amount of time in front of a classroom, that is not they way he wants to teach. He wants to be able to create situations where people can learn and develop on their own, while being steered in the right direction.

“I like creating experiences for people that are going to help them learn new things, he said. “That doesn’t mean just learning to cook a recipe. When I cook at the Boys and Girls Club and say we’re making pizza from scratch, yes, I want them to learn to make pizza from scratch, but also, it’s about trying things you’ve never tried before.

Digital Divide topic of season's final Forum and Potluck

Sunday Sustainable Oxford will be hosting the last of their Forum and Potluck spring series at the Powerhouse. The theme of this potluck’s discussion is the digital divide, and the food theme is farmers market faves.

The digital divide is a term used to describe the difference in the availability of technology to certain groups of people. Some people do not have access to the internet in their home. This may not sound like a major issue, and 10 years ago it might not have been, but as society becomes more and more centered around technology, people who do not have access to that technology will be faced with consequences that will significantly impact their lives.

According to the Center for Public Integrity, Mississippi has the lowest amount of access to a broadband internet connection with only 35 percent of Mississippi residences subscribing to a

service. Rural public libraries are also struggling to provide patrons with a reliable and fast internet connections. The American Library Association states that one in three rural libraries are already at the maximum available connection speed for internet access.

“It’s important to talk about and respond to the digital divide because the further we get into the digital age, the more things like job applications, homework assignments, college applications, and basically anything you would need to progress in our society, are going online,” said Shannon Curtis of Sustainable Oxford.

“The problem in Mississippi that other parts of the nation do not always face is that so much of Mississippi is Rural. High-speed access has not reached most of these areas.”

stressed, it is just the natural progression of the use of technology in our everyday lives. But it does clearly illustrate the digital divide. Lafayette County schools do not furnish their students with laptop computers, but students, many of which live in extremely rural parts of the county, are still required to complete some assignments online.

This is not a new issue for the local area. Last month, Associate Professor with the Mississippi State University Extension Service Roberto Gallardo led a discussion in the theater of the Oxford Public Library about how the digital divide can be dealt with. The discussion was well attended by local residents who suffered from lack of connectivity. It is something that members of the community openly struggle with and feel the effects of on a daily basis.

Gov. Bryant signs controversial bill into law

JACKSON – Legislation authorizing the issuance of nearly $250 million in state debt through the sale of bonds was signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Phil Bryant.

At the time the legislation passed last month near the end of the 2016 session, Republican state Treasurer Lynn Fitch criticized the size of the proposal and the fact that it contained money for local projects that should not receive state funding.

Despite the controversy surrounding the bill, most observers believed the governor would sign it into law.

Nearly $225 million of the total included funds for major projects, such as $61.7 million for construction projects on the university campuses, $45 million

for improvements for Ingalls Shipbuilding on the Gulf Coast and $16.5 million for completion of the history and civil rights museums in Jackson.

The bulk of the rest of the bond funds will go for a litany of smaller local projects throughout the state, including several in Northeast Mississippi.

Projects in Northeast Mississippi are: • $750,000 to help with the construction in Veterans Park in Tupelo of a replica of the Vietnam War Memorial located in Washington, D.C. • $750,000 to help local governments in Itawamba and Tishomingo counties with the repairs to the Itawamba County Ridge Road that runs between U.S Highways 72 and 78.

• $150,000 to install safety lights at the intersection of U.S. 45 and U.S. 145 in Saltillo.

• $50,000 to repair lights at the Kossuth High baseball field.

• $100,000 to help with repairs to the Fulton water system.

• $300,000 to help with a cultural center in the city of Pontotoc on the Tanglefoot Trail that is used for hiking and biking.

• $300,000 for an equine center near the town of Tishomingo.

• $100,000 for the city of New Albany to be used for landscaping or for work on the Tanglefoot Trail in that area.

• $100,000 for repairs to the Chickasaw County Health Department.

• $100,000 for the Calhoun County Community Center located south of Pittsboro.

• $200,000 for infrastructure repairs in Marshall County.

• $400,000 to help with improvements to an eco-

nomic development project on U.S. 72 in Alcorn County.

• At the University of Mississippi in Oxford, $10 million is set aside for the upcoming fiscal year, which starts July 1, and $15 million is set aside the following fiscal year for a new science building.

• At Mississippi State in Starkville, $10 million of the bond proceeds will be committed to a new music building. The MSU Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine will get $4 million, while $4 million will go to a building to house the Department of Animal and Dairy Science and Poultry Science on the Starkville campus.

• The 15 community colleges will receive $25 million, with $1.8 million going to Itawamba Community College based in Fulton, $1.4 million di-

rected to Northeast Mississippi Community College based in Booneville and $2.1 million committed to Community Northwest College based in Senatobia, but with a campus in Oxford.

Fitch referred to the projects as a "Christmas tree collection of earmarked goodies." She vowed to give each project a thorough review as one of three members of the state Bond Commission. She and one other other member of the Commission, which also includes Bryant and Attorney General Jim Hood, could block the issuance of bonds for any of the proposals in the legislation.

Earlier, Clay Chandler, a spokesman for Bryant, said the governor “will carefully evaluate the merits of each project. He will vote to approve some. Others, he will not.”

Some legislators said

members of the executive branch do not have the authority to second-guess the Legislature on bond bills.

Earlier, state Sen. David Blount, D-Jackson, said the Bond Commission's role should be to determine the packaging and the timing of the sale of the bonds to garner the best deal for the state in incurring the debt.

While Blount said he does not agree with all the projects in the bond legislation, he said, “It is not the role of the Bond Commission to act as a second legislature” and second-guess the decisions made by duly elected lawmakers.

ast week, amid news that our legislature and Governor were draining state coffers like drunk sailors on shore leave, one positive development came out of our pot-holed capital. Our Governor signed a law okaying the use of gocups in a dozen Mississippi towns, those with designated “entertainment districts.” House Bill 1223 allows patrons to purchase a drink from a bar, walk out with it and consume it while sauntering down certain streets in Hattiesburg, Tupelo, Holly Springs, Greenville, Greenwood, Canton, Grenada, Starkville, Water Valley, Jackson, Senatobia and Corinth. The new law goes into effect on July 1.

Oxford would seem to be noticeably absent from this list, but then again, Oxonians have proven themselves to be quite versed in the practice of go-cups even without this law. As for an entertainment district, we already have that too. Some think it’s the city limits.

Tracing the tradition of go-cups is hazy but their origin is widely credited to the city of New Orleans.

That humidity-soaked locale came up with drivethru daiquiri stands in the 1980s. Like most liquor laws, the drive-thru daiquiri law was whacky.

It stipulated the drinks would be served in a Styrofoam cup with a lid with an un-punctured hole.

Patrons were supplied with a straw and the idea was drivers would wait until they got home to push the straw through the top and imbibe. Yeah, you right.

Daiquiris are sold in New Orleans’ movie theatres, their city aquarium, the zoo, water parks and of course, on the street.

Go-cups are also provided at every bar in town for most any drink. The city takes pride in its go-cup culture, or as it’s called,

“blue sky boozing.” And yet, for all this freedom, a recent study published by the Daily Beast showed that New Orleans didn’t even rank in the Top 15 of this country’s, “Drunkest Cities.” (For the record, the top 5 were: 1. Boston, 2. Springfield, Mass, 3.

Milwaukee, 4. Reno, Nevada and 5. San Antonio).

Since we’ve evoked Styrofoam, let’s go ahead and dwell for a moment on the question of Styrofoam versus plastic Solo cups.

Styrofoam has been discredited over the years for not being biodegradable and therefore bad for the environment. Well guess what sports fans? Solo cups are made from the same material, polystyrene, and are no more environmentally-friendly.

Solo cups are not only bad for the environment; they’re bad for cocktails.

Solos offer no protection from heat. As soon as a cocktail is mixed in a Solo cup the ice begins attacking the cup’s contents like a cancer, spreading its watery death. Halfway through a drink in a Solo cup, it’s no longer a cocktail but a smoldering fire in need of poking and another log.

A white Styrofoam cup keeps a drink cold and unidentifiable. For all the world knows, you could be drinking coffee. (Another selling point of Styrofoam: it can keep a drink hot or cold. The question is, “How do it know?”)

I applaud our elected

officials for signing this bill and congratulate the cities on the list. I can see the T-shirts, “I was Blue Sky Boozing in Senatobia,” “Go-Cup to Grenada,” “Water Valley A Go Go.” In the Big Picture perhaps this go-cup law is small beer. It certainly won’t fill those pot-holes out there. It won’t repair any of the bridges that are crumbling across this state. It won’t bring back any of the hospital beds recently cut from our state’s budget. Laws of late seem mean-spirted and serving only lawmakers.

It is refreshing, if not uplifting, to see a law passed that is for people.

Designated entertainment districts can be an asset to any town’s economy. To allow patrons of these areas to enjoy food and beverages outdoors can only make that town more attractive.

Many in New Orleans report the biggest problem with go-cups isn’t public drunkenness but litter. If this law ever includes Oxford, we would deal with litterers swiftly and firmly including loss of go-cup privileges.

Sometimes it is simply time for a cocktail but you find yourself in a spot not known for serving drinks like… Kroger, or in the shower. This law lets freedom ring and keeps the ice from melting. Indeed, the go-cup’s time has come.

Now about those bridges.

“This is not a type of music where you come in, sit down and fold your hands in your lap and be quiet,” he said. “This is like toe-tapping, hand-clapping, whooping fun type music that everybody can enjoy.”

Ingraham set to open Sinfully Southern locally

Dwayne Ingraham is taking over the world one dessert at a time. After six years as the head pastry chef of City Grocery Restaurant Group, Ingraham is giving it up to open his own bakery. Sinfully Southern will be open by Sept. 1, and is located in the new Village Station shopping center off Old Taylor Road. Ingraham describes his new project as a bakery/café that will feature desserts, but also will be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as a bar to serve cocktails.

“I’m known for my desserts, so of course every day we will feature cookies, macaroons, pies, cakes and tarts. In the evening time I will serve plated desserts, which is how I show my style of what I enjoy doing the most,” Ingraham said. “The feel of it will be a sophisticated southern dining experience, at the core of it is very simple flavors that we all recognize, but I do it in a sophisticated way. I want people to feel like they are at an intimate dinner party, talking and laughing and enjoying food and company.”

Ingraham always enjoyed baking with his mother and grandmother, but it wasn’t until his fraternity brother at the Uniof Southern versity Mississippi came back from culinary school that is piqued his interest.

“I was working at Chesterfield’s in Hattiesburg, and he talked so highly about culinary school that I decided to apply and got accepted,” he said “I was kind of wondering around aimlessly trying to decide what I wanted to do, and when I baked my first dessert in culinary school I knew that I wanted to do it for the rest of my life.”

Originally from Boothville, Louisiana, (65 miles southeast of the Westbank) Ingraham was working in Las Vegas at the time when he found out Chef John Currence was looking for a pastry chef in

Oxford. His first day was June 7, 2010, and has been in Oxford since. When he’s not cooking, he is a professional napper who loves to host dinner parties at his home. As a chef, he has to spend most holidays and weekends working, so when he does get a day off he wants to enjoy laughing and catching up with friends and in the summer has pool parties.

Ingraham’s passion is in plated desserts, but he really enjoys making custards, ice creams, and mousses. “What I like the most about desserts and pastries is that if you follow the recipe and use the same process and same ingredients every time, you will always get something pleasurable as the end result. It’s the science behind it that amazes me.”

He jokes that he is not responsible for the extra weight you might incur from eating his desserts.

Currently he is making three cakes for Ole Miss graduation, and his favorite type to make is mousse cake or red velvet cake. Ingraham has a fond memory of the red velvet cakes from his native Louisiana. Every year for his birthday his mom would get him one from a special lady that made them. In his mind he can

still taste that cake, even after all these years.

When asked what advice he would give to young chefs, Ingraham says learn your craft, love what you do, respect it, and stay up on your knowledge.

“There’s room in the industry for everyone. Everyone is caught up on being a star,” Ingraham said. “Put in the work to be proficient in the job, put in the hours and time to achieve it if it’s something that you really want.”

The local chef has competed in two Food Network shows, Cut Throat Kitchen, and Spring Baking Championship.

“I went on Food Network to prove that we are doing great things in Mississippi. I did not want to disappoint the people at home,” he said. “I wanted to be able to go home with my head held high and be proud of every dish. I also wanted people in Oxford to be able to connect with someone who has made the food they’ve been eating for the last four to five years.”

Ingraham won Cutthroat Kitchen, and was a finalist on Spring Baking Championship. He will be in a new episode of Cutthroat Kitchen premiering on June 1. His favorite part about doing the competi-

Making history feels as good as it looks for OM Rebels

A

minute, or two, before the NCAA Softball selection show started at Buffalo Wild Wings, Lynette Johnson came through the door. She didn't quite sprint into the main seating area where the Ole Miss softball players were located, but she definitely had pep in her step and in her arms as she extended them with two fists out as she approached.

Johnson had just gotten back from the NCAA's headquarters, off the university's plane, and into a vehicle. She wasn't going to miss seeing the reaction of the Rebels when they found where they would be playing this weekend.

Johnson served on the regional selection committee, which meant she knew where the Rebels were headed, even if she couldn't talk about them during the panel. Johnson wore a huge smile on her face during the broadcast. (She's worn a big smile on her face the whole season to be honest.)

Even when she was pulled one way or another by a player or coach, Johnson never broke. She didn't want to ruin the surprise.

By the time Ole Miss found out that the University of Oklahoma was the destination, it didn't matter that playing the No. 3 national seed Sooners was part of the equation. Loud screams, hugs and even a few tears were happening. Pictures were snapped, more memories saved for a team, a program, that is suddenly very, very relevant in the world of college softball.

“When I was named to the committee a year ago, this is my second of a four-year commitment, one of my comments was I'm going to be so excited when history is made for Ole Miss and I get asked to leave the room because you can't vote for your own school,” Johnson said. “I knew coming home, but I didn't know going. Obviously, the kids had a good body of work. I thought it was very fair and our committee did an excellent job on the whole bracket, including where Ole Miss is. The kids did all the work. Mike and his staff led the way.

All-Citizen Track Talent, depth proved key for Oxford, Lafayette

When you make history, and win two track titles on the same day, there are a number of contributors to the success.

In the case of the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers, winning the MHSAA Class 5A state title revolved around depth, and talent.

Over two dozen athletes were named to All-State at the meet, which means a finish of top three. Lafayette also gar-

nered success at the Class 4A meet from a team and individual standpoint as five athletes made All-State.

Chris Patton, who was named the Girls Track Coach of the Year by the Mississippi Association of Coaches two days after the meet, said to have 16 athletes earn that level of recognition, which is the most in a single season, revolved around a lot of hard work.

“It's just a testament to how hard those girls have been training all year.

To make it to state, but then to get all-

state, that's another major accomplishment in itself,” said Patton, who spent the week right after the title win replaying the day in his mind. “The crazy thing is, I'm already looking forward to next season. What can we do to be together? All of them are back except three.”

Roth, Barber make plays to lift Chargers in 5A series opener

PEARL – All Houston Roth wanted to do was let the ball rip away from his arm and into the glove of an Oxford infielder. He didn't care if Drew Bianco, Grae Kessinger or Carson Stinnett was on the other side of his throw from right field, Roth was looking to uncork things, and catch a Tiger by the tail.

His two assists were pivotal in the Chargers' 5-3 win over Hattiesburg Tuesday night at Trustmark Park in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 5A baseball title series. If Roth's throws from right in the sixth don't happen, then the game could have gone to extra innings, or worse. That was the way Jason Barber, the starter on the mound for Oxford, saw things a couple of minutes after he wrapped up his final start in high school.

“Those were huge throws. If he doesn't put those on the money and get those two outs, we could be going to extras right now or going home with an L,” Barber said.

“That was very impressive by him.”

Roth doesn't get a chance to flash his arm much from the outfield, so he was excited about the chance to do battle with some of the fastest base runners in the state.

“I knew this team is fast and like to run a lot and with a man on first, a single to the right side, I knew he was going to go third and I came threw and let it fly. It was a good one hop to Carson and a good tag,” Roth said about his first assist in the sixth.

“As much as Houston likes to compete and pitch on the mound, he likes

At the time of Roth's throws, the Chargers had already taken their two-run lead. Barber had been cruising up to that point, having retired nine of 10 prior to the sixth. It was a perfect time for Roth to cut down the momentum, and help his good friend out.

Prior to Barber getting back on track, he hit two batters and committed an error that allowed two runs to score in the second.

“He just had a rough inning. Jason, he's just a different type of pitcher.

When that stuff happens to him, you would not know that he hasn't struck out 15 batters and instead walked a few,” Roth said. “Just how he works out of it, he's just a great pitcher. I'm very proud of the way he played.”

A year ago, Roth was the Charger who earned the first win on the mound.

Today, when the Chargers resume their series with Hattiesburg, he can be the one that is on the bottom of the pile.

“I want to have that feeling, getting the third out up there on the mound and have everybody run up to me,” Roth said before talking about the Chargers' 10 hits in the opener. “I think the guys in the dugout were counting that we would have had six balls that would have gone out at Oxford. We hit the ball really, really well tonight. They have a really fast outfield and most of the outfields

that we play, those are hits, those balls in the gaps. You can't say quit lifting it because they hit those balls so hard.”

Baughman told his team they had 18 barrels on balls. Roth said a normal night is “10 to 15.”

The Chargers scored two runs in the top of the first, a single run in the top of the third to tie Hattiesburg, and then took the lead for good in the fifth with two runs. Barber led all players with three hits, and four RBIs. Grae Kessinger, Drew Bianco and Sage Mullins each had two hits for Oxford.

“It's bad we're playing at Trustmark instead of Oxford,” Baughman said with a laugh. “We swung it real well. We didn't hit weak fly balls.We hit missiles. That's

spring and those two things drove them to the title.

“I'm very proud. This was a very good group of young men and usually we're heavy on field events and this year, we just happened to be heavy on sprints,” said Chris Bush, head coach of the Chargers. “This has been a great group and hopefully they can come back and get a little more of the same action next year.

It's a very exciting feeling

and we celebrated it and we might celebrate a little more. At some time, we will get these guys regrouped and get them ready for taking the group to nationals and getting them better for next year.”

Lafayette Brandon Turnage, Xhiir Burgess, Orianna Shaw, Aja Norphlet and Breanna Holland earned the recognition of being one of the top in the state in their class.

“You don't always have that. A lot of times you show up at the state meet and people just don't have their best day,” Mikell said.

“Every person but one got a

medal and that's hard to do. Orianna had the best 400, period, out of all classes. You can't ask for much better than that. It was against good, tough competition and everybody improved. Every individual we had at the state meet had a personal best, which is what you want.

“They stood up to the pressure because it is different at the state meet,” Mikell added. “Everybody is

serious. Nobody is joking around. You go to a meet early in year and there are kids that are there to just cut up. You get to the state meet and you walk out to the line and there isn't anybody that is laughing.

Everybody wants to win.

Oxford's Cutcliffe pleased with how first spring turned out our kids played aggressively on defense,” Cutcliffe said.

“We were sound and we aligned well and we knew our responsibilities. Offensively, the thing I was most pleased with was we didn't turn the ball over. We didn't have very many negative plays at all. We did a lot of the things it takes to win football games.”

There will be a new starting quarterback at Oxford with Jack Abraham off playing at Louisiana Tech. Reps were split through the spring, and also in the game, and there is a good chance Cutcliffe plays both John Reece McClure and Zac Montgomery during the fall. Another big step in determining who the starter is comes during the summer in 7-on-7 work.

An area that was the most consistent for Cutcliffe over the course of the spring was at linebacker.

“I thought our linebackers played extremely well.

They tackled very well and got downhill, just fundamentally played well and did a great job,” Cutcliffe

A 21-point win over Tunica-Rosa Fort was just one of the positives gained for the Oxford Chargers during spring football drills. Firstyear head coach Chris Cutcliffe felt like a lot was accomplished from start to finish.

“We got to work with some young players and got a chance to see what some people could do, especially on offense where we lost eight starters,” Cutcliffe said. “We had a chance to evaluate people there. Defensively we lost a lot of players at linebacker and a couple of defensive linemen and in the secondary. Just getting to evaluate several young guys was very good.”

Scoring touchdowns against the Lions is one thing, but doing well on fundamentals is a completely different scenario.

“I thought we tackled well defensively. I was pleased with that. I thought we flew to the football and

At tailback, Hiram Wadlington had a good spring game, scoring a rushing touchdown and finishing with some catches out of the backfield.

“He's worked really hard and I think he's bigger and stronger and faster and he's

really trying to step into a leadership role as one of our returning starters,” Cutcliffe said. “I've been proud of him. We got Jaquan Webb and a couple of other track guys out, Devin Rockette, Jaquanzi Johnson, we got them out for a good week of practice after win-

ning their state championship in track, so that was good to get them out there.”

Oxford is hosting a 7-on7 tournament on June 4 and that will include 12 teams from around the area. Cutcliffe was fortunate enough to host a 7-on-

7 tournament with Ole Miss not holding one this summer due to the work being completed on the practice fields.

“They don't have places to play, so we're doing this so we can fill that void,” Cutcliffe said. “We're still going to continue Monday nights 7-on-7 with teams from around the area will come in. That's more informal. Then there is a tournament at FNC on June 21 that is being sponsored by Adidas and we're playing in that. We're also playing in the Medicomp tournament in Jackson.”

Workouts for the Chargers will begin the day after Memorial Day on May 31.

“We're getting into the last two months to prepare for the season. MSU bound Lafayette's Williams makes pledge to Bulldogs

It's been a busy spring for Lafayette's Tyler Williams. From playing center field for the Commodores, to finishing out practices under new head coach Michael Fair, the Commodores' standout cornerback has balanced a lot of different things, including recruiting.

The rising junior picked up a number of scholarship offers over the past two months. One of his first, Mississippi State, was the place he felt the most comfortable. He decided that being a Bulldog in the future was the best thing for him.

“I felt like it was the right decision, that it was the place I want to play ball at. I love everything about their program,” Williams said not long after his announcement on Monday. “I like the coaching staff. It's a good feeling. I was on board since the day they offered me really.”

Williams, who also plays basketball for the Commodores, has built a good relationship with Terrell

that sometimes they weren't supposed to win.

And they put this program in a position that will allow them to play for a national championship. You could tell by the excitement that they understood that, and it's fantastic.”

Natalie Martinez and Madi Osias are two of the senior leaders for the Rebels. They were both very excited about making history, about being on the team that will be playing in the school's first NCAA regional.

“It's surreal. We kept joking when each bracket was coming up and said 'How are we going to be able to get through this whole selection show?' Each time our heart was pounding

Williams is a tall corner at 6-foot-1, and State loves his size, he said.

“They like my speed and my ability to play man-toman coverage, my length, they said they like everything about me,” said Williams, who finished with 25 tackles, seven pass breakups and two interceptions last season for the 10-3 Commodores.

Former Lafayette coach Eric Robertson said he was excited for Williams heading to play for coach Dan Mullen.

"He is a heck of a football player. He has a very high ceiling. He definitely has the measurables college coaches are looking for," Robertson said.

"More importantly, he has the speed to play corner in the SEC. I think he can play either side of the ball, DB or WR." Recruiting didn't stress Williams out, but he did think that making a deci-

sion makes things that much easier going into his final fall with his teammates.

“I won't really have to focus on any of that stuff. I can focus on just playing ball,” he said. “Things can only get better with Coach Fair. I think he's great coach. All the players, including me, all love him.

We're really excited about next year with him.”

The defense for the Commodores changed from a 3-3 stack to a 4-3 look this spring. Williams said that the coaching staff is expecting a lot more out of him.

In between the start of fall camp, Williams will be playing with Mississippi Grind, a 7-on-7 football team out of Jackson that features some of the state's best players.

Williams is going to start recruiting for the Bulldogs, who have 11 of 13 verbal pledges from players in the state of Mississippi. Grenada's CJ Avery and Clinton's Cam Akers were two of the targets for Williams.

“Up until this point, I hadn't really let myself get excited about it because I wanted to be 100 percent

sure before I got fully invested in it,” Osias said.

“Getting to see your name on the screen is an awesome, awesome feeling. It really didn't matter where we were going. Coach said it best the other day, we don't want to get complacent about just making it to the tournament. We want to get to the tournament and win. I'm excited to get to go to Oklahoma and to play an extremely good Tulsa team and hopefully a very good Oklahoma team. All the teams in the tournament deserve to be there. I'm excited to be a part of it.”

Smith is not only making his first appearance in the NCAAs at Ole Miss, but overall as a head coach. He got close when he was at McNeese State, he said, but no cigar.

Rattay saw improvement from Abraham during spring at La. Tech

Jack Abraham dazzled and set records on the football field playing for the Oxford Chargers the past three seasons. He is looking to do the same types of things in Ruston, Louisiana playing for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

Tim Rattay, his offensive coordinator at La. Tech, knows a thing or two about playing quarterback. He did it at La. Tech, throwing for over 12,000 yards, before playing the position in the NFL for eight seasons. Rattay said it was “huge” for Abraham to have come to school in March and take part in spring drills.

“I told him that he got 15 bonus practices and that's huge in that he got 15 in the spring and you get 30 in the fall and then you go to your season,” said Rattay, who has been coaching since 2011. “He got a jump start not only on learning the offense,

but the reps of doing it.

You see that with the freshmen that do come in, they go through fall camp, they go through playing with the scout team and then when they get to the spring they've really improved. Well, Jack just got a head start on that by playing spring ball and now I expect him to be a lot better when he comes back to fall camp.”

There were a lot of good things Abraham did in order to impress Rattay during the spring. The first revolved around his tireless work ethic.

“His preparation before spring ball was impressive. The only way he was going to have a chance to run the offense was if he studied before we got to spring ball,” he said. “The quarter started on a Monday and we practiced on a Thursday. He put a lot of work in. I didn't have to spend time telling him what the play was. As soon as Coach (Skip) Holtz called the play, he

knew what the play was.

So that gave me time to spend time on the little things. That was huge.”

Abraham still has a long way to go in order to be playing in 2016, but Rattay said he showed that he as comfortable adjusting to Division I college football.

“He showed me that the moment wasn't too big for him. He did some good things in the scrimmage. He did some bad things. I saw things we can fix. I was impressed with how he came in and never thought the moment was too big for him,” Rattay said. “Experience and him starting since he was a sophomore and us having a similar type of offense is a help. A lot of our concepts, he's run before. His knowledge, his intelligence, with a lot of new kids, you spend a lot of time telling them what the play is. You don't have to do that with Jack. He improved from the first practice until the 15th,

and that's what I wanted to see.”

The next step for Abraham is to get more comfortable with his surroundings and to continue to work in the weight room in order to deal with the increased speed of the game.

“The first thing I talked to him about was foot speed, foot quickness.

When you go from high school to Division I, everyone is faster. So we work a lot with our footwork and our movement,” Rattay said. “I want him to get a little more comfortable with that. I told him to find guys to throw with and get used to the routes that we throw. The good thing is he has reps in our offense and he can go watch film of himself doing in our offense in a Louisiana Tech uniform, which I think is huge. He can study that and get better.”

Led by three event champions, a total of eight Rebels earned All-Southeastern Conference honors at last week’s outdoor league championships in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Craig Engels (men’s 1,500 meters), Branden Greene (men’s high jump) and Raven Saunders (women’s shot put) made the All-SEC first team by winning league titles. Five more Rebels were recognized on the second team by finishing second or third in their events.

For comparison, Ole Miss had one champion (Brooke Feldmeier, women’s 800 meters) and four total All-SEC recipients at last year’s SEC outdoor meet.

With a fifth-place team showing (66.5 points) this year, the Rebel men matched the 2014 team with the program's second-best SEC outdoor result. Only the 1984 squad's runner-up finish has been higher.

The distance events were especially strong for the Rebels, as Ole Miss finished 1-2 in the 1500(Engels, Robert Domanic), 2-3 in the 5,000 (Ryan Walling, MJ Erb) and third in the 3000-meter steeplechase (Erb). Engels is the first SEC 1,500 champion in school history, while Walling and Erb’s performance in the 5K and steeple were the best since the Kirui brothers (Barnabas and Martin) starred for Ole Miss in 2010.

Saunders, only a sophomore, won the 2016 SEC Commissioner's Trophy as the highest scoring individual female at the meet. She earned a whopping 21 points with her victory in the shot put Friday (SEC meet record 60 feet, 11.5 inches), a runner-up finish in the discus Saturday (184-6) and a sixth-place showing in the hammer throw (190-2).

The Charleston, South Carolina, native produced the highest SEC outdoor finish in school history in the shot and discus and was second-best in school history in the hammer.
