Case answered questions from the audience regarding their rights as business owners if they are being stolen from. He also discussed the best ways to prevent things like this from happening.

Square businesses discuss the prevalence of shoplifting

Over a dozen owners and managers of business on the Oxford Square convened in the boardroom

of the Chancery Court Building Friday morning to discuss growing concerns regarding shoplifting.

The meeting was organized by Jeff Johnson,

owner of Nella. Johnson wanted to call a meeting to discuss the crime which appears to be on the rise.

He asked around to see if he could make it happen and began working with

the Oxford Square Alliance to do so.

Mark Huelse is president of the Oxford Square Alliance. He said that a few of the people attending the meeting were not actually members of the alliance, but he said that was of no consequence.

The main thing he and Johnson are concerned with is opening the lines of communication between Square retailers in order to better prepare and protect themselves against theft.

“We want to make sure that everyone on the Square is taking steps to improve communication; that’s the key here,” Huelse said. “We want to make sure we’re talking about what we can do, what we can’t do and what we’re going to be doing as a concerted effort. That could be communicating with a group text about a suspect and making sure everyone keeps an eye out.”

Many of the shoplifters caught on the Square have usually hit other stores by the time they’re caught. In some cases, it can be hard to identify exactly what store the stolen merchandise originated from, while in others it can be much more apparent.

OPD investigator Chris Case spoke at the meeting and answered questions from those attending.

Many of the questions fo-

cused on the rights of business owners and managers once they suspect someone of stealing from them. Can they put their hands in someone else’s bag if they just saw that person stuff it with a dress? Can suspects be physically restrained? Do they have to wait for a person to try to leave the store before accusing them of theft?

Case answered each of the questions thoughtfully based on his years of experience dealing with these incidents. He first advised that stores be well equipped with visible security cameras and have adequate signage indicating to customers that they are being recorded.

If someone in a business actually sees someone put something in a bag in an attempt to steal it, that employee has every right to demand the merchandise back, and even seize it from the individual. In order to undoubtedly secure a conviction, wait until someone tries to leave the store before confronting them. Case also said that if they don’t feel comfortable with any of that, just follow the suspect out of the store, get a description of their vehicle (preferably a tag number) and then just call the police to let them handle it.

One person in the crowd said that if a store

owner did call the police, wouldn’t the officers just keep the stolen item(s) as evidence? What’s the point of even calling the police if the stolen merchandise takes months or even a year to recover? It will long be out of season by then.

Case said that the Oxford Police Department now has rules in place that only requires them to take photographs of stolen times. The merchandise will be returned promptly, sometimes event the same day.

“I think shoplifters have become more brazen over the years,” Huelse said. “I think it’s always been there, but it seems like it’s picked up a little bit more.

I think part of that is just the addition of more stores. When you have more stores, you’re going to have more activity. As the town grows, things like this grow, too.”

The thing that Case stressed the most was the importance of prevention.

This includes proper and clear signage as well as open communication between store owners. With the huge influx of foot traffic the Square is expecting for Double Decker, Case said this was really important as the crowds make it difficult to keep eyes on every single person. Lafayette choir cleans up at national competition

Last week the Lafayette County High School Choir traveled to Washington, D.C., for four days of performing, competing and sightseeing.

At the national competition, the school racked up award after accolade.

They were declared first in overall mixed choir, second overall women’s choir, second place women’s chorale as well as all superior ratings across the board.

Because of their superior ratings, the school now qualifies for a higher level of competition and will be competing in an elite concert series for the Festival of Gold. This festival allows competitors to enter on an audition basis, which Lafayette has done by doing so well in D.C. They would be competing in the Festival Gold in 2019.

For their recent D.C. trip, the choir program has been fundraising for the trip since last spring.

Students have been encouraging community members to attend their concerts and events. A small admission price is taken which goes toward

funding trips like this one.

A few middle school students and parents accompanied the high school students and in total 56 people traveled to D.C. by charter bus for the competition. The first couple days of the trip were spent exploring Washington. They went sightseeing, visited museums and even had the chance to meet with U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran in his office.

They competed on the last day of the trip.

Hannah Gadd has been the choir director at Lafayette for the past 2 years. This is also her second year as a working teacher. The Amory native attended the University of Mississippi for both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In addition to teaching middle and high school choir, she also teaches a music appreciation class.

“I wouldn’t wanna be anywhere else,” Gadd said when asked if she liked working at Lafayette. “The administrators and all the faculty, staff and students are just quality individuals and a blast to work with. My students are great and their parents great and

are always willing to get involved and help. It’s so great to be able to come to school everyday and do something that you love in an environment that helps to promote the arts.

I get to help kids with what they love too, so it’s very rewarding.”

Gadd went on say that her students worked really hard in preparing for this competition. They’ve been working with this music since August. She said their dedication paid off and “My students were so diligent about learning their music,” Gadd said.

The choir will be holding their spring concert on May 11 and will be their first fundraiser for the upcoming school year. It will be taking place at North Oxford Baptist Church at 7 p.m.

Thursday’s shooter awaiting charges OXFORD CITIZEN

At around 7 p.m. Thursday night, the Oxford Police Department responded to a 911 call in

the parking lot of Oxford Discount Tobacco and Oxford Pawnshop on North Lamar to a report of gunshots.

Joshua Flemmons, 25, of

Oxford and Patrick Spearman, 38, of Abbeville had been shot. The two were transported by air to Regional One Health in Memphis. Both victims are

expected to survive their injuries.

OPD then put out a search for Ricky Mabry, 30, of Oxford and referred to him as a person of interest.

Around 10:15 p.m., Mabry turned himself in to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Department. OPD officers went and retrieved Mabry from Holmes County and

locked him up in the Lafayette County Detention Center. As of Friday afternoon, no former charges have been filed.

The Weeks to return to The Lyric on April 27

Mississippi-grown rock group The Weeks will be returning to The Lyric on April 27 to perform and promote their latest album “Easy.”

The band, now based out of Nashville, passes through their home state for shows as frequently as they can.

This will be their first show in this year.

The Weeks is comprised of identical twins Cyle and Caine Barnes, Sam Williams and Damien Bone. They all grew up together in Jackson and formed their group back in high school, almost 10 years ago. They’ve been on tour around the world and played with big names like Kings of Leon, Passion Pit, The Meat Puppets and more.

“I started thinking about how fortunate we’ve been in receiving grant money this year and the success of our silent auction,” Langley said. “I decided that a better way to approach this art gallery idea would be to sell, or allow parents to ‘purchase,’ students’ artwork for $5 a piece, and then have all proceeds go to Lovepacks.

In addition to the individual pieces created by each and every student, there are larger paintings done collectively by each class. The paintings depict the animal that each class is named after, which is how Willie Price divides their classes. There will be

“It’s new and a little different,” Cyle Barnes said.

“It’s a pretty straight forward rock and roll album, which is what we wanted to get back to doing.”

Cyle and his brother grew up with their Uncle Charlie, who Cyle said was basically their dad, constantly listening to Southern rock and jam bands. Anytime they’d go hunting or on any other kind of trip, they would always blast The Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. He said that though no one in his family actually played any instrua zebra, duck, monkey and bunny. Each child in the class is given a section of the canvas to paint. These larger pieces will be auctioned off with the bidding beginning at $50.

Parents wishing to buy their child’s art are welcome to give more or less than the $5 or none at all, but all proceeds will be directly benefiting Lovepacks.

The nonprofit is a food distribution program that works with the county and city school districts to give out over 150 packs of food to children in the community every Friday. The nutrition supplementation program was set up in 2010 to make sure students and their siblings had something to eat on the weekends. Lovepacks points out that school lunch is the only meal many kids will eat all day.

“Lovepacks has been near and dear to our

hearts for several years now,” Langley said. “Alyce Krouse is one of our duck teachers senior programming assistant. She has been with Lovepacks since the beginning, so we’ve

been involved with that organization through her.

Over the years, she has shared with us stories about how much this program has impacted the children of our community. It just seemed like the natural place to start for fundraising and giving back.”

Tomorrow, Monday, April 3, the 17th annual Oxford International Conference on the Science of Botanicals The conference is put on every year by the National Center for Natural Research Products (NCNPR) at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy.

Researchers and interested parties come to Oxford from all over the world to participate in the conference.

The purpose of the conference is to strengthen this particular niche of the scientific community. Visitors are coming to gather to share research and knowledge about the study of botanicals and their role in improving the state of global health.

Martin, Ingram’s big nights drive Lafayette past New Albany The only Bulldogs that didn't have a big win Friday night was the one at W.V. Brewer Field.

Mississippi State won the series against Ole Miss at Swayze Field, MSU's Morgan William hit the shot heard around the world to stop Connecticut's 111-game winning streak in the Women's Final Four in Dallas, but the New Albany Bulldogs were held in check for the majority of the contest in the Lafayette Commodore's 6-2 victory to stay in the hunt for the top spot with Ripley in Division 2-4A. New Albany (12-4 overall, 5-1 in Division 2-4A) got on the board with a bang with a Sam McMillin leadoff triple. Eli Jackson scored him on the next pitch with a RBI single to right field and take an early 1-0 lead. Three batters later, Tripp Mills scored Jackson from third base to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

"They really came out swinging," Lafayette coach Greg Lewis said about New Albany's start of the contest. "Their first four guys are really good. They can all swing it. We made some plays behind (Hunter) Coleman, at the same time he used two pitches that he had, he'd throw the curveball every once in a while, but it was mostly fastballs and change-ups and did a real good job of spotting it up."

Coleman got the win in relief for Lafayette (8-10-1, 5-1) going the last four innings allowing no runs on three hits, one strikeout, and one walk. After the two-run first inning by the Bulldogs, Lewis was glad that his team fought back instead of laying down after the fast start.

"They could've definitely laid down, because we had a few of them like that we go 'dang, we should've caught that fly ball,'" Lewis said. "Pitchers pitched out of some big jams. I thought Collin (Crawford) did a good job for three innings coming on short rest, and then to get a lot out of Hunter Coleman, a freshmen that comes in there and throws the last four and did a great job."

Crawford started the game for Lafayette and allowed two earned runs on three hits, two strikeouts, one walk, and one hit batter.

Different Swagger OHS Lady Chargers have turned a corner in softball

There is a different look to the Oxford High Lady Chargers. Some call it swagger, others would call it confidence.

Whatever the “it” is, the Lady Chargers are a different softball team this spring because they have more of that specific feel.

The team’s four seniors have led the Lady Chargers’ resurgence in softball in 2017. Catcher Harley Thomas cited hard work, all season long, as the key to the team winning more games, and just being more competitive overall.

“It’s nice to see that hard work paying off,” Thomas said. “We put a lot of effort over the summer. Nobody believed that we were going to change things and now it’s showing throughout the season we’re serious about it.”

Oxford’s official record after Thursday night was 10-6-1. The program has several other wins, whether it be in junior varsity action or in tournament/classic play. Kaytlon Pegues, who has moved around and now found a home at shortstop, said new head coach Tabitha Beard brought in a whole new energy level.

“She wants to teach the game and not just speak about it,” Pegues said. “She wants to actually do it. This feels amazing. It’s been a long time since we’ve been winning. It’s been awesome.”

Kiara McNair, a speedster from Florida, has provided a new-look spark.

She came from a softball program in Port St. Joe that was winning. When she

arrived in Oxford, others tried to talk her out of playing for the Lady Chargers because they hadn’t been winning.

“As a senior, I’m proud of these girls.

I’m new here and I’m not going to lie, I heard bad things about the team. I was nervous,” said McNair, who is called Florida by her teammates. “These girls surprised me. The coaches are devoted to playing the game correctly and these girls are so devoted to learning and playing really well. I’ve grown to love every last one of them. This team has gotten a lot better since I started coming out here from soccer. We’re only going to keep improving. We’re really a good team.”

The trash talk that McNair heard before the season has been forgotten about now that she is playing and has a relationship with her teammates.

“They proved me wrong, so I know we’re going to prove everyone else wrong,” McNair added.

Slugger Dee Dee Mathis talked highly about the number of girls that were doing their part this season.

“We have a number of different positions doing their thing. It’s been pretty good,” said Mathis, who rated her season as pretty good rather than spectacular. “My play has helped every now and then when I don’t over throw.”

Mathis has hit a ball over the fence, but she wanted to accomplish more at the plate as the season continued.

Thomas added that all four seniors combined well to form a puzzle. Mathis has the speed, while Pegues can reach balls on the infield that others can’t get

to. Mathis provides the power in the lineup, while Thomas comes through in a big way behind the plate.

“I think we all click in pieces that we’re needed and we have each other’s back when we’re missing something individually,” she added.

Beard knew what she was getting into when she was hired to lead the program.

She is grateful to have these four seniors leading the way, and making the transition that much more tolerable.

“To have that coming in is huge.

Everyone looks up to Dee Dee. She’s Momma Dee Dee and everyone respects her,” Beard said. “Kaytlon isn’t outspoken but she’s going to go hard.

She’s always been the center fielder, and when I asked her to step up and play shortstop, it was a little rough patch.

She’s handled it beautifully. Harley has handled being the catcher with a new pitcher. Those four, they lead us. They handle the team well. They’re great role models to follow.”

There have been times Beard has had to remind the team how good they are.

She has looked back on every loss this year, and each of them the Lady Chargers have been in.

“There are no more blowouts. I always chuckle at the pre-game meetings when the coaches bring up what run rules are going to be in effect,” Beard said. “We’re not that team anymore. We’re the team in three games that put up 31 runs. We’re the team that works our tail off and we’re getting better. And we’re showing people exactly what we can do.”

Ole Miss Basketball Lands Stevens

Rahim Lockhart knows talent when he sees it.

Lockhart had a decorated Ole Miss basketball career. He led the Rebels to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament as a senior, and after a brief NBA D-League career, he shifted to coaching. A successful stint in the high school ranks led to Lockhart becoming the head coach at Jones County (Miss.) Junior College, one of the top junior college programs in the country.

Lockhart was honored as an SEC basketball legend in 2013.

Suffice to say, Lockhart has a track record of success. He’s coached and played with some of the best players at various levels. Bruce Stevens, his star player at Jones County, stands out. Stevens committed to Ole Miss last week.

“I think (Ole Miss) is getting is a big-time power forward that can really shoot the ball,”

Lockhart said. “He was able to make his mark with his ability to really shoot the ball from 3. He has a lot of range on his 3point shot. He’s just one of those guys that that type of size and shooting ability doesn’t come around often.”

Stevens is ranked as the No. 6 overall junior college player by JUCORecruiting.com. He averaged 16.2 points and 11.2 rebounds while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from 3 last season.

The addition of Stevens could help offset both the offensive and rebounding production lost following the graduation of Sebastian Saiz. Saiz finished his Rebel career as just the seventh player in SEC history with 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 100 blocked shots. He also joined Murphy Holloway as the only players in Ole Miss history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

“They’re losing a lot in Sebas, so I think Bruce is going to come in and definitely help take a lot of that burden that Sebas had rebounding,” Lockhart said. “He’s going to be unique in his way of scor-

ing points up because Sebas was a down-low guy, while Bruce is going to stretch the floor and be able to take advantage of mismatches with his size.

“They’re returning a lot of players. They had a nice season this year in going to the NIT quarterfinals. I think he was able to buy into the fact that with the

returning guys they have and the guys they’re bringing in, they can take it a step further.”

Lockhart said Ole Miss is also getting a quality person off the court in Stevens.

“Bruce is a hometown Mississippi person, foremost,” he said. “Out of high school, Bruce had a

chance to go to any JUCO in the nation. He’s just a special kind of player. He has a strong, tight-knit family structure that I think Ole Miss appeals to.

You’ve got to give a lot of credit to (The Pavilion) Ole Miss has now. He went up for a game this past year, and he was just really impressed with the facility, the atmosphere and the crowd. I think Ole Miss has done a great job building its program with not just success on the court, but you get on campus and look at the facilities. It’s impressive.

“He comes from a beautiful background. His mom and dad are top-ofthe-line, salt-of-the-earth type people. He had a very humble upbringing as a child, and they put a lot of emphasis on Bruce doing the right thing. He’s not out trying to be something he isn’t. He wants to make his mom happy and his dad proud. He’s going to be one of those guys where you can go to sleep at night not worrying about what he’s doing.”

Lee’s hard work pays off with scholarship to Holmes CC

There was a strong desire to keep playing soccer for Madison Lee. The Lafayette senior knew she didn’t want to hang up her cleats, so she went out and earned herself a scholarship. Thanks to a solid showing at an ID camp in Jackson last month, Lee is now a Holmes Community College Bulldog.

Joined by her family, coach Melinda Scruggs, and her teammates, Lee made everything official Friday morning with a ceremony at the LHS library.

The two-hour trip definitely paid off for Lee, who played center midfield this past season for Scruggs.

“There were a lot of coaches over there and I got to meet (Holmes) Coach (Matt) Convertino.

It worked out well, I really liked it,” said Lee, who is hoping to play defense for the Bulldogs next fall. “I really liked how everything was set up on the campus. I

Prior to the ID camp, Lee was e-mailing coaches about a chance to play somewhere. She admitted that they were a little late into the season, and should have started earlier.

“I think being out there and getting to show what I can do was really helpful,” Lee said. “I could e-mail a bunch of coaches and say how great I am but they don’t know unless they watch me.”

Scruggs felt like being seen was a big key for Lee to earn her chance.

“It’s not just high school.

That’s a good tool, but getting out there and playing club or going to ID camps, you have to be seen,” Scruggs said. “They’re not just going to find you in the middle of nowhere. I think that’s a big thing for an athlete. I’m very passionate about this sport and I love to

see the kids grow up from 10th grade to 12th grade and then to see them continue on and use soccer as a tool to continue education.

To be able to do both, that’s the part I loved as a player growing up.”

Holmes was 14-2 in soccer action last season. All of the games are played at the

Ridgeland campus.

“There are a lot of things to do there and lots of places to get jobs,” Lee said. “It’s a safe neighborhood that I’ll be around. I’m excited about it.”

Lee is the second Lady Commodore to sign a scholarship this year. Kirkland Pruitt is headed to play at Southwest.

“I’ll see her on the field and that will be kind of weird playing against her, but it will be a fun little rivalry,” Lee said.

Scruggs added that because Lee grew up this year and became a leader, she was able to keep the program going in the right direction.

“I think that’s the fun part, to see them progressing. It’s every year now. There are one or two or three girls every year now that are going and continuing their soccer career,” Scruggs said.

“To me, that’s a success because they are continuing on to get an education at the same time.”

Rebels’ Luke has options along offensive line

Ole Miss offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator Matt Luke has never been in this position before.

Luke heads a unit that could be considered the strength of the Rebel offense entering 2017-18. The offensive line returns four of five starters from last season, and seven total started multiple games a year ago.

Back are starting tackles Greg Little and Alex Givens, as well as guards Javon Patterson and Jordan Sims.

Sean Rawlings has replaced now-departed center Robert Conyers, though Rawlings appeared in 11 games and 21 over the last two seasons.

Rod Taylor has 32 games under his belt, while Daronte Bouldin is experienced, too. And the unit is only made stronger by five redshirt freshmen. Taylor is currently starting over Givens at right tackle.

“I’ve never had seven guys

this far along before,” Luke said. “Obviously there was a time when I had one or two.

Then you want four. Then when you have four, you want seven. Then when you have seven, you want 10. I’d love to be able to have 10 guys I can roll in and out of there. We’re not quite there yet. But I’ve been very pleased with some of the things the redshirts have been doing. They’ve been getting a lot of reps.”

Luke said, from a physicality standpoint, Royce Newman and Eli Johnson are probably the closest of the redshirt freshmen to contributing in games. Jack DeFoor might not be too far off either, especially if Luke begins giving him reps at center. Newman is up to 300 pounds.

“I’d love to be able to try to get it to eight or nine I’m comfortable with, at least, before the spring’s over,” Luke said. “I’ve been pleased with the redshirt freshmen we’ve been developing. It started with Jordan Sims and

Sean Rawlings. Last year, it was Alex Givens. You’d love to see a couple of guys like that step up, be it a Royce Newman or an Eli Johnson.

Jack DeFoor’s been working at second left guard, doing some good things. They’re doing well. Bryce Mathews has been rolling in there with Michael Howard some at the tackle spot. We’re just trying to give as many reps to those guys as we can and

see how they come along.”

Ole Miss is young at various positions. Quarterback Shea Patterson is a true sophomore, while four of the top six Rebel wide receivers are underclassmen.

In turn, the leadership burden could fall to the offensive line. Taylor and Bouldin are seniors, The junior class is comprised of Sims, Patterson and Rawlings.

“I think that was part of our thing coming into spring,” Luke said. “Usually linemen, for the most part, keep to themselves. Our guys have been doing good at pushing each other and pushing themselves. But to try to spread that influence throughout the whole team or throughout the whole offense, I think that’s a huge thing. You have guys like a Javon Patterson, Jordan and

Sean. They have the team’s ear, they have the team’s respect, and on top of that, they’re super kids. As much as that positive influence they can spread over the team, the better.”

All in all, Luke is excited about the options at his disposal – an embarrassment of riches of sorts. Of course he is.

He’s never been here before.

“I feel like I’ve got seven starters,” he said. “There’s great competition there at guard and at tackle. Alex had his best day (recently). Really, really played well. He did a great job, and obviously Greg is coming along and has gotten so much better. Rod’s just such a good athlete. It’s kind of like you’ve got to find a place to play him. Daronte’s really come on, so I haven’t needed Rod as much at guard because of the strides Daronte has made. I’m working Rod at right and left – he’s the oldest – and letting Greg and Alex settle in.”

Lady Chargers couldn't overcome seven-run deficit in loss to New Hope tempts helping Oxford (106-1, 0-2) collect seven errors on the night.

"They forgot that we've played on this field," Oxford coach Tabitha Beard said.

"We practice on this field all the time, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal and that's one reason I felt comfortable about moving it over.

When it rains, we come to FNC and we practice. I thought it would be a little bit more of an advantage than what it was. We just forgot how fast a ball can skip off the turf."

also played for New Hope her freshman year and thought that some of her emotions affected her pitching. She went 2 2/3 innings and allowed nine runs, but just three earned, on eight hits, including two home runs, and only one strikeout with no walks, leaving in the third inning with Oxford trailing New Hope 9-2.

"What we saw tonight was the worst effort our pitchers have given all year," Tabitha Beard said. "I think being from New Hope and her being from New Hope and I think she tried to do a little bit too much in the circle, I really believe that. She let her emotions

get to her. She left the ball in places she never should. We didn't help her any at times."

Oxford did provide enough offense to win however outhitting the Lady Trojans 15-10. Although Brittni Beard didn't fare well in the circle, she did lead the Lady Charger offense going 4-for-5 with a double, a RBI, and a run scored on the night. Madison Crosby and Dee Dee Mathis were 3-for3 and 3-for-4 respectively on the night and each also drove in a run. Crosby also came in relief on the mound and did a good job in the circle allowing four runs, but three were unearned, on just two hits with

two walks and two strikeouts.

"Madison stepped in and did a great job, she hasn't had to pitch a lot of innings all year," Tabitha Beard said.

"Brit's been pretty much lights out for us. When she got in trouble, Madison stepped up and did a good job. We had some errors that kept us out of it, but if you look at the hits we were up above them. When you do that in a ball game, you have to win. Defensively we kept ourselves out of it."

Oxford had their best chance to come back in the bottom of the sixth inning.

each reached on consecutive singles to cut the lead to 11-8 and put the tying runner at the plate. New Hope was able to get out of it with a fielder's choice groundout and a strikeout without further damage. The Lady Trojans put two more runs up in the seventh inning to put the contest away.

New Hope had two-run homers each from Kelsie Gerhart and Lanoria Abrams. Alex Melton led all Lady Trojan hitters going 3for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored.

Oxford will face West Point Tuesday night in another key Division 2-5A contest. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Ingram finished 3-for-3 and scored all three times he reached base on the night. Martin was 1-for-3 but drove in the first three Commodore runs in the contest. McMillin led New Albany with their lone multi-hit performance

going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Mills also finished 1-for-1 with a double, a walk, and a RBIsacrifice bunt.

Lafayette will travel to Senatobia Tuesday night in another Division 2-4A contest before hosting the Warriors on Friday. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
